Alexa
The same balcony that father had fallen from ten years ago loomed over me. The same spot where they had claimed my father took his life.
I can still picture his bloody, lifeless body on the compound waterfall that’s mounted below. It causes nausea to crawl up my throat.
“You ungrateful brat, how dare you show up here?!” A lady with a bulb hairstyle just like mine, fair and pale skin tone just like mine, height a little taller than mine, marched up to me with obvious fury written all over her face.
I stand still waiting for the slap that always stings. I never expected her to change eitherway–I don’t want anyone in this mansion changing.
The sound comes before the sting registers, and my head is harshly forced to the side. Aish, it still hurts, regardless of how much I prepared for it.
“Get her out now!” She yells at my face, her face red from anger, but the guard dare not try to lay their hands on me.
My chest feels tight. If she’s pained about my presence how should I feel about returning to the same place that murdered my father?
“What are you waiting for?”
“I’m here on special demands, were you not informed?” My lips itches to a smirk, she can slap me all she wants, I’m not the little girl that would hide in the corner, hug myself and sob.
I take a step closer to her, so our faces are inches apart. “I’m guessing your relationship ain’t as strong as it is on screen? Why? Are you afraid I am here to snatch him away?”
She raises her again, and I square myself up for another slap.
“Ms. Côté, the Master is seeking your presence in his office, now.” A guard intercepts, stretching out his hands to guide me. If only he knows how much I knew this mansion.
I oblige with a nod, a spark of excitement flares in me at the sight of my childhood bully, the almighty Chloe Martin, soon to be the next First Lady of the Bouchard family. For the first time, I walk past her, without shedding a tear.
That same spark fades as I ascend the grand staircase. By the time, I am standng before the tall wooden doors, my heart had begins racing. The few happy moments I had in this mansion collapsed all at once.
He was my savior, from Chloe, who always found pleasure in bullying me, the first lady of the mansion who always made me her slave because my father was one of their guards, and from the First Master’s sexual approaches, despite he was five times my age.
He would hide me in his room, pat me to sleep, and keep me away from his parents, one time, he had stood up to his father, yelling at him that he was wrong making sexual advances to a kid; he had even threatened to get him arrested if he continued harrasing me. He was a safe space, and eventually my heart began to flutter for him. I was still young at that time, but I knew what a crush was. I was no fool. I had crush on him.
“Ma’am, you can go in.” The guard opens the door slightly for me to walk in. I swallow the burning ball in my throat, stopping by the shut door behind me as I stared at the figure standing by his long wooden desk, eyes on the file in his hand. Ethan Bouchard.
He lookes alluring as always. His hair is no longer tied in a bun, instead it's sleaked back; he looks more handsome, though, but at the same time, he seems more unapproachable than before.
“Why are you back here?”
His deep voice is the last thing to make me realize that the crush is still there, that little excitement that blooms immediately, I throw my gaze away…just like ten years ago. It's more complicated this time, he has someone by his side now, and I...I'm here to hurt him.
“You hired me.”
He shut the file, to the extent that the harsh sound makes me flinch. He finally lifts his head to meet my gaze. My body shivers from shame; not only did I make myself look like his fiancée, but I went against my word from ten years ago.
I slid some strand of my hair behind my ear, squeezing my bag with my other hand.
“Don’t play fool with me, Alexa Côté. You applied for this job, what’s your mission?”
Everything freezes at that moment; my heart beating drums in the confines of my chest. I have to act normal, I need to be normal. He’s one of the hardest people to go through. If I need to remain in this house and find my father’s murderer, I need him to not know that I have a mission.
“If you have nothing to say, then leave.”
“I just need money.” I begin, and it seems to be working, because he doesn't try to call the guards to kick me out.
So I take a step forward, avoiding closing the distance between us.
“My mum and I are stranded. I made other applications, but I never got one.” Lies. “I thought since I’m familiar, I would be able to secure the PA position, and I saw the pay was good enough to take care of my mother also, so, I applied.”
Ethan squints his eyes and tilts his head. I try to keep eye contact this time, hoping my response is convincing enough.
The door burst open, and Chloe march in.
“She can’t work anywhere in the Mansion, Ethan, you know that. Fire her immediately, if your parents hears of this, he would be provoked and the first lady-” She pauses, shoots me a bad eye, then walks past me.
My chest tightens as she rests her cheek on his chest, hugging him by the waist, and she
whines.
“Call the guards and kick her out, Ethan,”
Ethan and I keeps eye contact, and I can only hope he doesn’t reject me. My heart is already shattering into a thousand pieces.
Please just let me in for the sake of our past.
Alexa I had downed the glass of champagne in one go, ignoring the bitter sensation that hit my throat immediately. I had other questions, like what does he mean, what are we doing next? Won’t his father discover his betrayal soon? But instead, I stood to my feet, set to leave as soon as I could, but his cold hands gripped my hand. “From now on, we need to trust each other, Alexa; it’s us now. Just us.” He was up to his feet, towering over me. “Tomorrow, we are going to send your mum out of the country, to somewhere she can lie low, until the heat falls.” No. I shook my head, finally pulling my hand away from his hold. My mother is my only family standing. I can’t have her stay far away. What if something bad happens? No, I want to be there for her, always. “We can have her lie low here.” In fact, we have been lying low. But Ethan didn’t agree as he shook his head. “I will have my men look after her and send us reports of her well-being every night, but her staying back here is d
Alexa I felt like I was walking on thin ice. The quietness was itching me, I mean the quietness after he said those words. I shouldn’t dig deep into the meaning. We couldn’t be anything more than we are now, and that settled it. “The voting count will begin soon. Come to my room once you are done/.” I practically choked on my sandwich. But he wasn’t fazed; he continued walking away like he knew what he had caused and was expecting that reaction from me. But why his room of all places? There are a lot of rooms where we could sit comfortably, at a reasonable distance, and watch the election together. I remember his room so well, yeah, it was enough for us to have a distance, but a room is a room, and with all these subtle hints, we are not the usual acting brother and sister anymore. I chugged down the whole cup of orange juice. My nervousness about being in the same room with Ethan is huge, but my anxiety about Jeffery Thomson winning this election is greater after last night's mee
AlexaThe camera lights flashed like lightning. At that moment, I could have celebrated lightning striking down on me. I would join my father faster, ask why he chose to leave us earlier, and ask why these people hate him so much. I knew my father like the back of my hand. He was a good man. Never holding grudges. You slap him, and he would turn his other cheek for you to repeat your violence. He was soft-hearted. But the Bouchards…why…why did they do this to him? Accusing my father of trying to rape the first lady, my father could barely hurt a fly. I didn't believe them. I could never believe anyone in that house, not even Ethan, not when it comes to my family. And then bringing reporters, because I am certain they had the power to hold them away if they truly wanted to do just paying respect to my late father but no, they brought those reporters along to do what? Embarrass us more? What did we ever do to them, other than serve them? “Mrs. Côté, are you aware that your husband trie
Alexa The meeting stretched out for an hour, perhaps some minutes in addition, and I sat there only able to put one or two things together. I could barely contribute. How could I when I was still in shock? The meeting door clicked open, and my eyes widened at the figure that walked in. Well, I’m not supposed to be shocked when Ethan already mentioned backing another leader of the parliament. But he never mentioned that the said candidate was the worst enemy of Bouchard. It is well known by the whole country, even, that the Thomson family disliked the Bouchards. They have been rivals in business, and Jeffwery Thompson has always been compared to Ethan since they were little. So the history states, rivals seen in different schools, they had competitions, both representing their schools, and everyone could tell how much they loathed each other. Those are the words from people, the news highlights, and the media. It was the first time I had ever seen them in space. Heck, it was the firs
Alexa I regret not apologizing to my mother. I do regret walking out on her like that. I still do feel betrayed. I went on for years thinking I accomplished everything all by myself. The scholarships, my side jobs, they were all interfered with by an external influence, and she knew about it. It feels like she thinks I just hate the Bouchards for no reason. Yes, Ethan might be an exception; it doesn’t change the fact that we can barely trust anyone. It is how it’s so easy for her to face the son of the parents who ruined her husband's life. She literally accepted him with open arms, acting like he was a long-gone family member that just returned. My mother has been kind. Both of my parents had their weaknesses that I don’t want to inherit. My chest tightened as I watched the city fall behind while Ethan drove us back. Mother hesitated when she tried hugging me; she eventually didn’t, and I didn’t try to do anything either. It felt like a line had been drawn between my mother and me,
EthanI never made it clear Alexa's mother to keep my sponsoring away from Alexa, but I hope she did. Alexa already hated my family she might think I am trying to silence her. And right now that she’s frozen after I shot her with the truth, I am beyond scared. Alexa seems like an egg slowly cracking, almost about to shatter and spill in my hands. “Come in, I just prepared lunch.” Alexa'a Mother gestured but my gaze remained on Alexa who’s expression I could barely read. She rarely had a straight face, and now she does, I can't help but be worried. The meal is set out on the table and Alexa was the first to dig in. Quiet, clearly not willing to speak to anyone. “I’m sorry I never got to say a proper appreciation. I’m ashamed actually” Alexa’s mother chuckled, not the kind that showed she was happy, perhaps a bit, but her eyes hung low, unable to meet my gaze. “And your parents-” The sound of metal smacking the wooden table echoed through the small dinning walls. Alexa…“I will pay
Ethan It was honestly the worst feeling I had ever felt in a long time, and when I mean in a long time, I mean since Aleander Côté, Alexa’s dad, died. Why are all strong emotions tied to Alexa? It’s crazy because I never thought I would be attracted to her. One minute, I saw her like a little sis
Ethan Something is wrong“Where are you going to, Ethan!” I ignore Chloe and get down the car. “Take her home, don’t let her out of the car till you are back at the house.” I order the driver, before walking back to the hall, except this time, I don't gett inside the hall, instead I pull out my p
Alexa “She’s my date” My heart literally jumps when his hands wraps around my fnger, and pulls me away from behind Ethan. But it does calm everyone down and diverts their attention as he pulls me away from the crowd to the exit. I got my wish answered but at what cost? Because Ethan’s eyes is
Alexa My heart drops as Chloe walks in. All attention are on her, everyone gasping as she catwalks her way in with guards behind and her father-Ben Martin beside her. The same people that were awed by her, frowned as they turn to me, their eyes all laying their disgust. I'm not sure everyone her
