I just snapped back into reality when I felt warm hands wrapping around my body as the firing of bullets filled my ears. When I shakingly looked up, I saw the face of Karlo who was clenching his jaw as he kept shooting with his gun with me being held by him.
I don’t even know what was happening anymore. The last thing I remember was being carried by his arms while we were jumping off the balcony. Am I dead? Because for some reason, I did not feel hurt. Or maybe, that is what you experience when you face death. Nothing but only dark silence. “You can leave,” a voice echoed in my ears. Leave? Who will leave? After a while, I heard a familiar sigh. Someone cleared its throat before speaking up. “What now, Karlo? Everyone will hunt your wife now,” I heard a man’s voice. My head was still light when I started opening my eyes. At first, everything was spinning around for I was dizzy. The white ceiling almost blinded me, but I also realized that I was in our mansion again. Why am I here? I thought it was already heaven! I moved my face sideways and the first person I saw was Karlo who was talking to Timothy, my cousin. They were both wearing casual shirts, meaning they do not have work. They were currently talking just beside the doors of my room’s balcony. Their facial expressions were deadly serious as if they are carrying the world. “The enemies of Tito Dranreb have already known his identity. Of course they l will make Minerva as a target now. What next? Ambush her like what happened to her parents?” Enemies of my dad? And… ambush me? What are they talking about? Karlo massaged the bridge of his nose and shut his eyes tightly as if he was stressed of the things Timothy was saying. Timothy started pacing back and forth. And then, he leaned over to Karlo and pointed his index finger at Karlo. “If something happens to my sister, you are dead to me. You got that?” Timothy warned Karlo. “I tried my best in protecting her-“ “Well you did not fucking tried enough.” And the next thing I knew, Timothy was walking throughout the door. Karlo stayed standing and also followed Timothy with his sharp eyes. He must have felt me watching him so he shifted his gaze upon me. He blinked and replaced his dark expression into a relieved one. Later on, he started walking towards me. “Are you alright? What do you feel now?” he worriedly asked when he was finally standing in front of me. Before I could even speak up to answer him, he had already turned to telephone beside my bed and called the head maid to bring a tray of food and water. I just watched him do that until he sat on the bed and stared at my face. “Does something hurt with you now?” he softly asked. “What were you and Timothy talking about?” I asked, my voice weak but the tone is authoritative. “Protecting me from whom? And what did it has to do with my dad?” He did not even react at the fact that I heard them, but only shook his head. “You have to rest-“ “Ever since I was a little kid, I have already been sensing som weird things about my parents. I disregarded it because I did not care. But the weirdest thing they did was arranging me to marry you…” I uttered and squinted my eyes. “And just last night, my best friend from college had a gun pointing at me. Next, you were shooting her in the middle of the party’s chaos-“ “Please, Minerva, this is not the right time-“ he tried to say. “- so tell me what the fuck just happened last night that is connected to the conversation you had with my cousin?” We stared at each other. I glared at him to let him know that I am full with mixed frustation and confusion right now. Silence engulfed us before he decided to speak up again. “Your parents are the founders of the Red Cartel,” he revealed. “It is an organization with assassins who kill enemies of the government, like mafia gangs and huge criminals in the country.” “They are what?” I exclaimed. “It was a secret organization, so the identities of your parents especially yours were under the special protection of the government, because the Red Cartel is also executing traitors and threats of the cities. But for some reason, the enemies of your parents tracked who they are and planned a deadly ambush.” Tears started to form in my eyes. He was taken aback by my disoriented face, but he decided to continue what he was saying. This time, he put his hand above mine and squeezed it. Usually, I would be uncomfortable because I did not like him touching in any inch of my body, but it felt like he is just there for me as I faced the truth. “You have to understand, Minerva, that your parents were very powerful people in this country. They might not be known by the good ones who they are protecting. Moreover, they are heroes; treated as enemies by the criminals,” he said. “And now that they are gone, you are destined to be taking over the Red Cartel, that is why a lot of enemies will come after you, wishing you dead.” “What the hell…” I was about to remove his hand but he tightened it more. I gritted my teeth to use my strength on him. He only matched it, though. “Let go of me!” I demanded. “Minerva, you are the future Red Cartel Queen!” he said. “And no matter what happens, I will be here to always protect you!” “I do not know what you are saying! I just want you to get out of my room! Now! I hate you to hell!”I snapped out and instantly narrowed my gaze at him. I stood up while crossing my arms, facing the handsome bodyguard.“I don’t want to. I will go home. I am sure that they are just going to make me meet a man I don’t even know, so I could marry him!” I exclaimed and hovered my gaze from his head to foot. “But why am I even explaining myself to a bodyguard like you?”“Bodyguard?” he echoed with confusion across his face.“Yes, bodyguard,” I responded. He tilted his head. “Do you have any problem meeting your future husband?” he asked.“The only husband I can accept in my life is my boyfriend,” I said.“You are not even interested in meeting your parents, who wanted you to marry, huh?”“For what? I don’t even know that man! I bet he is an ugly asshole who has the worst body built and is very stupid! He blinked. After that, he barked out a handsome laugh that made me breathless. I gulped and shook my head at myself. What, Minerva? Why are you even overwhelmed by this man? He is nothing
Clearing my throat, I raised the towel to Karlo’s face and began wiping his sweat away. I am better masking my anxiety by making my expression straight and stoic. I don’t want him to see that I am nervous as hell just by touching his body, but the shaking of my hand was evident, betraying every ounce of my dignity. Still, I continued.“Wow,” I heard Timothy comment again, just like he always does. “You’re making fun of my marital status again…”“Who told you, anyway, not to get a girlfriend? You have the free will to do so,” Karlo replied to him without breaking his eye contact with me.Timothy scoffed. “As if I would find a perfect lady like my cousin. You are very lucky to marry the princess of the family, Karlo.”I cringed at what my cousin said, so I pouted and glared at him. I was surprised when Karlo chuckled. I looked up to him again.“I definitely know how lucky I am,” Karlo agreed.“Boo! So corny! Do you have juice inside your ref? I’m so thirsty,” Timothy complained before w
I woke up when some days of the sun went through the window of my room. It is already morning. When I looked at my phone, it was seven AM already. I stretched out before I went outside. The living room was dead silent. I saw Timothy lying on the couch with his mouth open. His clothes were Karlo’s. I rolled my eyes when I realized that he didn’t even visit in preparation and had no clothes with him. I heard frying from the kitchen, which I believe Karlo’s doing.“What are you cooking?” I asked when I went inside the kitchen.“Good morning,” he greeted and smiled. “Eggs and bacon. Would you like a coffee?”I suddenly remembered his answer to Timothy last night. He loves me. He would gladly accept his death if I were the one to kill him. I avoided my eyes and approached the cabinet of mugs.“No need. I will be the one making. Did you drink coffee?” I asked.“No, I waited for you and Timothy to wake up.”“Then I will make it.”“Sure.”Even if I was doing the coffees, I could still feel hi
I was alone training in the backyard, even though it was getting darker. Karlo installed a boxing bag in the middle of the yard that I could play combat with. The sun was already down. The wind was getting colder every twenty minutes. There was no hunger possessing me yet, because I am too focused on punching and kicking the mannequin.Months have already passed by, but the blood-pale face of Victor and the attempted killings for me were still fresh. Those memories were my nightmares every night. I will not forget the evil smile that was plastered across Helen’s face as she shot Victor, who protected me.That bullet was for me. Victor is a good guy. He didn’t deserve to be dead by now. I should have died. Not me. Why did I have to live?“Aahhhh!!!” I exclaimed as I jumped in the air, turned, and did a flying kick on the mannequin’s face. “K.O…”Next time, I will make sure that it is Helen’s face.I sensed a presence from the kitchen’s open door. Before I could even regard it, the pers
“Minerva, you have a husband?” Jerlyn mumbled. They looked at Karlo behind me. I sighed in dismay.“Yes.” Kristine was the one who answered the question. “Minerva and her husband are both from mafia organizations in the Philippines. They kill people, exploit money, and are lawbreakers. They have my father now. My mother is dead, because they killed her last night.”That must be the reason why she couldn’t stop crying a while ago. From what I get now, her parents must be mafia or assassins. They were the ones who attacked me.“I didn’t get why my parents, Minerva? Why did you have to take them away, too?” Kristine said.“Because Helen investigated the people who are close to her,” Karlo answered again, which made me slap his hand, but he didn’t shut the hell up. “When she knew that your parents were government assassins in this city, she hired them and reasoned out that Minerva is an escaped fugitive from the Philippines. It was all a lie, so they could kill Minerva last night. That is
“No, no!” I mumbled as I was glued to the floor with Victor's fall.“What have you done?! I told you not to hurt Victor, you psychopathic bitch!” Kristine shouted at Helen.Helen didn’t even budge and just blew off the smoke from the tip of her gun. “Ooops, wrong target…”I felt anger seething through my veins. My body shaking, my lips trembling, and my fists clenching. Helen cackled and pointed the gun at me again. I wasn’t threatened. I just glared at her, making sure she was not out of sight.“You will pay for this, Helen. Your blood will drench my hands. Watch it,” I said, compromising her future.“Ooooh, I’m scared. What could a spoiled brat like you do? You couldn’t even defend your parents when they were ambushed?”“Yes. Ambushed by your organization.”She bestowed a confused expression with a still grin on her lips. After a second, I could hear a chopper from outside the building. I didn’t take my eyes off her while Kristine was still crying below me with Victor in her arms. S
“Kristine! Can you please explain to me what is going on?!” I demanded as I kept dodging her knife.Last night’s memories were like a deja vu to me. I was dodging while my attackers tried to get close to me and harm me. If Karlo hadn’t arrived on time, I would have been dead for now!“I never met y
There was something about the frigid voice of Kristine. It was so unusual that I got goosebumps when she ended the call. It was obvious that she had been crying, and I don’t even know the reason. Even our friends are confused. Birthdays should come with joy, not with tears.“Is everything okay? Why
Silence prevailed between Karlo and me while we were inside the elevator. On the other hand, I could see from our both reflections that he was hovering my body from my head to toe. He wanted to comment, but he stopped himself. The elevator sounded opening, revealing numerous cars in the parking lot
“We still held the attacker as a hostage. My men are watching over him. He’s unconscious. Once he wakes up, we will interrogate him,” Karlo explained to me.I furrowed my eyebrows. “Do you think Helen is behind this?”Karlo sighed and massaged the bridge of his nose. “Well, I received news from Tim
