Anastasia

The two pink lines on the pregnancy test strip stared back at me as I held it with trembling hands.

For a moment, I just knelt there, staring at them, unable to breathe properly, afraid that if I blinked too hard they would disappear like an illusion.

I was pregnant, I couldn’t believe this.

A shaky laugh escaped my lips as I stared at the pregnancy strip in my hand. My eyes burned almost instantly, tears gathering as I pressed a hand against my mouth.

“Oh my God…”

I looked down at my stomach which was still flat beneath my dress, and something warm bloomed inside my chest. Happiness.

For three years, I had dreamed of this moment, the moment when I finally got to prove that I was capable of carrying babies in my womb.

Brandon never pressured me about children. If anything, he always told me we had time, that we were still young, that he already had everything he needed because he had me.

And I believed him.

I smiled through watery eyes and hugged the test strip to my chest before shaking my head at myself.

I needed to tell him.

I couldn’t wait to see the look of satisfaction on his face when he finally learnt we would be having a baby.

Brandon would be so happy.

The thought alone sent excitement rushing through me.

With the happiness still blooming inside my chest, I lifted myself from the bathroom floor and hurried into the walk-in closet. I changed quickly, my movements clumsy from excitement as I picked out a cream-colored dress Brandon once told me made me look “too beautiful for human consumption.”

The memory made a smile to plaster on my lips.

God, I couldn’t wait to tell him.

After brushing my hair and grabbing my purse, I glanced at myself one last time in the mirror.

Mrs. Anastasia Moretti.

Sometimes, even now, the title still felt surreal.

Brandon Moretti and I met during my final year in college. We had bumped into each other at the administrative office in school. I still remembered the way he looked at me during our first meeting, as if I was the only woman in the world.

Back then, I knew who he was. The illegitimate son of the powerful Moretti family.

The Morettis practically ruled the business world in this country. Wealth, influence, power, they had it all on a platter. But despite being a Moretti, Brandon had always stood slightly outside the circle because of his birth.

Still, he never acted bitter about it.

He was warm and affectionate, everything Damien Moretti wasn’t.

Even thinking about Damien made me tense slightly.

The legitimate heir of the Moretti empire.

Always wearing a cold and ruthless appearance.

During the three years I had been married to Brandon, Damien had never said a word to me. The man barely acknowledged anyone’s existence unless business was involved.

Thankfully, Brandon was nothing like him. And our marriage had been blissful.

At least… I thought it had been.

Of course, not everything was perfect. My mother-in-law made sure of that.

The woman hated me for reasons I still didn’t fully understand.

She made life difficult for me, especially when it came to children.

“You’ve been married for years and still nothing,” she liked to say. “What kind of woman can’t even give her husband an heir?”

I had cried over those words a lot of times in the past.

But now…

I placed a hand gently over my stomach as a smile spread across my cheeks.

Now everything was about change. I couldn’t help but wonder how she would react knowing that I was finally carrying a child.

I slapped myself back to reality, reminding myself that I had work to do.

After glancing at my reflection in the mirror one last time, I grabbed my keys and hurried downstairs.

The morning sun was already peaking through the clouds, painting the driveway in gold.

The entire drive to Black Holdings felt unreal.

I had practically handed Brandon control of the company to Brandon after our marriage. Brandon was brilliant with business, and my father adored him, so I trusted him to take care of the company.

I smiled to myself at the thought.

Brandon was probably buried in paperwork right now, completely unsuspecting.

Maybe I should surprise him dramatically.

Maybe I should…

My thought was cut off the moment I pulled into the company parking lot and my smile faltered.

Brandon’s car rolled out of the underground garage at an unusual speed.

My brows furrowed, that was strange.

He was supposed to have a board meeting today.

I instinctively reached for my phone to call him, but paused when I noticed how tense he looked through the windshield.

He looked… rushed.

I couldn’t help but wonder what was up with him.

I lowered my phone slowly, a strange feeling crept into my chest.

Without fully understanding why, I started my engine again and followed him, even though I could not understand why.

His car moved farther away from the business district and toward the quieter, wealthier side of town.

The deeper we drove into the residential area, the more uneasy I became.

Finally, Brandon pulled up in front of a luxurious townhouse tucked behind tall iron gates.

I slowed my car and parked several houses away.

Confusion twisted inside me as I watched Brandon step out of the car, then he walked over to the back seat and opened it.

I watched as he started pulling some items from the backseat.

My heart was beating speedily now, especially as I recognised the items to be baby items.

My breath caught throat and I froze in my seat.

No, no, no.

My fingers tightened around the steering wheel as my mind struggled to process what I was seeing.

Maybe…

Maybe it was for someone else.

Maybe a coworker.

Maybe a charity donation.

Maybe…

I swallowed hard.

My chest suddenly began to hurt.

Brandon gathered the bags carefully before walking toward the house.

From the way he walked, he was evident that he had been here before, actually, he came here frequently.

The unease inside me turned violent.

I got out of the car quietly.

My heart beat violently inside my chest as I walked towards the house, retracing every step that my husband had taken.

The front door hadn’t fully closed behind him, so I slipped inside silently.

The house was beautiful and warm, had all the requirements to make it a home.

My stomach twisted.

I moved carefully and hid behind a pillar that gave me enough cover while still providing room for me to see what was going on.

This isn’t what you think, Anastasia.

You’re overreacting.

Brandon loves you.

He would never…

I tried to assure myself, but my thoughts were interrupted as a soft laughter drifted from upstairs.

My entire body stiffened at once.

Footsteps followed afterwards.

I looked up and saw a woman standing at the top of the staircase.

My heart nearly stopped.

She had one hand resting protectively over a large baby bump as she carefully descended the stairs.

Blonde hair, slim figure, pretty face.

Recognition hit me so hard that I physically staggered backward.

Rosalie.

Brandon’s former secretary.

I had asked him to fire her a while ago because I felt she was up to no good.

My mouth hung open as I stared in unbelief.

ANASTASIA"Don't bother pouring coffee," Harrison said, slamming his heavy leather bag onto the table so hard it rattled my cup. "We don't have time for coffee."I kept my hands wrapped around my mug, watching him pace back and forth. "It's seven in the morning, Harrison. The court doesn't open for two hours.""They opened at midnight just for Marcus," Harrison said, reaching into his bag and pulling out a fat stack of papers with a bright blue cover. He threw them into the middle of the table, his tie crooked and his eyes bloodshot. "Marcus didn't sue us through the front door. He went straight to a judge's house at midnight and walked out with a emergency order."Across the table, Damien sat back in his chair. He didn't jump, and he didn't look worried. He was just spinning a dark metal pen between his fingers, his suit jacket unbuttoned, looking totally calm."What kind of order?" Damien asked, his voice low and flat."They are saying you aren't mentally fit to run the team," Harri

I pushed it open without making a sound.Anastasia was slouched sideways in my heavy leather armchair, her head resting flat against the edge of the mahogany desk. Her left arm was stretched out over a pile of printed financial audits, her fingers still holding a black pen that had leaked a tiny dot of ink onto the corner of a page. Her breathing was slow, heavy, and completely exhausted.I stood in the doorway for a long moment, my jaw tight. She had been running on three hours of sleep a night for a week straight, fighting Marcus's legal team line by line, burning herself out to keep her father's name on the front of the building. Seeing her like this—tiny, pale, and completely drained, lying in the dark under a single desk lamp—made a dark, restless anger churn in my chest.I walked acros

ANASTASIAThe light from the double monitors was burning holes straight into the back of my eyes.It was one in the morning. The main office on the fifth floor was completely dead, except for the server room where five of us were crammed around a folding table littered with empty energy drink cans, stale coffee cups, and printouts of system error logs.My phone vibrated against the desk for the twentieth time in two hours. I didn't even pick it up to check the screen. I knew who it was. Marcus. Or one of his stooges on the board trying to act like they were deeply concerned about the "technical difficulties" suddenly breaking our main network."Talk to me, Leo," I said, rubbing my temples with the heels of my hands. "Tell me we have something."Leo, our lead systems administrator, slammed his hand down on his mechanical keyboard and let out a long, frustrated breath. He was wearing the same grey hoodie he’d been in since yesterday morning, his eyes bloodshot and raw."It’s not a reg

DAMIENMy phone was buzzing against my leg before I even reached the top of the stairwell. I yanked it out and put it to my ear, my boots pounding hard against the concrete steps."Talk to me, Viktor," I growled into the mic."The garage is cleared out," Viktor said, his heavy voice breaking through static. "We towed the last civilian car out five minutes ago. The city parking authority is blowing my phone up. They say we're breaking the stadium lease agreement.""Fuck the city," I said, hitting the heavy push bar on the door and tearing into the main executive hallway. "Cancel the contract right now. Tear the lease up. Effective five seconds ago, the lower levels belong to us. Tell the gate guards if any car comes down that ramp without my personal clearance, put a bullet through the engine block.""Understood," Viktor said. "What about the stadium parking staff? The guys working the booths?""Fire every single one of them. Right now," I said, pacing fast down the carpeted hallway. "

ANASTASIA "The hard copies are locked in the trunk," Viktor said, his heavy voice echoing in the quiet, concrete expanse of the executive underground garage. "Damien is finishing up with the auditors on the fourth floor. He wants you waiting in the armored SUV, Ms. Black.""I can walk twenty feet to my own car, Viktor," I said, sliding my key fob out of my suit jacket. The sharp heel of my boots clicked against the polished concrete floor. "The garage is locked down. You have guards at every gate.""Doesn't matter," Viktor grunted, stepping two paces ahead of me with his right hand resting inside his tailored coat. "After what we found on Marcus's ledger tonight, nobody moves alone. Not even for twenty feet."I let out a slow breath, my thumb tracing the smooth metal of my key fob. The cold, damp air of the lower level made me shiver, but the adrenaline from the audit was still humming through my veins. We had Marcus trapped. The paper trail connecting his Swiss accounts to Brandon M

DAMIEN"Lock the doors from the outside, Viktor. Nobody leaves the executive floor until I say so," I said, my voice cutting through the quiet hum of the front office."The board members are already calling my cell, Boss," Viktor replied, stepping into the conference room with two heavy leather lockboxes in his arms. He set them down on the center table with a loud thud. "Marcus’s personal assistant tried to clear out his filing cabinet twenty minutes ago in the West Wing. My boys stopped her at the elevator.""Did she have the ledger?" I asked, walking over to the glass wall that overlooked the empty row of desks. My right shoulder was still stiff under my suit jacket, but the throbbing pain had dulled into a steady burn."She had three flash drives and a stack of shredded travel receipts," Viktor said. He gestured toward the door, where six men in sharp charcoal suits were walking in, each carrying heavy leather briefcases and high-speed encrypted laptops. "This is Miller’s forensic
