Chapter 5 He Came With the Police

作者: Southern Eucalyptus
I went back to my room to wash up and was just about to treat my wounds when my phone suddenly buzzed.

Abbie had sent me a video.

In the video, Logan and a group of his friends were sitting around the fire pit. Empty liquor bottles were scattered across the ground.

One of his friends teased him, "Logan, you are getting married tomorrow. What if you have no experience and your bride is not satisfied?"

Another man laughed. "Exactly. Shouldn't you find someone to practice with first?"

Someone pointed straight at Abbie. "There's someone right here."

Abbie raised an eyebrow and gave a careless smile. "Sure. I don't mind."

Logan laughed and cursed under his breath. "What are you talking about? Abbie is like family to me. I am not interested in her."

The moment those words left his mouth, she grabbed his hand and shoved it under her top.

Logan froze.

For a long moment, he did not pull his hand away.

Abbie looked into the camera with a challenging smile. "Hurry up. Do you still want to know what to do with your wife tomorrow night?"

The video ended there.

I turned off my phone, but my heart did not even ripple.

Seven years of love had already been worn away, piece by piece.

Whether they crossed another line or not no longer had anything to do with me.

At daybreak, I changed into my wedding dress and sat quietly in the main room, waiting for the groom's party to arrive.

A thin blast of wedding horns sounded outside.

Logan came to pick me up with only a few scattered friends behind him.

"Julia," he said, "I am here to marry you."

When he leaned closer, the smell of liquor and herbs rushed over me. There were also several suggestive red marks on his neck.

I avoided his outstretched hand and said coldly, "I told you already. The man I'm marrying is not you."

Logan looked at me with his usual contempt. "Stop making a scene. Other than me, who in Silver Hollow would still marry you?"

Before he could finish speaking, the village chief called from outside. "Julia, come out. It's time to inspect the bridal set."

Seven pieces of silver ornaments were arranged neatly in front of everyone. Each piece had been carefully crafted, but the silver crown in the center was the most breathtaking of all. Fine strands of silver had been woven into flowers, delicate and bright enough to show just how much care had gone into it.

Logan froze.

"I thought you said you did not want the bridal set," he asked. "Where did all this come from?"

Abbie immediately raised her voice, her face full of mockery. "She paid for it herself, obviously. The owner of the silver shop already said she spent every last bit of her savings on that silver crown. Preparing her own bridal set, eh? How desperate does a woman have to be?"

Logan seemed to relax at once.

Then he looked at me with a smug expression. "So you really have been dying to marry me? You even prepared all of this without telling anyone."

As he spoke, he reached out as if to pull me into his arms.

I shoved his hand away. "Get lost! Don't touch me with your filthy hands!"

Logan froze for a second. Then, somehow, he still thought I was only playing hard to get.

Just as he tried to step closer, another hand clamped firmly around his wrist.

Logan's face twisted in pain.

The man beside him turned to look at me, and the frost in his eyes softened. "I'm sorry. I'm late."

Logan stared at him suspiciously. "Who are you?"

Leo Howard's mouth curved into a cold smile. "Instead of worrying about that, you should start thinking about what you are going to tell the police."

Behind him, several officers pushed through the crowd and surrounded Logan and Abbie.

"You are both suspected of assault," one officer said. "You need to come with us."

Three days later, the court hearing began. The day before, Leo had spoken to several of the respected elders in Silver Hollow. "Julia grew up in this village," he said. "I don't want anyone spreading rumors about her. Please come to the courthouse and listen for yourselves. That way, you can witness the truth with your own eyes." The elders agreed at once. The next morning, they put on their best clothes and went with us to the county courthouse. The hearing went smoothly. Every piece of evidence I submitted was solid. Abbie still tried to push all the blame onto Logan, while Logan insisted that the whole thing had been Abbie's idea. The judge did not care for their finger-pointing. The evidence was clear, and the facts were undeniable. The sentence was delivered that day. Logan was found guilty of assault and sentenced to two years and eight months in prison. Prison. Abbie received two years and six months for the same charge. The moment the gavel came down, Loga

I did not know who had bailed them out. Logan and Abbie both still had bruises and scratches from their fight at the sheriff's office. They looked miserable and embarrassed. Even so, Abbie was wearing the entire bridal set: silver crown, collar, chest piece, bracelets, rings, belt, and flower hairpins—all seven pieces were there. For one brief moment, everyone went completely silent. Then, the crowd exploded. "Is that not the silver belt Logan was supposed to give Julia last year?" "Not just the belt. That collar was from the year before that, and those bracelets were from the year before that." "My goodness. So, Logan had actually given the missing piece to Abbie each year?" "Seven years for seven pieces. Now, she has a complete set, which means Abbie was the true daughter-in-law of the Carneys all along." Logan's mother stared at the silver ornaments all over Abbie's body. Her eyes widened in disbelief. Her mouth opened and closed, but no words came out. I stood o

Early the next morning, Leo and I went to the county sheriff's office. Logan and Abbie had been held there overnight. Their faces were pale, their eyes shadowed, and all the arrogance they had shown yesterday was gone. The moment they saw me, both of them exploded. "Julia, you still have the nerve to show your face?" Logan slammed his cuffed hands against the table, making the metal chains rattle. "How long have you been fooling around with that man? You shameless, two-faced woman!" Abbie's voice turned sharp. "Exactly! No wonder you could not get married after seven years. A calculating woman like you deserves it." Logan breathed hard and glared at me. "Go withdraw the charges right now," he ordered. "Tell them you fell into the pit on your own and that it had nothing to do with us." He probably still thought I would obey him the way I used to. I gave him a cold glance, took out my phone, and played the recording from the night they pushed me into the pit. Logan's fa

The wedding horns sounded again, and firecrackers burst loudly through the village. Leo took my hand and led me out of my family's house. The moment we reached the entrance of Silver Hollow, my mother's tears began to fall. "Julia…" I knew what she was afraid of. In Silver Hollow, when a daughter married someone from far away, she might not come home for months. Some women who married too far away did not see their families for years. My nose stung, and my eyes turned red. I had lived in this village for more than twenty years. Now that I was suddenly supposed to leave, unease rose inside me like a tide. But Leo did not lead me out of the village. Instead, he held my hand and walked slowly along the cobblestone road. We passed the Old Oak Shrine, the silver shop, and the ancient oak tree at the center of the village. After walking one full circle, we returned to where we had started. I looked at him in confusion. "What are you doing?" Leo pointed to a house nearby

Logan shook out the wrist Leo had nearly crushed, then forced a contemptuous smile onto his face. He glanced at the uniformed officers and spoke carelessly. "Julia, I know you are embarrassed because of the bridal set, but hiring actors to put on a show is a little much. I already told you I would make it up to you. Be good and send them away." I ignored him. Instead, I turned to the officer in charge and pointed at Logan and Abbie. "They were the ones who pushed me into the pit behind the hill last night. Then, they dumped more than a dozen snakes on me. I spent the entire night trying to climb out." The officer nodded. Then, he showed his badge and handcuffs. "Abbie Gardner, Logan Carney, you are both suspected of assault. Please cooperate with our investigation." Abbie froze for a second before rolling her eyes. "It was just a joke. Is this really necessary? Everyone in Silver Hollow has been scared by snakes before." Leo stood beside me, his voice calm and unhurried. "T
