Karma's POV

I changed my phone number on a Thursday morning.

Not because I wanted to.

Because I had finally admitted to myself that I was afraid.

The anonymous messages had started as an annoyance, then they became unsettling, and now they had become something much worse. Every notification made my heart race. Every unknown number made me hesitate before answering. Every message left me wondering whether someone was watching me.

Changing my number felt like surrender, it also felt necessary.

  • Dr. KILLER    Chapter 34

Karma's POVBy the time I pulled into Noah's driveway, the sun had already begun its slow descent behind the city skyline.I sat inside my car for another minute with both hands resting on the steering wheel., head bowed with thoughts flying through my mind. I wasn't sure what had brought me here.Maybe it was everything that had happened over the past few weeks, maybe it was discovering the death of someone I didn't think could just die like that, or maybe it was standing in front of Enzo’s grave and realizing that life had a cruel habit of ending before people got the chance to say the things they really meant.Or maybe… Maybe I simply missed him. The realization made me smile to myself.A few months ago, I wouldn't have believed I could miss another human being this much, now I found myself driving across the city just to hear Noah Adler tell me to come inside.I climbed out of the car and walked toward his front door, before I could knock twice, the door swung open. "Karma?"His s

  • Dr. KILLER    Chapter 33

Noah's POVThe first few days after Karma left my apartment were torture.Karma Kuntz had spent most of her life protecting herself. Running after letting someone get close was almost expected. What frustrated me was what came after. She disappeared, every text I sent received a reply hours later.Every phone call was answered with, "I'm in surgery." Or, "I'm at work.” Or simply, "Talk later."I knew she wasn't lying. She was just... hiding, from me, herself and most especially from us. She always created time for me amongst her busy schedule.I could have pushed harder, demanded answers, even asked whether she regretted what happened between us.Instead, I waited, because loving Karma meant understanding that every time she took a step toward me, it cost her something.Still...Waiting wasn't easy....Work usually distracted me, usually not all the time. Today it didn't.The homicide division was louder than normal, phones rang constantly, detectives walked in and out carrying files

  • Dr. KILLER    Chapter 32

Helena's POVJustice has a peculiar way of disappointing the people who believe in it the most. I learned that long before Marcus Kuntz died, long before what happened to Theon. Long before Karma Kuntz walked into my life and forced me to look at myself without the comfort of excuses. For years I had worn the robes of a judge, believing that the law, however slow, would eventually reach everyone. It doesn't, sometimes it doesn't even try, some monsters never hide. They simply sit behind polished desks....The first file landed on my desk almost three years ago. It wasn't marked urgent, it wasn't classified, but rather it was simply ignored.A seventeen year old girl had disappeared after naming the son of a senior government official as her attacker. The investigation stalled within forty-eight hours. Witnesses suddenly changed their statements. Evidence went missing. The officer handling the case was transferred and the file was quietly archived. I reopened it, to see what I was mis

Every notification made my heart race. Every unknown number made me hesitate before answering. Every message left me wondering whether someone was watching me.Changing my number felt like surrender, it also felt necessary.Only a handful of people got the new one. I stared at my new contact list for a long time, wondering if I had actually solved anything or simply delayed the inevitable.Whoever had found me once could probably find me again....My life had become unbearably complicated, Noah wanted a future with me, not someday, but now. He spoke about commitment with such certainty that it frightened me.Helena wanted me to join her in hunting predators… men who had escaped justice because of money, influence, o

  • Dr. KILLER    Chapter 30

Karma's POVThree days.Three entire days, and I had become remarkably skilled at avoiding Noah Adler. If he called, I answered hours later with an excuse about surgeries. If he texted, I replied with one-word responses that looked polite enough to avoid suspicion but distant enough to keep him from asking questions. If there was even the slightest chance our schedules would overlap, I suddenly discovered a dozen reasons to be somewhere else.It was childish, I knew it, but it was easier than facing him. Because seeing him meant remembering.Remembering the way he had looked at me that night. The way he had held me afterward as though I was something precious instead of something broken. The way I had left before sunrise because staying felt infinitely more terrifying than walking away. I had spent my entire life convincing myself that I did not need anyone. Then Noah Adler had somehow slipped past every defense I had ever built, and now I was terrified. Not of him, but of myself.Bec

  • Dr. KILLER    Chapter 29

Noah's POVThere are moments in life that divide everything into before and after, that evening was one of them. Karma was sitting on my couch with her legs tucked beneath her, wearing one of her simple dresses. Her hair was loose, falling over her shoulders in soft waves, and she was reading one of the novels she had stolen from my bookshelf three weeks ago.She hadn't turned a page in almost ten minutes. She was pretending to read, I was pretending to watch television, neither of us was paying attention to anything except each other, it's a norm with us, we've always been immersed in each other's presence."You've been staring at me," she said without looking up."So have you.""I have a book." She said, "I have a television." I countered. She finally looked at me, the corners of her lips lifting into that smile she reserved for moments when she forgot she was supposed to be guarded. "I wasn't staring.""You smiled at the same page for five minutes."She glanced down at the book."I

Chapter 5The police car smelled like stale coffee and leather.Karma sat in the back seat, hands folded in her lap, watching the city pass through the tinted window. Rosa's cleaning supplies fell to the floor and scattered. The spray bottle rolled across the carpet, leaving a trail of blue liquid running through the blood. The sound tore from her chest, echoing everywhere, filling the hallway as the once rowdy, loud and dirty hotel became empty that morning. • Dr. KILLER    Chapter 3

Karma sat back in her booth, lifted her untouched drink, and watched her father drain his fourth glass of whiskey.Mia walked fast. She changed into something tighter—a red dress that barely covered anything. Reapplied her lipstick. Sprayed more perfume. Then catwalked straight to Marcus's table, l

  • Dr. KILLER    Chapter 1

Marcus stumbled backward, his shoulders hitting the mattress. The woman's hands pressed against his chest, pinning him there. Her perfume—something sweet and seductive, filled his nostrils. His fingers moved toward her hips. She stopped them, pressing one manicured finger on his lips with the corne
