Chapter 3 The Man Who Waited for Me

Author: Southern Eucalyptus
Logan's eyes flickered away from mine.

"Abbie had a fight with her parents," he explained, stumbling over his words. "She is only staying at my place for a few days."

Logan's house had only three bedrooms. One belonged to his mother, and one belonged to Caleb.

That left only one room.

I gave a cold laugh. "Do not tell me you are planning to let Abbie stay in the bedroom we were supposed to share after the wedding."

"You are overthinking it," Logan said quickly. "She's only staying for two days. She'll definitely move out before the wedding."

I said nothing. I only looked at him coldly.

He stepped closer and lowered his voice, trying to coax me. "I promise nothing will happen between Abbie and me. In my eyes, she is practically one of the guys. I am not attracted to her."

The moment he said that, Abbie punched him lightly in the arm, pretending to be offended.

"Who are you not attracted to?" she snapped. "You big idiot. Other than that face of yours, what do you even have going for you?"

Logan dodged her with a grin. "You talk like you have seen everything else."

Abbie lifted her chin. "Who says I have not? Last time, when we went to the hot springs together…"

The two of them laughed and teased each other as if I was not even there.

Logan let her make a scene, and there was still a smile on his face.

I had seen moments like this countless times over the past seven years, and every single time, they had made me uncomfortable.

Before, I held myself back for Logan's sake.

Now, I had no reason to endure it.

"If you two want to flirt, go do it at your own house," I said coldly. "Don't bring it into mine."

Logan's face darkened. He was just about to speak when Abbie suddenly cried out.

She stumbled sideways as if someone had pushed her.

The scissors in her hand swept across my wedding dress.

In an instant, a long tear split through the delicate embroidery.

The air went still.

Abbie pouted and shoved the scissors into Logan's hand. "This is your fault. You pushed me."

Logan glanced at the ruined dress and waved it off like it was nothing. "It is just a tear. Just wear the old one if you have to. It will be fine."

The anger I had been holding back finally exploded.

I pointed toward the door and shouted, "Get out!"

"Julia…"

Before Logan could finish, I grabbed the sewing basket from the table and threw it at him. "I said get out!"

Abbie immediately pulled him away.

Once they were gone, the room fell silent.

I ran my fingers over the long tear in the fabric, and tears slipped down my face before I could stop them.

I took out my phone, snapped a photo, and sent it to him. 'I am sorry. The wedding outfit was ruined.'

A short while later, he sent back a photo.

A wedding outfit was spread neatly across a bed. The silk was a brilliant shade of blue, embroidered with butterflies that seemed to shimmer in the light.

His message followed right after.

'Silly girl. I had yours ready seven years ago.'

Three days later, the court hearing began. The day before, Leo had spoken to several of the respected elders in Silver Hollow. "Julia grew up in this village," he said. "I don't want anyone spreading rumors about her. Please come to the courthouse and listen for yourselves. That way, you can witness the truth with your own eyes." The elders agreed at once. The next morning, they put on their best clothes and went with us to the county courthouse. The hearing went smoothly. Every piece of evidence I submitted was solid. Abbie still tried to push all the blame onto Logan, while Logan insisted that the whole thing had been Abbie's idea. The judge did not care for their finger-pointing. The evidence was clear, and the facts were undeniable. The sentence was delivered that day. Logan was found guilty of assault and sentenced to two years and eight months in prison. Prison. Abbie received two years and six months for the same charge. The moment the gavel came down, Loga

I did not know who had bailed them out. Logan and Abbie both still had bruises and scratches from their fight at the sheriff's office. They looked miserable and embarrassed. Even so, Abbie was wearing the entire bridal set: silver crown, collar, chest piece, bracelets, rings, belt, and flower hairpins—all seven pieces were there. For one brief moment, everyone went completely silent. Then, the crowd exploded. "Is that not the silver belt Logan was supposed to give Julia last year?" "Not just the belt. That collar was from the year before that, and those bracelets were from the year before that." "My goodness. So, Logan had actually given the missing piece to Abbie each year?" "Seven years for seven pieces. Now, she has a complete set, which means Abbie was the true daughter-in-law of the Carneys all along." Logan's mother stared at the silver ornaments all over Abbie's body. Her eyes widened in disbelief. Her mouth opened and closed, but no words came out. I stood o

Early the next morning, Leo and I went to the county sheriff's office. Logan and Abbie had been held there overnight. Their faces were pale, their eyes shadowed, and all the arrogance they had shown yesterday was gone. The moment they saw me, both of them exploded. "Julia, you still have the nerve to show your face?" Logan slammed his cuffed hands against the table, making the metal chains rattle. "How long have you been fooling around with that man? You shameless, two-faced woman!" Abbie's voice turned sharp. "Exactly! No wonder you could not get married after seven years. A calculating woman like you deserves it." Logan breathed hard and glared at me. "Go withdraw the charges right now," he ordered. "Tell them you fell into the pit on your own and that it had nothing to do with us." He probably still thought I would obey him the way I used to. I gave him a cold glance, took out my phone, and played the recording from the night they pushed me into the pit. Logan's fa

  • His Promise Was Never Mine   Chapter 7 A Love That Waited Quietly

The wedding horns sounded again, and firecrackers burst loudly through the village. Leo took my hand and led me out of my family's house. The moment we reached the entrance of Silver Hollow, my mother's tears began to fall. "Julia…" I knew what she was afraid of. In Silver Hollow, when a daughter married someone from far away, she might not come home for months. Some women who married too far away did not see their families for years. My nose stung, and my eyes turned red. I had lived in this village for more than twenty years. Now that I was suddenly supposed to leave, unease rose inside me like a tide. But Leo did not lead me out of the village. Instead, he held my hand and walked slowly along the cobblestone road. We passed the Old Oak Shrine, the silver shop, and the ancient oak tree at the center of the village. After walking one full circle, we returned to where we had started. I looked at him in confusion. "What are you doing?" Leo pointed to a house nearby

Logan shook out the wrist Leo had nearly crushed, then forced a contemptuous smile onto his face. He glanced at the uniformed officers and spoke carelessly. "Julia, I know you are embarrassed because of the bridal set, but hiring actors to put on a show is a little much. I already told you I would make it up to you. Be good and send them away." I ignored him. Instead, I turned to the officer in charge and pointed at Logan and Abbie. "They were the ones who pushed me into the pit behind the hill last night. Then, they dumped more than a dozen snakes on me. I spent the entire night trying to climb out." The officer nodded. Then, he showed his badge and handcuffs. "Abbie Gardner, Logan Carney, you are both suspected of assault. Please cooperate with our investigation." Abbie froze for a second before rolling her eyes. "It was just a joke. Is this really necessary? Everyone in Silver Hollow has been scared by snakes before." Leo stood beside me, his voice calm and unhurried. "T

  • His Promise Was Never Mine   Chapter 5 He Came With the Police

I went back to my room to wash up and was just about to treat my wounds when my phone suddenly buzzed. Abbie had sent me a video. In the video, Logan and a group of his friends were sitting around the fire pit. Empty liquor bottles were scattered across the ground. One of his friends teased him, "Logan, you are getting married tomorrow. What if you have no experience and your bride is not satisfied?" Another man laughed. "Exactly. Shouldn't you find someone to practice with first?" Someone pointed straight at Abbie. "There's someone right here." Abbie raised an eyebrow and gave a careless smile. "Sure. I don't mind." Logan laughed and cursed under his breath. "What are you talking about? Abbie is like family to me. I am not interested in her." The moment those words left his mouth, she grabbed his hand and shoved it under her top. Logan froze. For a long moment, he did not pull his hand away. Abbie looked into the camera with a challenging smile. "Hurry up. Do you
