Evelyn Williams spent three years pretending to be nobody. She married Richard Valentine out of love, hiding her identity as the sole heir to Williams Global, the most powerful corporation in London. For three years, she endured his coldness, his mother's cruelty, and his blind devotion to another woman named Tonia. She watched Tonia steal her ideas, her designs, and her credit, while Richard never looked at her twice. But when Evelyn discovered that her own secret project had been handed to Tonia as a gift, something inside her went quiet. She dropped her wedding ring on his desk and walked away. Richard let her go without a fight, certain she would crawl back within a week. He was wrong. Two weeks later, Evelyn Williams stood before three hundred of London's most powerful people and was introduced as the heir to a fifty-billion-pound empire. Richard's glass shattered on the floor. Now, the wife he ignored is the woman who controls his company's future. The woman he dismissed holds his fate in her hands. And the woman he never loved is the only one who can save him from the enemy he never saw coming. But Evelyn is done saving Richard Valentine. Or is she?

CHAPTER 1: THREE YEARS TOO LONG

Evelyn's POV

“Here comes the beauty with a brain…with standing ovation, join me to welcome this elegant and gorgeous woman. Who has an outstanding skill that no one can match”. The gala host exclaimed.

The woman walking up to the stage was wearing my smile, accepting my award, and holding my husband's hand.

I sat on the edge of our empty bed, watching the live stream on my phone. The company gala glittered with champagne and chandeliers, and at the center of it all stood Tonia, her red dress catching the light as Richard placed a crystal trophy in her hands.

"For her extraordinary vision on Project Aurora," Richard said into the microphone, his voice smooth and certain. "Tonia has single-handedly redefined what Valentine Industries can achieve."

The audience clapped. Tonia pressed a hand to her chest like she could not believe her own brilliance. Richard smiled at her…A real smile. The kind he had never once given me in three years.

My stomach turned, not from jealousy. From the truth.

Project Aurora was mine. Every line of code, every design blueprint, every strategic projection. I built it over six sleepless months, submitted it under the alias "V. Sterling" because I knew Richard would never take anything seriously if it came from his invisible wife. And now Tonia held the trophy for my work, and my husband looked at her like she was the sun.

My phone buzzed. A message from Tonia herself.

"Watching the stream? You should see how proud Richard looks right now. He told me I am the most talented woman he has ever known. Sweet, isn't it not? Do not worry, I will take good care of him."

I read it twice. Then I set the phone down.

Three years. I gave this marriage three years.

I remembered the promise I made to my father. "If he does not love you in three years, you come home. No arguments." I had laughed then, so sure that Richard would eventually see me. Eventually turned around and noticed that his wife was standing right there, waiting.

He never turned around, not once.

I picked up the phone and called him. It rang five times before he answered, and I could hear the noise of the gala behind him.

"What is it?" His voice was flat, distracted.

"Come to the courthouse tomorrow morning. Nine o'clock."

A pause. "What are you talking about?"

"I want a divorce, Richard."

Silence. Then a short, cold laugh. "Is this about the gala? I told you it was a company event. You had no reason to attend."

"This is not about the gala."

"Then what is it about? I am busy, Evelyn. Can we discuss this later?"

"There is nothing to discuss. Nine o'clock. Courthouse. Bring your identification."

"You are being ridiculous." His voice hardened. "If this is some attempt to get my attention, congratulations. You have it. Now stop this nonsense and go to sleep."

"Richard." I kept my voice steady. "I am not asking. I am telling you. Our marriage is over."

He went quiet. In the background, I heard Tonia laugh at something, bright and careless.

"Fine," he said at last. "If you want to play this game, I will be there. But do not come crying to me when you realize what you are giving up."

He hung up.

I stood slowly and walked to the window. London stretched beneath me, glittering and cold. For three years I had watched this city from this window, alone, waiting for a man who never came home. Richard kept a penthouse across town. He said it was closer to the office. I knew it was closer to Tonia.

His mother, Sylvia, called me "the charity case" behind my back. His sister, Tina, never bothered hiding her disgust. I cooked their meals, cleaned their messes, smiled through their insults, and never said a word because I loved him. Because I believed that love was patient and love was enough.

It was not enough. It was never going to be enough.

I walked to my dresser and opened the bottom drawer. Beneath folded scarves sat a second phone, sleek and black, untouched for three years. I powered it on. The screen glowed with seventeen unread messages and four missed calls, all from the same contact: Anthony.

I dialed.

He answered on the first ring.

"Evelyn." My brother's voice was tight, careful, like a man holding his breath. "Tell me this is not a pocket dial."

"It is not a pocket dial."

"Are you..." He stopped. Started again. "Are you ready?"

I looked around the apartment one last time. The white walls. The empty closet where Richard's clothes never hung. The kitchen where I cooked meals no one came home to eat.

"Yes," I said. "Tell Father I am coming home. And Anthony... prepare my office. I have been away long enough."

He let out a breath that sounded like three years of worry releasing all at once. "The car will be there in twenty minutes. And Evelyn?"

"Yes?"

"Welcome back."

I ended the call and placed both phones on the table. Beside them, I set my wedding ring. The diamond caught the light, beautiful and worthless.

Three years of loving Richard Valentine had cost me everything. My dignity. My identity. My pride.

But starting tomorrow, Evelyn Williams would no longer be a ghost in someone else's life.

I turned off the lights, sat in the dark, and waited. And for the first time in three years, I was not waiting for Richard.

I was waiting for myself.
