Chapter 4

Author: Scarlet Taylor
Before dawn the next day, Isabella’s head maid knocked on Lynette’s door. She said that King James looked angry when he left Lynette’s room the night before, so Lynette must have angered him. In that case, the queen wanted to teach the concubine some discipline.

The morning air was sharp as knives. There was still snow on the floor.

When Lynette stepped into the courtyard outside Isabella’s chambers, the queen was wrapped in fox fur and holding a hand warmer as she waited.

“Do you know what you did wrong?” Isabella asked slowly. There were a few other low-ranking concubines and maids with her.

“Lady Eaves, you spoke back to the king last night and angered him. Is that true?” Isabella sat on her chair, checking her nails.

Lynette knelt. “I wouldn’t dare.”

“You wouldn’t dare?” Isabella scoffed. “Why did I hear that His Majesty looked quite upset when he left your room last night? As his concubine, you should relieve his worries, not add to them. How should you be punished?”

“I don’t know, Your Majesty. Please enlighten me.”

“You don’t know? I’d say you know too much!” Isabella’s voice rose suddenly. “His Majesty graced you with his presence last night, but you betrayed his favor by angering him! Is that how your family raised you? What happened to your noble upbringing?!”

Lynette lowered her head, her hands clenching into fists.

“Looks like you refuse to admit fault,” Isabella smirked. “Fine, since you’re so disobedient, I’ll discipline you myself. Stay kneeling here and recite the entire palace rulebook. You can rise when you’re done memorizing the whole thing. Now, everyone will see what happens to those who disrespect the king and the queen!”

It was early winter, with a bone-chillingly cold morning wind.

The courtyard was vast. Though the passing maids did not dare to look at her directly, they could all see the concubine kneeling on the marble floor.

Lynette kept her back straight as she recited the rules. Her knees went numb from the pain, her lips turned purple from the cold, but she never bent her back.

One hour passed, then two…

Isabella listened with interest at first, but her expression began to darken when she realized Lynette could recite every word with ease. Her rage rose when she saw the other lower-ranking concubines or attendants looking at Lynette with sympathy as they walked past.

“Enough!” Isabella interrupted with a bark. “You memorized everything well, but you clearly haven’t taken the lessons to heart. Your father is the Preceptor, beloved by all civilized scholars, so how could he have raised such an uncivilized daughter? He’s also at fault for raising a daughter who can’t even read the room or respect the king!”

Lynette finally raised her lowered gaze.

Her father was her bottom line. She could tolerate any slander to her name, but she would not let anyone tarnish her father’s innocence, especially with such a laughable accusation!

She stared straight at Isabella, her voice hoarse from the cold and lack of water. Even so, her tone was stern.

“I can accept it when you discipline me, Your Majesty. However, my father has been nothing but loyal to the kingdom, raising the scholars and bringing peace to the court. I won’t acknowledge what you just said, or it would be a blemish to His Majesty’s relationship with his loyal ministers!”

“How dare you talk back to me!” Isabella flew into a rage, running into the courtyard and slapping Lynette.

Smack! The loud sound echoed through the courtyard.

Lynette’s face was turned to the side from the force of the strike. Her fair cheek began to swell with red marks.

She slowly turned back to look at Isabella. Blood trickled from the corner of her mouth, but she held the queen’s gaze.

“So this is the so-called loyal preceptor’s daughter! What a sharp tongue you have!” Isabella was breathing hard from her fury. “Servants, take her away and—”

News of Lynette’s return to the palace was like a stone falling into a lake, casting ripples everywhere. The court and palace were in an uproar. However, James silenced all the protests with an iron fist. He said that Queen Lynette had no choice but to fake her death because villains were after her life. Now that the truth had come to light, she rightfully returned to the palace. No one dared to object. The former queen Isabella was still imprisoned, and all the maids involved in that incident had been put to death. No one wanted to be next. Lynette returned to her former chambers. Everything was as she had left it, except there were now traces of the two children as well. She saw Charles's toy horse and Lucille’s rattle scattered on the floor. The first day after she came back, Charles hid behind the nanny, looking at her timidly.“Charles,” James said gently, crouching down to look at him. “This is your mother.”Charles blinked and then suddenly ran into her arms. “Mo

The crown prince's investiture ceremony was set for autumn. That day, nobles and commoners alike gathered to witness and celebrate the occasion. Three-year-old Charles wore the crown prince's yellow cloak, holding James's hand as he took the stairs up to the main hall. The boy was young, but his steps were steady. There was a maturity beyond his age in his eyes. James looked at his son and suddenly thought of Lynette. Charles's eyes really resembled hers. After the ceremony was the royal banquet, filled with song, dance, and delicacies. James sat on his throne, watching the festivities with a hollow heart. This time last year, Lynette was still sitting at the concubines’ table, quietly enjoying the performances. He had not spared her a second glance that time, but now when his eyes sought her out, she was nowhere to be found. Three days after the investiture ceremony, Lynette wrote a letter to the palace. It only had one sentence. “Lady Lynette Eaves wishes to meet Hi

“And then?”“And then I want Charles to become the crown prince, acknowledged by all.”Lynette looked at Jonathan. “Father, this kingdom will one day belong to my son, to our family. If I don't fight for it, are we supposed to just hand it to the remnants of the Fairfax family? Or to another concubine who may show up in the future?”Jonathan stiffened. “So when you asked me if I was sure, I said yes. I'm sure.” Lynette was calm as ever. “Taking a step back would send me into a bottomless abyss. But if I take a step forward, I may still open up a path.”“And will that path lead to the palace?”“It'll lead wherever I want it to,” Lynette smirked. “What did it matter if I stayed within the palace or outside it? As long as I have Charles and the Eaves family, I'd be able to live happily wherever I want.”She walked up to her father and bent down to hold his hands. “Father, I know you're worried about me. But please believe me — this time, I won't be anyone's puppet.”Jonathan look

When the news of the queen's deposition reached the mansion on the outskirts, Lynette was sunbathing in the courtyard. Daisy rushed in with the letter, her expression filled with joy. “My lady, news from the palace — His Majesty has deposed the queen! Isabella Fairfax has been stripped of all her titles and imprisoned!”Lynette looked at her but did not put down her book. “I see.”Daisy blinked. “Aren't you happy?”“I am,” Lynette said calmly. “Why wouldn't I be?”Despite her words, there was no joy in her expression. Daisy said hesitantly, “My lady, this is great news. The prince and princess can officially call you their mother now. After things die down a little, maybe you could…”“I could do what?” Lynette interrupted her. “Go back to the palace? Become his concubine again?”Daisy was lost for words. Lynette closed the book and looked at the lingering snow on a withered branch. “Daisy, do you think I've won?”“Of course you have!” Daisy said excitedly. “Isabella is beh

Three days later, Jonathan Eaves finally “recovered” enough to visit the palace. James summoned him to his study. It had only been half a month since they last met, but there was a lot more white in Jonathan’s hair. His eyes were clearly bloodshot, and his face was gaunt. James's guilt deepened when he looked at Jonathan. “My condolences, Preceptor.” He personally poured Jonathan a cup of tea. Jonathan thanked him but did not drink. “Why did you summon me to the palace, Your Majesty?”James was silent for a moment before saying, “I've posthumously made Lynette queen and given her a state funeral. Did you hear?”“I did.” Jonathan’s voice was calm. “I thank you on my daughter's behalf.”“I…” James paused. “I want to know more about her. What was she like before… she entered the palace?”Jonathan looked at him, his gaze complicated. “What do you wish to hear, Your Majesty?”“Anything would do,” James said softly. “What she liked, what she disliked, her hobbies… I want to know

  • Gone in the Moonlight   Chapter 15

James started to dream of Lynette. He dreamed of the day she first entered the palace, wearing pale blue clothes and looking up at the plum blossoms. She looked around when she heard his footsteps and smiled at him, a faint dimple in her left cheek. Sometimes he dreamed of her when she was pregnant, caressing her belly as she read a book by the window. The sunlight shone on her, gentle and serene. He dreamed of her kneeling in the snow, her body as thin and fragile as a piece of paper. Most of all, he dreamed of the fire in the west tower. In his dreams, he stood outside the burning building and watched it collapse in flames. Lynette stood at the window, staring at him quietly. She did not cry or shout; she just looked at him. He wanted to run in and save her, but it felt like his legs were nailed to the ground. He could not move. He could only watch as she was swallowed by the flames. Then he would wake up in a cold sweat, his chest hurting so hard he could barely brea
