Chapter 1

"Joey? I'm talking to you."

The car turned onto a smooth stretch of road, and he reached over to pinch my cheek.

I looked down, running my fingers over my bare ring finger. My voice was calm.

"Sorry, what did you say? I wasn't listening."

Noticing my hand, Theo kept one hand on the steering wheel and wrapped the other around mine.

"Come on, Joey, be reason..."

I pulled my hand free under the pretense of tucking my hair back.

His hand hung in the air where mine had been, and his body stiffened for a moment.

"It's just a ring. Is that really worth getting upset over?"

He let out a soft laugh and coaxed me in that low, smooth voice of his.

"Sophia's still young. Everything's new and shiny to her. Letting her wear it for a bit isn't a big deal."

"You've had that sour look on your face all day. You scared her."

A sour look?

Was I supposed to smile when she was wearing my ring?

"Theo."

"I waited seven years for that ring. For that proposal."

The arrogant smile froze on his face.

He quickly averted his eyes, turning back to the road.

"Back then my pack hadn't risen yet. I couldn't give you a stable life. Are you upset about that too?"

His tone was dismissive. "The pack is growing stronger every day. You're going to be my one and only mate. What the hell is one ring?"

"Be reasonable. Once we're married, you'll have so much more."

He always used that phrase to shut me down before I could even start an argument.

His promises sounded sweet, but he never followed through on a single one.

Seven years ago, he was nothing more than the leader of a small, remote pack, constantly under attack from rival packs.

And I was the daughter of the Alpha of the Celestial Pack, the most powerful pack there was.

When he confessed his feelings to me, he cried.

"Joey, trust me. One day I'll make the Starlight Pack stronger than any other, and I'll give you everything you've ever wanted."

"You're my chosen mate. The only one I'll ever want."

I held onto those words for seven years.

The car pulled into the villa's garage, and Theo kissed my hand out of habit.

"My schedule's wide open now. To make it up to you, how about I take you shopping tomorrow? I'll buy you as many diamond rings as you want."

In the past, I would have thrown my arms around him, told him I didn't need anything as long as he was by my side.

But now I felt nothing. Not even hope. Just a faint sense of disgust.

"No thanks. I just want to rest."

Theo ruffled my hair, a smile plastered on his face. "You're still mad?"

Then he glanced at his phone and told me, "Sophia says a proposal ring isn't perfect without a fiancé, so she wants me to play her fiancé for a day tomorrow."

"It's just to make her happy. It doesn't mean anything."

"Joey, be reasonable, okay? Don't be petty about this."

"Fine."

I nodded without missing a beat.

Theo smiled with satisfaction and mussed up my hair. "Good girl."

Inside, Theo went to make coffee.

I sat down at my computer and opened the unread email.

This was a position I'd applied for a long time ago. My mentor had been recommending me for it, and now, finally, there was an answer.

I typed my reply. "Thank you, Professor. My flight leaves in two days."

She must have been waiting for me, because the reply came almost instantly.

"Wonderful. Men are nothing but a pastime. Having a career of your own is what really matters."

Reading those words, I nodded.

That's right. Since Sophia loved borrowing other people's things and keeping them, she could have this man too.

Theo saw it all from a short distance away.He was still on crutches. His leg hadn't fully healed.I looked at him calmly, and he looked back at me the same way.But unlike mine, his calm was laced with despair. After a bitter smile, he turned and limped away on his crutches. The next day, when I left my building, the ever-present gaze was gone.Theo had gone home.Anna called to tell me Theo had lost his mind. What I saw that day was probably the last time he'd been in his right mind."Joey, you have no idea what he's been doing!"Anna sounded exasperated. "He showed up at my door again and crouched there for hours, not saying a word, just crying.""And after he finally left, I heard Sophia went to see him, and he beat her up!"I almost laughed. "Why would he hit Sophia?""Because once she found out you were getting married, she figured she finally had her chance and went after Theo. But he blamed everything on her.""It was brutal. The healers almost gave up on her. She barely pulled

Weston walked me out of the restaurant. On the way back to the office, I studied his hand with concern."Are you hurt?"He shrugged casually. "Not at all. He's the one who's going to need some time to recover."I looked away, embarrassed. "Sorry for dragging you into that, Weston.""No. It was my pleasure."After that day, every time I left for work, I felt a pair of eyes watching me.When I checked the security footage, it was Theo.He hadn't left. He'd stayed in London. He was living at a hotel right across the street from my building.Every day, he'd watch me leave for work, silently follow me, and watch me walk into the office. Then wait downstairs until I got off.On weekends, he'd leave breakfast at my door. Freshly baked bread, pastries for afternoon tea, ice cream. All my favorite flavors. He never approached me. He just kept watching. After a dinner with coworkers one evening, I'd had a few drinks and was trying to hail a cab on the street. That was when Theo appeared. He look

I looked at the shimmering moonstone ring.Once, I believed that if he put the Moon Goddess's moonstone ring on my finger, it would mean I was the one he'd chosen, the mate he'd never let go.But the moment I realized he'd give that ring to just anyone, I was done."Theo."My voice was barely above a whisper. "Sophia already wore that ring."The hope froze on Theo's face."Someone else wore it. It disgusts me.""No!"Theo's face flushed crimson. His voice shook, and the ring nearly slipped from his fingers."Joey, nothing ever happened! She's just a sister to me!""She's immature, and I've already scolded her for it!""While you've been gone, I've barely contacted her or seen her. When we go back, I promise she won't come anywhere near you!""I completely redid the entire house. Everything is exactly the way you want it. I threw out every single piece of her stuff!""Joey, you have to believe me! I swear I'm telling the truth! Just come back home with me!"His words rushed out in a des

Over the next few months, I threw myself into work and cut all ties with everything back home.My mentor was partnering with one of London's most prominent firms, and my role was Director of Marketing.I settled into the company's fast pace quickly, and every day felt full and purposeful. After work, I'd sit in a cafe with a sandwich and a glass of milk, watching people stroll by. It was bliss.London at night was beautiful, so different from what I was used to. The old architecture gave the city a richness that lifted my spirits.I sipped my milk in silence, listening to music, and never once thought about the man who only ever asked me to back down and be reasonable.Three months later, after landing another major client, I was promoted to Vice President. The CEO, Weston, was also a werewolf, from the ancient Greywolf Pack.He brought me to his office and smiled."Joey, you're going to be the next powerhouse around here. Just like the woman who founded this company, you'll lead us to

I opened the app. It was a photo.Sophia was beaming, cradling a cat plushie. In the next photo, a tall figure stood with his back to the camera, wearing a tailored suit and a Cartier belt. His long, elegant hands were opening a gift box for her.The caption read: "My little kitty broke, but he was sweet enough to buy me the newest limited edition. He waited in line for two hours!"Below it, Theo had commented: "As long as you like it."On the other end of the line, Anna was livid. "Joey! You're just going to sit there and watch Theo fuss over another woman without saying a word?""It's your birthday today. What did he get you?""Nothing," I said."Oh my God! Don't tell me you're not even angry!"I laughed. "Not angry. Because I'm done with him. I'm going to London, sweetheart."There was a long silence on the other end. Finally, Anna let out a sigh."Joey, you're so brave. You're doing the right thing. It's time to find your own life."I smiled and hung up.Then I turned off my phone,

Theo came back around noon.He saw the boxes I'd packed up and frowned. "Why is all this packed?"I didn't look up. "Throwing out trash."When Theo realized the boxes were filled with the things he'd bought me, his voice shot up."Joey, there's a limit to your damn tantrums!"He violently kicked the closest box, pacing the room like a caged animal."This is still about the ring, isn't it? When are you going to let it go?""I bought you all of this. Now you think it's taking up space? What, are you going to move out too?"I stood up and looked at him calmly."Yes."Theo froze for a second, then pressed a hand to his forehead, caught between frustration and disbelief."Are you joking, Joey?"He pulled off his suit jacket and dropped onto the bed, his tone cold and dismissive."Where would you even go? You don't even have a job. How would you support yourself?""Joey, I thought you were a mature woman, but you're getting more and more childish. Are you packing your bags to run away from h
