AVELINE'S POV

(Twenty years ago)

If someone had told me the greatest mistake of my life would begin with my curiosity, I would have laughed.

Now, whenever I look back on those days, I sometimes wonder how different everything might have been if I'd ignored the stories surrounding the Northern Wilds and stayed safely inside the packhouse that morning.

If I'd never gone looking for monsters.

But I did.

And that single decision changed far more than my own life.

  • Fated to my Alpha nemesis    Theory

AVELINE'S POV As I had suspected, there were no beasts stalking the Northern Wilds. It was, for all appearances, no different from every other forest I'd ever explored. I found myself wondering when, how and, more importantly, who had started the rumours about the enormously dangerous creatures said to dwell there. The fact that those rumours had become accepted as undeniable truth fascinated me. They appeared in research texts, educational materials, historical records and countless other sources. Whoever had orchestrated such an elaborate deception had clearly been someone with extraordinary influence. I never encountered any of the beasts of the Northern Wilds. Not once. Just in case my theory proved wrong, however, I remained prepared for an encounter with the creatures so many insisted were real. Three weeks passed. Still nothing. By then, I was almost certain I was right. Everything we knew about the Northern Wilds might have been little more than propaganda, or perhaps

  • Fated to my Alpha nemesis    Secretive

AVELINE'S POV "Which pack are you from?" I'd asked the next day when I stumbled across Nereth again. At the time, I considered it nothing more than an amusing coincidence that he'd somehow ended up at the dying moat, southeast of the collapsing pillar, a little to the right of the watchtower, at the exact place I'd planned to begin that day's exploration. We'd parted ways the previous afternoon without making any plans to meet again. Neither of us had mentioned returning to the Wilds. Yet somehow... There he was. Standing exactly where our paths happened to cross once more. I knew he didn't necessarily have to be from either the Eastern or Western Pack simply because they shared borders with the Northern Wilds. Sirus's coronation had drawn werewolves from nearly every territory. The Eastern Pack had been practically teeming with visitors like myself. Normally, I could identify where someone came from just by listening to them speak. I'd always had a good ear for acc

AVELINE'S POV (Twenty years ago) If someone had told me the greatest mistake of my life would begin with my curiosity, I would have laughed. It put my sister, and eventually everyone I came to care about, directly in the path of a tragedy none of us saw coming. The tales and myths surrounding the Northern Wilds were never as popular in the Winter Pack as they were in the Eastern and Western Packs. That wasn't particularly surprising considering those two territories shared borders with the forest itself, while ours lay comfortably farther away. To most wolves in the Winter Pack, the Wilds were little more than an unsettling story told to reckless children. To

  • Fated to my Alpha nemesis    Mourning the living

DAMON'S POV "Why?" The word barely rose above a whisper. It didn't sound like my voice. It sounded like it belonged to the frightened little boy I'd been twelve years ago. Mother flinched. Not visibly enough for anyone else to notice. I noticed. Her lips parted. Then closed again. "I'm sorry." "No." The word left me before I could stop it. "No." My voice was louder this time. Somehow, I found the will to go on. To speak. "That won't work." Silence. The fire crackled quietly behind me. Somewhere outside, water continued to trickle through the stream as though the world hadn't just turned itself inside out. "I'm sorry..." she tried again, her voice barely above a whisper. The female I'd met at the bottom of the ravine, with her fierce composure in the face of those creatures, and the female standing before me now felt like two entirely different people. I still couldn't wrap my head around any of it. Twelve years. Twelve entire years. I laughed. It wasn't amuse

  • Fated to my Alpha nemesis    Why?

DAMON'S POV "Sorry," she said, as though the word alone could serve as an answer. As though it could explain twelve years. It took far too long for her apology to register. A constant ringing filled my ears, growing louder with every passing second until it drowned out almost everything else. My mind felt impossibly loud... And utterly hollow. I kept trying to form a thought. Something coherent. Something that might become words. Nothing came. The female standing before me looked like my mother. She sounded like my mother. Even the way she held herself tugged at memories I'd buried years ago. Yet every instinct insisted it was impossible. I'd watched them lower the coffin into the ground. I'd stood beside Rhoda while the council representative spoke of loss and sacrifice. I'd spent twelve years forcing myself to accept that I would never hear Mother's voice again. People did not simply come back from the dead. Instead, I remembered. I remembered the

  • Fated to my Alpha nemesis    Not a ghost

MICHAELA'S POVI hadn't understood why Damon had stiffened at the sight of the sorceress. From everything he'd told me, she was the one who had saved him and Rhoda from the creatures in the Northern Wilds. She'd saved me too.I'd assumed he would look at her with gratitude.Perhaps even admiration.I'd been trying to figure out how to tell him that this female was the very same sorceress who had tried to kill me months ago. I had no idea how he would react to that revelation.Instead...When we both turned toward the voice and he saw her standing in the doorway, the warmth that had filled his eyes only moments ago vanished. It wasn't replaced by confusion.Or gratitude.Or even suspicion. It became something else entirely.Utter bewilderment. The kind that seemed to strip a person down to nothing. He looked as though he'd seen a ghost.No...Not a ghost.Someone he'd convinced himself he would never see again. His shoulders went rigid beneath an invisible weight.Instead of gratitude,

  • Fated to my Alpha nemesis    Desire

When our lips meet, every form of reasoning obliterates. My mind combust into electric sensations. He growls, taking control of the kiss. Mouth claiming mine with the urgency of a collapsing star. Heat pours between us, reckless and blinding. When my lips part, it isn't an invitation. It’s ine

  • Fated to my Alpha nemesis    Stupid Alpha Aura

After saying goodbye to Bailey, I head towards rehearsals, feet practically bouncing in anticipation. I weave between stalls, the hum of pre-festival chatter around me, but stop short when I see him — leaning against the edge of the square, half-shifted, green eyes glinting under the lanterns.

  • Fated to my Alpha nemesis    A Spectacle of My Own Making

The first time I saw the Tule Dance, I was seven. I fell in love with the performance immediately and wanted to participate the very next year. Mum said I was too young and not yet developed enough, so I waited. When I turned twelve, I asked again. After a lot of begging and convincing, I was al

  • Fated to my Alpha nemesis    Something about a dead rat

Scanning my wardrobe for a few seconds, I choose a crimson-colored tube top and a short pleated skirt. I smile at my reflection in the mirror after putting it on. I apply mascara, eyeliner, pink gloss, then pull my hair up into a messy bun. Sitting on my bed, I slip on my favorite pair of black s
