CHAPTER 1 - THE COUNTDOWN

The afternoon sun shone through the windows of Emily’s bedroom. It was the first day of their final college break. Instead of going to the beach, Flora and Emily were surrounded by textbooks and empty coffee cups. They had been best friends since childhood.

Emily lay on her bed, staring at the ceiling. "I can't believe we are almost done with college," she sighed. "In a few weeks, we will be real adults."

Flora smiled, but she felt a little nervous. "Don't remind me. Time went by so fast."

"We survived four years of hard exams," Emily said, sitting up with a mischievous smile. "We conquered everything, Flora. Well... almost everything."

Flora closed her notebook. She knew exactly what Emily was talking about. "Emily, please don't start."

"Oh, come on!" Emily laughed, sliding off the bed to sit next to Flora. "We are about to graduate. You are smart and beautiful. But you are also entering the real world as a virgin."

"It's not a big deal," Flora said, her cheeks turning red.

"It's not a bad thing," Emily said, nudging her. "But seriously, Flora. We are in our final year. Why haven't you done it yet? Plenty of guys like you."

Flora looked down at her hands. "You know how I am. I don't want it to be with a random guy at a college party. I want it to be special. I want to feel a real spark. But all the guys our age just seem so immature."

Emily’s voice became gentle. "I understand. You want a deep connection. There is nothing wrong with waiting for a man who is mature." She grinned again. "But graduation is coming fast, Flo. If we don't find you a mature man soon, I will have to find one for you!"

"Please don't," Flora laughed.

"Alright, let's get some food," Emily said, standing up. "I'm going down to the kitchen to grab us some snacks. Don't study while I'm gone."

"I won't," Flora said.

Emily left the room and shut the door. Flora sat alone in the quiet room. She thought about what she just said. *A mature man.* She wondered if she would ever meet someone who could make her heart race.

Suddenly, she heard the heavy front door open downstairs. Then, a deep, grown-up voice called out to Emily from the hallway.

Emily's dad was home.

Is this level of English better for your story? We can move on to the next part whenever you are ready.

Flora froze when she heard his voice. It was deep, calm, and completely confident.

Downstairs, he was asking Emily how her classes were going and what the two girls had been doing all afternoon. Hearing him speak made Flora think back to the words she had just said to Emily. A mature man.

Suddenly, her heart began to beat faster.

Flora had known Emily’s dad, Eugene, for years. When she was a teenager, she used to have a huge crush on him. He was tall, handsome, and always treated her with so much kindness. But back then, Flora knew it was wrong to think about her best friend's father that way, so she forced herself to hide her feelings and forget about them.

But now, she wasn't a teenager anymore. She was a woman about to graduate from college. For the first time in years, those old feelings rushed back, stronger than before. Eugene was exactly the kind of man she wanted—someone mature, steady, and grown-up.

Eugene had been alone for a very long time. His wife had died when Emily was just a little girl, and he had never remarried. He had dedicated his whole life to raising Emily and focusing on his career.

Flora stood up from the floor and walked over to the bedroom mirror. She smoothed down her shirt and fixed her hair. Her heart was pounding against her ribs. She could hear Emily and Eugene walking down the hallway downstairs, their voices getting closer to the kitchen.

Flora took a deep breath, opened the bedroom door, and decided to go downstairs.

Flora walked down the stairs, her heart thumping in her chest. She found Emily and Eugene standing by the kitchen island. Eugene was taking some groceries out of a paper bag. He looked just as handsome as she remembered—tall, broad-shouldered, with a few lines around his eyes that made him look even more mature.

When he heard her footsteps, he looked up and smiled warmly.

"Flora! Look who's here," Emily said, holding a box of juice.

"Hello, Flora," Eugene said. His voice was deep and smooth. "It is so good to see you. Emily told me you both were coming home for the break."

"Hi, Mr. Eugene," Flora said. Her voice shook just a little, but she tried to keep it steady. "It’s good to see you too."

"Oh, please, call me Eugene. You’re practically an adult now, almost done with college," he said with a friendly laugh. He walked over to give her a polite, welcoming hug.

When his arms wrapped around her, Flora’s whole body tensed up. He smelled like expensive wood and rain. Her skin felt hot where his hands lightly touched her back. It was just a normal, friendly greeting, but to Flora, it felt like an electric shock.

Eugene pulled back, completely unaware of how she was feeling. "You look great, Flora. Emily tells me you are studying very hard for your final exams."

"Yes, I am trying my best," Flora murmured. She felt dizzy just standing close to him.

Eugene reached past her to grab a bowl of fruit from the counter. As he did, his forearm accidentally brushed against her bare arm.

A sharp shiver went straight down Flora's spine. Her breath hitched in her throat, and she hoped desperately that he didn't notice the goosebumps rising on her skin.

"Sorry about that," Eugene said easily, stepping back to give her space. "So, what are the plans for tonight, girls? Are you staying in, or going out?"

"We are staying in to study," Emily said, leaning against the counter. "But we are starving. What’s for dinner, Dad?"

Eugene smiled at his daughter, then looked back at Flora. His brown eyes were calm and kind. "Well, since Flora is visiting, I should cook something special. How does steak and potatoes sound?"

"That sounds amazing," Flora said. She kept her hands behind her back so he wouldn't see them shaking.

"Perfect. You two go back upstairs and relax," Eugene said warmly. "I'll call you when the food is ready."
