ANNALISE
"Well Well, look who we have here." That was the first thing I heard when I stepped into the hallway. My heart leapt in my chest as I felt their eyes turn to follow me. They always did. At first, it was because I was new. That excuse had expired weeks ago now because everyone at school had learnt the same new unspoken rule. Watch what happens when Annalise walks in or better said… Who? But I had learnt to ignore them, just as I did as I walked to my classroom. The moment I stepped through the doors, I heard him before I saw him. My bully. Knox Callahan. The reason why the whole school just seems to have it out for me. He was leaning against the locker just close to mine, flanked by his friends. "Tic-tac? Hope she's not a clock today?" A few snickers rippled through the classroom at his jest of me, right on cue. My eyes scanned him. Knox was all broad shoulders, lazy smirk, eyes that already knew exactly what he was about to do before he did it. And no brain, most importantly—because if he had one he wouldn't be making fun of me for something beyond my control. I had Tourette's syndrome you see, and Knox never gave up on an opportunity to terrorise me. He was good at waiting. Always waiting. My fingers curled at my sides. I hated him. The realisation hit me when I took a deep breath to help calm my racing heart. 'Don't look. Don't react. Don't give them anything' that's what I told myself. It almost worked. "You're quiet today tic-y," Knox pressed as I adjusted the strap of my school bag. My spine straightened. And I kept walking towards him with my eyes trained forward. "Oh, she's coming," he teased. And just as I pulled up close to him, he stepped in my way and covered my locker. I exhaled sharply, “Move.” But that only made his smile widen. "Or what?" He pushed off the lockers, closing the space between us in two slow steps. I hated that he was close enough that I could smell his woodsy cologne, close enough to get under my skin. "For someone who hates attention," he murmured, voice low, "you sure know how to put on a show." My heart slammed once and hard against my rib cage; traitorous organ. "I said… Move." For a second, just one nanosecond, I saw something flicker in his dark eyes. Then it was gone as quickly as I saw it and replaced by that same cruel amusement. He shrugged in surrender. "Fine." Knox stepped aside. But not before his large shoulder clipped mine on the way past, hard enough to shove me into the classroom lockers. A gasp rippled from my mouth. My body slammed against the metal of the lockers with a loud sound. Pain rushed through me at the impact. Laughter followed from both him, his friends, my classmates and the people standing around the hallway who had slowed down in order to watch. This classroom had a way of turning into a drama stage whenever he decided to open his mouth and cruelly pick on me. A few pulled out their phones to record. And just like that, the show had started. "Aww, tic-tac might cry," he cooed. His voice was purposefully cute. He always did that. And I detested the way my heart slammed against my chest when he did. Rage boiled my blood. Words rushed up my throat. But I swallowed it down. The pain. The anger. The humiliation. The very real urge to swing at his perfect face was buried deep inside of me. My chin was simply tilted, just enough to meet his gaze and look him dead in the eye. "Stupid." He only kept laughing. My chest constricted, but I forced myself to turn away from him while tears gathered around my eyes. When I opened my locker, my romance novels instantly tumbled out of the locker. He was quick with his hands, bracing the three paperbacks before they fell. Slowly, I turned to stare at him because pretending he didn't exist had never once saved my unfortunate ass. "Careful, sweetheart," he whispered as he pushed them back into the compartment. His voice wafted into my ears and slid over me—low, amused, and far too close. "Take a step back," I hissed even though my heart was hammering in my chest. He crossed his arms, leaning forward with that stupid smirk sitting on his face. Perhaps it even lived there. Didn't he ever get tired of this shit? Calling me out on my involuntary tics? "Go away," I murmured. His brows lifted. "You aren't getting rid of me until you go tick tick like my grandfather's clock." Anger simmered in my belly. "Stop it," I glared at him. "Ohhhhhhh," he drawled with a shit eating grin. "Tic-tac's got some balls!" The sound of his friend's laughter grated on my nerves more than it actually should. But I focused on the books I was putting away in my locker rather than on him because my brain convinced me that he was not worth my time at all. Yet he wouldn't let me be. His voice pestered me in the background while my hands shook with an incoming tic. I prayed desperately it wasn't one because they would laugh at me to stupor. Suddenly, my head fell to the side. I looked up to see Knox who had pushed it a little bit hard with his fingers. "Answer me, stupid bitch!" His irritated voice jarred me to reality. "Fuck off man!" I screamed. My shoulder twitched. ‘Oh no,’ I thought, ‘please not a tic.’ But it was. My shoulders wouldn't stop trembling even as my eyes followed in the twitching. His eyes widened in mock surprise. "There, she's bringing it on," he pointed excitedly at me with a wide smile. My mouth opened to speak. But I couldn't. Not because I had no words. But because the small quick movements that hit me stole my breath away instantly. The sound of their laughter in the background as I struggled to keep a tight grip on the reins irked me even more. Words flew out against my will as my head tilted again and again to the side. Words I had no control over. Their laughter made it worse. "Pussy!" Knox's face fell instantly. My eyes widened. I hadn't meant it. It was just my new tic. But the look on Knox's face as he straightened told me otherwise. "What did you call me?" He demanded, coming closer, cornering me. "Screw me..." Another tic. His lips curved. "The clock is begging for a fuck!" He threw his head back and laughed. Tears burned my eyes. "Fuck you!" I yelled. Then I turned away and began to leave just as another bout of tics hit me. "Shaking like an electric fish. Electrocuted specimens much?" He spat out. My feet froze. I turned to him and forced a smile onto my lips as I lifted my brows. "And you?” I said calmly “still coming to school when you can't read? Aww, that's a really brave thing to do." His friends went quiet. The hallway did too. Knox pushed off the locker and took a step toward me with a menacing stare. "Watch your mouth tic-tac." "Same way I watched the match last Friday, I suppose?" I added with raised brows. My voice remained flat. His jaw fell. "You couldn't watch the goal, so I figured one of us had to pay attention." The laughter that rippled through the quiet space wasn't for him this time. It was at him. His jaw tightened. Something shifted in his eyes and I noticed that it was laced with anger. Knox moved fast. His hands were closing around my throat before I could realize anything. My gaze rounded. "Say that again," he demanded, not squeezing, just gripping. But the pressure was just enough to make my heart pound against my ribs. I opened my mouth, ready to hurl insults straight to his face. But before the first word could leave my lips, he bent down and catching me off guard. His lips had almost crashed with mine when an authoritative voice from behind called out. “Mister Callahan”ANNALISEA dry scoff left my lips."Dream on, I was thinking."His brows raised."About what?""The next problem," I said.He looked at me for a moment. Then, “If you say so.” He nodded slowly and looked right back at the paper.I picked up my pen.Knox had been reaching for it too and our fingers brushed against each other in the space that grew tense. My heart jumped. He didn't withdraw his hand, and neither did I as we both just stared at each other with our breaths growing quicker with each passing second.I swallowed hard. The heat that rushed through my boy when the pad of his right thumb just began to deliberately caress my palms was rather epic to feel.My toes curled.“Annalise,” he said my name for the first time today in a voice that made my pussy to throbbing down below.“Yes?” I whispered back in a soft voice that sounded as if I was in a trance, entrapped by his eyes.I wasn't sure which one of us moved first. I wasn't even sure either of us moved at all. But the space b
ANNALISEThe moment we arrived home, I had hardly even stepped out of the car when Knox spoke behind me in a loud voice, teasing even.“Meet me at the study in ten, or both of us get detention tomorrow.”My head whipped towards him.“Fuck you,” I hissed. He grinned.“I love you too, step sis.”“You’re impossible,” I mumbled, rolling my eyes in frustration.I turned away from him, went into the house and up the stairs with rage boiling over inside of my belly. He always found a way to infuriate me no matter how much I noticed and tried to avoid his rude ass.My shoulders twitched in a tic that made me to stop for a moment. And after it was over, I resuned walking straight to my bedroom door. The moment the door closed behind my tired ass, I collapsed onto the soft mattress with a deep sigh.“I've missed you,” I whispered to the mattress, kissing the polkadot sheets that were cold to the touch. My phone buzzed.I knew it was Knox even before I took it out of my bag and checked out the I
ANNALISE Lunch time wasn't any different because I saw my tormentor at the cafeteria though I had chosen to sit down at the far end of a table in the corner of the dining hall.He walked up to me and dropped his tray directly across from me like the entire cafeteria was empty and this was his only option.I looked up. "There are maybe two hundred seats in this room.""I know." He sat down. "I like this one in particular."Heat rushed into my cheeks at the look in his eyes which scanned me intensely from head to toe.I swallowed hard."I'm sitting here.""I can see that." He picked up his fork. My shoulder twitched twice. "Your tic's showing, by the way, Tic-tac,” he pointed out.I set my jaw. "Your intelligence clearly is not. And don't call me that."“I will call you whatever I want, Miss goody two shoes.”He bit back a grin
ANNALISE The next day at school was a total masterclass in pretending. I walked the busy hallways like nothing had even happened, like nothing had changed over the time between Knox and I. If it had, I refused to acknowledge it because what one didn't know always found it hard to harm them.It wasn't easy. But, I had spent an entire year before now learning how to keep my face still and cold around Knox Mercer, so I told myself that this was not going to be different in any way because it was still the same school, the same hallways and the same boy who thought that the entire world owed him a loud standing ovation.Well, maybe today would be different, and he would leave me alone after last night shenanigans.Guess who was wrong?Me.I spotted him across the quad during the morning break where he was leaning against the wall with his arms crossed. He was flanked on all side by those his rubbish team mate friends. And the moment his dark eyes found mine, he straightened up just sli
KNOX The bet was simple. It was stupid wager with one of the guys that I could get myself a tutor without asking for one. But it wasn't the real reason I had agreed. The real reason I did was because it was a chance to be near Annalise and rile her up. I had told myself it was the perfect ammunition for me to bring more torment to Annalise. I had picked the subject I was actually strongest in and tanked it deliberately, simple as that. And I knew the teacher would be quick to blame it on my sports and look around the classroom for the obvious candidate as tutor. I had already known who he would eventually land on.Annalise—top of the class with perfect scores and a spine like rod, coupled with a mouth that never knew when to actually quit. Not that I minded. So, when he had called us both aside after the display I put up for him to see in that corridor, I was not even surprised at all.It was my expectation.I knew exactly what he would say after handing out the test scripts beca
KNOXMy dick was hard as fuck.I remained seated, my butt planted firmly on the seat even after my stepsister had swiftly fled the tutoring session to her bedroom before it was fully over.I just sat there in the study chair and stared at the empty seat across from me where she had been just thirty seconds earlier. She had been gone before I could say anything. Well, not that I had anything in particular to say. My eyes were still fixed on her empty seat when I realized that the rizz game between us just got a lot more dangerous now that my prey and I would both share a roof. And presently, I was not even sure that I wanted to win anymore. The textbook she had slammed shut earlier was still sitting on the desk with her fancy pink pen was still uncapped beside it.I reached over and capped it.Then I leaned back and dragged a hand through my messy hair.Footsteps on the stairs, two sets, reached me alongside my father's voice and her mother's which just drifted up from the entrance
ANNALISE“You must be very silly!” I cried out, my eyes widening so much they nearly popped out of their sockets. His head fell back as he burst into laughter. There was absolutely nothing amusing about this.“Don’t act so shocked, sister,” he teased, coming closer.“Step-sister,” I corrected almos
ANNALISE The sound of the bedroom door swinging open made me stop halfway. My hands stilled over the edge of my dress which I had been lifting over my head. I spun around from the mirror to find a smirking Knox standing there. "Knox!" I yelled while yanking the hem of my dress down on instinct.
ANNALISE I pushed him away from me so hard and didn’t get to watch him fall as I turned to see that Mr. Dane was standing ten feet away. He kind of looked tired of the sight in the way teachers always looked when they had stopped being surprised by anything. "Step back," he ordered Knox. Knox ob
ANNALISE My brows lifted in disgust at the jinx. "I asked first," he snapped at me with furrowed brows. A dry scoff left my lips. My new step father…Knox's father… stared between both of us with confused eyes. "How do you two know each other?" he asked, looking between us. Knox didn’t hesitat
