Chapter 2

Author: Three Two
Our daughter’s breathing grew faster and more ragged by the second. Suddenly, he let go of my neck, bolted into the bedroom, scooped her up, and rushed out the door.

When the emergency room doors slammed shut, he slid down against the wall, covering his face in his hands. The blood from his knees had soaked right through his pants.

“I’m sorry… I have no idea what’s wrong with me…”

I raised my hand, wanting to hit him.

Instead, I froze as I realized that even though he was only twenty-nine, strands of white hair were already peeking through his dark locks. Aside from those strikingly handsome features, he looked nothing like the man he used to be.

The first time I met him, he had walked into the flower shop where I worked part-time to get a bouquet for his mother. Back then, he wore a tailored suit with diamond-encrusted cufflinks. He was nothing like the man standing before me today, whose T-shirt collar had faded to a pale, washed-out white.

My hand dropped back down to my side.

“Julian, if I take our daughter and leave, would things be easier for you?”

He suddenly shoved me away, trying very hard to suppress the frustration in his eyes.

“Stop using these fake, manipulative tests on me!”

He pushed me so hard that the back of my head slammed against the wall, and my skin split open. He did his absolute best to mask the disgust in his eyes.

“If I wanted to leave, I would have left long ago. I’m not going to abandon the both of you.”

Amidst the agonizing throb at the back of my head, my mind drifted back seven years ago. Back then, he had pushed open the door to the flower shop, caught sight of me, and stood there staring like a complete fool.

“I want to buy every single flower in this shop and give them all to you. May I learn your name?”

After that day, he spent two whole years pursuing me. He remembered every detail about me and ultimately confessed his love to me under a sky of fireworks.

He was a brilliant young man who gave me his heart, and I fell for him. However, fate was cruel.

The year he graduated, young and proud, he was drugged while taking over his family’s business. I rushed over after getting his call, only to find him barely conscious and burning with fever. A few people tried to stop me, and during the struggle, someone forced a drink down my throat.

From that night, the only thing I could remember was him holding me close, repeating over and over, “Claire, don’t be afraid.”

A month later, I found out I was pregnant.

When Julian brought me back home to meet his family, his mother wouldn’t even let me set foot through the door.

“A penniless orphan like you thinks a baby is your golden ticket into our family?”

To force him back into line, his family cut off his inheritance and used their influence to make him unemployable. However, he refused to back down. After apologizing to his parents, he took my hand and walked away.

“Claire, wherever you are is where I belong.”

Yet, reality was a bottomless pit that could never be filled, taking all the love away.

Once the emergency surgery was over, the doors swung open.

I was too afraid to go in because I didn’t want my daughter to see my head injury, so Julian went in first.

Our daughter’s voice sounded tiny. “Daddy, I’m sorry… Why are your eyes so red? Did I do something wrong again?”

Julian couldn’t look her in the eye. “No, it’s not your fault, Annie.”

The doctor flipped through her chart. “She needs to be hospitalized for further treatment. You’ll need to pay an upfront deposit of fifty thousand dollars.”

I walked into the room right after patching up my wound, just in time to hear the amount. I only had twenty thousand dollars left from the clinical trial money. It wasn’t enough—not even close.

As Julian turned to leave, he bumped right into me.

Looking into his hollow eyes, I said, “About the money…”

I wanted to tell him that I would figure out a way to get the money, and that if he was tired, he could just rest.

However, as he brushed past me, he shoved me hard into the doorframe. My wound opened up again, and blood began trickling down my neck.

“Claire, I’ve tried my best. I really have… I’m out of options, and I can’t handle this anymore.”

I leaned against the wall, my vision slowly fading to black.

I stayed like that until my daughter called out to me nervously. “Mommy? What’s wrong?”

Forcing a smile onto my face, I walked over and gently stroked her hair. “Annie, once you get discharged, would you like to move somewhere else with me?”

“What about Daddy?”

My smile instantly stiffened.

“Daddy isn’t coming with us.”

I touched his hair gently, suddenly realizing that he was already thirty-one years old.“It’s okay. Everything will get better.”I had said those exact words before. The truth was, Julian wasn’t all that brave back then, either. There was this one time, a very long time ago, when he had worked himself to exhaustion just to make money, and he lay in bed with a high fever, talking in his delirium.I had wrung out a towel to lay over his forehead when he suddenly grabbed my wrist. His eyes were red, and his voice sounded raspy.“Claire, I have nothing left. I have no family. My parents don’t want me anymore.”I cried along with him, unable to do anything except press my face against his scorching palm, saying, “It’s okay, Julian. Everything will get better.”He was delirious from the fever, and tears silently trickled from the corners of his eyes into his hair. The next day, when he woke up, I wiped them away for him, over and over again. However, it was as if nothing ever happened

He came to pick up Annie from school and stood by the gate. With his hands shoved into his coat pockets, he stared blankly in a particular direction without moving an inch.I called his name twice before he finally turned his head, his reactions painfully slow, as if muffled through a dense wall.A medicine bottle slipped out of his pocket and rolled onto the ground. Once I read the label, I couldn’t help but raise my voice.“Are you sick?”He opened his eyes, his face looking terribly pale, as if something deep inside him was collapsing bit by bit.“I went to see a doctor,” he said. “They told me I have depression.”His tone was flat, as if he were just commenting about the weather today. “The pills help a little. If I don’t, I can’t sleep the entire night.”“How long has it been?”“I forgot. Maybe two years.”Two years. My fingers curled up slightly. Wasn’t that right when we separated two years ago?“Then why did you come to Sothersby Town? Did the doctor say you could tr

A shiny black sedan was parked on the open patch of ground in front of my house. It stuck out like a sore thumb against the run-down apartment buildings, clotheslines, and cluttered corners filled with junk.Annie’s hand tightened around mine. She saw it, too. A man was standing next to the car, wearing a dark gray overcoat and holding nothing in his hands.Annie froze in place. Her mouth parted slightly, but no sound came out.He spoke first. “Annie.”His voice wasn’t loud, almost as if he was afraid of scaring her.Annie let go of my hand and took two steps forward, only to stop and look back at me. Once I nodded at her, she ran over, stopping right in front of him. Looking up, she called out, “Daddy.”The word came out awkwardly, as if she had been wanting to say it for a long time.He bent down and raised a hand to touch her face, but paused halfway. In the end, he rested his hand gently on top of her head.“You’ve grown taller.”Even though it had been two years since t

The southern coastal town was called Sothersby Town. The temperature and humidity there were just right. The moment we got off the bus, Annie expressed how much she loved the town.I managed to land a job at the local medical clinic helping the elderly doctor. The pay was not high, but the best part was that I could bring Annie with me.Right next to the clinic was our rented house. With the window open, I could see a river, in which the water was an unreal shade of green.Annie never mentioned her father or brought up Julian to me. Perhaps because she had been sick since she was little, she was always far more mature than other children her age. Every day, she quietly waited for me at home. Every morning, she would follow me to the open space in front of the clinic for a slow walk.At first, she would start gasping for air after walking for just ten minutes. Her little face would turn purple, and she would crouch on the ground and wouldn’t be able to get back up.I would crouc

He subconsciously described someone with cute, slightly pointed canines, deep dimples when she smiled, and the subtle scent of flowers instead of perfume. The moment the words left his mouth, his mother slapped him hard across the face.“You useless fool! Why are you still thinking about that woman?”He was taken aback. Had he really been talking about me the whole time?Suddenly, his mind drifted back to the day we first met. I had been standing by the entrance, bathed in warm sunshine as I welcomed him. To him, I was so breathtakingly beautiful that it felt unreal. In that split second, he was reminded of a graceful white swan he had once seen in a picture book—something so beautiful that anyone would long to possess it, cherish it, and fall head over heels in love with it. However, just as quickly, he shook his head. No, that couldn’t be it; he had simply described me out of habit. That was until one late night, when he was heading home after a business dinner, completely

  • Done with You   Chapter 6

Julian didn’t call out again, nor did he even think about making a phone call. He simply finished that cold plate of pasta in silence. He didn’t reheat it. He just sat in the dim living room, swallowing it bite after bite. The tomato sauce was far too sour, and there was far too much salt. That was Annie’s cooking, alright. On the few days she was healthy, the little girl was always begging to cook his favorite dish for him.In truth, he didn’t actually like the dish, but it was one of the decent options among cheap meals. So, over the past few years, Julian had come to love it too. Annie could never remember how much salt to put in, but he ate every last bit, leaving the plate spotless. After that, he stayed in the apartment for a long time. He didn’t look for us, he didn’t call, and he didn’t even shed a tear. He simply leaned back on the couch, staring at the light fixture on the ceiling that hadn’t been cleaned in forever. The apartment was so quiet that he could hear the wa
