LOGIN"She's choking!" I heard someone scream.
I coughed violently, my entire body jerking as water forced its way out of my mouth. My lungs burned like someone had set them on fire. “Breathe,” a voice said. “Stay with me.” I sucked in a sharp breath, only to choke again, more water spilling out as I gasped. “Fuck…” I wheezed, clutching at the sand beneath me. I was alive. I blinked rapidly, my vision spinning. Everything started to come into focus. There were people hovering around me… too many faces. Why were there so many people? My head hurts. I covered my face. “Hey, give her some space,” the same voice snapped. A shadow moved in front of me, blocking out most of the faces. “Back up!” he screamed at them. The crowd started to scatter. Good. Because if one more person stared at me like I was some kind of roadside accident, I was going to lose my shit. I coughed again, wiping my mouth with the back of my hand. I finally looked up. I swallowed. He was not what I expected. Tall. Broad shoulders. Dark hair that looked slightly messy, like he couldn’t be stressed about it. He crouched in front of me as his brown eyes roamed my body. “Are you okay?” I nodded. “Someone you can call?” I almost laughed at that. I couldn’t call Ronan, of course. The only person I had left to call was Maya and yeah, she would have answered if only we weren't quarrelling. We usually had some misunderstandings but this last one? It had been going on for two months. So, I couldn't call her. I didn't know if that decision came from pride or shame. Whatever. I remembered the day we fought just as clearly as daylight. “You are being stupid, Lyra.” “Excuse me?” “I’m serious. That guy is just using you, and you are letting him.” “Using me? Maya, that’s wild,” I had argued. “Just because you’ve been used and dumped your whole life doesn’t mean he would do the same with me.” Yeah, that was our last discussion and she never called me again. “You can leave,” I said after a while. “I’d be fine, really.” How else would I tell him that I had someone and I pushed her away for a man who just… I clenched my jaw. He stood and offered me his hand. “You are stuck with me.” I laughed. “I don’t even know you.” His eyes narrowed, hurt flashing through his eyes for a moment. “I’m Victor….” Wait… I looked at him properly this time. “Oh shit,” I said. “You’re Ronan’s friend?” He smiled. I knew the both of them were entirely separate beings but then a twinge of hurt spread across my chest as it reminded me of Ronan again. Before I could ask anything else because I had lots of them, he gestured toward the packing area. “Let’s go,” he murmured. “You need to get out of these wet clothes before you catch something” “I’m f…” “Don’t dare tell me that you are fine again,” he leaned closer. “Can’t you accept help for once?” I stiffened. Reluctantly, I had to get in his car. I was worried that I would get his car wet but then he told me not to worry about it. His car was as ridiculous as you’d expect. Sleek, expensive, probably worth more than my entire existence. I wasn’t really so close to Victor. Ronan never really introduced me to most of his friends, he only talked about them to me. I didn’t know he was this freaking rich. He drove me home and he allowed me to take a shower and gave me a loose gown that might probably be for his girlfriend or his sister. I didn’t ask because I didn’t want to hear the answer. I quickly put on the dress and went to join him downstairs. He was sitting down at the dining table, I joined him and he pushed a cup of juice to me. I shook my head. “Vodka?” He smiled and went to get it for me. “So,” he said as he took his seat. “You gonna tell me what really happened?” I stared out the window. “I slipped.” “Right.” I rolled my eyes. “What do you want me to say? That I dramatically ran into the ocean because my life is falling apart?” He shrugged. “That would be a start.” Damn him. I sighed. “Fine, I left Ronan’s house.” His hands tightened around the cup like he already knew what happened. “I’m sorry.” “About what?” “C’mon drop the act now,” he said, tilting his head. “He told me yesterday that he was going to propose to Elara. I guess he finally broke the news to you.” I looked away from him. “I knew you loved him.” I froze. “What…” I scoffed. “I…” He walked closer to me and my heart began to beat faster. He stopped in front of me, barely an inch between us now. He tucked a strand of hair behind my ears. “He’s a fool you know.” I frowned. “Ronan,” he said. “He’s a fool for not realizing the gem that he has with him.” My chest tightened as I took another sip of the vodka. I let out a breath. “You can stay here” My jaw dropped. “What?” “I know you need…” I shook my head. “No…I’m not doing that. I’m not relying on anyone again.” “Who said anything about relying?” he asked, his lips curving up. “You’ll pay rent.”Elara:Silence settled over our table. Not the comfortable kind. The awkward kind. The kind that somehow kept growing louder the longer nobody spoke. It was Mia who finally broke it. Her eyes kept moving between Christine and me, clearly trying to figure out what was happening."So..." She pointed between us. "You two know each other?"Christine smiled. A smug, confident smile. "She's smart. I like her."I rolled my eyes. Nobody cared who Christine liked."We grew up together." I answered before taking another sip of my drink. "Same high school. Same college. My biggest headache." My tone carried years of bitterness. Christine simply nodded, completely unbothered. "The mistress." I deliberately added the title just to mock her.She laughed. "Not for long." She crossed one leg over the other. "Victor has been dying to see me. He's been blowing up my phone nonstop." As if she needed proof, she unlocked her phone and shoved the call history toward me.Missed calls. Messages. Everything.
Elara:Ronan had just left for the office. Of course, with the little plan I'd carefully put together, he had asked for my permission first.I'd managed to get Margaret, his mother, firmly on my side, and now every decision he made somehow involved asking me first."Call me if you want me to come back." He leaned down and kissed my forehead.I smiled sweetly before nodding. "I will." It was all an act. I never wanted Ronan away from me, especially not now that Lyra was running around pretending to be vulnerable and heartbroken. But… I needed a drink. I needed to clear my head before I completely lost it.The second the door closed behind him, I threw the blankets aside and jumped out of bed. Straight to the shower. My plan was finally working. After the fake hospital incident, after convincing everyone that I only had a few years left to live, Dad had insisted I move back into the family home.Exactly what I'd wanted. And naturally… Ronan refused to leave me alone. He'd practically mo
**“Calm down.” Sebastian immediately crouched in front of me. “I'll get you some water.”Without waiting for my response, he hurried into the kitchen while gently helping me settle onto the couch first.A minute later, he returned with a glass of cold water. He carefully handed it to me, making sure I had a proper grip before letting go. “Here.”“Thank you.” I took a few slow sips.Physically… I was sitting there with Sebastian. Mentally… I was somewhere else entirely. My thoughts were all over the place. There was a time… Not that long ago… When I truly believed marriage was my happily ever after.I believed Victor genuinely wanted me. Not because of a contract. Not because of a baby. Me.And when I found out I was pregnant… It only made me more certain.I honestly thought this was it. This was the family I'd always dreamed about.I'd even started planning ahead.Since I was convinced this baby was a girl, I'd already decided our next child would be a boy. Victor had laughed when I
Victor stared at me as though I'd completely lost my mind. He actually frowned before asking,“Lyra... are you feeling okay?”I almost laughed. “You read the letter, didn't you?” I folded my arms. “Aren't you supposed to be babysitting Sienna?” I scoffed. He simply shook his head. “Lyra...” He sighed as though I was being unreasonable. “Even if you wanted to end this relationship, you can't.” His voice remained calm. “You signed a contract. There are a lot of things involved.”“Oh?” I raised an eyebrow. “And you think I can't fight you in court? I can easily argue that I was forced into this marriage.” I was mostly joking. Mostly. But somewhere deep inside… A small part of me had actually started considering it.Victor chuckled. “Who's going to represent you?” He folded his arms confidently. “I never lose a case. This has to be a joke, right?”God… He was unbelievably confident.“I'm not coming back to your house, Victor.” I looked him straight in the eyes. “I won't keep letting Sienn
I panicked. Completely. I rushed around the room without thinking, dialing Dad's number with trembling fingers. The first time… He didn't answer. “Shit.” I started pacing back and forth. “Victor can't come here.” I whispered the words to myself as if saying them out loud would somehow stop him.I couldn't believe I'd broken Dad's one instruction. He'd specifically told me not to answer any calls until my phone had been checked. But, it was Ronan. For some reason, whenever it came to him, I always lost my ability to think rationally.“Fuck.” I dragged a hand through my hair. What was I supposed to do now? I walked back to the bed and grabbed my phone again.I quickly replied to Victor's message.‘Please don't come. I don't want to see you right now.’The reply came almost instantly.‘I'm already on my way. Nothing you say will change my mind.’I stared at the screen. Seriously? This was insane.A few seconds later, my phone rang again.Dad. I answered immediately. “I'm so sorry.” The a
Okay, I knew this had to be either my mother… Or the person she'd been speaking to last night.Still, after everything Dad had shown me today, I wasn't scared. Not even a little. So I simply ignored the message.I was just about to block the number when my phone rang again. Ronan. I hesitated for only a second before answering.“Thank God you picked up.” The relief in his voice was immediate. “Where are you? Are you alright?” He sounded genuinely worried. In fact, it sounded like he'd only started breathing properly after hearing my voice.I knew I shouldn't read too much into it. He was engaged. He was about to marry another woman. Still… A small part of me couldn't deny that it felt good knowing he was worried about me.“I'm fine.” I smiled faintly. “I promise, I'm okay.”“You left Victor a letter.” He let out a frustrated sigh. “I've never seen him like this before, Lyra.” There was a brief pause. “Could you please come home? Please.”“Have you read the letter?”“Yes, and—”“Then y
Victor left me to get ready. I didn’t think too much about the ring. Even though everything suddenly felt so real, I knew deep down this marriage wasn’t. Victor was just helping me out of kindness. He had sent a stylist to do my makeup and help me dress. She brought several gowns for me to choose f
Fuck. It was embarrassing. On the floor. On my butt. Looking like absolute trash in front of the other woman. Even if Ronan suddenly changed his mind, he wouldn’t dare now. Not with how I looked compared to Elara. I felt like her makeup artist while she was the main character. It hurt. So much.Tea
I didn’t think Victor actually meant what he said. That he would help me get back at his friend. It didn’t make sense.I rolled out of bed and dragged myself to the bathroom, brushing my teeth like a zombie before crawling back under the sheets. My phone was in my hand before I even realized it.I
Maya was right. I just couldn’t take this and I needed to make a plan but before I had even thought of one, I had already drowned four bottles of alcohol and still thinking, ‘yeah, one more might fix this.’Maya had left after she had a call from her current boyfriend. She didn’t stay long enough f
