Nate’s POV

Celeste stared at the papers on my desk like they might bite her.

“Davis Investigation Services.” She read it out loud slowly. Then her eyes dropped again to the name written in bold capital letters on the top “Avery Monroe.”

My stomach sank. The room seemed to tilt slightly. I opened my mouth to say something but nothing came out.

“Avery Monroe.” She repeated, picking up the folder with her hands shaking. “You’re looking for Avery Monroe.”

“Celeste…”

“How long?” Her voice cracked. “

  • He was never mine   Someone Knows More

Wyatt’s POVMarcus dropped into the chair across from my desk and exhaled hard, looking like he’d been running on coffee and bad news. The fact that he’d come straight in without so much as a greeting told me whatever he had wasn’t good. I looked up from the papers on my desk.He dragged a hand across his face. "You know, at this point, throw a rock in New York and there's a decent chance it'll hit somebody who hates your family.""This isn't funny.""I didn't say it was funny." He held up both hands. "I said it's statistically possible."He started counting on his fingers. "Former employees, competitors, people Celeste wrecked, people Nate wrecked while he was drunk and not paying attention." Another finger went up. "Possibly an entire support group meeting somewhere that none of us know about.""Marcus.""You people collect enemies like trophies. It's impressive, honestly. In a terrible way."I leaned back in the chair and looked at him. "Why are you actually here?"The humor disa

  • He was never mine   Targeting My Family

Wyatt's POVI barely slept that night. Every time I closed my eyes, I saw Avery push against my chest, cover her mouth, and rush to the bathroom. Her pale face in the mirror afterward stuck with me. Stress wasn’t new to Avery. I’d seen her carry more than most people could survive. But this? This didn’t look like stress.By six-thirty, I went downstairs.I made tea, toasted some bread, and cut up the last strawberries in the fridge. Nothing heavy, just things she might actually keep down. I arranged everything onto a tray and made my way upstairs to our room.Maybe she was right. Maybe she just needed rest.I pushed the bedroom door open with my shoulder, tray in both hands. She was awake, sitting up against the headboard, phone in hand, thumbs moving across the screen at a speed that didn’t match someone who was stressed. Then she saw me. The screen went off, the phone flipped face-down and slid it under the pillow.I stood in the doorway and looked at her."That looked suspicious

  • He was never mine   Not Just Stress

Avery 's POVThe internet had finally accepted that Arielle Montreaux and Avery Sterling were the same person. Fashion blogs were still running articles, reporters followed me out of buildings, three different podcasts had done episodes. Some called me "the woman who lived two lives." Others went with "the mystery designer." One particularly creative blog called me "the Cinderella who built her own castle," which I found all flattering and clingy.I'd stopped reading the headlines after day three. The attention drained me, but the business side? That had exploded in the best way.The bridal collection was a hit. Orders were coming in. Custom pieces kept clients calling nonstop. The Monochrome website had crashed twice. Elise had been smiling nonstop for an entire week, which honestly felt like a warning sign. She burst into my office that morning, tablet in hand, eyes wide with excitement. She looked ready to explode if she didn’t share the news fast."Do you understand what you've

  • He was never mine   Nothing Left To Fight For

Wyatt’s PovI barely slept.I lay beside Avery in the dark, the board’s words looping in my head. The weight underneath was clear. This was damage control, and they needed someone to blame.By six am I gave up. I slipped out of bed quickly, went downstairs, and made coffee. Then I got dressed, everything formal. Walking into a Sterling Industries board meeting looking half-dead wasn’t an option.I stood at the kitchen window with my second cup when I heard her on the stairs.Avery appeared, hair loose, still in her sleep shirt. She squinted at me. “Did you sleep?” She asked, voice still rough.“A little.”She looked at me properly. "You look terrible, Wyatt.""Thanks, baby."She crossed the kitchen and pressed her hand flat against my chest, reading my face. “What happened? The call last night, what was it?” I told her about the Sterling industry board meeting and Nate being called in. She didn’t say anything at first. She just watched me, as if she was listening to the words and

  • He was never mine   One Problem Ends

Wyatt's POVShe turned forward and didn’t look back.I kept my eyes on the road and let the silence sit between us. Avery rested her head against the window, watching the city pass by but my mind wasn’t quiet.Anonymous…The word had stuck in my head since the officer slid that folder across the table. Someone sent an email that cracked open a years-old murder case, someone with evidence Marcus didn’t have, someone that had time and access to build the evidence. By the time we got home, Avery’s eyes were heavy. She made it upstairs and fell asleep within minutes, still in her clothes, one shoe half off. I pulled the blanket over her, kissed her forehead, and turned off the lamp. Then I went downstairs. The kitchen stayed quiet. I made coffee I probably didn’t need and stood at the counter staring at nothing while the machine ran.Three weeks ago, I’d been sure Marcus sent that email. I’d told him to send the evidence he got to California. He was the only one who made sense, he'd be

  • He was never mine   Let Them Go

Avery’s POVTwo weeks later, things had finally settled. It wasn’t perfect, but for the first time in a long time, I could breathe.Celeste was still in custody. The pool deck investigation had officially closed after she admitted she intentionally tampered with the railing to delay the divorce proceedings and buy herself time to secure more of Nate’s assets.California was a different story. The investigation into her first husband’s death was still ongoing. The police kept uncovering pieces of information they hadn’t seen before, and the nurse connected to the case had also been taken into custody for questioning.Through all of it, Monochrome kept thriving.I sat in my office with Elise and two staff members reviewing the final reports from California Fashion Week. The sales reports and media rankings on my tablet made me blink twice.“Top three,” I said slowly.“Top three,” Elise repeated, looking entirely too pleased with herself.“Not just in California,” my assistant added exci

Avery ’s POV“Long time no see, Avery Monroe.”The voice cut through the darkness like a saw and I froze. The figure stood up and stepped forward into the light, blonde hair styled perfectly, designer coat that doesn’t belong in this building and those cold eyes I recognized immediately.Celeste C
