Chapter 3

Busy Mouse
Half an hour later, Officer Ford pushed open the door to the hospital room with a lab report.

I hastily stepped forward, my eyes glued to the report in his grip. "How did it turn out? What kind of poison was in there?"

Officer Ford took one look at me and shook his head. "There are no toxic substances in the residue from the cup. There aren't even any pesticide traces. It's just pure, natural orange juice."

I took the report from him and pored through it. There seriously was nothing wrong with it.

Yet, I was well aware that this was definitely not a case of ordinary food poisoning. There had to be something I had missed.

Hubert's voice was low and restrained. "The lab report's right here in black and white. The orange juice was fine. Dr. Young, what evidence do you have that makes you insist it was poisoning?"

I lifted my gaze to look him in the eye. "The patient's liver's going into acute failure. That is my evidence."

Hubert raised his voice. "Lennon buys junk food when he's out all the time. We can't possibly keep track of everything he eats—"

I coldly cut him off. "Lennon has had almost no appetite for the last two weeks, hasn't he?"

Before he could answer, Maeve guiltily chimed in, "Lennon's been such a picky eater lately. He always sneaks out to buy street snacks near his school gate. There's nothing I can do…"

"Besides a poor appetite, has he also had recurring abdominal pain, fatigue, and dizzy spells?"

Hubert's brows drew together. "How'd you know…"

I set the lab report on the table and explained calmly, "Because this isn't a case of sudden acute poisoning. It's the result of a toxin building up over time."

The air in the hospital room instantly went dead silent.

Without giving them a moment to catch their breath, I continued, "Sure, the orange juice came back clean. But after drinking it, why did the patient develop acute organ damage within just a few minutes?"

"What are you getting at?" Captain Moore scowled.

I paused before adding, "The juice was simply the catalyst."

As soon as my words sank in, a panicked look flashed through Maeve's eyes for a moment. The very next second, she clutched her baby bump and gasped. "Hubert... my stomach's cramping up all of a sudden!"

Hubert's expression shifted dramatically, and he hurriedly supported her. "Don't scare me, Maeve! You must've been frightened by being falsely accused and treated like a criminal just now. It probably startled you so badly that it affected the baby!"

Leaning weakly against him, Maeve sounded exceptionally understanding. "I'm fine… Please don't blame Dr. Young; she was just so anxious that she blurted out those things without much thought…"

He tightened his arm around her before whipping his head around to glare at me. "Dr. Young, my wife's pregnant, and your baseless accusations have distressed her so much she's in danger of a miscarriage! The second something goes wrong, you throw mud at the patient's family member. Is that how you practice medicine?"

Holding his gaze calmly, I responded firmly, "Mr. White, the reason I am standing here and refusing to back down is that, as a doctor, the only thing I care about is the life lying on that hospital bed."

I remained rooted to the spot, tuning out their endless squabbling as my brain replayed the whole logical chain at lightning speed.

Lennon's organs' cries couldn't be faked, and the burning sensation in his stomach had erupted in an instant. The toxin had already been lying dormant inside Lennon's body. This glass of orange juice was nothing more than a trigger—a catalyst that had instantly detonated all the toxins.

In that case… there was only one possible truth left. I raised my head, my gaze cutting across the hospital bed and meeting Maeve's eyes head-on. Resting feebly against Hubert's chest, the corners of her lips curled into a faint, provocative smile.

I closed the lab report and turned to Captain Moore. My voice was calmer and more certain than ever. "Give me one last chance, Captain Moore. I know where the true murder weapon is hidden."

Once the dust settled on Maeve's case, I became an absolute legend at Citry Central Hospital. Not only did I clear my name from the false accusations that I was a quack, but I also somehow earned the impressive title of "The Sherlock Holmes of Medicine".Now, getting an appointment with me as a specialist was harder than purchasing a holiday train ticket. The moment new slots were released, they were completely booked in under three seconds flat. Even the hospital director had recently started grinning from ear to ear whenever he saw me; his smile lines looked like they could crush flies. He went around telling everyone that I was the backbone of the entire hospital. …I had just spent the better part of the day in outpatient care when a woman named Zoe Miller with a full head of tight perm curls sat in front of me, clutching her chest with a dismal look. "Dr. Young, you have to save me! I've been suffering from insomnia every single day lately. I can't get a wink of sleep throug

Just then, the cheerful chatter of Lennon's internal organs echoed in my ears. His liver exclaimed. "Detox complete! I'm back in tip-top shape and ready to work!"His stomach let out a contented sigh. "Dad personally made me a nutritious meal yesterday, Dr. Young. It was a little burnt, but it was so warm and comforting. It doesn't hurt anymore!"After hearing their lively voices, I gently ruffled his soft hair. Lennon's large eyes sparkled with a bright, luminous light. He didn't mention Maeve, but I was well aware that he understood everything. It was just that there were some things a ten-year-old child didn't yet know how to describe in words, nor did he know when the wounds would truly heal. Perhaps when he grew up, he would find his own answers. I bent down until we were at eye level and said softly, "Lennon, if you ever feel unwell again, promise me you'll tell your dad right away, okay?" Lennon nodded vigorously and buried his face in my white coat. I gently patte

Captain Moore's booming voice echoed loudly throughout the ward and down the corridor. "On March 14th, you searched, 'How much aflatoxin does a ten-year-old child need to ingest to cause chronic liver failure?' "On May 2nd, you searched, 'How to disguise acute poisoning as long-term dietary problems and avoid forensic detection?' "And just last night, you searched, 'If my stepson dies from illness, can I, his stepmother, inherit all of my husband's assets?'"As this string of ice-cold, ruthless search records was read aloud in public, Maeve's facade was exposed once and for all. "My goodness! This woman's pure evil!""She looked up how to poison a child and how to steal his inheritance? She's no stepmother; she's a snake in human skin!""She was willing to harm a ten-year-old child for money, and she still had the nerve to play the victim and claim it was all a misunderstanding!" The onlookers immediately erupted into an uproar. The way everyone looked at Maeve completely ch

Maeve's emotions reached a fever pitch, and she stepped on a spot of butter that had dripped onto the floor earlier and fell heavily to the ground. The very next second, a desperate cry echoed in my ears. "It hurts so much… Help, I'm hemorrhaging. The baby's slipping away!"My expression changed dramatically, and I immediately called out, "This is bad. She's miscarrying! Hurry up and call an ambulance!""My baby… Save my baby…" Maeve wheezed, digging her nails into the floor. She stretched out her blood-stained hand and tried her best to grasp Hubert's pant leg. "Save our baby… If I lose it, I'll have to go to prison… Save me…"Hubert looked down at the woman, who was struggling in the pool of blood, his eyes filled with nothing but cold indifference and disgust. "This is your retribution!" The ambulance arrived in no time. In a little more than an hour, Maeve found herself in the exact same position she had intended for Lennon—being placed on a stretcher and rushed through the

Maeve's eyes were filled with pure, unadulterated malice as she sneered, "Hubert, do you really think I want to be someone else's free babysitter? You're away on business trips all the time, gone for weeks at a stretch! That little brat is mischievous and troublesome, tormenting me every single day! "I get up at 5:00 am every day to cook for him, yet he doesn't even appreciate it. He always complains about this and that!"Hubert jerked his head up, glaring at her with bloodshot eyes. "That still doesn't give you the right to do something so monstrous to a child!"Maeve completely dropped her act. "I never intended to kill him. I just wanted him to slowly lose his mind and become a complete idiot. Once that happened, I could send him to a long-term care facility, and this family would finally be mine."Right after saying that, she suddenly caressed her stomach, a manic smile spreading across her face. "But I'm pregnant. I can't wait that long! I can't let my child be born and still

At that moment, everyone looked at me as if I were a lunatic.Hubert jeered out of sheer anger, pointing at me with a trembling finger. "You… are unbelievable! Officer, what are you waiting for? Take this madwoman away!"Captain Moore's forehead creased as well. "Watch your tongue, Dr. Young. Do you have any evidence?""The evidence is in the nut butter she made with her own hands!" I strode up to Maeve, looking her in the eye. "Instead of good-quality nuts, you used moldy, spoiled, low-quality ones!" I turned to Captain Moore and the crowd of onlookers, my voice ringing out loud and clear. "Moldy nuts contain high levels of aflatoxins. These are extremely toxic compounds and among the most potent carcinogens known. Consuming a large amount at once can cause acute poisoning. "However, if someone ingests it in small amounts every day, the toxins will slowly accumulate in the liver. The initial symptoms are fatigue and headaches, but the toxin levels are still too low to show up
