Chapter 3

Author: Peach on the Boat
The look on my face must've been real.

Suri froze for a second.

Then the impatience came right back.

"Quit throwing a fit."

I was already sick of the way she talked to me.

Even the face I'd crushed on for years was starting to lose its charm.

"I'm your husband, right? I ended up in the hospital after trying to kill myself. You came home without asking if I was okay. All you've done is criticize me."

I looked her straight in the eye.

"What gives you the right to treat me like this?"

My anger only seemed to fuel hers.

She grabbed my wrist, her voice turning ice-cold. "Because you did this to yourself."

She wasn't squeezing hard.

But her hand landed right on the cut across my wrist.

Pain shot through me.

I clenched my jaw and didn't make a sound.

A second later, she let go.

Like she'd already lost interest, she turned over, giving me her back.

"This is the last time. Don't ever fake another suicide attempt to threaten me again."

I lay there beside her, my thoughts a complete mess.

***

The next morning, Suri was already gone when I woke up.

I got dressed and headed downstairs.

She was at the dining table, eating breakfast.

The butler, Patrick, greeted me.

"Good morning, Mr. Carter."

I paused.

Without looking up, Suri said, "Come eat."

The table was loaded with food.

'So this is how rich people live. Even breakfast is over the top.'

I sat across from Suri as Patrick set a bowl of mango tapioca pudding in front of me.

I just stared at it.

'Who eats something this sweet for breakfast?'

The smell of mango hit me, and I frowned.

"Why is there mango in this?"

Patrick answered, "Julian had the mangoes flown in. They're his favorite..."

My appetite disappeared.

"I don't want it."

A fork clattered against a plate.

Suri looked up, her voice cool.

"Connor Carter. Enough."

I was already barely holding it together.

"So now I'm not allowed to skip mango?"

"You're only refusing it because Julian sent it." Her face went cold. "Connor, when are you going to stop being so jealous?"

Me?

Jealous of Julian?

I had no idea what twenty-seven-year-old me had been like around Suri.

Probably pathetic. Insecure. Petty.

But we were married.

And she didn't even know I was allergic to mangoes?

Before I could say anything, Patrick announced, "Julian's here."

A soft voice followed.

"Suri, am I interrupting?"

A tall man walked in through the front door.

The butler and maids greeted him like he belonged there.

I only needed one look to know he was Julian.

One thing immediately stood out.

Patrick called me "Mr. Carter."

He called Julian... "Julian."

The difference said everything.

No wonder twenty-seven-year-old me had gone after him.

I was Suri's husband.

Yet I couldn't compete with the way she openly favored another guy, all because they were "childhood friends."

Anyone would've grown bitter.

Julian looked at me, concern all over his face.

"Connor, I heard you slit your wrist... Are you okay?"

I let out a quiet scoff.

I had no intention of playing nice.

I didn't know what twenty-seven-year-old me had been like around them.

Maybe he'd been a pushover.

Maybe he'd let them walk all over him because he loved Suri too much.

But I was eighteen.

I wasn't in love with Suri.

So I had no reason to swallow my pride.

Julian gave Suri an awkward smile.

"Suri, I'm sorry. Connor doesn't seem happy to see me. Maybe I shouldn't have come—"

"Then why did you?" I cut him off. "What, you here to laugh at me?"

Julian's face immediately turned red.

Suri didn't hesitate.

"Connor, stop being ridiculous."

Of course she took Julian's side.

My opinion of her dropped even lower.

At first, I'd been excited to wake up and find out I'd married the girl I'd crushed on for years.

Now?

She didn't seem that amazing.

So what if she was gorgeous and rich?

Did treating her own husband like he didn't matter make her feel better?

If she hated me this much, she never should've married me.

Julian kept his cool. "Suri, I actually came to invite you to my party."

Then he finally seemed to remember I was standing right there.

Not inviting me would've looked weird.

He turned to me with a polite smile.

"Connor, why don't you come too?"

I hadn't planned on it.

Then I caught the smug little challenge in his eyes.

I smiled.

"Sure. I'm Suri's husband, after all. It's only right I go with my wife."

My head was a mess, so I didn't answer her.Suri didn't push. She showed she cared without crossing the line. She'd only just woken up, so I told her to stop worrying about me and focus on the baby. She always said okay.Somehow, she still knew everything going on in my life.At first, I thought she only wanted our child to grow up with both parents. But later, I realized I hadn't been the only one overthinking our marriage. She had too. After we got married, I was constantly insecure. And because of that, I did plenty of things that got on her nerves."I always felt like we started the wrong way. Like you only ended up with me because of one mistake."You had so many amazing guys around you. I was scared one day you'd notice them and realize I wasn't anything special."One day, I finally told her what had been eating at me."Suri, the gap between us was huge. I never figured out how to deal with it. So when I asked for a divorce, it wasn't all on you. I had my own issues

I knew Suri couldn't hear me, but Meredith's words wouldn't leave my head.I needed to say it out loud."Suri, you don't want kids, right? Fine. Wake up, have the baby, and I'll raise them myself. They'll still call you Mom. You are their mother."Even after the divorce, we can stay civil. But I'm not staying single forever. Someday, your kid might call someone else Mom."I said it just to get a reaction.Truth was, I had no plans to remarry. Maybe I'd date eventually, but marriage? Never again."What about Keira? She's liked me for years, and she saved my life. She might make a decent stepmom—"Suri's finger twitched.Once.But she didn't wake up.Disappointment hit me hard."Suri, I'm serious. If you don't wake up soon, I'm really going to—"Her eyelids fluttered. This time, I knew I hadn't imagined it."Doctor!"My heart leaped as I rushed to call Nina. She was Suri's closest friend. Since the accident, she'd barely left the hospital. She hurried over with Suri's at

Julian collapsed, bawling like he'd lost his mind.Meredith looked at him and shook her head."Your family spoiled you. They never taught you right from wrong. That's why you turned out like this."Julian kept screaming.I tuned him out.My eyes stayed locked on the operating room doors, praying Suri would make it.Then the light finally went out.I shot to my feet."Quiet. The surgery's over."Meredith fell silent immediately and motioned for the bodyguards to drag Julian away. She looked at me but didn't say a word. She didn't have to.We both knew.We came from completely different worlds. We'd never been close, but we respected each other. The doctor walked out.Meredith and I stepped forward together."How is she?"He let out a slow breath."We repaired the injury. Now... it depends on whether she pulls through."He chose his words carefully.Meredith and I both knew what he meant. After a long silence, Suri was moved to a VIP room.Meredith and I walked in t

I frowned and stepped back. Before I could leave, Julian blocked me again."You told her everything, didn't you?""Told her what?" I had no clue what he meant."You told her I'd been making your life hell behind your back. That I was trying to split you two up. That I shoved you into the pool. You ran to her and snitched, didn't you?"I gave a cold laugh."You did all of that. Scared people might find out?""I knew it was you!"He screamed and lunged.I dodged on instinct. Then I saw the knife in his hand.He was trying to kill me.He'd really snapped."Connor!"Someone screamed my name. But the pain never came. When I opened my eyes...Suri was standing in front of me.The knife was buried in her chest.Blood soaked through her clothes as all the color drained from her face.Even then, she kept staring at me, checking if I was okay. She slowly lifted a hand toward my cheek. It dropped before she could reach me."Suri!"I shouted her name. But she couldn't hear

Suri's eyes turned red."You don't want the SUV. You don't want the sports car. What about a house? Company shares? Anything I own... it's yours.""I don't know what else to do."Her voice cracked."We can fight all we want. I just don't want a divorce."I didn't need a public scene, so I grabbed her arm and pulled her into the SUV.Once we started moving, she looked even paler.I sighed. Then asked awkwardly, "You okay?"Suri straightened fast and shook her head."I'm fine..."Then she rested a hand on her stomach, hope written all over her face.I went quiet.I had no idea what to say. After a while, I finally got myself together.I took a breath."Suri, you don't have to do this. I don't blame you anymore. Saving Julian still hurt like hell, but I've made peace with everything else. We were never right for each other."You never made me feel secure, but I had my own issues too. I got jealous. Suspicious. I picked fights and made plenty of mistakes."Looking back, n

No wonder I wanted to forget. No wonder my mind had buried it all. Those memories hurt that bad.My whole body shook.Suri noticed. "What's wrong?""Suri... you make me sick."I stared at her, clutching my chest, then let out a tired breath.Truth was...I made myself sick too.I closed my eyes. Then everything went black.***When I woke up, I was back in a hospital bed.Same doctor as before. She was checking me over while Suri gripped my hand. The second my eyes opened, Suri called out, "Nina, he's awake."Nina checked my eyes. "He's fine. The emotional shock made him pass out. The swelling from his old head injury is down, so he just needs rest."Suri exhaled."When did you hit your head? Why didn't you tell me?"I pulled my hand away.My stare was colder than it had been when I lost my memory.Suri seemed to realize it.Her lips tightened."Connor... you..."I cut her off."It doesn't matter. I want a divorce."She swallowed, bitterness creeping into her
