Flora POV

The Uber ride back from the lounge felt entirely too short. When the car pulled away from the curb, leaving me standing alone in the driveway, the sheer silence of the neighborhood hit me.

Emily was officially at the lake house. The house was empty. Well, almost empty.

I unlocked the front door as quietly as I could, stepping into the dim entryway. The only illumination came from the soft, amber accent lights in the hallway. I kicked off my heels, holding them in my hand as I padded softly across the hardwood floor, my emerald dress rustling slightly with every step. I assumed Eugene was already asleep in his room.

"You're back early."

I jumped, a small gasp escaping my lips.

Eugene was sitting in the armchair in the corner of the living room, completely draped in shadows. The only light hitting him was the faint glow from the hallway. He had discarded his shoes, but he was still wearing those dark jeans and the forest green turtleneck that had driven me crazy all evening. He had a glass of amber liquid resting loosely in his hand, and his eyes were fixed entirely on me.

"Eugene," I breathed, my hand flying to my chest, right over the deep neckline of my dress. My heart was suddenly hammering against my ribs. "You scared me. I thought you were asleep."

"Couldn't sleep," he said, his voice lower and rougher than usual. He took a slow sip from his glass, his gaze locked onto the exposed skin of my collarbones, tracking the way my chest heaved as I tried to catch my breath. "How was the rest of your date?"

"It was... fine," I lied, stepping a fraction closer into the room, drawn to him like a magnet despite the warning bells screaming in my head. "Sam is very nice."

Eugene let out a low, dark sound that was almost a scoff. He set his glass down on the side table with a soft clink and stood up. In the shadows, his broad frame looked massive, completely overpowering the space between us.

"Nice," he repeated, taking a slow, deliberate step toward me. "Is that what you want, Flora? A nice boy?"

Eugene’s question hung heavily in the dark room, his deep voice vibrating right through me. “Is that what you want, Flora? A nice boy?”

I stood my ground as he took that slow, deliberate step toward me. The shadows stretched across his broad shoulders, and the scent of him—expensive cologne, whiskey, and pure warmth—filled the small space between us.

"Why do you care what kind of boy I want, Eugene?" I countered, my voice trembling slightly, though I forced myself to look him dead in the eye. "You're the one who told me to go. You're the one who sat at that table and practically begged me to go find someone my own age."

Eugene stopped just inches away from me. He was so close I could feel the heat radiating off his chest, towering over me in the dim light. His jaw clenched so hard a muscle ticked in his cheek.

"I was doing what I was supposed to do," he growled low, his gaze dropping to my lips before snapping back to my eyes. "I was trying to be the adult. I was trying to remember my place."

"And what about now?" I whispered, my heart hammering so loudly against my ribs I was certain he could hear it. I took a tiny step forward, intentionally closing the last bit of distance, my bare shoulder brushing against the soft green fabric of his turtleneck. "Are you still trying to remember your place tonight?"

Eugene let out a sharp, ragged breath. His hand twitched at his side, his fingers flexing as if he was fighting every single instinct in his body to keep from grabbing my waist.

"Flora," he warned, his voice dropping into a dangerous, gravelly register. "You have no idea what you're doing right now. You're playing with a fire that will absolutely consume you."

"Maybe I want to burn," I challenged softly.

The words had barely left my mouth when Eugene went completely rigid. For a fraction of a second, I thought he was going to pull me against him. His eyes flared with something primal, and his hand actually rose, his knuckles brushing the bare skin of my collarbone. A violent jolt of electricity shot straight down my spine.

But then, as if someone had poured ice water through his veins, he tore his hand away.

He closed his eyes tight, his chest heaving under the green turtleneck as he forced a brutal, suffocating wave of discipline back over himself. When he opened his eyes again, the raw hunger was locked behind a cold, hard wall of regret.

"No," he said, his voice dropping into a flat, strained whisper. He took a massive step backward, completely breaking the heat between us and leaving me freezing in the dark room. "No, Flora. This is wrong."

I stared at him, my lips parting in shock, the sudden rejection stinging like a physical slap.

"I apologize," Eugene said, his tone turning fiercely formal, though his clenched fists betrayed how hard he was fighting himself. "I've had too much to drink, and I let this go entirely too far. I am your friend's father, and I am the adult in this house. This will not happen again."

Before I could even find my voice to reply, he turned on his heel. He walked down the hallway with rigid, fast strides, his bedroom door closing behind him with a sharp, definitive click.

The lock turned.

I stood alone in the dark living room, my skin still tingling where his knuckles had brushed me, completely humiliated and utterly consumed by the fire he had just walked away from.

  • Falling for My Best Friend's Dad   CHAPTER 70: A CLEAN SLATE

Eugene's POV The pale, quiet light of dawn was just beginning to filter through the curtains when I gently slipped out from beneath the heavy blankets. I stood by the side of the bed for a long moment, looking down at Flora. She was fast asleep, her dark hair fanned out across the white pillow, her features completely relaxed and peaceful. I reached down, carefully pulling the sheets up over her bare shoulder, and pressed a soft kiss to her forehead. She stirred slightly, a tiny, contented sigh escaping her lips, but she didn’t wake. Leaving her room, I walked down the quiet corridor toward the guest wing, the lightness from last night firmly rooted in my chest. But before I could fully focus on the future with my girl, I had one final piece of trash to discard. When I reached the guest room, I didn't bother knocking. I pushed the door open to find Victoria already awake, sitting on the edge of the mattress next to two large, fully packed suitcases. She looked up, her expression

  • Falling for My Best Friend's Dad   CHAPTER 69: THE TRUTH IN THE DARK

Flora's POV I sat on the very edge of my bed, my knees pulled tightly against my chest, staring blankly at the locked wooden door. The sound of the shattering lemonade glasses down the hall was still ringing loudly in my ears, looping over and over again like a horrific nightmare. *He kissed her.* The image of Victoria’s arms wrapped around Eugene's neck, her lips pressed against his, burned behind my eyelids every single time I blinked. A cold, hollow ache settled deep into my stomach. Just hours ago on the patio, I had finally let my walls down. I had stopped running. I had allowed myself to believe that the rules didn't matter, that the pregnancy didn't have to be a tragedy, and that we could actually work. I had realized I loved him. And then, in a single, crushing second, reality had smashed everything to pieces. Suddenly, a firm, heavy knock sounded against my door, making me jump. "Flora," Eugene’s deep, rough voice echoed from the other side. "Open the door." "Go away,

  • Falling for My Best Friend's Dad   CHAPTER 68: THE FALLOUT

Eugene's POV The silence in the study was deafening, a thick, suffocating weight that crushed the remaining air right out of my lungs. "Emily—" I started, my voice raw and entirely stripped of its usual authority. I took a frantic step toward the door, my hands reaching out, but the sheer horror on my daughter's face stopped me dead in my tracks. Emily didn’t let me finish. She let out a sharp, choked gasp, stepped backward out of the doorway, and completely turned on her heel. A second later, the sharp clatter of a silver tray echoed through the hallway. Flora had dropped the lemonade. I caught a fleeting glimpse of her wide, tear-filled eyes, her face completely pale and broken, before she turned and fled right behind my daughter. The heavy sound of their racing footsteps echoed up the grand staircase. Two doors slammed shut upstairs, one after the other, vibrating through the structural beams of the house. They were running from me. Both of them. "Eugene, see?" Victoria’s vo

  • Falling for My Best Friend's Dad   CHAPTER 67: THE TRAP

Eugene's POV The heavy oak door of my study shut with a satisfying, solid click, instantly cutting off the rest of the house. I walked over to my desk, throwing my car keys onto the leather tray and dropping into my chair. For the first time in what felt like months, the air in the room didn’t feel heavy. I felt light. I felt genuinely happy. The weekend was over. The house was quiet again. Emily had spent the last two days laughing, smiling, and breathing easy, which was exactly what I had wanted for her. But more than that, the suffocating wall that Flora had built between us had completely crumbled. I leaned back in my chair, staring at the ceiling, a slow smile pulling at the corners of my lips. I could still feel the warmth of her skin under my hands from the patio. I could still taste her on my lips from the stolen kiss in the pantry. *I trust your judgment, Flora. Entirely.* The memory of her blushing face across the dinner table made a low growl of satisfaction rumble in m

  • Falling for My Best Friend's Dad   CHAPTER 66: STOLEN MOMENTS

Flora's POV The bright morning sunlight streamed through the kitchen windows, reflecting off the stainless-steel countertops and casting a warm, golden glow over the entire room. The rich, comforting scent of brewing coffee and sizzling bacon filled the air. "Flora, hand me that spatula, please," Emily said, her hair pulled back into a messy bun as she stood over the stove, carefully flipping pancakes. "Here you go," I smiled, sliding the plastic spatula into her hand. Breakfast was a loud, chaotic, and entirely happy affair. Marcus and Josh were already sitting at the long kitchen island, deeply engrossed in a debate about sports statistics, while Sophia sat next to them, casually scrolling through her phone and typing out her resume to send to Eugene. "Good morning," Eugene’s deep, commanding voice rumbled from the doorway. The entire kitchen went quiet for a split second as he walked in. Even in a simple navy polo shirt and dark trousers, he carried an undeniable authority t

  • Falling for My Best Friend's Dad   CHAPTER 65: SAFE HARBOR

Flora's POV Sophia didn't hesitate. She threw her arms around me, pulling me into a tight, fierce hug that caught me completely off guard. "Don't you dare let that woman get inside your head, Flora," Sophia whispered urgently against my shoulder, her voice vibrating with protective anger. "She is using the only weapon she thinks she has left, which is guilt. But she doesn't have any real power here. Not unless you let her." I pulled back, wiping a stray tear from my cheek, feeling a massive wave of relief just having everything out in the open. "I know. I told her off in the hallway. I told her to go ahead and tell Emily. But Sophia... the thought of Emily looking at me with hatred? It makes my stomach twist into knots." "Then don't give Victoria the satisfaction of controlling the narrative," Sophia said firmly, her sharp corporate mind instantly switching into problem-solving mode. "You and Eugene need to talk to Emily. Together. It has to come from you two, completely on your
