Donald lay motionless under the pale hospital lights while the cardiac monitor remained the only sound inside the intensive care unit. Damien stood beside the bed with one hand resting lightly against the metal rail, his gaze fixed on his father’s pale face. Gerald had finally managed to compose himself. Although his eyes were still red, he had stopped pacing and now stood beside the window with both hands buried inside his pockets. Neither brother spoke for several minutes. Eventually, Gerald broke the silence. “The police called me while I was driving here.” Damien slowly turned his head. “What did they say?” “They’re still investigating.” Damien frowned. “Were there other vehicles involved?” Gerald nodded. “There was a truck involved.” His jaw tightened. “The driver claims the brakes failed.” Gerald looked toward their unconscious father before speaking quietly. “Dad has always been careful, he never speeds or drives recklessly.” A faint movement caught Damien’s attention.
