INICIAR SESIÓN“No!” Eliana screamed, shoving Joan's hand away. “I want Kim to feed me.”
“Stop it!” Joan snapped, her face squeezed into a frown. Eliana flinched, shocked at her mother's sudden change toward her. “Joan,” Kimberly snapped, rushing to Eliana's side and placing the girl's head gently on her chest. “She's just a child and she's sick. You don't yell at a sick child…..” “Don't tell me how to raise my child,” Joan's voice dropped to a hiss. Kimberly exchanged a shock and angry glance at Keon, who immediately knew he had to intervene. “Babe, Kim is just trying to help you….” “And I don't need her help!” Joan said with anger. “She should leave me to take care of my child the way I want.” Kimberly rose from the bed, picked up her bag and turned to the door, but stopped when Eliana let out a loud cry. “I want her to stay, daddy,” Eliana's voice cracked, tears rolling down her cheeks. Keon exhaled. He reached out for Joan's hand, locking eyes with her. “Kim means no harm, she wants the best for Eliana like you do. My love, please let her stay with Eliana till she gets better.” Joan jerked her hand free. “So, I don't know how to take care of my child anymore?” “I didn't say that, Joan,” Keon rose from the chair, closing the distance between them. “You know how much Eliana loves to be around Kim, that can hasten her healing process.” His palm settled on her waist, “Please, my love.” Kimberly's fist tightened around her bag strap. She stared at Keon's hand on Joan's waist, her jaw clenched. “Fine,” Joan said and stepped back from him. “I need to go home,” without saying goodbye, she shoved the ward door open and slammed it behind her. “I don't like how you held her waist,” Kimberly said immediately after Joan left the room. “Kim, you need to stay calm. Joan is seen as my wife and she thinks she's my wife as well, I need to treat her as such. Remember, my mother must not know I married you.” Keon said, his eyes fixed on hers. Kimberly's lips pressed together and she gave a reluctant nod. In the house, Joan collapsed into the bed, tears dropping down onto the fabric. She had cried her eyes out even while driving home, yet the tears wouldn't stop flowing. “I need to move out of here,” she whispered to herself. She wanted to stand up to pick her phone when her foot struck a small container and it tipped, scattering across the floor. As she bent to gather the spilled pills from the tile, Keon's multiple betrayal flashed across her mind. ‘What if these aren't vitamins like he claimed?’ She quickly took a picture of the pills and sent it to her nurse friend. “That's contraceptives, why are you using it?” Her friend’s reply popped up in seconds. Joan's heart skipped, her phone almost slipped from her fingers. Keon had been the reason she didn't get pregnant. Three years of marriage and she could count the number of times Keon had been intimate with her. She had been the one who had initiated and begged Keon before he could come close to her, and he would always ensure she used a pill afterward, telling her they were just ladies vitamins. “This is wickedness.” Joan's lips trembled as a tear rolled down her cheek. After she gathered her strength, she walked into the bathroom, washed her red eyes, applied makeup to cover her dark circles and changed her dress. She was ready to go see a realtor. In an hour, she was in Mr. Stephen’s office, and had already chosen the mansion she wanted for herself. “How do I make payment?” She asked. “Please, go to the finance desk and make your payment, Ms Evans,” Mr. Stephen said with a smile, sliding a paper toward her. Joan nodded and headed to the finance desk. She slid her card across the counter and payment was made with all the money in there that she had saved from Keon's gift to her. She wasn't ready for anyone to know she was the heir of the Langley family yet, so she left the black card in her bag. That black card was one of her inheritances. After she signed all the necessary documents, she walked out of the office with one of the agents to go see the house. Her eyes were just on the road, they barely saw anything as her mind had drifted again. The blare of a horn jolted her back and her eyes snapped up. She had hit the rear of a car. “Oh my goodness!” She exclaimed, rushing out of the car. “What have you done, you poor thing,” the driver stormed out, charging toward Joan. “You have to fix this,” the driver shouted, his face red. “I’m sorry,” Joan stammered. The chaos made cars stop. Some drivers rolled down windows to intervene, some held their phones out to make content of the scene. A young lady, probably in her late thirties walked toward them. Her gaze locked on Joan and her eyes widened. “Ms. Joan Langley,” she called out, her voice cutting through the noise. Everyone exchanged shocked glances. Murmurs filled the air. How could a woman dressed like this, driving a worn Camry be called Ms. Langley? “Don't be foolish, woman,” the driver snapped at the young lady, jabbing a finger in her direction. “I know the whole Langley family. They don't have a daughter.” The young lady hissed at him and turned back to Joan with a soft smile. “I'm Mira, the head housekeeper of the Langley family. Your family wants to see you.” “Se…e me?” Joan's voice trailed off, the words barely a whisper. 'How did she know me so fast? What's going on?' “Yes ma'am,” Mira replied with a slight bow. The murmur in the crowd grew louder. She stepped closer to Joan, lowering her voice so no one else could hear. “Attorney Mitchell came to the mansion today and showed your picture to everyone in the house. Your stepmother couldn't wait to see you.” “I'm glad I helped her find you.” She added, her smile widened. “Please, your family wants you. Let's go to your father’s house.” She said it again. “My father's house?” Joan's heart skipped. It was late and Joan still wasn't home. Keon paced in front of her room, his mind racing. Every second, his eyes snap to his wristwatch. He'd stepped outside about five times already to scan the driveway for car headlights. “Dinner is ready,” Kimberly's voice came from behind him, flat and worn out. He gave two quick nods and followed her to the dining room. He wasn't hungry, but he couldn't afford another fight tonight. As the maid set the plate down in front of him, he looked up at her. “Did your madam say where she was going?” “No, sir” the maid shook her head. “I was about to ask about her.” Keon's eyes narrowed, the fork he was holding slipped from his hand and clattered to the floor.“What do you mean? I left all of you in this house.” “We haven't seen her since yesterday morning….”“What!”Keon's voice cracked. “Joan didn't sleep in this house yesterday and no one thought to inform me?” His chest tightened. He shoved his chair back and stormed out of the dining room t
Keon felt overwhelmed and frustrated by Joan's response. He called her, but her phone was switched off. Later, his calls went straight to voicemail. He took the early flight like she'd advised. He delivered the presentation himself, but the clients weren't satisfied. They said what he and his team presented bore no resemblance to the proposal. “I doubt any of you wrote the proposal that was sent to us,” one of the clients said. Keon was unraveling. His mother and sister were on his neck, demanding Joan apologize. And Joan? Her number still wouldn't go through. He got home and bolted to his room. Joan's wardrobe was empty. Panic shot through him. He hurried to her room and found it locked. But the pair of flip-flops lying in front of the door gave him a small measure of peace. His mind relaxed, hoping she had packed her things into her room, and hadn't left him.“You’re working yourself up over her lately. You barely even have time for me,” Kimberly walked up to him, arms crossed
Just after she dropped Keon’s call, she got a text from Richmond saying they should meet. Joan dressed up in a simple top and jean trousers, to go meet him in one of the family guest houses. In twenty minutes, she was there. “The Langley heir should have a car and security detail by now,” Richmond said warmly, rising to greet her. He pulled her into a quick side hug, smiling. “Uncle, I need to be low-key,” Joan replied, taking her seat. Richmond sat across from her, one eyebrow raised. “And why is that?” Joan pressed her lips together and rolled her eyes. “I just want to stay humble.” Richmond shook his head. “Humility doesn't mean making yourself a target. Remember, you're not safe out there.” Joan nodded thoughtfully. Richmond gave a smile and then returned his attention to his phone. For a moment, Joan just watched him in silence, not wanting to distract him from whoever he was texting. “You’ll go home with a new car,” Richmond said, looking up and dropping the phone on th
Joan woke to the shrill ring of her phone. Half-awake, she fumbled for it and picked up the call.“What the hell has come over you, Joan?” Mrs. Alice Thompson's voice flooded the line.Sleep vanished from her eyes instantly. She sat up, rubbing her eyes, trying to piece together what she could have done wrong. But nothing came to her mind. “Where were you yesterday?” Alice spat, anger dripping from her tone.“Do you know how much you’ve cost the company?” Joan frowned in confusion. “What are you talking about, mom?” “Where did you go? You missed the meeting with the client. And now he pulled out” Joan raised an eyebrow and let out a low chuckle. She didn't reply to Alice. Instead, she glanced at her screen and saw seven missed calls, all from Keon.Apparently he informed his mother when he couldn't reach her. “Joan!” Alice barked.“I was the one who got us the contract in the first place. And unfortunately we lost it back.” Joan's voice was low but cold. The line went silent.
The time was 2:30pm. Joan shut down her laptop, arranged the files neatly and cleared up the desk. The afternoon had to be spent preparing. First, a body massage at the spa, then to the boutique to get a dress for her dinner date. She was about to lock the office when the secretary came running, phone in hand like she'd just received an urgent call. “Mr. Kelvin called,” she said, a little breathless. “He said he needs to have an urgent meeting with you today, ma’am.” “The client we just closed the 10million deal with?”“Yes, ma’am.” Joan sighed, glanced at her wristwatch again and shook her head. “I have to be somewhere important,” she said. Without another word, she walked away, leaving the secretary to watch her in shock. ‘If Keon can leave his company to be with a woman, there's nothing wrong with going to enjoy myself too.’ The next three hours were spent at the spa, then at the boutique where she picked out a simple, beautiful purple ankle-length gown with a slit that stop
“Since it's for my safety. I accept.” Richmond's brow raised in surprise. He hadn't anticipated her agreement would come so easily. “I'm proud of you, Joan,” he said with a smile. Joan nodded once. No smile. “But why did he choose me?” Richmond exhaled and rolled his eyes, “I can't explain that. Perhaps you can ask him when you meet.” “Hmm, but Uncle, don't you think Tristan wants me because of the Langley Corp?” “No, I don't think so,” Richmond said, shaking his head. “Langley Corp is nothing compared to what Tristan owns. If anything, Langley Corp will benefit more if you marry Tristan.”Joan took a breath and nodded thoughtfully. She parted her lips to ask another question, but nervously shut her mouth when seven men in black, tailored suits advanced toward them in unison. Joan flinched, fear taking over her. Richmond, however, remained composed. Drawing from his calmness, she straightened in her seat and steadied her breathing. The man who appeared to be their leader stepp
