Chapter 3

Author: Moore
When I returned home, the sky had already turned dark.

We lived in a two-story, old-fashioned townhouse nestled in a residential area near the pier.

The house wasn’t large, only about one hundred square meters. Harrison’s second-hand sedan, which he had driven for several years, was parked in the yard.

This place was very close to the customs office, chosen solely for Harrison’s convenience in commuting to and from work.

To look after his pride, I hadn't told him I possessed a manor of several thousand square meters in Narshe, complete with a full staff and bodyguards.

I left the manor uninhabited to squeeze into this tiny house with him, living with his parents day in and day out.

Originally, I had planned to reveal my identity to him after the wedding. Looking at it now, though, there was no need.

With a single phone call, several black business vans pulled up outside the door in less than twenty minutes.

My assistant, James, brought my men inside, and they methodically organized my belongings.

Clothes, jewelry, documents… each item was packed into boxes.

Watching the traces of my life vanish bit by bit, I stood in the living room, my heart devoid of any emotion.

Right at this moment, the phone rang once again.

"Lola, transfer fifty thousand dollars to me. Mandy's eyeing a bag, and I promised to buy it for her."

His tone was a matter of course, without even a single sentence of preamble.

I fell silent for a few seconds, then suddenly laughed.

"Harrison, are you certain you want to borrow money from me just to buy a gift for another woman?"

The other end of the line went quiet for an instant, and very quickly, his tone turned heavy.

"Lola, when did you become so petty? It's Mandy's first time going abroad, so what's wrong with me giving her a gift? Can you stop letting your mind wander?"

I questioned back in a light voice.

"So, you feel this is very normal?"

His voice carried impatience as he said, "Lola, don't always assume the worst of people.

"Forget it, there's no reasoning with you. You'd simply make trouble out of nothing."

He hung up the phone. Looking at the darkened phone screen, my heart throbbed with a faint ache.

Over five years, the most expensive gift he had ever given me was merely a necklace worth a few hundred dollars. Now, he was actually willing to borrow money from me to buy luxury goods for another woman.

As if driven by some bizarre impulse, I clicked open Mandy's Instagram.

Her latest update had been posted half an hour ago.

The first photo was of the airport's VIP lounge.

Mandy sat before the floor-to-ceiling window, the table piled high with exquisite pastries and drinks.

The caption read:

[First time in an airport VIP lounge. Turns out it can be this comfortable before boarding. Thank you to Mr. Tucker for looking after me all along the way. Knowing I have a seafood allergy, he even specially accompanied me to pick out food all over again.]

In the comments section, quite a few colleagues left messages one after another.

[Mr. Tucker is way too considerate.]

[With this kind of treatment, if I didn't know better, I'd think he was her boyfriend.]

[So envious. It's true happiness to have someone look after you.]

Mandy offered no explanation, only replying with a shy face-covering emoji.

The second photo showed the spacious and comfortable seats of the first-class cabin.

She leaned against the leather seat with slippers at her feet. Champagne, caviar, and exquisite pastries set before her, while an endless sea of clouds stretched outside the window.

The caption read:

[First time flying first class. A long-haul flight doesn't have to be tiring at all. Thank you to Mr. Tucker for leaving the best seats for me, Mom, and Dad. Today truly feels like a dream.]

I stared at the photo, not shifting away for a long time.

Those three seats originally belonged to me and my parents.

The third photo was in a luxury boutique in the airport duty-free shop.

Mandy held a limited-edition handbag of the latest design, her smile exceptionally brilliant. Harrison stood before the checkout counter, lowering his head to input his credit card password.

The caption read:

[Thank you to Mr. Tucker for the gift. Since it's my first time going abroad, he said a girl always needs to buy something she likes as a keepsake, and that it's worth it no matter how expensive. So happy today.]

I slowly zoomed in on the photo.

The bank card beside the checkout counter was something I couldn't be more familiar with—Harrison's credit card.

I guess he wasn't without money. He was merely reluctant to spend money on me.

At this time, James walked over.

"Miss, everything is packed."

As the last suitcase was lifted onto the van, the house I had lived in for five years no longer contained anything belonging to me.

My phone rang once again, but this time I didn't answer.

A message very quickly popped up.

[Lola, did you book that seven-star hotel in Meridianna? Why can't the front desk find our check-in information?]

I ignored it.

An hour later, my phone began to ring frantically.

By this time, I had already returned to the manor and intended to have nothing to do with Harrison. So, I blocked him.

However, less than a minute later, an unfamiliar number called in.

Looking at the constantly flashing screen, I still answered.

Harrison didn't know whose phone he had borrowed, but his voice no longer carried his previous composure, even bearing a trace of trembling that couldn't be concealed.

"Lola, I just went to the wedding venue. Why did they tell me...

"The wedding has been canceled?"

The commissioner immediately came forward to welcome me."Ms. Olsen, welcome."Immediately following, the head of the port authority, the managers of major shipping companies, and the pier supervisors all greeted me simultaneously, their synchronized voices echoing across the entire pier."Capo."Harrison froze, his eyes full of disbelief. He stared blankly at me, doubting over and over again whether he had mistaken me for someone else. However, that face was something he couldn't be more familiar with.I gave a slight nod, following my father as we walked toward the meeting room. From beginning to end, I didn't cast a single glance at Harrison. It was only after my departing figure vanished from his line of sight that Harrison snapped back to his senses, grabbing a colleague beside him with a sudden jerk."She... How could she be here?"The colleague looked bewildered."You didn't know? That lady is the eldest daughter of the Olsen family and also the capo of East Port. Th

He pulled out his phone and dialed my number over and over again. However, the only response was the ice-cold automated prompt."The user you have dialed is temporarily unavailable."He opened his messaging app next. When he hit send, a single grey check mark jumped up beside the text—I had blocked him.Harrison’s mind grew increasingly chaotic. He turned around, preparing to head out and look for me, but Heidi blocked him immediately."What are you looking for her for? Isn't she just throwing a tantrum? Leave her alone for a few days, and she’ll crawl back on her own."Daniel followed suit."Exactly, you can't spoil this kind of woman. She dares to run away from home before even getting married. What will she do in the future then? If you ask me, it's better that she left. We can just call off the wedding, and you can marry Mandy instead."Mandy’s face flushed red. She lowered her head and whispered, "Heidi, Daniel, please don't say things like that..."Her mouth offered a ref

The barrage of phone calls left Harrison with zero desire to vacation, so he hurriedly cut the itinerary short and rushed everyone back to Narshe overnight.Upon returning to the office, Director Addams threw a list right in front of his face.On the list, a staggering twelve long-term cooperative enterprises had submitted applications to replace their customs declaration clerk."What's happening right now has severely impacted our work. Think long and hard about whether you've offended someone recently!""I'm giving you one day to handle this. If we lose all these enterprises, not only is your promotion a goner, but you can forget about being evaluated as employee of the year too."Walking out of the office, Harrison's back was already thoroughly drenched in cold sweat. He immediately dialed the number of the person in charge at the very first enterprise."Mr. Thomas, is there some sort of misunderstanding between us?"The other end of the line merely let out a polite laugh."

I returned to the Narshe manor. The black iron gates slowly swung open, and the car drove along the tree-lined avenue into the estate. The moment the car came to a steady halt, over a dozen household staff stood in an orderly line at the entrance."Miss, welcome home."I handed my coat to one and stepped into the grand hall. The familiarity of everything allowed my nerves, which had been strained for the past few days, to finally relax. This was the life that belonged to me. There was no need to accommodate anyone, and certainly no need to hide myself carefully just to protect someone's pride. The butler stepped forward with an expression of deep respect."Miss, several of the managers have already arrived in the meeting room. They are all waiting for you."I nodded, walking straight into the meeting room to take the main seat, and spoke faintly."Let's begin."Documents were quickly delivered before me one after another."East Port Pier's container throughput increased by

"Mr. Tucker, to rebook the presidential suite, private butler, yacht, private dinner, and seaside ceremony, the total fees will need to be paid anew."When the front desk handed him the bill, Harrison’s smile froze slightly. This sum of money far exceeded his expectations. However, standing behind him was Mandy’s family, as well as several colleagues from the department.Everyone knew that this Meridianna wedding was planned by him. If he backed down now, his reputation would go down the drain.Gritting his teeth, Harrison handed over his bank card. The first card had insufficient balance. The second card's payment failed. It was only upon reaching the third credit card that the entire pre-authorization was finally completed. The endless, uninterrupted stream of deduction text messages caused his hand to tremble from heartache, yet he still forced a supportive smile."Let's go. All expenses today are on me."Several colleagues instantly cast envious gazes over."Mr. Tucker, y

I leaned back against the couch, my voice so calm that it never wavered."I canceled it. Since you look after Mandy so well, you should hold the wedding with her."After a few seconds, a soft chuckle came from the phone."Lola, I thought some major disaster had happened. Turns out you're just jealous."Didn't I explain it to you already? Mandy is just my colleague. She's new to the unit and doesn't understand many things. Why is it a problem that I look after her a bit more? Can you stop overthinking things?""I know it was a hassle for you and your mom and dad to get to a ship today. That's on me. When you arrive at Meridianna, I'll make it up to you."I spoke faintly. "Harrison, there is no making up to me. We're over."Harrison let out a light laugh, his tone full of disregard."Lola, stop making a scene. You love me so much. How could you possibly leave?"Besides, I'm about to be promoted very soon. Management has already sought me out for a talk. When I go back, I will be
