Chapter 3

Author: Three Two
Annie fell silent.

After a little while, she asked in her tiny voice, “Is it because of me?”

My heart felt as if someone had grabbed it and squeezed it.

“It’s not because of you. It’s just that Daddy is tired, so he wants to take a break, okay?”

She nodded, still confused, and placed her small hand on my face. “Mommy, you have dark circles under your eyes. I want you to rest, too.”

I held Annie close. “I’m not tired.”

The next day, Annie’s condition took a sharp turn for the worse. She started coughing up blood, her tiny face turning purple as she gasped for air.

The doctors rushed in to resuscitate her while I was pushed out into the hallway, where a nurse handed me a notice for the overdue fees.

I scrolled through all my contacts. I had already borrowed from everyone I could, and I had begged everyone I could beg.

When I made my last-ditch call, the person on the other end stayed silent for a long time before saying, “Claire, you haven’t even paid me back the three thousand dollars you borrowed last month.”

Left with no other choice, I reached back out to the hospital about the clinical trials.

They turned me down bluntly. “No way. Your liver and kidney function tests are already in the red. You can’t participate anymore.”

Seeing Annie lying there with tubes hooked up to her, I decided I would just have to find another hospital.

As soon as I ran downstairs, I bumped right into Julian.

He shoved a receipt into my hand and said, “I’ve paid Annie’s hospital bill. Don’t use the excuse of abandoning our child to shut me down anymore.”

A dark bruise covered his cheekbone, and his knuckles were swollen.

I clutched the paper tight, and a realization suddenly hit me. “Where did you get so much money?”

During our first year after leaving the Young family, my prenatal checkups cost money, and pregnancy complications required expensive care. So, he went behind my back to join illegal underground fights. When he came home, he had two broken ribs, but he was holding eighteen hundred dollars in cash and a bag of imported health supplements, smiling as if nothing had happened.

“Didn’t you promise me that you’d never go back there again?” I yelled. “I can figure out the money! I don't need you putting your life on the line for us!”

He closed his eyes, then suddenly let out a calm, bitter smile. “You can? Fine, then you do it.”

He tugged me along and led me into a dingy, gray building. It was thick with smoke, with several shirtless men playing cards.

“Hey, Julian, you’re really going all out, huh? You just fought two matches, and you’re back for more?”

He pushed me forward. “Not me. Her.”

One of the men sized me up, frowning. “A woman fighting? What kind of joke is that? But… we are short on ‘volunteers’ for platelet donations. It pays a twenty-thousand-dollar allowance per session.

“Looking at her pale face, though… Can she even handle having her blood drawn? If something goes wrong, it could cost her life.”

Julian glanced at me, his gaze fleeting. “She can.”

Then, he turned around and walked out.

The man asked if I had really made up my mind. I looked at the closed door and nodded. Twenty thousand dollars was enough to cover Annie’s medical bills for six months.

I lay down on an old medical chair. First, they needed to draw blood for a preliminary test.

When the thick, outdated needle pierced my arm, the pain made me cry out loud. My exhausted body was screaming in protest.

Just as they were preparing to insert the main needle, the door was kicked open.

Julian’s chest heaved as he panted. “Forget it. We don’t need the allowance. Book me for another match tomorrow instead.”

I sat up abruptly, causing the needle to slip out of my vein, and blood splattered across the bedsheets.

“Get out! I told you I don’t need your help!”

Due to my severe anemia, I couldn’t stand steady. So, he crouched down, pulled me onto his back, and began walking us home.

“Claire, I said… forget it.”

My consciousness faded in and out, blurring the line between the past and the present.

During our second year after he left the Young family, I used to wait for him at the restaurant where he worked until closing time. To save on bus fare, he would carry me home on his back.

Lying on his back in a daze, I used to ask him softly, “Julian, did you secretly work four jobs again today? Are you really tired? Do you regret any of this?”

He held me securely on his back and replied, “As long as I’m with you, nothing else matters.”

Now, along with the wind, the very same voice drifted into my ears.

“I regret it, Claire.”

My tears splashed onto his back.

“I regret it, too.”

Perhaps I shouldn’t have given birth to Annie in the first place and made everyone suffer along with me. However, I had no choice back then. The doctor warned that given my health complications, an abortion carried extreme risks to my own life.

My vision went dark, and I passed out. When I woke up, I was lying at home. I sat up abruptly as Annie came to my mind.

Just then, Julian called.

“I’m at the hospital,” he said. “The doctor said Annie needs to be hospitalized for ten days. Bring a change of clothes over.”

Ten days.

I repeated the number silently in my head. In ten days, I would be leaving for good.

Just as I was about to hang up, I heard Annie’s voice on the line.

“Daddy, once I get discharged from the hospital, I’ll be good and go away with Mommy… That way, you can finally get a good rest.”

I touched his hair gently, suddenly realizing that he was already thirty-one years old.“It’s okay. Everything will get better.”I had said those exact words before. The truth was, Julian wasn’t all that brave back then, either. There was this one time, a very long time ago, when he had worked himself to exhaustion just to make money, and he lay in bed with a high fever, talking in his delirium.I had wrung out a towel to lay over his forehead when he suddenly grabbed my wrist. His eyes were red, and his voice sounded raspy.“Claire, I have nothing left. I have no family. My parents don’t want me anymore.”I cried along with him, unable to do anything except press my face against his scorching palm, saying, “It’s okay, Julian. Everything will get better.”He was delirious from the fever, and tears silently trickled from the corners of his eyes into his hair. The next day, when he woke up, I wiped them away for him, over and over again. However, it was as if nothing ever happened

He came to pick up Annie from school and stood by the gate. With his hands shoved into his coat pockets, he stared blankly in a particular direction without moving an inch.I called his name twice before he finally turned his head, his reactions painfully slow, as if muffled through a dense wall.A medicine bottle slipped out of his pocket and rolled onto the ground. Once I read the label, I couldn’t help but raise my voice.“Are you sick?”He opened his eyes, his face looking terribly pale, as if something deep inside him was collapsing bit by bit.“I went to see a doctor,” he said. “They told me I have depression.”His tone was flat, as if he were just commenting about the weather today. “The pills help a little. If I don’t, I can’t sleep the entire night.”“How long has it been?”“I forgot. Maybe two years.”Two years. My fingers curled up slightly. Wasn’t that right when we separated two years ago?“Then why did you come to Sothersby Town? Did the doctor say you could tr

A shiny black sedan was parked on the open patch of ground in front of my house. It stuck out like a sore thumb against the run-down apartment buildings, clotheslines, and cluttered corners filled with junk.Annie’s hand tightened around mine. She saw it, too. A man was standing next to the car, wearing a dark gray overcoat and holding nothing in his hands.Annie froze in place. Her mouth parted slightly, but no sound came out.He spoke first. “Annie.”His voice wasn’t loud, almost as if he was afraid of scaring her.Annie let go of my hand and took two steps forward, only to stop and look back at me. Once I nodded at her, she ran over, stopping right in front of him. Looking up, she called out, “Daddy.”The word came out awkwardly, as if she had been wanting to say it for a long time.He bent down and raised a hand to touch her face, but paused halfway. In the end, he rested his hand gently on top of her head.“You’ve grown taller.”Even though it had been two years since t

The southern coastal town was called Sothersby Town. The temperature and humidity there were just right. The moment we got off the bus, Annie expressed how much she loved the town.I managed to land a job at the local medical clinic helping the elderly doctor. The pay was not high, but the best part was that I could bring Annie with me.Right next to the clinic was our rented house. With the window open, I could see a river, in which the water was an unreal shade of green.Annie never mentioned her father or brought up Julian to me. Perhaps because she had been sick since she was little, she was always far more mature than other children her age. Every day, she quietly waited for me at home. Every morning, she would follow me to the open space in front of the clinic for a slow walk.At first, she would start gasping for air after walking for just ten minutes. Her little face would turn purple, and she would crouch on the ground and wouldn’t be able to get back up.I would crouc

He subconsciously described someone with cute, slightly pointed canines, deep dimples when she smiled, and the subtle scent of flowers instead of perfume. The moment the words left his mouth, his mother slapped him hard across the face.“You useless fool! Why are you still thinking about that woman?”He was taken aback. Had he really been talking about me the whole time?Suddenly, his mind drifted back to the day we first met. I had been standing by the entrance, bathed in warm sunshine as I welcomed him. To him, I was so breathtakingly beautiful that it felt unreal. In that split second, he was reminded of a graceful white swan he had once seen in a picture book—something so beautiful that anyone would long to possess it, cherish it, and fall head over heels in love with it. However, just as quickly, he shook his head. No, that couldn’t be it; he had simply described me out of habit. That was until one late night, when he was heading home after a business dinner, completely

  • Done with You   Chapter 6

Julian didn’t call out again, nor did he even think about making a phone call. He simply finished that cold plate of pasta in silence. He didn’t reheat it. He just sat in the dim living room, swallowing it bite after bite. The tomato sauce was far too sour, and there was far too much salt. That was Annie’s cooking, alright. On the few days she was healthy, the little girl was always begging to cook his favorite dish for him.In truth, he didn’t actually like the dish, but it was one of the decent options among cheap meals. So, over the past few years, Julian had come to love it too. Annie could never remember how much salt to put in, but he ate every last bit, leaving the plate spotless. After that, he stayed in the apartment for a long time. He didn’t look for us, he didn’t call, and he didn’t even shed a tear. He simply leaned back on the couch, staring at the light fixture on the ceiling that hadn’t been cleaned in forever. The apartment was so quiet that he could hear the wa
