Mag-log inAzure's POV
Rolling my neck, I stepped into the lab, seeing all of my scientists working diligently on our newest product.
“Mr. Blackwood,” one of our oldest employees, Douglas, smiles, handing me a white lab coat. “Are you here to test out the new gear?”
I nodded with a smile, “Won’t know if it’s effective if I don’t.”
He chuckles nervously, “It still baffles me that you choose to be your own product tester.”
I shrug, a sly smirk spreading on my lips, “It still baffles me that more CEO’s aren’t. Is the facility ready for me?”
“Always,” Douglas presses a finger against the keypad, and it illuminates green, allowing us entry. Along the walls are prototypes for my newest bullet-proof compression shirts.
I came up with a design that would be comfortable for combat, as well as light and flexible for the average soldier. But more importantly, it’s designed to eliminate the effects of silver bullets.
“Have we tested the material on larger guns?”
“Nothing above thirty-nine millimeters, sir,” I placed my finger against the next keypad, watching as it flashed green, and then unlocking a small door. Inside sat the very first finalized design for our new line called Azure.
Finnick, my cofounder and best friend, called me a arrogant fool for naming our newest product after myself, but I’ll be damned if the world doesn’t know the name of the man who will save countless lives.
I stripped out of my suit jacket and button down, quickly pulling the flexible material over my body. It hugged me like a second skin without feeling as though I was being smothered.
“Start with a forty-five today.”
Douglas’s eyes grew wide, “Sir, that’s not been tested yet.”
“Then make sure you take notes,” I gave him my back as I pressed my finger against another scanner. “My job is to find limits and create something that goes beyond them.”
The testing area door slid open, and I stepped inside, stretching as the machines whirled to life. Finnick created an arena type setting for me to test our product.
Various robots were set up throughout the arena, able to move just as humans would. They were equipped with turrets that shot various bullet sizes, and obstacles that mirrored what you might encounter out in the real world.
It was a marvelous creation.
“Testing begins in three minutes,” Douglas’s voice called out through an intercom system.
‘You certainly love taking risks, Azure,’ Nero snickers in my head.
‘And you don’t?’ I snort, knowing damn well we’re on the same page.
Nero and I run a tight ship. Here at Blackwood INC as well as back in our pack. As the Alpha of Blackwood, one of the largest wolf packs on the West coast, we have to.
Nearly two thousand members rely on us to ensure that our kind is safe, and without the bond that we share, that simply wouldn’t be possible.
“Fifteen seconds sir,” a female voice comes through the line.
‘Sure you don’t want to back out,’ Nero challenges, but he knows better.
I’d rather be shot through the gut by a forty-five mm bullet than accept defeat.
‘You sound scared.’
‘You seem to have forgotten who I am,’ Nero pushes to the forefront of my mind, sharing my consciousness.
The robots begin moving, and we dash towards the simulated forest.
A bullet whizzes by my face, smashing into a tree with a loud, splintering sound.
“Az,” Finnick’s voice crackles through the arena. “I need to speak with you.”
“Not now,” I shout, irritated by the interruption, and sprinting away from one of the robots chasing me.
“It’s important,” he sounds annoyed, which is typical. As my Beta, he’s used to my personality. He also knows when I’m in here, he’s supposed to leave me the hell alone.
“I’m not sure if you have gone blind since this morning, but,” I roll, smacking my shoulder into a tree to avoid another shot. “But I’m testing a product which means you should be off doing something more important than bothering me.”
“The clinic called,” he hissed through the speaker, and my body froze.
Did the most recent implant work?
A bullet spun through the air, and I watched it in slow motion, spiraling until it smacked into my chest. My body flew back ten feet, skidding across the ground.
Heavy breaths caused my chest to heave, and I glanced down, a wicked grin spreading on my face.
The shirt wasn’t even torn.
‘Our sternum is cracked, you asshat,’ Nero snarled, but I was too busy gleaming. The pain didn’t even register as I climbed back onto my feet, running towards the initial impact. Sitting on the ground was a crushed bullet.
Picking it up, I rubbed my fingers over the silver, ignoring the burning of my skin.
“We did it,” I held up the bullet, knowing that every scientist working for me was watching this display. “We fucking did it.”
Using the back of my hand, I swiped the sweat from my hairline, heading back into the prep room.
Finnick was standing there with his arms over his chest, “You are an agitating human.”
I tossed the bullet towards him, watching his face scrunch up with pain when he caught it, “Another failure?” I peeled the prototype from my body, hanging it up for inspection before stepping over to the mirror and taking in the damage on my chest.
My black hair was a mess, and dried blood clung to my forehead. A single drip had managed to almost pass my eyebrow, getting into my eyes.
Nero was slacking.
The gray color appeared lighter when I was excited, and right now, I am on top of the fucking world.
Bright purple bloomed over the center of my chest, with almost black right over where the bone sat beneath the skin.
I can barely feel it now. By tomorrow, you wouldn’t even be able to tell I’d been shot.
“You could call it that,” he chewed his bottom lip.
“Spit it out,” I snarled, growing impatient.
“There was a mix-up with your sperm,” Finnick stared at my chest with wide eyes. “Seems that your baby juice was mixed with some random chick’s egg. They want you to go down to the clinic and deal with the legalities.”
“Why does it matter?” I buttoned up my shirt. “Every attempt prior to now has failed with the screened donors. What makes this one different?”
Nero perked up at the thought of having a pup. I was turning thirty this year, and the pack was breathing down my neck to produce an heir for Blackwood. I was already eight by the time my father turned thirty, yet I have only just begun to consider the idea of a pup through a surrogate.
But without a mate, and no desire to take in a chosen one, I’d resorted to a screened surrogate, much to the dismay of my family.
“She’s human.”
Shit.
Erin's POV“Steal?” I pressed my back against the stainless-steel wall opposite of Creighton King. His dark, beady eyes haven’t strayed from mine, and I know this is his typical scare tactic. He’s well known for using intimidation as a tool for business, and I’d be lying if I said it didn’t work. There was something about him that made my skin crawl in a way that you felt deeper than the surface.Creighton’s face doesn’t shift. There’s no grin any longer, no frown, not even indifference…. “Let me tell you something, Erin Connolley,” I don’t miss the shift in his tone while saying my married name, but I don’t let it show on my face.I just needed to focus on getting through this meeting, and then we’ll be on the home stretch. After the paternity results come in, I’m sure they’ll be leaked to the press, which will likely create a shitstorm of stories. I’ll have to reach out to Andrea and allow her a personal interview. It’s the least I could do after all but abandoning my duties as a jo
Azure's POVFinn never responded to my last message. He must have fallen asleep again.I fell back against my chair, nearly knocking over the telescope in the process. He only had a few weeks before….“Fuck,” I snarl, ripping at my hair. Strands tear from my scalp, but I can’t find it within me to care. I keep trying to uphold this image that I’m not dying on the inside. I keep telling myself that I can figure it out, and do whatever the hell needs to be done to ensure Finn gets treatment, Erin stays safe, and Enzo doesn’t lose himself along the way, and yet… Everyone seems to be slipping through my fingertips like sand.I can’t save anyone…Leaning forward, I try to distract myself. This telescope cost a pretty penny, but as Erin’s face came into view, every cent was worth it.She looks stunning as always, glowing. Fucking glowing carrying my pup.‘Our pup.’ ‘Get out of here. You’re stealing her time later.’‘Jealous much?’ Nero snickers.I’d roll my eyes, but that would mean I lost
Erin's POV“This won’t hurt the baby, right?” My palms were sweating as I tapped my fingers against my thigh nervously. The nurse smiled, not pausing to stop pulling out supplies, “Modern medicine has come a long way. We just draw from your arm now.”Cecelia instructed that Az and I arrive separately just in case we were being followed by anyone pertaining to Rowan. I’m not even sure that I care anymore about being seen. At first, I thought the backlash would destroy my case, but as time has passed, my desire to focus on more important things has won out over my desire to destroy Rowan. And besides, I know the men in my life well enough to know that Rowan will never get off scotch free for what he’s done to me.“You seem happy,” the nurse startles me, looping a band around my upper arm.“For the first time in a very long time, I am.”“Good,” she lined up the needle, counting to three before poking me, “Bringing a child into the world is a blessing, no matter who the father is…. All do
Finn's POV“What the hell did you need these for?” Enzo drops my laptop bag onto my lap, brow arched. “Aren’t you supposed to be ‘taking it easy’?”He rolled his eyes while saying that, making me chuckle.“I haven’t quit taking it easy, asshole,” I muttered, knowing we were both just poking fun.The truth was, I was dying in here. Figuratively and literally. It’s not only infuriating, but the mental toll is exhausting. My legs are restless while being too weak to walk more than a few minutes. My mind is running a million miles a minute, but I’m so god damn exhausted, I just want to sleep, and the sedation... A shiver rolls through my body.Please... Not today. The quiet in my head is something I had entirely forgotten existed. Nash’s presence was something I’d grown used to. Even in his silence, I could feel him. That emptiness… It’s too much sometimes.“So, what’d you need those for?” Enzo nods towards the laptop case, a few loose strands of hair falling over his forehead before he s
Azure's POVErin’s breath catches in her throat when I grind my hips forward, allowing her to feel exactly what she’s doing to me.My fingers trail along her outer thighs, and I watch the dramatic shift in her breathing. Her chest rises and falls rapidly. It’s been too long since I’ve been in this position. We’ve been busy, tired, and quite frankly; Stressed the fuck out, but right now, I want to take my time and savor this moment.“Az,” Erin’s voice is breathy, and the sound goes straight to my dick.Nero has been restless lately, and I thought it had everything to do with Finn and Nash, but as Erin grows increasingly more aroused; I pick up the sweet scent of pheromones. She must have been giving off microdoses in the short time that we’ve spent together, but right now…. Fuuuuuuck. I need a taste. No, I need to drown and get drunk on that scent. If I die between her legs, just know that I died the happiest fucking man on the planet.“Have I ever told you how absolutely perfect you a
Erin's POV“This should be the other way around,” Az mutters around a spoonful of cherry cordial ice cream. According to Enzo, that is his favorite, and I was a tad nervous that he was steering me in the wrong direction intentionally, but given the fact that Azure's eating it without complaint; I'll trust him this time.“I’m enjoying this,” I’m exhausted down to my bones, but spending time with just Az feels nice. I can’t remember the last time we just sat down and talked. With everything that has been happening recently, it feels like we’re an old married couple in the thick of life and not… Freshly in love. That thought has always terrified me. The idea of complacency, which is sort of hilarious considering that’s all my relationship with Rowan ever was.Complacent.“Fine,” he beckons me towards him with his index finger, “But you’ll have to let me repay you,” his lips taste like cherries and chocolate and I linger, swiping my tongue at the corner.“Can I not just take care of my hu
Erin's POV“Come on,” I dangle the keys in front of Finn. “We’re going on a late-night adventure.”Finn has been pacing, apologizing, and pacing some more for the last few hours. Every time he sits down, it’s like his mind goes stagnant, and he has to move to keep his thoughts from dragging him und
Finn's POV‘Change of plans. Portland General.’ I link Enzo, trying to calm my racing heart.‘Be there in fifteen,’ his voice is laced with frustration. ‘City is a pain in the dick to patrol.’ I don’t bother with a response.“Finn,” my name falls from Erin’s lips in a plea, and if it doesn’t send
Erin's POVSilence. The air in the room instantly felt stale… stagnant as my eyes slowly shifted from Enzo’s face, to Azure’s, and then…. Finn’s.His green eyes were wide and slowly blinking as he stared at Enzo, but he really wasn’t staring at him as much as through him.And then; He laughed.“No
Erin's POVCecelia pins him with a glare that sent shivers down my spine, “If you continue to be unprofessional, I will file a notion for all further ‘in-person’ attempts to rattle my client to cease. Mrs. Connolley is early, and considering your short notice, you should be grateful for her presenc
