Chapter 1

In the dim light, I stared blankly at the ring of teeth marks on Andy Croft’s shoulder.

Fresh red scratches from a woman’s nails ran down Andy’s back.

It hurt to look at them.

Just then, the phone on the nightstand lit up. I instinctively glanced over.

A flood of photos appeared in a message thread from someone saved as “Rach”.

In front of the crystal-clear waters of the Celestial Isles, Andy had an arm around Rachel Walser’s shoulders. He was grinning without a care in the world.

I remembered the day Andy proposed to me. He had dropped to one knee on the beach and said, “Olivia, when I can afford it, I’ll give you a grand proposal ceremony again in the Celestial Isles.”

Three years had passed since then.

I scrolled through the photos. Each one sent a fresh stab of pain through my chest.

Three months earlier, when I was running a free medical outreach clinic in a remote mountain community, Andy was embracing and kissing Rachel beneath the snow-covered peaks of Wintermere.

I remembered how fiercely the blizzard had raged that night.

I had braved the freezing cold and climbed halfway up the mountain to a communications tower just to call and tell him I was safe.

With nothing but a lightweight shell jacket to protect me, my fingers had gone completely numb.

His belated text finally arrived well after midnight.

“Olivia, I’m away on business. The reception here is terrible.”

Every landmark in those photos was a place we had once pinned together on the map on our phones.

Yet, he had taken another woman to every destination we had dreamed of visiting together.

By the time I reached the final photo, the last ounce of my strength seemed to leave my body.

In front of the floor-to-ceiling windows, Andy stood in a bathrobe with Rachel wrapped in his arms.

Reflected in the mirror behind them was our engagement portrait hanging on the wall.

I spotted the date. My eyes immediately began to burn.

December 5.

That was the day I had miscarried from sheer exhaustion and lay in a hospital bed after undergoing a D&C.

Through the phone, Andy’s voice had been thick with tears.

“Oli, I’m so sorry. I couldn’t be by your side when you needed me the most.”

However, he had been right across town and sleeping with his ex-girlfriend in our home.

I clapped a hand over my mouth, but my tears caught in my throat and sent me into a fit of coughing.

Andy suddenly rolled over and habitually wrapped an arm around me.

A wave of nausea surged through me.

I instinctively tried to pull free from his embrace.

His breath reeked of alcohol. He murmured drowsily, “Rach, stop.”

My struggling hand froze.

Andy’s hand rested on my waist. His thumb absently brushed over my lower abdomen.

Ever since the D&C, the gesture had become a habit.

It was just like all those countless nights when he had held me as we fell asleep.

My fingertips grazed the scars along his arm.

I closed my eyes as tears slipped from the corners.

The memory of Andy carrying me out of the burning building was still painfully vivid.

But deep down, I knew there was no going back for us.

In the darkness, my phone vibrated with a new message.

“This is wonderful news, Olivia! It would be our honor to have someone of your extraordinary gifts join us. It gives us hope that your rare healing legacy will live on. We’ll send a team to Southvale to pick you up three days later.”

“As for Rachel, she received a lengthy prison sentence. From what I heard, she’ll probably be behind bars for close to a decade. I can’t say I feel sorry for her. She finally got what was coming to her and paid for everything she did.”I did not even look up as I continued sipping the tonic. In the end, Rachel had brought it all upon herself. After swallowing the final spoonful of tonic, I asked softly, “What about the bad news?”A look of annoyance crossed Joseph’s face.“Ever since you returned to Mount Hawthorne, that cheating piece of trash has been camping outside the estate. I tried several times to send him away, but Dr. Voss stopped me. He said this is something you need to face and put behind you yourself. Andy showed up again just now, demanding to see you. I kicked him out, but he still refuses to leave. He should’ve thought of that before he betrayed you.”I set the empty bowl aside and said softly, “Got it.”For three days, a man dressed in black waited outside the

Rachel looked around and realized there was no coming back. She collapsed to the floor and cried out in despair, “Yes, I did it! Why should Olivia get to have a respectable career? Why does she get to stand above everyone and receive their admiration? I wanted to destroy her. I wanted her life to become just as miserable as mine! I wanted to leave her with no way out.”Andy hauled Rachel to her feet. “Rachel, you’re pure evil!”Slap!“I never imagined you were such a rotten, despicable wretch!”Five bright red finger marks appeared across Rachel’s cheek. When Andy turned to me, his eyes were filled with guilt.“Olivia, I had no idea. I’m sorry. I never knew Rachel would lie about you or set you up.”Andy tried to approach me, but Joseph immediately stepped between us.“Stay away from her. No one is buying this remorseful act.”Seeing that, Rachel wiped the tears from her eyes with the back of her hand and sneered.“Andy, who are you trying to fool with this devoted-fiance

Andy yanked his arm free from Rachel’s grasp. His brow furrowed tightly. In the past, the sight of Rachel in tears would have softened him instantly. At that moment, however, he felt nothing but disgust.“Tell me the truth. Who is the father?”When Rachel refused to speak, Joseph called out toward the door. “You can come in now.”The door opened and a heavyset man with a fleshy face stepped into the room. The moment Rachel saw him, terror took hold of her.She stumbled backward. Her voice was breaking as she said, “Stay away from me! Don’t come any closer! I’ll get you the money. I promise!”Andy stared at the man in shock.“Aren’t you Rachel’s cousin? Wait, have you been lying to me this whole time?”The man let out a contemptuous snort. “Oh, I’m not her cousin. We made that up so she could get close to you. After all, you’ve been my cash cow.”The man unlocked his phone and pulled up a series of wedding portraits between him and Rachel.“Rachel and I have been married for

Joseph’s phone vibrated in his hand.He stepped in front of Rachel’s phone and held his screen close to the lens.In the video, Andy appeared seated across from Dr. Voss in his study.“Dr. Voss, I really love Olivia. I want to marry her. I promise that she’ll be the only woman I ever love. Please give us your blessing.”Joseph then pulled up photographs from Andy’s engagement to me from a few months earlier. “I think the truth is perfectly clear now. Olivia was never the other woman. Andy and Rachel were having an affair behind her back. Olivia is the one who was betrayed.”The comments immediately flooded in.[Dear god, everyone. We’ve been used as pawns.][So, she was the other woman all along, and she accused the fiancee first to cover her own tracks?][The audacity of that other woman! The man is just as spineless for standing by and letting her slandering his fiancee.]When Rachel saw the public turning against her, she panicked and lunged for the phone. “Give me my p

The livestream, which had been flooded with scrolling comments, came to an abrupt halt the instant the man in the midnight-blue overcoat appeared. Then the questions began pouring in again.[Who is that man?]Joseph Fry, my fellow apprentice, ignored everyone else in the room and walked straight toward me. “Olivia, I went to the address Dr. Voss gave me to pick you up. When I couldn’t find you, I started asking around. That’s how I learned what had happened.”He swept a cold gaze over Andy and Rachel in the room. “Do you have any idea who she is? Olivia is the heir to a bloodline of diagnostic empaths and one of the most gifted healers of her generation. You have no right to treat her this way.”Rachel clutched her abdomen. A flicker of panic crossed her eyes. “Do you expect us to believe you just because you showed up in some dramatic coat and started making wild accusations? How dare you lie about me? I lost my baby, and she’s the one who caused it! You’re obviously an act

The scalding water ran down my neck and left the skin red and burning.Andy did not even seem to notice. He gripped Rachel by the shoulders and tried patiently to calm her.“Rach, take it easy. I know. I know how much pain you are in right now.”Rachel, however, was not finished. She propped her phone on the bedside table and started a livestream.“Everyone, meet the so-called compassionate doctor you all keep praising.”Rachel shoved the camera close to my face, broadcasting me at my weakest and most disheveled. “My name is Rachel Walser, and I’m publicly accusing Dr. Olivia Alonzi of deliberately knocking me down and causing my miscarriage. She did this out of jealousy because she’s been secretly trying to steal my boyfriend.”She even uploaded a deceptively edited version of the security footage, keeping only the moment when I lost my temper and ordered her to leave. The camera angle made it appear as though I had pushed her to the floor.Within minutes, strangers had unc
