Chapter 4

Joan yanked her hand free from Richmond's the second they were far from the mansion.

“Thank you for saving me,” she said, stepping away from him. “But I won't be stupid twice and follow you, like I did when I followed Mira here,” she added and started walking away.

“Joan, I’m your uncle,” Richmond replied, keeping his voice calm as he matched her pace. “I'm not like your stepmother and brother. Trust me.”

Joan shook her head without looking back at him. She kept walking fast, and Richmond also kept pace behind her.

“I don't trust anyone,” Joan said, her steps quickening.

“I'm the only one who can protect you.” His voice dropped. “You're in danger, Joan. Natalie, Nolan and Justin all want your father's estate for themselves. They're ruthless. They'll come after you.”

“How sure am I that you’re not one of them? That this isn't just one of your tactics?” Joan said, walking faster toward the garage.

She moved through the garage, glancing around. When she spotted her car, she let out a deep breath of relief.

She ran to it. The chauffeur standing beside it handed her the keys. Without saying any more words to Richmond, she jumped into the car and sped off.

Getting home, her frustration spiked when she spotted Keon and Kimberly in the living room. Kimberly's head was on Keon's laps. They were talking really loud, laughing and tickling each other. They didn't even notice Joan's presence.

Joan slammed the door hard. It jolted them up, fear flashing across their faces.

“Em…babe... you're back. Where did you go?” Keon stammered, his hands trembling.

Joan looked at them with disdain. She scoffed, turned to leave, then stopped halfway.

“You left your daughter in the hospital just to come here and cheat right?” She asked, arms crossed, one brow raised.

“No, I wasn't cheating,” Keon quickly said. “I can't cheat on you, Joan.” He gave a fake, innocent smile. The one that made Joan want to punch him in the face.

“Where's my child?” Joan asked coldly.

“She's in her room. We arranged home care so we could take care of her better.” Kimberly replied and earned a hiss from Joan.

Joan went to check on Eliana first, and she was sleeping. Then she headed to her room. Keon followed right behind her, looking stupid.

“Joan, you've been acting weird since this morning. Are you fine?” Keon settled beside her and reached for her hand.

“It's just a mood swing. Nothing. I'm fine,” she said, forcing a smile. She knew Keon would keep probing until she softened up and started talking. So she quickly gave him an excuse.

“It's alright, baby,” Keon said, pulling her head on his shoulder and running his fingers through her hair.

After some minutes of silence, Joan lifted her head. She put on her baby-face expression, the one she used when she wanted something. Keon knew that look. He smiled.

“What do you want?” He asked.

Joan returned his smile and sat up straight. “I want to start a clothing business.” She said softly.

“How much do you need?” Keon asked, gentle.

That was one thing about him, he wasn't stingy with money.

“I can start with five thousand dollars,” Joan replied.

“I’ll get it transferred to you tonight,” he said with a warm smile.

Joan jumped on him, and as usual, he ducked her kisses.

“That's fine,” Joan said, sitting back.

None of them spoke for a few seconds until Keon stood up. “I'm gonna go check on Eliana and see that Kim is good.” Joan didn't reply, she just watched him leave.

She let out a deep breath of relief after he left.

Of course, she wasn't going to start any business. Not when she had Langley Corp to oversee. She just needed an excuse. Something to tell him whenever she needed to attend to the issue at hand, before she finally got to confront him.

Knowing Kimberly would keep Keon distracted and he wouldn't return to the room anytime soon, Joan began parking her things.

Her phone vibrated on the bed. She checked the screen, and it was a text from an unknown number.

“Joan, your life is in danger. You need to see me as early as tomorrow morning.” The text stared back at her.

She was still trying to process it when another text showing an address came in. Below it was written: From Richmond.

Throughout the night, Joan couldn't sleep. She kept wondering if she could trust Richmond or not.

Keon didn't sleep in the room with her. He used Eliana's sickness as an excuse to stay in the child's room, which Joan knew was a lie. That gave her space to pace, thinking throughout the night for her next move.

When morning came, Keon told her he was taking Eliana and Kim to the park. Of course she accepted without any argument. Anything for her to leave the house without him getting suspicious.

Joan got to the address. Richmond was already seated, patiently waiting for her.

“Glad you came,” he said, pulling out a chair for her to sit.

“Uncle, can we get to the point,” Joan said dryly.

Richmond chuckled under his breath, cleared his throat and started. “Joan, your stepmother is dangerous, and I can't protect you. You need to protect yourself.”

Joan's brows furrowed in confusion.

“I came back to the city because of you. I know how dangerous Natalie is.” He paused, took a sip of his wine before continuing. “I got a message from Tristan Blake. He heard you're now an overseer of Langley Corp”

“Tristan Blake?” Joan's brow shot up.

“Yes, the heir to the richest family in the country. Joan, the family is more powerful than ours.”

Joan raised an eyebrow, still confused on how that's going to help protect her.

“He wants you as his bride. Joan, if you marry him, Natalie can't touch you, because Tristan is powerful.”

“A marriage of alliance?”

“Yes,” Richmond replied.

It was late and Joan still wasn't home. Keon paced in front of her room, his mind racing. Every second, his eyes snap to his wristwatch. He'd stepped outside about five times already to scan the driveway for car headlights. “Dinner is ready,” Kimberly's voice came from behind him, flat and worn out. He gave two quick nods and followed her to the dining room. He wasn't hungry, but he couldn't afford another fight tonight. As the maid set the plate down in front of him, he looked up at her. “Did your madam say where she was going?” “No, sir” the maid shook her head. “I was about to ask about her.” Keon's eyes narrowed, the fork he was holding slipped from his hand and clattered to the floor.“What do you mean? I left all of you in this house.” “We haven't seen her since yesterday morning….”“What!”Keon's voice cracked. “Joan didn't sleep in this house yesterday and no one thought to inform me?” His chest tightened. He shoved his chair back and stormed out of the dining room t

Keon felt overwhelmed and frustrated by Joan's response. He called her, but her phone was switched off. Later, his calls went straight to voicemail. He took the early flight like she'd advised. He delivered the presentation himself, but the clients weren't satisfied. They said what he and his team presented bore no resemblance to the proposal. “I doubt any of you wrote the proposal that was sent to us,” one of the clients said. Keon was unraveling. His mother and sister were on his neck, demanding Joan apologize. And Joan? Her number still wouldn't go through. He got home and bolted to his room. Joan's wardrobe was empty. Panic shot through him. He hurried to her room and found it locked. But the pair of flip-flops lying in front of the door gave him a small measure of peace. His mind relaxed, hoping she had packed her things into her room, and hadn't left him.“You’re working yourself up over her lately. You barely even have time for me,” Kimberly walked up to him, arms crossed

Just after she dropped Keon’s call, she got a text from Richmond saying they should meet. Joan dressed up in a simple top and jean trousers, to go meet him in one of the family guest houses. In twenty minutes, she was there. “The Langley heir should have a car and security detail by now,” Richmond said warmly, rising to greet her. He pulled her into a quick side hug, smiling. “Uncle, I need to be low-key,” Joan replied, taking her seat. Richmond sat across from her, one eyebrow raised. “And why is that?” Joan pressed her lips together and rolled her eyes. “I just want to stay humble.” Richmond shook his head. “Humility doesn't mean making yourself a target. Remember, you're not safe out there.” Joan nodded thoughtfully. Richmond gave a smile and then returned his attention to his phone. For a moment, Joan just watched him in silence, not wanting to distract him from whoever he was texting. “You’ll go home with a new car,” Richmond said, looking up and dropping the phone on th

Joan woke to the shrill ring of her phone. Half-awake, she fumbled for it and picked up the call.“What the hell has come over you, Joan?” Mrs. Alice Thompson's voice flooded the line.Sleep vanished from her eyes instantly. She sat up, rubbing her eyes, trying to piece together what she could have done wrong. But nothing came to her mind. “Where were you yesterday?” Alice spat, anger dripping from her tone.“Do you know how much you’ve cost the company?” Joan frowned in confusion. “What are you talking about, mom?” “Where did you go? You missed the meeting with the client. And now he pulled out” Joan raised an eyebrow and let out a low chuckle. She didn't reply to Alice. Instead, she glanced at her screen and saw seven missed calls, all from Keon.Apparently he informed his mother when he couldn't reach her. “Joan!” Alice barked.“I was the one who got us the contract in the first place. And unfortunately we lost it back.” Joan's voice was low but cold. The line went silent.

The time was 2:30pm. Joan shut down her laptop, arranged the files neatly and cleared up the desk. The afternoon had to be spent preparing. First, a body massage at the spa, then to the boutique to get a dress for her dinner date. She was about to lock the office when the secretary came running, phone in hand like she'd just received an urgent call. “Mr. Kelvin called,” she said, a little breathless. “He said he needs to have an urgent meeting with you today, ma’am.” “The client we just closed the 10million deal with?”“Yes, ma’am.” Joan sighed, glanced at her wristwatch again and shook her head. “I have to be somewhere important,” she said. Without another word, she walked away, leaving the secretary to watch her in shock. ‘If Keon can leave his company to be with a woman, there's nothing wrong with going to enjoy myself too.’ The next three hours were spent at the spa, then at the boutique where she picked out a simple, beautiful purple ankle-length gown with a slit that stop

“Since it's for my safety. I accept.” Richmond's brow raised in surprise. He hadn't anticipated her agreement would come so easily. “I'm proud of you, Joan,” he said with a smile. Joan nodded once. No smile. “But why did he choose me?” Richmond exhaled and rolled his eyes, “I can't explain that. Perhaps you can ask him when you meet.” “Hmm, but Uncle, don't you think Tristan wants me because of the Langley Corp?” “No, I don't think so,” Richmond said, shaking his head. “Langley Corp is nothing compared to what Tristan owns. If anything, Langley Corp will benefit more if you marry Tristan.”Joan took a breath and nodded thoughtfully. She parted her lips to ask another question, but nervously shut her mouth when seven men in black, tailored suits advanced toward them in unison. Joan flinched, fear taking over her. Richmond, however, remained composed. Drawing from his calmness, she straightened in her seat and steadied her breathing. The man who appeared to be their leader stepp
