Chapter 1

Author: Salted Orange Juice
[Welcome to Roadbound.]

[This is a migration for all of humanity—and a flight with no finish line.]

[Whether you were a billionaire or a beggar, you all start equal—one vehicle, one life.]

[Your vehicle could be a plane, a tank, a taxi, a bicycle, a sports car, a fire truck, a subway train... Whatever you get, you'll automatically learn to drive it.]

[The road beneath you stretches on forever. It's your only path forward.]

[Remember—don't look back.]

[The Gray Mist is chasing you. Its speed is constant, and it consumes every living thing in its path.]

[Scavenge supplies. Upgrade your ride. Survive this deadly highway.]

A cold, synthetic voice detonated deep inside his skull. Jake Maddox's eyes snapped open.

The familiar ceiling of his bedroom was gone. In its place: a windshield.

Beyond the glass, the sky was the color of dirty ink—heavy, suffocating, pressing down like a lid.

He was in the driver's seat, both hands wrapped around a black steering wheel.

"I transmigrated?"

"Roadbound..." Jake muttered, his brain already processing the flood of information. As a modern guy who'd grown up on games and web novels, his tolerance for the absurd was higher than most.

He didn't panic. He didn't scream. He reached for his pocket.

His phone was gone.

In its place: a black handbook.

The cover was rough leather, stamped with a single countdown in blood-red numbers: [Time Until Gray Mist Arrives: 00:59:32]

This wasn't just a manual. It was a countdown to death.

Jake frowned and flipped to the first page.

[Survival Rules]

[1. Your vehicle is your safe zone. No one may enter without your permission.]

[2. Inside your vehicle, you are the absolute master. Players cannot harm you while you're inside. Items in your vehicle cannot be stolen—unless you die.]

[3. In this world, even common monsters are tough. But every kill drops rich rewards.]

[4. You must upgrade your vehicle to survive the dangers ahead.]

[5. Watch your Sanity. In this world, madness is worse than death.]

[6. 100,000 supply crates have been randomly scattered along the highway. Find them.]

[7. All data has been digitized. Mentally whisper "System" to view your status panel.]

(Note: When you summon your panel, other players can see it too. Check in private.)

Jake closed the handbook and focused on the empty space in front of him. "System."

A translucent blue hologram materialized instantly.

On the left was his personal status.

[Name: Jake Maddox]

[Race: Human]

[Status: Healthy (Mild Hunger)]

[Sanity: 100/100]

(Note: Below 30, suicidal thoughts. Below 20, auditory hallucinations. Below 10, total madness.)

[Mind: 5]

(Note: Average adult value. Higher Mind = better sanity resistance and faster recovery.)

[Physique: 5]

(Note: Composite of speed, strength, and defense.)

To the right were his vehicle stats.

[Vehicle: Civilian Class C Motorhome (Entry Model)]

[Level: Lv.1]

[Physical Defense: 20]

(Note: Barely withstands a Level 1 zombie's scratch.)

[Magic Resistance: 0]

[Weight: 3 tons]

[Storage Space: 8 cubic meters]

[Durability: 50%]

(Left front tire severely worn. Replacement recommended.)

[Fuel: 2%]

(Estimated range: 10 km)

[External Weapons: None]

[Overall Rating: A mobile iron coffin. Best to pick a nice cemetery.]

Jake's pupils contracted.

2%?

Ten kilometers of fuel?

This wasn't survival. This was a death sentence.

And then the cold mechanical voice returned, broadcasting to every player in the region with the finality of a guillotine blade.

[Region Announcement: Attention, all players in Zone C-996.]

[Your current location is the Zombie Wasteland. The Gray Mist has begun spreading. Distance to your starting point: 30 km.]

[Spread speed: 30 km/h.]

[Start your engines and flee immediately. If the Gray Mist catches you, nothing will remain.]

'One hour? Thirty kilometers an hour?'

Jake's mind raced.

If his vehicle had only 10 km of range, even if he floored it, he'd be dead in the water within ten minutes. Once he stalled, the Gray Mist would swallow him whole.

He clenched his jaw and opened the blinking [Regional Chat].

The channel was absolute chaos—panic spreading like a plague.

[HELP! Where the hell am I? I was just driving my Ferrari. Why am I in a busted van?!]

[At least you have a roof! I'm on a tricycle! I'm completely exposed to the open air!]

[Are you kidding me?! I got a scooter!]

[Can someone tell me how to read this gas gauge?! Mine's already below E!]

[Same here! System says I've got 20 km max! There's nothing out here but dirt. Where do we even get gas?!]

[This is murder! I want to go home! Please!!!]

[Anyone see a gas station?! ANYONE?!]

[Stop dreaming. This is some kind of bizarre apocalypse. You think the system will give you a full tank? It's forcing us out of our vehicles to scavenge!]

[But I can hear... things out there… growling. I'm not getting out. No way.]

Jake scanned the flood of messages. Most people were in the same boat. The system had given everyone the same cruel, desperate start: barely any fuel, forcing players to choose between risking their lives to find supply crates or getting overtaken by the Gray Mist.

This was the first filter. Round one would cull the timid, the unlucky, and the slow.

'At least I'm not on a tricycle.' Jake let out a long breath. 'Sitting here won't get me anywhere... I need to find supply crates.'

But just as he was about to turn the key, a crisp chime rang out in his mind. It was different from the system's cold voice. Clearer. More... otherworldly.

[Host soul signature detected. Binding external system...]

[Binding successful: Gold Mod Per Level (Unique)]

[Effect: Each time your vehicle gains a level, you will receive one Gold Mod. This mod can be forcibly applied to any component of your vehicle.]

[New Player Bonus Granted: Your motorhome starts at Lv.1. You may now draw your first Gold Mod.]

The first rays of the morning sunlight filtered through the bulletproof glass, casting warm golden patches across the teakwood floor. There were no zombie growls or the sound of howling wind. What woke Jake was the rich aroma of warm milk and the sizzle of eggs frying in a pan.He opened his eyes and sat up on the soft bed—for a brief moment, he almost felt like he was back in civilized society. The cabin was a comfortable 75.2°F, perfectly humid, and he'd slept until he naturally woke."Boss, you're up?"A bright, pleasant voice came from the kitchen area.Jake turned his head—and paused.Bella was busy at the induction cooktop. The cabin was warm enough that she'd dressed lightly—a white button-up shirt, clearly a size too big, its hem just barely grazing her thighs. Below that, a pair of denim shorts. As she moved, her long legs caught the morning light in a way that was almost distracting. Her slightly messy hair was tied up with a simple headband, a few loose strands frami

"After I got here, I got lucky—I ran into my college classmate. Her name was Sally Kinsman. She'd awakened a Specialization too—Reconnaissance."Bella's voice trailed off, her eyes dimming."We worked well together. I had the tank. She could scout ahead. But then... we ran into the Wolf Pack."They pretended to be survivors calling for help. Sally was soft-hearted... but they had an RPG. She covered my escape, and they..."Bella bit her lip, her fingers tightening around the beer can until her knuckles went white."That tank was all I had left. But it still wasn't enough. If you hadn't shown up, I probably would've died to that White Spike—or starved to death inside that metal coffin."Jake listened quietly. No interruptions. No cheap sympathy. In the apocalypse, stories like this played out every day."The Wolf Pack, huh." Jake's tone was flat. "I've killed a few of them already. Consider it interest on what they owe your friend."Bella's head snapped up, a flash of satisfact

Jake was lounging on the sofa, ladle in hand. He scooped up a generous portion—tender meat, soft vegetables, rich broth—and took a slow, satisfied bite."Perfect."Bella stood frozen in the doorway, utterly dumbstruck....Lamb... stew?Fresh bread?Ice-cold beer? Was she dreaming? Had the cold given her hallucinations? This was the apocalypse—people were gnawing on moldy bread out there, and this guy was eating a home-cooked stew in his RV?!"Quit gawking."Jake glanced up at her and nodded toward the empty seat across from him."Go take another shower. Clean up, then come eat. You'll need the energy for tomorrow."Bella swallowed hard, then nodded without thinking. After a quick shower and changing into her own clean clothes, she sat down on the sofa. Jake handed her a bowl and a spoon. She still looked dazed."Eat up. What, do I have to feed you?" He slid a glass of beer toward her.Snapping back to reality, Bella stared at the steaming stew in front of her. Her eyes s

Night fell. The wasteland wind turned biting and sharp once again. But beside the RV, warm light glowed in the darkness.Jake had parked on a sheltered high ground, calling it a day. The abandoned aviation parts factory Bella mentioned was still over two hundred miles away—too risky to drive at night. They'd head out tomorrow.Bella climbed back into the RV, exhausted, her toolbox dragging behind her. Every muscle ached."I'm beat..."She dropped the box with a thud and shot Jake a look of pure grievance. "Not an ounce of chivalry in you..."Jake ignored her stare. Instead, he nodded approvingly."Good efficiency."He opened the fridge, pulled out a bottle of water, cracked the seal, and held it out to her.Bella's eyes lit up. She'd been parched all afternoon—her throat felt like sandpaper."Thanks!"A warm feeling bloomed in her chest. Maybe this capitalist boss had a heart after all—actually giving his worker water. She reached out to take it.Jake pulled it back.He

Any normal vehicle—hell, even a tank—would've had to pick its way through this nightmare carefully. But Jake? He didn't slow down. He accelerated.80 km/h... 100 km/h... 120 km/h!"JAKE! THE TIRES WILL BLOW! WE'RE GONNA ROLL!" Bella screamed, her face pale as death. She gripped her seatbelt with white-knuckled desperation and squeezed her eyes shut. But the violent crash she braced for never came.CRUNCH! BOOM! KRRR—!A barrage of heavy, grinding impacts rattled the chassis—but it felt more like a steamroller running over a few pebbles.Jake's tires were indestructible—puncture-proof, bullet-proof, fire-proof. And they had constant traction—perfect grip on any terrain. No flip. No slide. No problem.Bella cracked one eye open. Her jaw nearly hit the floor. In front of them, concrete walls that would've stopped any normal vehicle dead in its tracks—wrecked cars, collapsed barriers—all of it crumbled like cheap foam before the RV's vicious alloy-spiked ram.An SUV blocking the

The sound of running water in the bathroom stopped.About ten minutes later, the frosted glass door slid open. A wave of warm, steam-laden air—scented with body wash—rolled into the cabin.Jake glanced instinctively at the rearview mirror. Then his gaze lingered. The grease-stained mechanic was gone.In her place stood a fresh-faced girl in a bathrobe. With no spare clothes to change into, Bella had wrapped herself in one of Jake's spare white robes—which was clearly a size or two too big. The sleeves were rolled up several times, revealing her pale and slender forearms. Her once-grimy hair was now clean and glossy black, hanging wetly over her shoulders, droplets still clinging to the ends. In the rising steam, her delicate features emerged—soft and elegant, the kind of face that belonged in a classical painting. Her eyes were clear and bright, the corners slightly downturned, giving her a naturally innocent look. Her skin was flushed pink from the hot water.'Not bad at all,'
