Chapter 4

Auteur: Busy Mouse
The door to the ward had been pushed open at some point, and the corridor was now packed with curious onlookers. Maeve's frail demeanor as she clutched her stomach won everyone's sympathy.

One of them began speaking up for her. "Does this person even know how to be a doctor? Because she can't figure out the cause of the illness, she just throws dirt on the patient's family and blames them? How outrageous! Officer, hurry up and look into whether she's just trying to shirk responsibility because of her own poor medical skills!"

After hearing the crowd's support, a triumphant glint flashed in Maeve's eyes. Biting her lower lip, she looked as though she'd endured this injustice for a long time. "Ten days ago, I brought Lennon here to see Dr. Young.

"He was already complaining of a stomachache back then, but she didn't even run a single test; she took one look at him and said he was pretending to be sick just to skip school. Then, she forced us to leave and sent us home!"

The crowd outside erupted the moment the words left her mouth.

"My goodness! She brought him here ten days ago? Isn't this essentially a misdiagnosis?"

"He had stomach pain, yet she claimed he was faking it? What kind of quack is she?"

Maeve's tears streamed down her face in large droplets. "Now, she's afraid she'll be held responsible for misdiagnosing him back then, so she's accusing me—the stepmother—of poisoning him! Dr. Young, how can you be so cruel? Are you seriously going to destroy our family just to protect your own career?"

Hubert, who was beside him, completely lost it. He jabbed his finger at my nose and bellowed, "Ten days ago, you were the one who delayed Lennon's treatment, and now you're attempting to accuse my wife of murder! Officer, she filed a false report to frame us. I'm going to report you to the State Medical Board until your license is revoked!"

Everyone in the ward stared at me with the same look they would give a murderer. However, at that moment, I didn't feel a single flicker of emotion.

I took a step forward and closed the distance between Maeve and myself. My gaze landed on her slightly protruding belly, deliberately raising my voice. "Ms. Brown, you put on quite a performance. Now that you have a child of your own, the stepchild in front of you has naturally become a nuisance, hasn't he? It looks like you're in a hurry to clear the way for the legitimate heir growing inside you."

Maeve's face flushed crimson when I exposed her true intentions. She immediately snapped back at me, "Nonsense! Ever since I married into the White family, I've treated Lennon like my own son. Even after I found out I was pregnant, I've never mistreated him in the slightest!"

I leaned forward slightly, closing in on her and springing the ultimate trap. "Oh? Is that so? Since you're such an exceptional mother, I'd love to know how you usually treat this beloved son of yours. What kind of diet have you got him on that managed to drive his organs into total failure?"

Maeve glared at me maliciously, eagerly portraying herself as the victim while taking credit for her supposed devotion. "Lennon has always had a weak stomach, so I never allowed him to eat the junk from outside. Even when my morning sickness was at its worst, I still forced myself out of bed at 5:00 am every day to cook for him because I cared about his health!

"I baked him additive-free bread with my own hands, bought the most expensive mixed nuts, and ground them one by one to make homemade jam for him! I worked myself to the bone every single day, treating him like royalty, and now you're accusing me of poisoning him?"

Maeve cried her heart out. The patients outside the room were moved to tears. One after another, they started cursing at me, demanding that a malicious, cold-hearted doctor like me scram.

I narrowed my eyes, seizing on the crucial slip of her tongue. "You personally made him nut jam every day at 5:00 am, without fail, is that right?"

"That's right! I have nothing to hide!" Maeve lifted her chin, looking as though she had been deeply wronged.

Refusing to spare another glance at her hypocritical face, I shifted my gaze to the police officer beside us. "Captain Moore, you can officially arrest her now."

The entire room went radio silent. All the insults died in their throats.

Captain Moore was visibly caught off guard. His brows knitted as he asked, "What did you just say, Dr. Young?"

The triumphant glint in Maeve's eyes instantly froze. Then, she shrieked louder than before. "Have you lost your mind, Kyra Young? On what grounds are you arresting me?"

I took in her hysterical state and responded firmly, "On the grounds of what you just said. That sentence alone is irrefutable evidence that you intentionally committed murder!"

Once the dust settled on Maeve's case, I became an absolute legend at Citry Central Hospital. Not only did I clear my name from the false accusations that I was a quack, but I also somehow earned the impressive title of "The Sherlock Holmes of Medicine".Now, getting an appointment with me as a specialist was harder than purchasing a holiday train ticket. The moment new slots were released, they were completely booked in under three seconds flat. Even the hospital director had recently started grinning from ear to ear whenever he saw me; his smile lines looked like they could crush flies. He went around telling everyone that I was the backbone of the entire hospital. …I had just spent the better part of the day in outpatient care when a woman named Zoe Miller with a full head of tight perm curls sat in front of me, clutching her chest with a dismal look. "Dr. Young, you have to save me! I've been suffering from insomnia every single day lately. I can't get a wink of sleep throug

Just then, the cheerful chatter of Lennon's internal organs echoed in my ears. His liver exclaimed. "Detox complete! I'm back in tip-top shape and ready to work!"His stomach let out a contented sigh. "Dad personally made me a nutritious meal yesterday, Dr. Young. It was a little burnt, but it was so warm and comforting. It doesn't hurt anymore!"After hearing their lively voices, I gently ruffled his soft hair. Lennon's large eyes sparkled with a bright, luminous light. He didn't mention Maeve, but I was well aware that he understood everything. It was just that there were some things a ten-year-old child didn't yet know how to describe in words, nor did he know when the wounds would truly heal. Perhaps when he grew up, he would find his own answers. I bent down until we were at eye level and said softly, "Lennon, if you ever feel unwell again, promise me you'll tell your dad right away, okay?" Lennon nodded vigorously and buried his face in my white coat. I gently patte

Captain Moore's booming voice echoed loudly throughout the ward and down the corridor. "On March 14th, you searched, 'How much aflatoxin does a ten-year-old child need to ingest to cause chronic liver failure?' "On May 2nd, you searched, 'How to disguise acute poisoning as long-term dietary problems and avoid forensic detection?' "And just last night, you searched, 'If my stepson dies from illness, can I, his stepmother, inherit all of my husband's assets?'"As this string of ice-cold, ruthless search records was read aloud in public, Maeve's facade was exposed once and for all. "My goodness! This woman's pure evil!""She looked up how to poison a child and how to steal his inheritance? She's no stepmother; she's a snake in human skin!""She was willing to harm a ten-year-old child for money, and she still had the nerve to play the victim and claim it was all a misunderstanding!" The onlookers immediately erupted into an uproar. The way everyone looked at Maeve completely ch

Maeve's emotions reached a fever pitch, and she stepped on a spot of butter that had dripped onto the floor earlier and fell heavily to the ground. The very next second, a desperate cry echoed in my ears. "It hurts so much… Help, I'm hemorrhaging. The baby's slipping away!"My expression changed dramatically, and I immediately called out, "This is bad. She's miscarrying! Hurry up and call an ambulance!""My baby… Save my baby…" Maeve wheezed, digging her nails into the floor. She stretched out her blood-stained hand and tried her best to grasp Hubert's pant leg. "Save our baby… If I lose it, I'll have to go to prison… Save me…"Hubert looked down at the woman, who was struggling in the pool of blood, his eyes filled with nothing but cold indifference and disgust. "This is your retribution!" The ambulance arrived in no time. In a little more than an hour, Maeve found herself in the exact same position she had intended for Lennon—being placed on a stretcher and rushed through the

Maeve's eyes were filled with pure, unadulterated malice as she sneered, "Hubert, do you really think I want to be someone else's free babysitter? You're away on business trips all the time, gone for weeks at a stretch! That little brat is mischievous and troublesome, tormenting me every single day! "I get up at 5:00 am every day to cook for him, yet he doesn't even appreciate it. He always complains about this and that!"Hubert jerked his head up, glaring at her with bloodshot eyes. "That still doesn't give you the right to do something so monstrous to a child!"Maeve completely dropped her act. "I never intended to kill him. I just wanted him to slowly lose his mind and become a complete idiot. Once that happened, I could send him to a long-term care facility, and this family would finally be mine."Right after saying that, she suddenly caressed her stomach, a manic smile spreading across her face. "But I'm pregnant. I can't wait that long! I can't let my child be born and still

At that moment, everyone looked at me as if I were a lunatic.Hubert jeered out of sheer anger, pointing at me with a trembling finger. "You… are unbelievable! Officer, what are you waiting for? Take this madwoman away!"Captain Moore's forehead creased as well. "Watch your tongue, Dr. Young. Do you have any evidence?""The evidence is in the nut butter she made with her own hands!" I strode up to Maeve, looking her in the eye. "Instead of good-quality nuts, you used moldy, spoiled, low-quality ones!" I turned to Captain Moore and the crowd of onlookers, my voice ringing out loud and clear. "Moldy nuts contain high levels of aflatoxins. These are extremely toxic compounds and among the most potent carcinogens known. Consuming a large amount at once can cause acute poisoning. "However, if someone ingests it in small amounts every day, the toxins will slowly accumulate in the liver. The initial symptoms are fatigue and headaches, but the toxin levels are still too low to show up
