Mag-log inNEAH’S POV
When I returned to our table, I immediately noticed the tension in Dave’s expression. A strange sense of dread slowly crawled into my chest. I didn’t know why, but suddenly, I was terrified of what he was about to say.
His attention was fixed entirely on his phone. He didn’t even notice me approaching until I cleared my throat softly and sat down across from him.
“Love,” he murmured quietly. I gave him a faint smile, pretending not to notice the uneasiness written all over his face. What happened while I was gone? Did someone call him? Was it work again?
“What happened?” I asked calmly. I wanted to believe he wouldn’t ruin this night. We had only just started trying to fix our marriage. I didn’t want to feel again that his work still mattered more to him than I did. He let out a deep breath. But he still couldn’t look directly into my eyes. I could tell he was hesitating, unsure whether he should say what was on his mind.
“Dave,” I called softly.
“We have an emergency meeting, and they need me at the company,” he said quietly. “We could lose millions, love.” A bitter smile slowly formed on my lips. I wasn’t surprised anymore. Was this how we would always be? Would every date we had always end up ruined? Would they always call for him every single time there was another meeting? I knew how desperately Dave wanted to achieve his dreams, and I could never bring myself to stop him. I didn’t want to force him to choose me over his career. I just wanted him to choose me willingly. From the bottom of his heart. Because honestly, he never really had to choose. If only he had learned how to balance his time between work and me.
I didn’t answer him immediately. Instead, I stared at the untouched food on our table.
“Love, I really need to be there,” he said again. Finally, I looked into his pleading eyes. As though the decision depended entirely on me. But what could I do except let him go? Let him leave me behind over and over again.
“Go,” I answered softly. I saw the hesitation flicker in his eyes. I forced myself to smile faintly. “If they need you there, then just go. I’ll wait for you here.” As painful as it was that he still couldn’t decide on his own… I had no choice. All I ever wanted was for him to choose me without me having to ask. Without forcing him.
He reached for my hand. I stared blankly at the way his fingers wrapped around mine.
“Wait for me here,” he said softly. “I’ll come back. I’ll try to finish the meeting as quickly as possible so I can return right away.” I nodded faintly even though a part of me wanted to stop him.
Wanted to beg him— Choose me. Please don’t leave me alone again. He stood up and pressed a kiss against my forehead.
“I’ll come back,” he repeated. I didn’t answer this time. I simply watched him walk farther and farther away until he disappeared from sight completely. And as the cold wind blew across the rooftop. The food on our table slowly grew colder too.
I let out a deep breath. What chance did I really stand against his work? Honestly, sometimes I thought it would have been easier if there had been another woman. At least then, there would have been a clear reason for you to leave. A clear reason for our relationship to fall apart.
But this? He never hurt me physically. He never cheated. And yet somehow, loving him was exhausting because no matter what happened, work always came before me.
I understood him. I supported him. But would I always be the only one trying to understand us? Our child died. I needed him during those moments more than ever. And still, he stayed at work. He couldn’t even excuse himself from work to come see me.
At first, I tried to distract myself while waiting for him. I watched the city lights. Listened to the violin music. Repeatedly, I told myself he would come back. I forced myself to believe it. Would he really come back?
I knew Dave was trying to fix our relationship, so I wanted to believe he would keep his promise. But as time passed, the food on the table grew colder. The candle slowly burned away. And the heaviness inside my chest became harder and harder to ignore.
I glanced at the time. An hour had already passed since he left. I picked up my phone and tried calling him. It rang endlessly. I sent him a message too.
Where are you?
But there was no reply. I forced myself to stay calm. Ten minutes later, I called again. Still nothing. My grip around my phone tightened. He wouldn’t do this again. I knew he wanted to make things right between us. I knew he would come back.
I called again. And again. But still, no answer. No reply. No sign of him. Something inside my chest slowly cracked apart.
I looked up when a waiter refilled my glass with water after noticing I had emptied it while waiting.
“Would you like us to reheat the food, ma’am?” My eyes drifted toward the untouched dishes on our table.
“Maybe later,” I answered quietly. “I’m still waiting for my husband.”
The waiter gave me a strained smile before quietly walking away. I lowered my head, struggling to stop the tears gathering in my eyes. Why was it like this? Why did it still hurt so much no matter how hard I tried to understand him?
9:57 PM.
The restaurant was slowly emptying out. The violinist from earlier was already gone. The rooftop had fallen silent. Even the wind felt colder now.
I called Dave again. Voicemail. And at that moment, a part of me finally grew tired. Because waiting for someone who could never guarantee they would come back. Was exhausting.
Should I still believe his promises even when I was always the one left hurting in the end? A soft, bitter laugh escaped me as I wiped away the tears that finally slid down my cheeks. I was pathetic. When would I finally accept that this was who he really was?
I would always come second. Work would always come before me.
“Ma’am.” I looked up when the manager approached our table carefully. He offered me an apologetic smile.
“I’m really sorry, but we’re about to close.”
“I’m sorry,” I whispered softly.
I stood up and grabbed my bag. Then I pulled cash from my wallet to pay for the food that had gone cold while waiting for Dave.
“Thank you for dining with us, ma’am. Please come back next time.” I gave the manager a faint smile. I wasn’t even sure there would be a next time anymore.
I walked out of the restaurant feeling like. Whatever feelings I still had left for Dave had been left behind there too.
Because hoping was painful. And forgiving someone who kept making the same mistakes over and over again.
Was even harder.
DAVE'S POVI kept sneezing after changing into dry clothes. It was too cold earlier when I got wet in the rain. I was forcing myself not to shiver so Neah wouldn't notice. After getting dressed, I stepped out of the bathroom. Neah had already changed as well. She was sitting on the single sofa, hugging her knees to her chest. She looked like a frightened child. She may have changed, but the things she was afraid of never did. She still seemed terrified of the dark, especially when there was loud thunder and sharp lightning."Stay here, I'm going to check the kitchen and see what I can cook," I told her, but she immediately stood up."I'm coming with you." Just like I thought, she was afraid of being left alone. I walked out of the room first while she followed closely behind me. When I suddenly stopped walking, she bumped into my back because she was standing too close."I'm sorry," she muttered. I turned around and took one of her hands. "What are you doing?" she asked irritably. Why
NEAH'S POVWhen we reached the bridge, a man wearing a raincoat suddenly blocked our path. Dave rolled down his window."Sir, you can't pass through anymore because the water is already too high. The road has also been damaged because of the sudden storm. It's better if you turn back," the man shouted over the deafening sound of the rain and thunder, making him difficult to hear."We can't go home?" I asked Dave anxiously."You heard what he said," Dave replied grumpily.I tightly closed my eyes. I needed to go home because my son would surely be waiting for me, but if I insisted on getting my way, something might happen to both Dave and me.Dave reversed the car and headed back toward the hotel. As time passed, the rain only became heavier. The sky had turned so dark that it looked like nighttime even though it was barely four o'clock in the afternoon. We continued down the road, Dave unable to drive any faster because the rain was so heavy that he could barely see the road ahead. I
NEAH’S POVI was silently arranging my things. Is there really no other way for me not to be with Dave? I have been wishing for him to have an emergency in another project so someone else could go with me, but nothing is happening. Two hours from now we will leave, but I still haven’t heard any news of an emergency. I let out a deep sigh. It feels like this will be the longest day of my life.“Mommy, are you okay?” I looked at my child when he spoke. “You’ve been holding your things so tightly.” he added. I looked at the folder in my hand, it was already wrinkled because of how tightly I was holding it.“Be good to Auntie Claire, okay?” I reminded my child even though I tell him that every day.“Yes mommy, don’t worry.” he answered with a smile.I said goodbye to my child and left to go to Sy Elite because that is where I will meet Dave. When I arrived at the lobby, I met Cassandra. I just hope she is not suspicious of me and Dave because I don’t want trouble.“Good morning, Neah,” sh
NEAH’S POVAfter we had dinner with Liam, he also dropped us off at home. I carried Kaiden and turned to face Liam.“Thank you for the dinner, Liam. Are you going home now or heading straight to the hospital?”“I’ll go home first to rest. My duty is tomorrow anyway.” I nodded.“Alright then, drive safely. Go to sleep as soon as you get home so you can rest your body. I know your job is really exhausting.” He smiled and then kissed my forehead, the same way he did to Kaiden.“Good night, Neah. Good night, son.” He said to Kaiden.“Drive safely, daddy. I love you.” My son said sweetly. Liam smiled warmly.“Of course, don’t be naughty with your mom so she can also rest, okay?”“Yes daddy, I promise.”“Bye, Neah.” I nodded and smiled at Liam. He then turned around and got into his car. When he was no longer in sight, I was about to go inside the house when I noticed a car parked not far from us.I noticed the driver was looking at us, but then he closed the passenger window. Maybe I’m jus
DAVE’S POVI was just about to leave my office when Cassandra entered.“Are you ready?” she asked. I grabbed my coat and wore it before walking toward her.“Let’s go,” I walked ahead first to open the door. She stepped out first before I followed after her.“Oh, hi Neah.” Every time I run into Neah and see her, it feels like electricity runs through my body. After I closed the door, I looked at Neah who had just come out of her office too.“Hi,” she answered before giving a small smile.“Are you heading home too? Let’s go down together.” Neah smiled again. Cassandra and Neah walked side by side while I stayed ahead of them. They were talking again about the things they planned to do for their business.I couldn’t help but think, does Neah not think about me anymore? Did she really forget me that quickly? As for me, I’m still stuck in the past. Almost every day, I regret always choosing work first. I didn’t even realize that little by little, I was already losing the woman I loved.Whe
DAVE’S POVI couldn’t stop thinking about Neah’s child. I didn’t clearly see his face because his back was facing me. I don’t know if I just can’t accept the fact that she already has a child with someone else or if her child and I are actually blood related. I know Neah, we spent a long time together so I know she wouldn’t easily find someone else right away.I leaned back against my chair and tightly shut my eyes. Whenever I remember her cold and blank eyes, it feels like she wasn’t lying. As if she was certain that I really wasn’t the father of her child. Then again, she’s the one who truly knows the truth, who the real father of her child is.I want to win her back. If it’s true that the child is from another man, how am I supposed to continue my plan of courting her again?A deep sigh escaped my lips.“Why do you have pictures of Neah?” I quickly opened my eyes and got shocked when I saw Cassandra. She was already holding the pictures and magazines about Neah.“What are you doing
NEAH’S POVThree days after we lost our child, I sat silently in front of a tiny white coffin. It was so small. Far too small to hold the reality that a life had once existed there. I clutched the ultrasound photo tightly in my hands while tears streamed endlessly down my face. I no longer knew how
NEAH’S POVRain hammered against the windows as I stared blankly at my phone screen. My hands trembled while I clutched my stomach, the pain inside me growing sharper, as though something was slowly tearing me apart from within.“Please…” I whispered shakily, dialing Dave’s number again. For the se
DAVE’S POVI stared blankly into space, I still couldn’t forget my encounter with Neah earlier. She was still beautiful, the sadness that used to linger in her eyes was no longer there. Until now, guilt continued to consume me. Why didn’t she tell me that her parents died in an accident? Why didn’t
DAVE’S POVThe entire office remained quiet except for the sound of keyboards clicking and the soft rustle of documents as I flipped through the pages. My eyes stayed focused on the laptop while I continuously reviewed the project’s financial reports. Ever since I was transferred here to New York t
