Karlo Rodriguez had always warned me to never go inside his study whenever he is working. But now, I am standing in front of him, his table only barricading between us. He was filled with paperworks and currently manipulating his laptop. Despite the words that spewed out of my mouth, he remained unfazed and continued clicking on his keyboard. I inhaled sharply and crossed my arms, anger seething inside my system because I am pissed he was not even listening to me. “Did you not hear me? I want a divorce!” I repeated again, rising my voice this time. He paused and raised his gaze at me. I arched my eyebrow with a small smile on my lips, grateful that he is now paying attention on me. But then again, he lowered his eyes and now getting papers from the other side of the table. My jaw tightened by how casually he just ignored me. I groaned in frustration and slammed the table. “Karlo!” I exclaimed. “I don’t see any reason for you to divorce me, Minerva,” he said while still reading his stupid papers and signing them. “Well, I have! First, you don’t have time for me because you are always working; second, I want to travel but you would not let me; and third, I am tired of shopping with your bodyguards surrounding me all the time.” I saw how his lips formed a teasing smirk before he chuckled and lifted his eyes again at me. His back leaned against the swivel chair and stared into my eyes. I hated how he looked at me. It is not like he is not a handsome man, but I just do not like him. “Okay,” he said which made me cause joy and would have made me jump, but he added, “but no divorce.” My face became disgruntled. No divorce but okay? He must have noticed how confused I am so he tilted his head and started to explain what he meant. “I will start having time with you and less working. If you want to travel, I will come with you because I can’t let you travel alone. I will also remove all of my bodyguards when you go to shopping, as long as it is me who you are with.” Shit! I closed my eyes and zipped my mouth hardly just so I could not cuss him. But when I opened my eyes again, he was already walking towards me. The broad of his shoulders was now conspicuous by how his body blocking the view of his wall. He leveled my height by sitting on the table while crossing his arms. Now that he is near, I could appreciate the bulk of his body that is seem so tight in his dress shirt. He was also wearing slacks and his necktie was even not properly tied. His men perfume filled my nostrils and he smelled so good, too. Before I get dazed about how beautiful a man he was, I felt the back of his hand grazing at the side of ny face. My expected reaction would have moving away, but the electricity tickling my skin just by the brush of his fingertips was comforting, so I stayed and stopped breathing for a while because of it. Damn it. Why do I feel this way towards him? “Just because your parents are dead, does not mean you are already free,” he said slowly. “I know you don’t love me, and you don’t have to. You just have to stay with me.” “What the hell? How could I stay with you when I don’t even love you?” I retorted. I saw how he was taken aback by the way his reaction changed from soft to sad until it was neutral. He cleared his throat and avoided his gaze, especially his hand away from my face. “We should eat dinner,” he said with his husky voice and turned his back on me. I watched him go back to his swivel chair and sat, now continuing what he was doing. I only sighed heavily before exiting his study, hopeless by my plans. What was wrong with what I said? It is true that he is not the one that I love. We both know that we were just arranged by our both families to marry each other after I graduated from college. And yes, he may have a point that I wanted to get divorced now that my parents are both dead because of a car accident. I am sad that they are gone, but for some reason, after being controlled by them my whole life, I get to decide now what I want to do for myself. “When am I going to see you again?” “You have to wait, babe,” I said to Ian, my boyfriend, and sighed while looking outside the mansion through thw window of my room. “This stupid Karlos Rodriguez won’t let me go.” I heard him grunt in irritation. “If you don’t get divorced, how am I going to marry you, right?” he asked. “Minerva, we can’t stay like this forever. You have to do something to get rid of him.” “Do you think I am not doing anything?” “Then you are not doing enough!” Ian and I argued about Karlos dismissing me to get divorced. He is my boyfriend ever since I was a freshman in college. My parents were not in favor of him because I would admit that he did not come from a wealthy family. They are rich but his side was not as powerful and influential like Karlos’. “Ian, please!” I exclaimed, raising my voice, but when I realized that it was too strong, I looked at the door of my room, checking if it was heard from outside before saying something through my phone again. “You are the one that I love who I will marry after I sort everything out again. You just have to trust me.” “Minerva?” And there he is! I heard a knock on my door. It was Karlo. “Honey, it’s time for dinner!” he even said. “Honey?” Ian reacted from the other line. “That ass-“ “Ian, let it go,” I whispered and ended the call just so I could answer Karlo. “Coming!”I snapped out and instantly narrowed my gaze at him. I stood up while crossing my arms, facing the handsome bodyguard.“I don’t want to. I will go home. I am sure that they are just going to make me meet a man I don’t even know, so I could marry him!” I exclaimed and hovered my gaze from his head to foot. “But why am I even explaining myself to a bodyguard like you?”“Bodyguard?” he echoed with confusion across his face.“Yes, bodyguard,” I responded. He tilted his head. “Do you have any problem meeting your future husband?” he asked.“The only husband I can accept in my life is my boyfriend,” I said.“You are not even interested in meeting your parents, who wanted you to marry, huh?”“For what? I don’t even know that man! I bet he is an ugly asshole who has the worst body built and is very stupid! He blinked. After that, he barked out a handsome laugh that made me breathless. I gulped and shook my head at myself. What, Minerva? Why are you even overwhelmed by this man? He is nothing
Clearing my throat, I raised the towel to Karlo’s face and began wiping his sweat away. I am better masking my anxiety by making my expression straight and stoic. I don’t want him to see that I am nervous as hell just by touching his body, but the shaking of my hand was evident, betraying every ounce of my dignity. Still, I continued.“Wow,” I heard Timothy comment again, just like he always does. “You’re making fun of my marital status again…”“Who told you, anyway, not to get a girlfriend? You have the free will to do so,” Karlo replied to him without breaking his eye contact with me.Timothy scoffed. “As if I would find a perfect lady like my cousin. You are very lucky to marry the princess of the family, Karlo.”I cringed at what my cousin said, so I pouted and glared at him. I was surprised when Karlo chuckled. I looked up to him again.“I definitely know how lucky I am,” Karlo agreed.“Boo! So corny! Do you have juice inside your ref? I’m so thirsty,” Timothy complained before w
I woke up when some days of the sun went through the window of my room. It is already morning. When I looked at my phone, it was seven AM already. I stretched out before I went outside. The living room was dead silent. I saw Timothy lying on the couch with his mouth open. His clothes were Karlo’s. I rolled my eyes when I realized that he didn’t even visit in preparation and had no clothes with him. I heard frying from the kitchen, which I believe Karlo’s doing.“What are you cooking?” I asked when I went inside the kitchen.“Good morning,” he greeted and smiled. “Eggs and bacon. Would you like a coffee?”I suddenly remembered his answer to Timothy last night. He loves me. He would gladly accept his death if I were the one to kill him. I avoided my eyes and approached the cabinet of mugs.“No need. I will be the one making. Did you drink coffee?” I asked.“No, I waited for you and Timothy to wake up.”“Then I will make it.”“Sure.”Even if I was doing the coffees, I could still feel hi
I was alone training in the backyard, even though it was getting darker. Karlo installed a boxing bag in the middle of the yard that I could play combat with. The sun was already down. The wind was getting colder every twenty minutes. There was no hunger possessing me yet, because I am too focused on punching and kicking the mannequin.Months have already passed by, but the blood-pale face of Victor and the attempted killings for me were still fresh. Those memories were my nightmares every night. I will not forget the evil smile that was plastered across Helen’s face as she shot Victor, who protected me.That bullet was for me. Victor is a good guy. He didn’t deserve to be dead by now. I should have died. Not me. Why did I have to live?“Aahhhh!!!” I exclaimed as I jumped in the air, turned, and did a flying kick on the mannequin’s face. “K.O…”Next time, I will make sure that it is Helen’s face.I sensed a presence from the kitchen’s open door. Before I could even regard it, the pers
“Minerva, you have a husband?” Jerlyn mumbled. They looked at Karlo behind me. I sighed in dismay.“Yes.” Kristine was the one who answered the question. “Minerva and her husband are both from mafia organizations in the Philippines. They kill people, exploit money, and are lawbreakers. They have my
“Kristine! Can you please explain to me what is going on?!” I demanded as I kept dodging her knife.Last night’s memories were like a deja vu to me. I was dodging while my attackers tried to get close to me and harm me. If Karlo hadn’t arrived on time, I would have been dead for now!“I never met y
There was something about the frigid voice of Kristine. It was so unusual that I got goosebumps when she ended the call. It was obvious that she had been crying, and I don’t even know the reason. Even our friends are confused. Birthdays should come with joy, not with tears.“Is everything okay? Why
Silence prevailed between Karlo and me while we were inside the elevator. On the other hand, I could see from our both reflections that he was hovering my body from my head to toe. He wanted to comment, but he stopped himself. The elevator sounded opening, revealing numerous cars in the parking lot
