Arga’s bunker was a humid, vibrating sarcophagus of scavenged industry, and Sarah was falling apart inside it.

Anji knelt in the dim glow of an overloaded terminal, his vision flickering with the sickly indigo burn of the *Phantom Loom*. Before him, Sarah was slumped in a reclined mechanic's chair, her neck arched in a position that no human vertebrae should comfortably sustain. Below the skin of her throat, thin, translucent filaments—bio-cables of the M-ESSENCE parasite—pulsed with a faint, rhythmic violet light, pushing upward toward her carotid artery.

"She's crossing the threshold, Anji," Arga rasped, struggling to solder a fresh bridge onto a dying capacitor. His voice was raw, his remaining organic eye rimmed with bloodshot exhaustion. "The parasite is building a secondary link. It’s not just using her nerves anymore; it’s anchoring directly to her brain stem."

Anji didn’t answer. He couldn't. His hands were slick with cold sweat and hydraulic fluid, his grip tightening around a sharpened, laser-edged scraper. He felt the parasite inside *his* own chest lurch in anticipation—a primal, digital hunger for more bandwidth, more flesh. He fought it down with a grinding force of will that felt like iron scraping against bone.

"I have to excise the relay," Anji muttered, his voice cracking. He adjusted the brightness on his own retinas, the blue grid narrowing his focus until the room vanished. The bunker turned into a stark topography of anatomy and circuitry. "Arga, kill the main lighting. I need to isolate the heat signature of those filaments. If I nick the vein, she’s gone before I get to the node."

Arga nodded, reaching for a master breaker. The warehouse plunged into absolute darkness, save for the bioluminescent, ghostly webbing visible only to Anji.

"Start."

Anji leaned in. Sarah’s breathing was a stuttered, arrhythmic thing, rattling in her chest. The smell of her hair—charred copper and dried brine—was suffocating. He pressed the scraper tip to the base of her jawline.

*Don’t slip.*

The first incision was the hardest. Sarah’s body buckled, a spasm of phantom neural-pulses driving her head back against the leather rest. She wasn't just in pain; she was currently connected to a global, hive-mind datastream, and Anji was tearing the link apart while the stream was still pulling on the other end.

"Hold her down!" Anji growled.

Arga surged forward, pinning Sarah’s flailing arms with his hydraulic strength. "Anji, it's pushing back! Look at the current!"

Anji looked. In the *Phantom Loom*, the translucent threads flared with an blinding, incandescent fury. They weren't just wires; they were reactive. As he cut, they surged, attempting to bridge the gap through the atmosphere, sensing the metallic tools. He had to keep his pace rapid, cutting faster than the bio-growth could mutate.

"I'm going to sear the edge as I go," Anji decided. He reached into his coat with his off-hand, pulling out a modified plasma-lighter meant for deep-sea welding. He swapped tools, his eyes tracking the filaments like a surgical HUD.

He moved with the brutal efficiency of a scavenger surgeon. *Slice. Seal. Shift.* Each movement took a second of calculated carnage. Each time he cut, the bio-filaments would lash out, drawing blood—not just Sarah's, but his own, as his proximity to the surgery made his own synthetic parts react to the volatile charge.

"Almost… almost there," he whispered, mostly to himself. He was knee-deep in the procedure, his clothes stained with dark, oxygen-starved blood. The filaments reached their epicenter, a thick knot of pulsating white light tucked right under the surface of the skull.

Sarah let out a high, thin keen that died instantly in her throat. Her body slumped, finally relaxing, the violet pulse under her skin fading to a sluggish gray.

"I've got the root," Anji breathed, using a pair of sterile long-nose pliers to rip the remaining tether free. He threw the shimmering, pulsating biological waste onto a piece of ceramic shielding. It skittered and lashed at the air like a dying viper before going completely cold.

Anji stood, his knees buckling. He caught himself against the workstation, panting. His head swam. The *Phantom Loom* shifted, his vision blooming with jagged red static—an overdose of sensory trauma.

"She’s quiet," Arga whispered. He leaned over, scanning Sarah with his one remaining eye, adjusting his hand-held frequency counter. "Vital signs are steady. I'm not seeing any signal rebound, Anji. You scrubbed it clean."

Anji looked at his hands. They were covered in her blood, but it didn't look right in the gloom; it had a dark, shimmering iridescence that made him want to wash them in acid. "It didn't just want her motor function, Arga. It wanted a receiver. If I hadn't been fast, the Nautilus would have been speaking through her throat."

Arga looked at the mass of severed filaments, then back at Anji. "And you? You're exposed. You held the relay in your hand, boss. Your interface took the kickback from that dump."

Anji pulled his jacket together, trying to hide the twitching in his own collarbone, where the corruption was undoubtedly attempting to rebuild what he’d just destroyed elsewhere. He looked at the window, the rusted metal panel showing a sliver of the storm-lashed coast. The wind was howling again, carrying the promise of the incoming tide and the massive digital broadcast from the offshore rigs.

"I’m still here," Anji grunted, checking his internal diagnostic pulse. He could feel it: the core was vibrating, but the link had been dampened. "We didn't fix the world. We just stopped one soul from being stolen for a few hours. That’s enough."

He walked over to a barrel of gray, tepid water and began scrubbing his arms. Every scrape of the cloth against his skin was agonizing, the nerve endings raw from the voltage feedback.

"Sarah will be out for at least an hour," Arga said, watching the monitors for any sign of a perimeter breach. "What’s our window?"

"Tight," Anji replied. He stepped back from the barrel, shaking his hands dry. He felt heavier, more grounded, yet his spirit felt thinner than ever—as if he’d traded his own neural integrity to keep her safe. "The signal drop from the pylon was a smoke bomb. The harvesters aren't stupid; they’ll check the outage. When they realize the Orphan Nodes are offline, they’re going to sweep the sector. We have until the high tide hits the pier, no more."

"And then?"

Anji turned, his eyes searching the cluttered, claustrophobic bunker for his kit. He picked up his primary pulse-emitter and snapped a high-capacity canister into the breech. He didn't answer with words. He tapped the display on the wall, showing the deep-water rig dubbed *Nautilus* and the umbilical conduits that linked the seabed directly to the municipal plumbing system they were sitting on.

"And then," Anji finished, his voice returning to that chilling, calm cadence, "we dive into the pipeline and find the heart of the beast. Whether it beats or it breaks, that's up to us."

Arga looked at his own scarred, mangled body—the metal plates that held him together, the synthetic wire replacing his nervous system. He let out a low, grim laugh, nodding in the direction of the exit.

"Splicing the wound to see what's underneath," Arga remarked. "Classic. Just make sure, when we hit the deep, we don't end up just another patch in their motherboard."

Anji walked past him, patting his comrade’s mechanical shoulder. "If we die down there, we won't be in the hive. We'll be in the static, where they can't ever format us."

He looked back one last time at Sarah, sleeping, purged, and for the first time in months, entirely her own. It was a hell of a sacrifice for a temporary reprieve, but he'd take it. As he shoved the bunker door open, letting the cold, abrasive rain sting his face, Anji allowed himself one moment to breathe. The mission was absolute, the odds were effectively zero, and the cold harbor was waiting.

It was time to get back to the slaughter.

The marshland at the edge of the industrial sector was a soup of oily stagnant water and knee-deep grey sludge. Anji dragged his boots through the muck, the heavy sack of high-voltage cables strapped across his shoulders feeling like a lead shroud. Beside him, Arga waded with a lopsided, mechanical gait, his one good eye scanning the treeline for "proxies"—human remnants caught in terminal feedback loops.Behind them, Sarah moved with an eerie, rhythmic precision, her eyes tracking motion that wasn’t there, her internal navigation locked onto a path that bypassed the worst of the toxic runoff. They weren't just trekking; they were delivering fuel to a contact who dealt in forbidden neuro-stabilizers."Check your signatures," Anji rasped, his voice barely audible over the suck and gurgle of the swamp. He activated his palm display, watching the *Phantom Loom* highlight the fluctuating energy fields of the marsh. "This place is thick with discarde

The slums weren’t supposed to have life, yet they pulsed with a frantic, stuttering electricity. Anji crested a ridge of pulverized shipping containers, his breath hitching in his chest. Below him, the “Orphan Nodes” lived in the basin of a dried-out freighter canal, where thousands of refugees clustered around crude, homemade pylons of rusted scrap and tangled copper. They weren't fighting for food anymore; they were bowing before flickering displays that looped the same erratic, non-sequitur text:[CALIBRATION PENDING. INPUT NECESSARY. UPLINK SOON.]"It's like they're worshiping the crash reports," Arga wheezed, clanking heavily as he limped to the edge of the overlook. His cybernetic collarbone sparked, emitting a wisp of acrid, metallic smoke that he tried to shield with his sleeve. "Look at them, Anji. They're just sitting there, waiting for the sky to upload the new religion."Anji didn't speak. He reached out with his senses&mdash

The broadcast cut through the heavy, sodden air of the maritime slums like a rusted blade through wet canvas. It wasn't just noise; it was an analog FM wave, pulled from a long-dead frequency that shouldn't have been airing anything but static.Click-hiss-screech.The sound filled the rusted corridor, bouncing off the damp, salt-encrusted walls. It was Randy’s voice. Or at least, the digitised nightmare of it."I can see the back of the signal," the audio looped, the voice distorted by deep-bass pitch-shifts that sounded like metal being stretched in a press. "Everything is... wait, are the gears still turning? Anji? If you're listening, the silence is a lie. The static... the static is just us being rearranged."Anji stopped dead in the narrow service alleyway. His left hand—the one cursed by the M-ESSENCE—began to burn with a dull, white-hot agony. The scent of ionized copper and rotting sea-brine hit Anji like a physical blow as they squeezed through the final drainage grate into Arga’s bunker. It wasn't a bunker in the traditional sense—it was an atmospheric pressure vessel reclaimed from a decommissioned industrial boiler, buried deep beneath the silt and ship-scrap of the lower maritime sector."Down! Fast, damn it!" Arga barked, his mechanical collarbone grinding in rhythm with his rapid movements. He slammed the circular hatch shut and spun the locking wheel, the metal singing with the tension of an absolute vacuum seal. The air inside was pressurized, humid, and thick with the tang of electricity. Arga didn’t waste a breath. He scrambled toward his workstation—a terrifying sprawl of cannibalized server racks, open-core transformers, and rolls of thick, industrial-grade copper wiring that coiled around the bunker like petrified intestines.Anji slid Sarah into a specialized restraint chair—a piece of surgical tech rigged w

Sarah didn't fall so much as she disintegrated, her collapse turning into a graceless heap of scrap and muscle on the rusted tracks of the abandoned yard. Her limbs jerked in sharp, syncopated intervals—the robotic kick-back of a central processor attempting a remote handshake with an unreachable satellite. She gasped, a sound that quickly devolved into the harsh, electronic rasp of cooling fans struggling against dust-choked intakes.Anji dropped to his knees, ignoring the metallic crunch of the track bed. He grabbed Sarah by the shoulders, his fingers sinking into the frayed fabric of her jacket. Beneath his palms, he could feel it—a phantom pulse, the rhythmic, high-frequency click-click-hiss of an unauthorized M-ESSENCE link attempting to tunnel into her nervous system."Arga, get the dampener field up! Now!" Anji shouted, his own vision swimming as the blue grid of his Phantom Loom pulsed in synchronization with her distress.Arga was there in an instant, dragging a bulky, copper
