Chapter 4

Auteur: Liora Z
"Miss Sienna, I have a meeting. If that's all, get out of my way."

Sienna turned ghost-white.

"Sienna, come here."

Caspian was standing nearby. He shot me a look so cold I could've been his sworn enemy.

Fine by me.

I pulled away and walked off.

Less than an hour later, my phone blew up.

"Miss Aurora, it's a disaster!" The family's consigliere sounded frantic. "The offshore investment your father brokered went south!"

My blood went cold.

It was a billion-dollar project. On paper, it was real estate. In reality, it was the family's biggest money-laundering pipeline.

My father pulled every political string he had as Senator to greenlight it.

"What happened?" I forced myself to stay calm.

"The offshore accounts leaked. The FBI is sniffing around."

I nearly dropped my phone.

Only three people had access to those accounts: Caspian, Sienna, and me.

And I never touched the actual operations.

An emergency family meeting was called in ten minutes.

I rushed to the boardroom. All the capos and underbosses sat at the long table, their faces grim.

Caspian sat at the head, looking like a thunderstorm.

Sienna sat on his right, keeping her head down.

"You all know the situation," Caspian started, his voice chilling. "Someone leaked the intel."

A capo slammed his fist on the table. "How does a rookie mistake like this happen?"

"Now is not the time to point fingers," another capo said. "The Feds are looking at the books. We need to cut our losses now."

All eyes turned to Caspian, waiting for his call.

I looked at Sienna. She was pale as a sheet, her hands shaking violently under the table.

"It was my mistake." I watched Sienna's shaking hands. I suddenly wanted to see just how far Caspian would go for her. So, I spoke up coldly. "I used an unsecured network while checking the offshore books."

Sienna’s head snapped up. She looked shocked, like she’d just been thrown a lifeline.

But before I could say another word, Caspian’s ruthless voice cut me off:

"No. It wasn't Aurora."

I almost breathed a sigh of relief, until he dropped the hammer.

"It was my father-in-law's political funds. His people leaked it. I'm handing the Senator over to the FBI to shut down the investigation."

The room went dead silent.

I couldn't believe my ears. My blood turned to ice.

"Caspian, you know that's a lie," I hissed.

He didn't even glance at me. "Shut up, Aurora. It's family business."

After the meeting, Sienna practically ran out.

The others filtered out until only Caspian and I were left.

"Are you insane?" I stood up, glaring at him. "You know it was Sienna! Only the three of us had clearance! You're sacrificing my father just to protect her?!"

Caspian towered over me, his eyes full of exhaustion and disappointment:

"Is this your idea of a game, Aurora?" Caspian sneered. "Did you think taking the fall would make the capos suspect Sienna? Since when did you get so manipulative?"

He looked at me like I was a psycho. "Sienna took a bullet for this family. All you do is shift the blame and set people up. Burning a senator to save my second-in-command is just good business."

I stared at him blankly. It felt like a knife was carving up my heart piece by piece.

"You're burning my father to save her." It wasn't a question. It was a fact.

"I am protecting the family," he said coldly. "A senator's career is a fair trade for the family's survival."

My fingers absentmindedly touched my chest.

There was no physical wound, but the pain was killing me.

The next day, the news was everywhere.

State Senator Under Investigation for Dirty Money

Rising Political Star Falls: Senator Charged with Money Laundering

The entire elite circle was treating my family like a joke.

My phone rang non-stop. Reporters wanting a scoop, friends wanting gossip.

I ignored them all.

At 3 PM, I changed into casual clothes and packed all my personal stuff into a cardboard box.

I bumped into Caspian at the elevators.

He saw my box and scoffed. "You're throwing a fit over this?"

"The FBI took my father," I said, completely deadpan.

He actually looked relieved. He reached out to ruffle my hair, just like old times.

"Don't worry, baby. Once the heat dies down, I'll put your dad in an even higher seat."

"What's a senator? If I want to, I can make him Governor. Stop throwing a fit and wait for me at home tonight."

He said it so casually. Like my father's entire life was just a pawn on his chessboard.

Like my family's twenty years of hard work could be trashed and replaced on a whim.

"Okay," I said quietly.

Then I walked out of the building that had trapped me for twenty-five years, without ever looking back.

As the elevator doors closed, I saw him standing there, a flash of confusion in his eyes.

He thought I was just throwing another tantrum. That I'd be back in a few days.

He didn't know I was never coming back.

We walked out of that club, away from the smell of booze and decay. The cold New York night wind hit my face. Julian took off his custom jacket and gently draped it over my shoulders. It smelled like his crisp cedar cologne."Is it really over?" He looked down at me, his eyes shining with pure adoration."It's over." I leaned right into his warm, broad chest. My eyes stung a little bit.But suddenly, all the heavy, suffocating gloom of the New York night just vanished.I couldn't help it. I buried my face in his warm chest and laughed out loud.Life with Julian was always this bright. He never doubted me. He never controlled me. He never turned his own insecurities into my chains.Holding hands on the way back to the hotel, we walked past an art gallery that was closing up.My eyes lit up. I pointed at an oil painting of the California sun. "That's it! I want to hang that in the New York lobby."Julian laughed and took me inside to buy it. "Why this one?""Because it reminds me of

"Aurora!"Less than two hours after we got back from the auction, Sienna showed up in the hotel lobby.I turned away from the decor samples and stared at her.The sharp, proud Sienna from a year ago was completely gone. She was skin and bones. Her cheeks were hollow. Three brutal knife scars ran all the way from her temple down to her jaw.Julian frowned. Out of pure protective instinct, he stepped in front of me."It's okay." I patted his arm. "She's someone I used to know."Sienna's eyes were red. She cut me off frantically. "Listen to me. I'm so sorry. After you left, the money dried up. We got slaughtered in the gang wars. I couldn't run the businesses, and the elders made me pay the price for it."She pointed at the scars on her face. "Aurora, I finally realize I was never a good right-hand woman! Without your money and brains, I'm absolutely nothing!"Julian's eyes went cold. He clearly didn't want this gang trash dirtying my space.I waved my hand, silently telling him to let

One year later. JFK Airport Arrivals. The second I stepped off the plane, I saw my parents standing at the front of the crowd. They were waving a massive banner:WELCOME HOME, YOUR MAJESTY!Julian laughed so hard he leaned right against my shoulder.I faked a glare and elbowed him in the ribs."My parents are watching," I warned him. "Aren't you a Silicon Valley tech billionaire? Didn't you say you wanted to be on your best behavior to win the boyfriend title?""Yes, my queen," Julian said, standing up straight. He gently wiped a tear of laughter from my eye.He was tall and sharp. Behind his gold-rimmed glasses, his deep eyes were full of nothing but love and total indulgence.I took his hand and walked over to introduce him to my parents. After resting at our New York hotel, Julian and I changed into formal wear. We were heading to a major land auction in Manhattan. My year in Napa changed everything. With Julian's help, I studied hospitality management. I took the clean money I pul

Caspian's POV"You lied to me?!"Sienna stormed into the Don's study, her voice shrill. Her eyes were bloodshot and her hair was a mess. The cold, calculated hitwoman was gone. She was purely humiliated and furious from our fight.Caspian looked up and frowned. "What?""You said her anger at the meeting was just a show! Who told you she was willing to sacrifice her father?" Sienna's hands shook so badly she dropped her pen. "She didn't volunteer! Did you force her?!"Caspian snapped back impatiently, but a second later, he saw the total despair on Sienna's face.A terrifying thought hit him.Sienna's eyes went wide. "You forced her? Caspian, why would you do that? That's her father!"Caspian yanked at his tie and let out a heavy, exhausted sigh."I know how you are. You messed up a major job. I knew the family would strip you of everything." His voice was tired. "Aurora is different. Her family's power is my biggest safety net. The elders wouldn't dare touch her. I just used her dad t

It had been a long time.Mom was in the living room watching the news. The second she saw me, she jumped up and hugged me tight."Baby, you're home," she choked out. "Your dad...""Mom, it's okay." I rubbed her back. "Everything is going to be fine.""Aurora?" Dad's voice came from upstairs.I hurried up and pushed open the study door.I expected a total mess. I expected my father, a state senator hunted by rivals and feds, to be a broken man.Instead, he was leaning back in his leather chair, calmly sipping his whiskey. When he saw the tiny suitcase holding twenty-five years of my memories, he actually smiled."That's all you brought?" He raised an eyebrow and slid a folder across the desk.I froze. I stared at the top-secret file stamped with an FBI watermark."Come here, sweetie," he said, gesturing for me to sit. "Don't worry.
