Chapter 9

Autor: Perfect Timing
My lawyer laid the reasoning out for Grayson plainly.

"I'm not canceling the policies." Grayson's expression hardened back into stubbornness, edged now with a kind of reckless defiance. "I earned that money. I get to decide what to do with it."

That didn't surprise me at all.

My lawyer turned to another page in the agreement.

"Mr. Redding, regarding your recent use of marital assets to purchase insurance, we've given it full consideration and drafted the corresponding clause."

Grayson frown

"I'm sorry... I know I was wrong..."Tears welled in Grayson's eyes."I lost my mind, I don't deserve you... Give me one more chance, just one..."He stumbled over his words, apologizing and pleading, groveling as low as he could go.It was an ugly, pitiful scene.Grayson had always longed for a real family. As a child, his parents had worked away from home year-round, and his grandmother had raised him. She wasn't the doting type—too lazy to cook in the summer heat, she'd feed him leftovers that had already gone bad. After we got married, he'd always wanted a child of his own.The more a childhood lacked warmth, the harder a person tried to make up for it once they had their own family. He'd been standing right at the threshold of the life he'd always dreamed of, and in the end, he'd wrecked it with his selfish actions.Watching him fall apart like this, wracked with regret, I understood clearly just how much pain he was in."Since you don't want to sign the agreement, we'l

Grayson grabbed the page, his eyes racing over it.When his gaze reached the bottom of the page

A month had passed since that meeting with Vanessa. My lawyer arranged for Grayson and me to meet and sign the divorce agreement. We met in a conference room at the law firm.Grayson showed up late, his face dark as storm clouds when he walked through the door.My lawyer slid the prepared agreement across the table to him and said politely, "Mr. Redding, please take a look."Grayson picked up the document, flipped through it in a cursory glance, and closed it."I'm not satisfied with this agreement."His expression was openly resistant.I looked up at him, and all I could feel was how absurd this was.Once we divorced, he'd be free to openly ride off into the sunset with Vanessa.Who exactly was this reluctant act for?Or did he still want to keep up appearances of a respectable marriage while playing the winner who got to have it both ways?I couldn't come up with any other explanation. I didn't understand him anymore. My lawyer kept his composure, asking evenly, "Which p

In the days leading up to the divorce, work, prenatal checkups, and meetings with my lawyer kept my life moving forward in an orderly rhythm.I already had my hands full, and there was no room left to spare a thought for people and things that no longer mattered to me.One evening, my friend Sophie Langston called just to chat. Her voice was as bright and breezy as ever. "Hey, is Grayson switching careers or something?"I paused for a second, then quickly guessed where this was going."What do you mean?""He's been posting a ton of insurance stuff on his feed lately—coverage plans, wealth transfer, all analyzed like he really knows his stuff."Grayson wasn't the type to post much. In all the years I'd known him, the first thing I ever saw him post was our wedding announcement.Even on the rare occasion he posted something, he'd set it to disappear after three days.I pulled up his feed, and sure enough, it was exactly like Sophie said. In just the past two weeks, he'd put up o

Grayson's call came that evening."Have you cooled off yet?" His tone was cold. That was his first question—which meant he still hadn't figured out I had no intention of going back to that house we'd shared."I've been perfectly calm the whole time."I knew exactly what I was doing."Say whatever you want. The company's leadership found out about what happened today, and they want an explanation." His tone left no room for argument. "You're going to write an apology letter and clear Vanessa's name."I found the whole thing absurd."I won't. Is there anything else? If not, I'm hanging up.""Denise, Vanessa is sensitive and fragile on the inside. What you said today already hurt her—you're the one who started this!" His voice rose. "Are you only going to be satisfied once she's forced to quit her job? Do you have any idea how much damage a few careless words can do to someone's years of hard work?"And what about the damage done to me?I'd worked so hard at this marriage, tried

Grayson's whole body jolted, his eyes going wide."What did you say? Divorce?"Vanessa's crying cut off instantly, and she stared at me in shock. Our commotion had already drawn the attention of plenty of employees outside the office. Several people were craning their necks to look our way.I held his gaze, steady. "Yes. I want a divorce.""I won't agree to it." Panic flashed across Grayson's face.He grabbed my arm and started pulling me toward the door. "Let's go home and talk this through properly."I yanked my hand back. "Go ahead and comfort her. My lawyer will be in touch."Over by Vanessa, a few people who looked like managers had come over to her side. She shot Grayson a pleading look.Grayson sighed and let go of my hand."I'm not agreeing to a divorce, no matter what. Go cool off for now."With that, he turned and walked back toward her.A bitter feeling spread through my chest. I knew, without a doubt, that I'd made the right call.Once I got home, I packed a ba
