Chapter 3

Author: Nancy Hart
In the end, I had no choice but to rush back to the hospital. I even tripped and fell a couple of times because I was in a hurry.

Morgan asked the instant he saw me, "Esther, where's Caleb?"

"He wouldn't follow me to the hospital. How's my mother-in-law doing?"

Morgan turned his face away and avoided my gaze. "You should prepare yourself for the worst, Esther."

My face went as white as a sheet. I rushed into the emergency room at once.

I felt so bad as I took in Sophia's weakened state. "Mom, I'm so sorry. I couldn't find Caleb."

I could not bring myself to tell Sophia that Caleb had refused to come with me to the hospital.

"You don't have to lie to me, Esther. Caleb is my son. I know him better than anyone else does. He must be with that woman again.

"He chose to forsake me, his mother, because of that woman. What an ungrateful child!

"I knew you were a good person from the first time I met you, Esther. Caleb has been seeing that woman recently. You suffered a lot because of it. Instead of telling me, you kept it all to yourself. It's my fault that Caleb turns out to be an awful person like this."

I sobbed uncontrollably.

"Mom, it's not your fault. Please don't say that."

Sophia coughed a little. I added nervously, "Mom, you shouldn't speak anymore. Just get some rest and you'll be fine."

Sophia's eyes were bright with tears. "If I don't say it now, I may never get the chance to say it later on."

A sob caught in my throat.

Sophia directed her gaze at me. "Esther, you should take good care of yourself after I'm gone. Don't let others make you feel miserable. Get a divorce. I want you to be happy…"

After saying that, Sophia closed her eyes.

"Mom!"

I hunched over the side of the hospital bed and broke down in tears.

Sophia passed away.

Morgan stood to one side with his head hanging low. He dared not utter a word.

When morning came, I gazed at Sophia's cold, stiff body and gave Caleb a call. Still, his phone was turned off.

I clicked on Instagram since I decided to send him a message. Despite what happened, we should hold a proper funeral for Sophia. Caleb should see her one last time before we bury her remains.

Yet, before I could send my message, I saw that Lexie posted a new update on her Instagram page.

She uploaded several photos.

In the photos, Lexie sat on a chair with a cat in her arms. I could see a man's arm beside her, and I instantly recognized that it belonged to Caleb.

The caption went like this. "Bailey is so lucky to have met a father who loves him so much. We're off to watch a concert!"

Caleb even left a comment under the post. "Just watching how happy you guys are makes me happy."

I gripped my phone tightly. My heart ached so badly.

Sophia had just passed away. Meanwhile, Caleb was in the mood to bring Lexie and her cat to go and watch a concert.

In the end, I did not send Caleb any message to inform him.

I took care of matters relating to Sophia's funeral all by myself. After most of the procedures were done, I brought the urn containing Sophia's ashes back home.

I was overcome with sadness when I spotted Sophia's cup on the table. Tears streamed from my eyes.

Caleb's father passed away a long time ago. Sophia had to take on several jobs at the same time to earn enough to raise Caleb. The work was taxing, which led to her developing heart problems.

Caleb came home the next day. He asked as soon as he entered through the door, "Where's Mom?"

Sitting on the couch, I cast him an icy gaze and lifted the urn in my hands.

"Mom's here."

Caleb stared at me with barely disguised contempt.

"Esther, are you still not done with that nonsense? Just because Mom takes your side doesn't mean you can make her go along with your nonsensical act. I won't fall for it.

"Where's she hiding? Tell her to come out now." Caleb tossed the bags he was carrying onto my lap.

"See how much Lexie cares about my mom? She bought a lot of clothes for her. Yet, you, her daughter-in-law, were making her put on an act with you!"

I snickered.

Sophia was already gone. Nobody would need these clothes.

I just could not understand how someone as kind as Sophia ended up raising such a dumb son.

I picked up the bags and threw them forcefully at Caleb.

"Caleb, you believe every single word that Lexie says! Do you not have a brain of your own? Mom's dead!"

Caleb was momentarily stunned. Then, he snatched the urn from me.

"Esther, it seems you really have a few screws loose in the head. You even prepared an urn to trick me. This is completely mental!"

He lifted his arms and smashed the urn onto the floor.

I went back to the house and packed my things. After that, I moved into the dormitory provided by my workplace and started working.I was certain that I would be able to buy my own house if I just put in the effort. As for the divorce, even if Caleb refused to do it now, I could just file for divorce after we lived separately for two years. One day, my colleagues and I grabbed dinner together after work. Just as we exited the restaurant, we spotted a crowd in the distance.I had no interest in learning others' personal matters. Yet, I caught a glimpse of Lexie just then.A middle-aged woman yanked at Lexie's hair and shouted, "How dare you try to seduce my husband, you slut! I'm going to give you a good beating!"I moved a bit closer to the crowd and saw that Lexie's body was covered in bruises. Her clothes were torn too. She seemed quite miserable."This shameless wench has been seeing my husband for a few years now. She's got my husband spending more than one million dollars o

Caleb's phone slipped out of his hand and fell onto the floor. He was shaking all over. There was a look of guilt, pain, and regret on his face. Caleb had probably thought about what happened during the last few days. The night I went to Lexie's house and begged him to perform the surgery on Sophia only to hear his refusal. After that, Caleb stopped by home and shattered the urn carrying Sophia's ashes, saying that the ashes were just flour.Caleb was gripped by a sense of panic. His legs went limp, and he dropped to his knees."Mom, how could this be? Why did my mom end up dying? I was wrong, Mom! I'm sorry. I'm really sorry!"As he broke down in tears, Caleb started slapping himself nonstop.I looked at him expressionlessly. Even if Caleb managed to beat himself to death, it would not bring Sophia back to life.Lexie crouched down beside Caleb and consoled him, "Caleb, you're not at fault for what's happened. Stop blaming yourself. There's no way we can bring back the dead. So

Caleb picked up the papers from the floor and flipped through them. His face darkened when he confirmed that I was serious about getting a divorce."Fine! Let's get a divorce. I shouldn't have married you in the first place anyway, Esther."He quickly signed the papers.I took the divorce papers from him. "I'll meet you tomorrow at 9:30 am to complete the divorce procedures."As if he did not hear me, Caleb turned his eyes to Lexie. "Lexie, we'll take Bailey to the vet's. I'm sure he'll be fine. Don't worry."Lexie smiled and agreed to his suggestion. Then, she flashed me a contemptuous grin as though flaunting her victory.I could not be bothered with her cheap tricks. So, I turned around and closed the door behind me.I thought about Sophia just as the door came to a shut.Caleb was so worried about the cat's wound that he swiftly decided to take it to the veterinarian. Yet, he did not ask about Sophia, whom he had not seen for days, at all.I could almost imagine how disapp

If it were before, I would have been devastated to hear Caleb say that. Yet, I just felt like laughing now as I thought about how much of a fool he was.I did not waste time arguing with him. "I have the divorce papers ready. You just need to drop by and sign them."Without allowing him the time to respond, I hung up.The doorbell rang half an hour later. I opened the door thinking it was Caleb who had arrived. The person standing outside the door was not Caleb. Instead, it was Lexie, who was carrying her cat.She glanced at me and said mockingly, "How has it been? It feels awful losing your husband to someone else, right?"Lexie did not bother putting on an act since only the two of us were there. She raised her phone and showed me a photo."Esther, why did you think Caleb chose to marry you in the first place? It's because you look a lot like the younger me. Well, I'm back now. So, you should take the hint and quickly divorce Caleb."I took a glance at the phone screen. The

Sophia's ashes spilled onto the floor the next instant. I was shaking all over in rage.I threw my arm back and slapped Caleb hard across the face."Caleb, you bastard! How could you break the urn containing your mom's ashes? Are you not afraid of divine punishment?"Caleb was in a daze after receiving that slap. He snapped out of it a few seconds later and yelled at me furiously, "Esther Lloyd, how dare you hit me? You lunatic!"I ignored him. Crouching down, I fumbled as I tried to pick up Sophia's ashes with my hands."Mom, I'm sorry. I'm so useless. I didn't do a good job at protecting you."Caleb stared at me as though he was looking at some monster. He scoffed. "That's just flour, isn't it? Your acting skills are quite convincing."I lifted my head and glared at Caleb with red, teary eyes. "Caleb, you spilled Mom's ashes! Can you really call yourself a human?"Caleb was about to respond, but his phone rang just then. His expression changed slightly after he answered the c
