CHAPTER 1
JENNA’S POV “Seriously?” I stormed into the study, holding up a newspaper. “If there's anything I won't take, grandpa is you always devising a means to get me married.” I threw the papers across the desk grandpa was sitted on. “I see this is your new way of saying thank you?” He said. “You are lucky you got to hear about it this time and not run away like a little girl.” His adjusted his glasses as he fixed his gaze at me. Anger? Annoyance? I couldn't read his expression from how he looked. I looked at grandpa confused trying make sense of what I just heard. Did he say thank you? Was it for always making marriage plans behind my back? Or when he arranged a “board meeting” which by coincidence just happened to be my wedding. I rolled my eyes. “Of course I'm supposed to be appreciative of all the times you tried to ruin my life.” “If getting married was a means to ruin peoples lives, the whole world would have been a mess by now,” he snapped. I looked down at my shoes, and gritted my teeth. ”At least I don't get to end up like mum and dad....” The room fell silent as though I just uttered a forbidden word. Grandpa's expression fell flat, his gaze turned to me. “You don't know anything about your mum and dad's relationship worked,” his voice with a hint of anger. “You're only trying to hide the truth from me as usual; dad has always being a freak. Mom died! And whose fault was that? My own fucking father. My heart raced against my chest. I'd never felt this surge of hatred stream through me just at the thought of my father. Grandpa walked up to me, holding my hands in his. “Jenna, my child. Everything your mom did was solely on her terms.” He continued, “Kristen was my favorite, and just like you I made sure to give her all she ever asked for. Your dad was just a manipulative devil who drove her to her death.” “No....if you claim you love her then why didn't you stop them from getting married?” I drew my hand back. “Answer me.” “Honey?” Grandpa called softly. I looked up at him. He gave a sad smile and squeezed my shoulder. “Something's happen which we can't quite control. Your father was a low life, and I curse the day I let your mother get married to him.” “Which is why I decided to get you married myself....to prevent what happened to your mother.” “And the company? Getting married would mean me not paying full attention to the company?” “It's about time you forget about the business and start to think about raising a family, Jenna.” He cried. “I'm to blame for your lack of interest in getting married; I gave you everything you have and now you couldn't care less if a man was in the picture or not.” I glanced around the room refusing to make eye contact. All I could do was stand there like a child getting scolded. He continued, “I gave you everything you asked for, I groomed you into this self independent businesswoman, I could go on and on, but all I ask of you is this little favor,” “What.... I'm only trying to say I'm not ready yet.” I trailed off. “Getting married is such a big deal and I'm not cut out for it. “I get it now.” He nodded. “I've drawn myself to the conclusion you find attraction not in men, but women,” judging eyes stared fiercely at mine. I felt My face reddened in shame. I clenched onto my dress, feeling repulsed at what grandpa had just said. What could this old man possibly be thinking? How could he even think of such a thing? Of course I'm not attracted to women and who knows, I can just imagine what the press would say about it when grandpa goes yapping about it. Business savvy, Jenna after years of marriage pursuit reveals to be attracted to women!! I quivered at the thought of it. “I'm not a lesbian! I have a fiancé for Christ sake,” I shot back angrily. His eyes widened as he jumped up his chair in excitement. “Are... you serious?” His his eyes sparkled with hope as he waited for my response. “Yes, I am serious.” I blurted. “Why am I just hearing about this now? Why did you keep it a secret from–” “Because I was scared you won't accept him.” I interrupted. Dragging my hand from his as I turned away. “I'm afraid he fits into what you think of dad.” I took in his hands again, holding it up against my chest. “And i didn't want you to disapprove of it so I decided we will go low key and figure out what works best for both of us. His once gleaming face now turned into a frown. “ And what does he do?” “Well, he manages a company. And I know you've always wanted someone who's wealthy and affluent, but I really love him, please!” I cried. “I made a vow I'd never let whatever happened to your mom happen to you,” he replied grudgingly. “He's not like that grandpa, I promise you.” He pulled me in for a hug. “Okay my child. If you feel this man makes you happy, then I'm happy.” “You're the best!” I hurriedly placed a peck on his cheek, “ I love you so much.” I turned to walk out of the study. “Just one thing. I'd like to meet with this man,” he announced. “Be sure to bring him for dinner tomorrow.” He waved his hands in dismissal. I walked out of the study, wedging myself against the door as it shut closed behind me. What If he knows? I thought to myself as I began racing to my room. I picked up my phone and dialed Cassy’s number into it. “Pick up the phone!” I murmured as the phone continued to ring. “Hey girl, how you been?” “There’s no time for all that now cass, I’m in deep shit”. I said, as I paced back and forth the room. “What’s wrong hon-“ I cut her mid sentence before she could even finish up whatever she was saying. “How do I get a boyfriend before tomorrow night?”CHAPTER 125ROB’S POV“You’re late” I said, as cold air escaped from my mouth. As ominous as this place looked, it sure packed a lot of chill than outside. The only reason Isabelle would have picked this place was because of how closed off it was from any and everybody. Isabelle’s face appears from behind the shadows. She looked different from last week, perhaps she’d wanted me to believe her lies through her looks also. “Never has it been a problem to arrive fashionably late.” She replies with a grin. Her outfit for today looked too fashionable for just a few talk. A leopard’s skin fur coat covered at most 90 percent of her silhouette, except for the thigh high boots that refused to be outshone. I tear my gaze away from analyzing her choice of clothing even further. “Can we begin?” “Yes! Yes! Of course.”I adjust myself on a crate, shoving my hands deep into the pocket of my leather jacket. The faint feel of my fingers against the transmitter clipped to my belt reminded me of mu
CHAPTER 124ROB’S POVI’ve driven into a lot of storms but none like this. I was unsure of how exactly to feel. But I knew for sure it was now or never. I peered into phone. Exactly one hour until it was time. Sixty minutes before my fate is decided. Could this be the end of start of a world for me? A surge of adrenaline flows through me, hitting every vein with a hard punch. If only she knows what’s coming. I looked back up at the fog covered road ahead of me. The drive to Jenna’s was a plan I hadn’t given a second thought. I didn’t call ahead. Part of me was terrified that if I did, she’d immediately decline seeing me or worse, let the phone ring till I got tired. I wouldn’t be able to bear the rejection at a time like this. My hand hovered over her apartment door for about three seconds longer before I hit the door bell. Another extra minute came, but it felt like an hour before I heard sound of keys and locks opening up. The door swung open, a surprised and then disappointe
CHAPTER 123ISABELLE’S POVThe faint red glow of the alarm clock continued to buzz by the side of my vision. It didn’t bother me that I hadn’t slept yet. 3:45am and my mind was still as sharp as you would after downing an entire jar of coffee. That had been my fate for the past week. Sleep had now become luxury. No matter how many times I managed to close my eyes, she was always there. The smell of her stuffy room choked me like it was present. Her wretched face haunted me everywhere I looked. Perhaps this was a bad idea. Letting Damien resurface something I’d buried a long time ago. Because to him ‘Elena was still a fresh kill and getting enough evidence to frame Rob wouldn’t be a problem.’Walking into the bathroom, I didn’t bother turning on the overhead lights. I looked pathetic and I didn’t want to remember how ghostly I looked. My skin had gone pale and my eyes sunk into my sockets even worse than the previous week. I avoided the sight of the mirror as I scattered through
CHAPTER 122ROB’S POVThe woman at the front desk looked at us as though we were an inconvenience. The sharp sigh from her lips was enough to tell as she dropped down the piece she was knitting. Her lips pressed thin as she swung towards our direction for the second time. “I already told you, we don’t disclose information about any of our residents here. Both old and new, now if you would stop interrupting me.” I didn’t know how long we’d been standing here for, but it was long enough for my patience to start running out. “Ma’am, we just need to confirm if Elena stayed here and if she did you’d be doing us a really huge favour.”“No.” The reply came rather too quickly. “I’m sorry if you don’t leave right now, I might need to call the cops on you.”Before I knew it, Phil had already whipped out his badge. The shiny metal reflecting beneath the fluorescent lights. “We’re investigating a homicide,” he says calmly. “So you can either decide to let this go the easy way or we come back wi
CHAPTER 121ROB’S POVThe holding room smelled of dust and coffee. I sat rigidly on the metal chair, the sound of metal handcuffs clanked against each other every time I moved. Above me the almost dim fluorescent light flickered at intervals. My irritation heightened along with it. “Let’s try this again,” one of the officers glanced up at me, lazily flipping through a thin file. “I already told you everything.” I leaned back into my chair, letting out a very exhausting sigh. There was no clock in the room and I could only wonder how long I’d been here for. An hour? Two?Another officer who’d been standing at the corner of the room arms crossed inched closer, drawing out one of the chairs across from me. “What was your relationship with Elena like?”“I barely knew her.”The officer raised a brow, scoffing almost immediately. “You really expect us to believe that?”“Yes I do!” I snapped, hitting my cuffed wrists on the table. “She used to work for Isabelle and that’s it.”“And how lo
CHAPTER 120ROB’S POV“Sure you don’t want to get that?” Phil points towards the direction where my phone had been ringing for the past minute. I grunt out, stretching forward to grab the phone. I’m suprised at the caller. It’s Cassy?I couldn’t think of a proper reason for why she would be calling but one reason kept resonating in my mind. I swiped the answer button instantly. “Cassy! Uhm hi, it’s weird to see your call.” I almost cringed from embarrassment after saying that. Probably not the best idea to spew out exactly what’s on your mind. “Yeah, Rob.” A long exhale followed, almost like she was running out of breath.“Are you okay?”“Yes, yes! I know this is already awkward but it shouldn’t be me you should be worried about….” I chime in before she completes her sentence. “Is Jenna okay? What happened?”“I know I wasn’t supposed to tell you this, but I couldn’t figure out who else to call. Jenna is being irrational right now and she won’t listen to me.”I can feel my body an
CHAPTER 83ISABELLE’S POVHot water drops on my skin in tiny continual splatter. I don’t even remember how long I’d been in here since I got back from Christopher’s office. Twenty? Thirty minutes? I’d lost track. My shoulders ache from repeated action. I scrub harder in bid to wash away every trac
CHAPTER 82ISABELL’S POVThe moment I stepped foot inside the building, there was no stopping the rush of memories that flooded within me. I can still remember the first day I came in here. A young and growing model with so much determination, wanting to grow my portfolio. I’d overheard my colleag
CHAPTER 85ISABELLE’S POVI hear the door slam with the usual violent thud. Each step was already memorized and I knew exactly what came after the next. I didn’t even need to look at the clock to know Rob was back. He never came home gently anymore. And it had now become a routine since the last f
CHAPTER 84JENNA’S POV “Do you want some juice? You looked parched.” Adrian questions, his head is poking through my room door. So you could kill me slowly? I rather pass. I manage a smile, “I don’t feel thirsty though, but I’d let you know if I do.” I’d been hunched over my back for the past tw
