Chapter 3

Author: Scarlet Taylor
When James entered her room that night, it was almost midnight. Lynette was getting ready for bed when the attendants announced his arrival, and she had to get dressed to greet him.

Daisy wanted to do up her hair, but she waved her maid off. “No need for that.”

James brought a cold breeze into the room with him, pausing when he saw she was only wearing her nightgown with her hair down.

“Greetings, Your Majesty.” Lynette bowed.

“As you were.” James sat by the table and poured himself a cup of tea. “The queen suggested a name for the princess: Annie. Since you’re her biological mother, I thought I should ask what you think.”

Lynette lowered her gaze. “Queen Isabella is the princess’ mother. Any name she suggests would be wonderful for her.”

James’s hand tightened around the teacup. The fireplace crackled, then he said softly, putting down the cup. “It’s good that you think that. There’s one more reason I came here. Prince Charles is three years old now, so it’s time he had a teacher. The queen will personally appoint him a royal tutor.”

Lynette listened wordlessly.

James paused and then said, “I was thinking… that it’d be best if you didn’t see the child so often. The prince is young. If he knew his biological mother was someone else, it might cause problems. It’d be best for everyone involved if he only recognized one woman as his mother.”

She raised her head and looked at him directly. Her gaze was still as a silent lake under the candlelight. “Understood.”

James suddenly felt a little frustrated. He would rather her cry or beg, or weep and ask him why like she used to. Anything but the way she was now, like an obedient puppet with her strings cut.

“Do you have any complaints?” His voice went cold.

“I wouldn’t dare.”

Jame felt his temper catch in his chest. Seeing her so docile made him even more upset than when she pleaded with him in tears. “Lynette Eaves, are you acting like this because you resent me? If you are dissatisfied, how will you continue bearing the royal heirs?”

Lynette tugged at the corners of her lips, whether out of mockery or apathy none could tell. “If you want more heirs, Your Majesty, you could bring other women into your harem. I’m afraid I can’t live up to your expectations.”

“You…!” James jumped to his feet abruptly. “I swore an oath to the queen! By taking you in, I’ve already broken my word to remain loyal to her. How could I take another?!”

The moment he said that, the room fell quiet. James froze and looked at Lynette’s face. All the blood had drained from her face; she was biting down hard on her pale lips, and her eyelashes trembled with what almost looked like tears.

Only then did he realize how cruel his words had been. He had yelled at the woman who was still weak in bed from bearing him two children, emphasizing just how much he loved another.

An awkward silence hung over the room.

Lynette forced herself off the bed and onto the floor, where she kneeled before James. “Forgive me, Your Majesty. Your love with Queen Isabella will go down in legend. May you have a restful night, Your Majesty.”

She continued prostrating herself, her thin body trembling slightly in the dim light, but she did not say another word.

James looked at her figure on the floor, the frustration and inexplicable pain twisting in his chest.

He suddenly remembered how she looked when he married her three years ago. Back then, she would smile, pluck flowers from the garden, and sit next to him quietly as he worked.

Once he looked up and caught her staring at him. When their gazes met, she lowered her head hastily, her ears reddening.

When did she stop meeting his eyes?

He wanted to help her up and say something to make it up to her, but his pride as the king and his guilt toward Isabella froze him in place. In the end, he stormed away angrily… more flustered than he would dare to admit.

The door opened and then slammed shut again, bringing a wave of cold air.

Daisy rushed to Lynette’s side, helping her up as she sobbed, “Why did you do that, my lady…?”

Lynette let Daisy lay her down in bed, staring blankly at the ceiling. After a long time, tears flowed from her eyes and into her hair.

She wept soundlessly at first, her shoulders trembling. Then, broken sobs leaked from her throat, and she sobbed like an injured animal.

She yanked her covers up, biting the corners tightly to muffle her sobs. All that remained was her shaking body.

“My lady, please cry all you want. Don’t suppress it…” Daisy wept, her heart breaking for her.

After a long time, the trembling finally stopped. Lynette pushed off her covers, her face streaked with tears but eerily calm.

She looked at Daisy, who was also weeping. Lynette’s voice was hoarse, but clear. “Just this once, Daisy.”

“What?”

“I will only cry this once.” She raised her hand and rubbed the tear marks off her face. Her fingers were cold. “I will never cry again.”

She looked past Daisy into the void, repeating for Daisy’s ears or her own.

“It isn’t worth it.

“He isn’t worth it. Not at all.”

News of Lynette’s return to the palace was like a stone falling into a lake, casting ripples everywhere. The court and palace were in an uproar. However, James silenced all the protests with an iron fist. He said that Queen Lynette had no choice but to fake her death because villains were after her life. Now that the truth had come to light, she rightfully returned to the palace. No one dared to object. The former queen Isabella was still imprisoned, and all the maids involved in that incident had been put to death. No one wanted to be next. Lynette returned to her former chambers. Everything was as she had left it, except there were now traces of the two children as well. She saw Charles's toy horse and Lucille’s rattle scattered on the floor. The first day after she came back, Charles hid behind the nanny, looking at her timidly.“Charles,” James said gently, crouching down to look at him. “This is your mother.”Charles blinked and then suddenly ran into her arms. “Mo

The crown prince's investiture ceremony was set for autumn. That day, nobles and commoners alike gathered to witness and celebrate the occasion. Three-year-old Charles wore the crown prince's yellow cloak, holding James's hand as he took the stairs up to the main hall. The boy was young, but his steps were steady. There was a maturity beyond his age in his eyes. James looked at his son and suddenly thought of Lynette. Charles's eyes really resembled hers. After the ceremony was the royal banquet, filled with song, dance, and delicacies. James sat on his throne, watching the festivities with a hollow heart. This time last year, Lynette was still sitting at the concubines’ table, quietly enjoying the performances. He had not spared her a second glance that time, but now when his eyes sought her out, she was nowhere to be found. Three days after the investiture ceremony, Lynette wrote a letter to the palace. It only had one sentence. “Lady Lynette Eaves wishes to meet Hi

“And then?”“And then I want Charles to become the crown prince, acknowledged by all.”Lynette looked at Jonathan. “Father, this kingdom will one day belong to my son, to our family. If I don't fight for it, are we supposed to just hand it to the remnants of the Fairfax family? Or to another concubine who may show up in the future?”Jonathan stiffened. “So when you asked me if I was sure, I said yes. I'm sure.” Lynette was calm as ever. “Taking a step back would send me into a bottomless abyss. But if I take a step forward, I may still open up a path.”“And will that path lead to the palace?”“It'll lead wherever I want it to,” Lynette smirked. “What did it matter if I stayed within the palace or outside it? As long as I have Charles and the Eaves family, I'd be able to live happily wherever I want.”She walked up to her father and bent down to hold his hands. “Father, I know you're worried about me. But please believe me — this time, I won't be anyone's puppet.”Jonathan look

When the news of the queen's deposition reached the mansion on the outskirts, Lynette was sunbathing in the courtyard. Daisy rushed in with the letter, her expression filled with joy. “My lady, news from the palace — His Majesty has deposed the queen! Isabella Fairfax has been stripped of all her titles and imprisoned!”Lynette looked at her but did not put down her book. “I see.”Daisy blinked. “Aren't you happy?”“I am,” Lynette said calmly. “Why wouldn't I be?”Despite her words, there was no joy in her expression. Daisy said hesitantly, “My lady, this is great news. The prince and princess can officially call you their mother now. After things die down a little, maybe you could…”“I could do what?” Lynette interrupted her. “Go back to the palace? Become his concubine again?”Daisy was lost for words. Lynette closed the book and looked at the lingering snow on a withered branch. “Daisy, do you think I've won?”“Of course you have!” Daisy said excitedly. “Isabella is beh

Three days later, Jonathan Eaves finally “recovered” enough to visit the palace. James summoned him to his study. It had only been half a month since they last met, but there was a lot more white in Jonathan’s hair. His eyes were clearly bloodshot, and his face was gaunt. James's guilt deepened when he looked at Jonathan. “My condolences, Preceptor.” He personally poured Jonathan a cup of tea. Jonathan thanked him but did not drink. “Why did you summon me to the palace, Your Majesty?”James was silent for a moment before saying, “I've posthumously made Lynette queen and given her a state funeral. Did you hear?”“I did.” Jonathan’s voice was calm. “I thank you on my daughter's behalf.”“I…” James paused. “I want to know more about her. What was she like before… she entered the palace?”Jonathan looked at him, his gaze complicated. “What do you wish to hear, Your Majesty?”“Anything would do,” James said softly. “What she liked, what she disliked, her hobbies… I want to know

  • Gone in the Moonlight   Chapter 15

James started to dream of Lynette. He dreamed of the day she first entered the palace, wearing pale blue clothes and looking up at the plum blossoms. She looked around when she heard his footsteps and smiled at him, a faint dimple in her left cheek. Sometimes he dreamed of her when she was pregnant, caressing her belly as she read a book by the window. The sunlight shone on her, gentle and serene. He dreamed of her kneeling in the snow, her body as thin and fragile as a piece of paper. Most of all, he dreamed of the fire in the west tower. In his dreams, he stood outside the burning building and watched it collapse in flames. Lynette stood at the window, staring at him quietly. She did not cry or shout; she just looked at him. He wanted to run in and save her, but it felt like his legs were nailed to the ground. He could not move. He could only watch as she was swallowed by the flames. Then he would wake up in a cold sweat, his chest hurting so hard he could barely brea
