INICIAR SESIÓN“Yes,” Mira replied with a smile, stretching her hand toward where the Langley cars were parked.
“A chauffeur will come pick your car up,” she said again. Joan nodded. Her heart raced. She knew she would one day meet her family members but never thought it would be this soon. She turned to the agent following her, “some other time, please.” “Yes, Ms. Langley,” the young man said, bowing slightly. This only raised Joan's fear. During the ride, Mira told her a little about the Langley family. Ryder Langley, her father, had two brothers. His elder brother, Justin, stayed in Moonlight city, while his younger brother, Richmond was abroad at the moment. Joan saw it whenever Mira talked about Richmond or the late Ryder. Mira's face would soften, her smile would widen. But when Joan asked about her stepmother, Natalie and Justin, Mira’s smile disappeared. Joan didn't need anyone to explain it. She became scared of them before even meeting them. Joan's eyes widened as they drove through the gate. The driveway stretched past acres of land. They kept driving and driving, it felt like forever to reach the mansion itself. The mansion was four stories high. The entrance door gleamed gold, the metal was so polished that one could see one's reflection. Joan almost forgot to breathe when the door slid open after Mira pressed a code on a black panel. She'd never seen a house like this in her life. “Your stepmother,” Mira whispered to Joan at the sight of an elegant woman, probably in her mid-sixties. Natalie turned in their direction. A smile spread on her lips, but it didn't reach her eyes. “You're Joan?” She asked, walking toward her. “Yes,” Joan whispered, trying to calm her nerves. “I don't need any introduction. I'm sure you already know who I am.” Joan nodded, avoiding meeting her gaze. Just then, a young man entered. Joan already knew who he was: Nolan, her adoptive brother. “Sit,” Natalie said gently, but the word still sounded cold. Mira, reading the room, gave Joan a slight bow and left, leaving her with Natalie and Nolan. “It's nice meeting you, I guess,” Natalie said with a cold smile. Her legs were crossed and a glass of wine swung in her hand. Joan sat quiet, eyes on the floor. She couldn't meet their eyes. “You’ve signed your inheritance already,” she said again, still smiling. Joan knew what was coming for her. Her fingers pinched her skin on the lap as if telling herself the need to be courageous. She exhaled and finally looked up at Natalie. “You asked to see me, Natalie. What's the meeting for?” Joan's confidence hit the room. Natalie's eyes flicked to Nolan, exchanging shocked glances. Nolan cleared his throat and sat straight. “Joan, you have the greatest part of our father’s inheritance even though you’re just an illegitimate child.” Nolan’s words upset Joan. Her fist clenched on her lap, forcing herself to stay calm. Natalie leaned to Nolan and whispered something in his ear. Then, he stood, took the elevator and disappeared. Joan watched them in silence, fear rising in her. Nolan came back with a document in his hand, which he dropped in front of Joan. “Twenty million dollars will be for you, if you give up the family company.” Nolan said bluntly. Natalie leaned forward, gaze fixed on Joan. “You've never run a company in your life, Joan. The family won't sit back and watch you destroy Langley Corp. This isn't us cheating you. This is us being generous, because twenty million is a huge sum of money.” Joan rolled her eyes and chuckled dryly. She picked up the documents and flipped through the pages. Signing it meant she was giving up all her rights to Nolan Langley. “I'm not doing this. Save your bloody money.” she said bluntly, rising to her feet. Natalie rose too. Her eyes burned with rage. “You're just a poor thing. I know what twenty million can do for you. Your mother would have jumped at this offer if she was alive. She stupidly gave her body to Ryder because of his wealth. She thought she could pin him down with a pregnancy. She didn't know the Langley family would never accept a wretch as daughter-in-law...” “Enough,” Joan shouted, palm up. “Don't talk about my mother like that...” A heavy slap landed on her cheek before she could finish. “Natalie!” A man’s voice rang from behind. Natalie and Nolan froze and turned. Joan held her burning cheek, her eyes welled up with tears. “Nolan, you stand there and watch your mother hit your sister,” Richmond yelled. Nolan's brows furrowed, his hands deep in his pockets “She's not my sister,” he muttered. “Joan's mom was never married to my brother, but Joan is still his child. She's his blood. The fact that Ryder chose her over your spoiled brat in that will should knock some sense into you, but I guess it didn't...” “Richmond, please stay out of this,” Natalie snapped, her eyes almost bulging out of their sockets. “Why are you even here?” “This is my brother's house and I can come in at any time. And I knew this would happen. That's why I returned to the city early.” Richmond replied, his nostrils flaring. Joan saw the hatred and anger on Natalie and Nolan's faces. She concluded Richmond was the brother Mira told her had the same good heart as her father. Richmond hissed, his eyes swept over Natalie with disgust. He brushed past her, close enough that she stumbled back a step. He didn't look back at her, he just grabbed Joan's hand. “Follow me,” he said quietly. Joan didn't hesitate, she followed him out of the house without a word. “Mom, we can't let her go just like that,” Nolan's voice cracked, watching them walk away. Natalie inhaled in a sharp breath. “We can't do anything with Richmond here.” She pulled out her phone. “I need to call Justin. He'll know how to handle Richmond. Once Richmond is out of the way, then we can deal with Joan.”It was late and Joan still wasn't home. Keon paced in front of her room, his mind racing. Every second, his eyes snap to his wristwatch. He'd stepped outside about five times already to scan the driveway for car headlights. “Dinner is ready,” Kimberly's voice came from behind him, flat and worn out. He gave two quick nods and followed her to the dining room. He wasn't hungry, but he couldn't afford another fight tonight. As the maid set the plate down in front of him, he looked up at her. “Did your madam say where she was going?” “No, sir” the maid shook her head. “I was about to ask about her.” Keon's eyes narrowed, the fork he was holding slipped from his hand and clattered to the floor.“What do you mean? I left all of you in this house.” “We haven't seen her since yesterday morning….”“What!”Keon's voice cracked. “Joan didn't sleep in this house yesterday and no one thought to inform me?” His chest tightened. He shoved his chair back and stormed out of the dining room t
Keon felt overwhelmed and frustrated by Joan's response. He called her, but her phone was switched off. Later, his calls went straight to voicemail. He took the early flight like she'd advised. He delivered the presentation himself, but the clients weren't satisfied. They said what he and his team presented bore no resemblance to the proposal. “I doubt any of you wrote the proposal that was sent to us,” one of the clients said. Keon was unraveling. His mother and sister were on his neck, demanding Joan apologize. And Joan? Her number still wouldn't go through. He got home and bolted to his room. Joan's wardrobe was empty. Panic shot through him. He hurried to her room and found it locked. But the pair of flip-flops lying in front of the door gave him a small measure of peace. His mind relaxed, hoping she had packed her things into her room, and hadn't left him.“You’re working yourself up over her lately. You barely even have time for me,” Kimberly walked up to him, arms crossed
Just after she dropped Keon’s call, she got a text from Richmond saying they should meet. Joan dressed up in a simple top and jean trousers, to go meet him in one of the family guest houses. In twenty minutes, she was there. “The Langley heir should have a car and security detail by now,” Richmond said warmly, rising to greet her. He pulled her into a quick side hug, smiling. “Uncle, I need to be low-key,” Joan replied, taking her seat. Richmond sat across from her, one eyebrow raised. “And why is that?” Joan pressed her lips together and rolled her eyes. “I just want to stay humble.” Richmond shook his head. “Humility doesn't mean making yourself a target. Remember, you're not safe out there.” Joan nodded thoughtfully. Richmond gave a smile and then returned his attention to his phone. For a moment, Joan just watched him in silence, not wanting to distract him from whoever he was texting. “You’ll go home with a new car,” Richmond said, looking up and dropping the phone on th
Joan woke to the shrill ring of her phone. Half-awake, she fumbled for it and picked up the call.“What the hell has come over you, Joan?” Mrs. Alice Thompson's voice flooded the line.Sleep vanished from her eyes instantly. She sat up, rubbing her eyes, trying to piece together what she could have done wrong. But nothing came to her mind. “Where were you yesterday?” Alice spat, anger dripping from her tone.“Do you know how much you’ve cost the company?” Joan frowned in confusion. “What are you talking about, mom?” “Where did you go? You missed the meeting with the client. And now he pulled out” Joan raised an eyebrow and let out a low chuckle. She didn't reply to Alice. Instead, she glanced at her screen and saw seven missed calls, all from Keon.Apparently he informed his mother when he couldn't reach her. “Joan!” Alice barked.“I was the one who got us the contract in the first place. And unfortunately we lost it back.” Joan's voice was low but cold. The line went silent.
The time was 2:30pm. Joan shut down her laptop, arranged the files neatly and cleared up the desk. The afternoon had to be spent preparing. First, a body massage at the spa, then to the boutique to get a dress for her dinner date. She was about to lock the office when the secretary came running, phone in hand like she'd just received an urgent call. “Mr. Kelvin called,” she said, a little breathless. “He said he needs to have an urgent meeting with you today, ma’am.” “The client we just closed the 10million deal with?”“Yes, ma’am.” Joan sighed, glanced at her wristwatch again and shook her head. “I have to be somewhere important,” she said. Without another word, she walked away, leaving the secretary to watch her in shock. ‘If Keon can leave his company to be with a woman, there's nothing wrong with going to enjoy myself too.’ The next three hours were spent at the spa, then at the boutique where she picked out a simple, beautiful purple ankle-length gown with a slit that stop
“Since it's for my safety. I accept.” Richmond's brow raised in surprise. He hadn't anticipated her agreement would come so easily. “I'm proud of you, Joan,” he said with a smile. Joan nodded once. No smile. “But why did he choose me?” Richmond exhaled and rolled his eyes, “I can't explain that. Perhaps you can ask him when you meet.” “Hmm, but Uncle, don't you think Tristan wants me because of the Langley Corp?” “No, I don't think so,” Richmond said, shaking his head. “Langley Corp is nothing compared to what Tristan owns. If anything, Langley Corp will benefit more if you marry Tristan.”Joan took a breath and nodded thoughtfully. She parted her lips to ask another question, but nervously shut her mouth when seven men in black, tailored suits advanced toward them in unison. Joan flinched, fear taking over her. Richmond, however, remained composed. Drawing from his calmness, she straightened in her seat and steadied her breathing. The man who appeared to be their leader stepp
