Stella's POV

"Mrs. Marchetti, you have Type A blood. This blood bag is Type B. Are you sure you want us to proceed with the transfusion?" the nurse asked as she held up the blood bag, her brow furrowed.

"Go ahead." My voice was as light as a feather. "My husband, Don Marcello Marchetti, signed the consent form himself. There's no way it'd be a mistake."

The nurse hesitated for a few seconds before finally letting out a sigh and tearing open the packaging. The moment the needle pierced my vein, a chill spread from my wrist straight to my heart.

Slowly, I closed my eyes. In under 20 minutes, I started feeling a dull pain in my lower back. It felt like someone was carving into my bones with a blunt knife.

Then came the fever. My whole body trembled. No matter how tightly I wrapped myself in the blanket, it didn't help. My teeth chattered, making faint clicking sounds.

At that moment, the door flew open with a kick.

Marcello Marchetti strode in, the collar of his shirt hanging open and a lipstick stain still visible on his neck. Behind him was Letizia Marchetti, who looked perfectly normal and unscathed. She was wearing a sequined spaghetti-strap dress, her eyes red-rimmed, making her look delicate and pitiful.

"What kind of stunt are you trying to pull this time?" Marcello snapped after walking up to the bed and staring down at me. "The doctor already said you only have superficial injuries and a mild concussion. Why are you shaking like that?"

Gritting my teeth through the pain that was intensifying in my lower back, I said, "I'm cold."

Marcello let out a mocking laugh and adjusted his tie. "Cold? The room is set to 77 degrees Fahrenheit. Why would you be cold?"

He turned toward Letizia, and his voice immediately softened as he said to her, "Letizia, turn up the thermostat. Otherwise, your sister-in-law will find another excuse to complain."

Letizia obediently nodded and walked over to the controls on the wall. After pressing a few buttons, she turned back around and looked at me timidly. "I'm so sorry, Stella. I really didn't know you'd be driving that car. I just wanted to test my new program... Cello already scolded me. Please don't be mad, okay?"

Tears began rolling down her cheeks.

Marcello immediately pulled her behind him protectively and shot me a dark look. "That's enough. Letizia nearly got hurt at the bar just now. She has already been through a terrifying ordeal tonight, yet she came all this way here just to apologize to you. What more do you want?"

I looked at his righteous expression. Out of nowhere, I found myself feeling rather amused.

The car had rolled three times on the highway. I had nearly died in that crash.

But what my own husband cared about the most was whether Letizia had been taken advantage of at the bar.

"She's been through a terrifying ordeal, you say?" My voice was as rough as sandpaper. "She went clubbing and got hit on by a man. In your eyes, that's a terrifying ordeal. In that case, what do you call nearly dying in a car crash?"

Marcello frowned, the impatience practically spilling out of his eyes. "Why do you keep talking about death? Haven't I already arranged for the best medical team in the city to attend to you? Besides, a military-grade collision protection system was installed on that car. Letizia had already calculated the odds to prove that you would've been just fine."

She'd run the calculations, huh?

I stared at the blood dripping steadily from the bag I was hooked up to, the one containing Type B blood. It was slowly flowing into my veins, destroying my cells and organs.

Letizia had indeed calculated every last detail with pinpoint accuracy.

"Marcello," I called out quietly. "What if I really end up dying?"

He stiffened for a moment before scoffing at me. "This again? Whenever Letizia makes the tiniest mistake, you use your death to threaten me. Don't you know that the way you're acting just gets on my nerves?"

He pulled over a chair, sat down, and crossed his legs. "Drop the act. If you feel uncomfortable, I'll tell the doctor to prescribe you some painkillers.

"Letizia was badly shaken today. I need to stay with her tonight. You can stay here by yourself and get some rest."

I said nothing.

My body temperature kept climbing, and my vision began to blur. My chest felt as though it were on fire. Every breath I took made my lungs feel like they were burning.

I knew what this meant—these were the early symptoms of a hemolytic transfusion reaction. The red blood cells all over my body were rupturing.

"Are you not feeling well, Stella?" Letizia tugged on Marcello's sleeve. "Her face looks really red."

Marcello didn't even glance at me. "What are you talking about? It's probably because she's mad that I'm not staying here with her."

He got back on his feet and eyed me, his gaze as cold as ice. "Stella, I'm only going to say this one last time—stop playing these stupid games with me just because you're jealous. Letizia is my sister. It's my duty to protect her. If you ever take this attitude with her again, I won't go easy on you."

Staring right back at him, I smiled. "Sure. You'd better do everything you can to protect her, then."

Scoffing, Marcello took Letizia's hand and walked off. "We're going. Let's not waste any more of our time on this crazy woman."

The door slammed shut.

I looked at the nearly-drained bag of blood and closed my eyes.

"It's too late for that."Letizia collapsed onto the floor. Letizia's POVLetizia was jolted awake by the sound of urgent knocks on the door at 2:00 am. Half-asleep, she opened the door to find Marcello standing on her doorstep. He was soaking wet. The rain was pouring outside, and water dripped from his disheveled hair. His eyes were bloodshot, and his face as pale as a ghost."Cello? Why are you—"Marcello grabbed her by the throat and slammed her against the wall. "Letizia, did you cause Stella's accident on purpose that day?"Letizia could barely breathe. Tears squeezed out of her eyes. "L-Let go, Cello… I can't breathe…""Answer me!" He tightened his grip. "Did you stage the whole thing at the bar that night? Did you tamper with the medical equipment at the hospital to set off the alarm?"Letizia's face turned blue. Her eyes bulged as she struggled, on the verge of suffocation. Just when she thought she was going to die, he abruptly let go.She slid down the wall, coughing violently as she gasped for air."Cello… I don't know what

Marcello's POVEvery detail from that night flashed before Marcello's eyes once more. Letizia had called, saying that someone at the bar had drugged her. He dashed off without even bothering to check the transfusion consent form properly first—and he'd ended up selecting the wrong blood type for Stella. And now, Stella was dead. If he hadn't left that night… If he'd taken the time to check the form first… If…"No… No…"Marcello collapsed onto the floor, his face completely drained of color."That's not all." Tommaso crouched down to continue staring him in the eye. "Letizia claimed she was testing some kind of brake system on the day of Stella's crash, right? Well, do you know how Letizia knew that Stella would be driving that specific car?"Marcello shook his head mechanically."Stella wasn't even supposed to drive the car in the first place." Tommaso's voice shook. "She was going to take your armored Maybach, but Letizia slashed its tires in advance, forcing Stella to use the

Marcello's POVOn the third day after Stella's death, the Marchetti family convened for an emergency meeting. It was held in the estate's grand conference room. The long table was filled with men in suits, sitting on both sides with grim faces. Vincente Romano, the underboss, was a man in his 60s with graying hair, but his gaze remained as sharp as a hawk."Marcello, you must sign the cremation authorization," Vincente said, his tone leaving no room for argument. "You've kept Stella's body in the cellar for three days now. If this continues—""I won't sign it," Marcello said from the seat at the head of the table, his face dark. "Anyone who touches her will die."Vincente sighed. "I know you're grieving, Marcello, but the dead can't be brought back to life. You should let her rest in peace.""I said I won't sign it! That's final!" Marcello jumped to his feet, his chair toppling backward with a heavy crash.A stifling silence fell over the room. After a few seconds, Vincente sp

Letizia's POVLetizia found out about Stella's death that same afternoon. She was in her luxury apartment in the opulent Mountcrest district, doing her manicure with a face mask on.One of Marcello's men stood at the door and informed her flatly, "Mrs. Marchetti passed away last night."Letizia paused for a moment before humming nonchalantly in acknowledgment. "Got it."She dismissed the man with a wave of her hand. After the door closed, Letizia peeled off the face mask and walked to the mirror. The woman in the reflection was young and beautiful, in her early 20s, with flawless skin and large eyes that gleamed with an almost manic brightness. After staring at herself for ages, she abruptly chuckled."Dead, huh? She's really dead?"Her laughter kept growing until it sounded like an almost crazed cackle. She doubled over, squealing with laughter until tears streamed down her face."You're finally dead, Stella. I told you—I will forever be Cello's first choice. He loves me the

Marcello's POVOver the next three days, Marcello acted as if he'd completely lost his mind. He refused to sign the cremation authorization and forcibly took Stella's body from the morgue, placing it in a cryogenic casket in the cellar beneath the Marchetti estate.Every day, he sat beside the casket, talking to her as if she could still hear him."Are you still upset, Stella? I chased Letizia out. I won't talk to her anymore. Can you open your eyes and look at me?"His voice echoed through the empty cellar. The only response was the low hum of the refrigeration system built into the casket.Stella lay in the casket, her skin as pale and smooth as marble. The mortician had already done her makeup. Her lips were faintly tinted, making it seem as though she were merely asleep. But Marcello knew she wouldn't be waking up again. He reached out, pressing his palm against the transparent lid, tracing the outline of her face."Do you remember the first time we met?
