Chapter 2

Penulis: Cat and the Evening Star
The scraps of paper drifted through the air before settling at Wesley's polished shoes.

Everyone froze.

I brushed the paper scraps from my hands.

"Madelyn can have the position. And I'm not marrying him either."

Wesley's face turned ashen, the veins in his forehead bulging. "Savannah! Have you lost your mind? If you break off our engagement, who in Willowville would ever marry you?"

My mother was trembling with rage. Pointing toward the door, she shouted, "Get out! Just get out! From this day on, I'll pretend I never gave birth to you!"

Outside, the neighbors pointed and whispered among themselves. They bet I wouldn't last three days before hunger drove me back to Wesley, begging him to take me in.

I never looked back. I walked out of that house and headed for the farthest corner of Willowville, the place everyone avoided.

The air there always carried the mixed scent of motor oil and herbal medicine.

I pushed open the rickety wooden gate. The yard was piled high with old bicycle parts.

Logan Cross was crouched on the ground, shirtless, repairing a heavy roadster bicycle. Long, crisscrossing scars stretched across his back.

Everyone in Willowville said Logan was a rough ex-soldier who'd been kicked out of the military for disciplinary violations—a violent criminal who'd been sent away for reform.

Hearing me enter, he turned around. A long, faded scar ran from the corner of his right eye across his fierce-looking face.

He looked at me, his voice hoarse and grating. "Regular Willowville folks don't come back here. Don't you know the rules?"

I didn't back away. Stepping onto a pile of scrap metal, I took a step closer.

"Logan, do you need a wife?"

The wrench slipped from his hand and clattered onto the ground.

For the first time, something flickered in his eyes.

Logan rose to his feet. His tall frame swallowed me in shadow as his gaze locked onto my hands.

Hands covered in chilblains, split open and bleeding.

Everyone in Willowville saw nothing but a crude country girl.

Only he remembered.

Last month, when torrential rain flooded the neighborhood, and everyone hid indoors trying to save themselves, I was the only one digging out the drainage ditch with my bare hands.

I'd saved the crumbling houses behind Willowville.

I'd saved his pile of parts from being ruined as well.

Something dark churned in his eyes.

"Savannah, do you even know what you're saying? I've got nothing to my name. I left the military in disgrace. My reputation's ruined. If you marry me, you'll ruin the rest of your life."

I met his eyes without flinching. "I'm not afraid of a ruined reputation. I'm afraid of being blind to what's right in front of me. So, do you dare to marry me?"

Logan stared at me for a long ten seconds. Then he bent down, picked up the coarse work shirt draped over a bench, and pulled it on.

"Did you bring your ID?"

I pulled my identification from my pocket. "I did."

He strode toward the gate. As he passed me, he merely said, "Come."

The moment we signed our marriage license, I became Logan Cross's wife.

When we walked back into Willowville together, we ran straight into Wesley and Madelyn as they were heading out.

The moment Wesley spotted Logan beside me, he let out a scornful laugh.

"Savannah, if you're trying to make me jealous, you didn't have to stoop so low and end up with this ex-con. Within three days, you'll be on your knees begging me to take you back."

Hiding behind Wesley, Madelyn covered her mouth in mock alarm. "Savannah, being with someone this dangerous... Mom and Dad are going to be worried."

Before I could respond, a large hand settled firmly around my shoulders.

Patricia let out a scornful laugh and spat on the ground."You idiot. You treated your own daughter like a servant while you spoiled mine. If Madelyn hadn't been arrested, we would've kept living off your money for another ten years."Those words shattered my mother. Her eyes rolled back, and she collapsed. The doctors managed to save her life after a whole day of emergency treatment, but the shock left her partially paralyzed from a stroke. For the rest of her life, she would be confined to a bed, unable to care for herself. My father seemed to age overnight. His hair turned completely white. He came to the police station hoping to see me and beg for my forgiveness.I stood at the top of the station steps, looking down at him."So now you regret it? Too late. Fifteen years of suffering can't be erased with a single apology. You can spend the rest of your lives living with regret."Then I turned and walked away.As for Wesley, his punishment arrived right on schedule.Although

Life in military housing was peaceful. Our home was a two-story house with a spacious yard.Logan stuffed his savings passbook, ration coupons, and even his military medals into my camphor chest."What's mine is yours. Spend whatever you want."He left early every morning to train soldiers and came home late every evening. The first thing he did after walking through the door was head straight for the kitchen to cook for me.I no longer had to live by anyone else's rules or spend the dead of winter washing an entire family's laundry.I enrolled in night school, determined to reclaim the education I'd lost fifteen years ago.Meanwhile, life in Willowville only grew more miserable. After her engagement was called off, Madelyn became the laughingstock of Ashford Textiles. She constantly slacked off at work and helped herself to defective fabric from the factory.Back when Wesley had been protecting her, everyone had looked the other way. Now he could barely save himself. The plan

After the jeep drove away, the mood in Willowville changed completely. The same neighbors who had been calling Logan an ex-con moments earlier now crowded around, eager to get on his good side."I knew there was something special about Logan!""Savannah's so lucky. She's the wife of a decorated colonel now!"Logan paid no attention to the flattery. After accepting the documents, Logan returned Director Warren's salute before taking my hand."Director Warren, this is my wife, Savannah."Director Warren gave me a warm nod. "You've been through a lot. Quarters on base have already been arranged. You can move in whenever you're ready."Once Director Warren left, we headed back to pack our things. The three of them were still standing where they'd been, their expressions frozen. My mother's face was the worst; her eyes were filled with regret, greed, and calculation. In the end, blood meant nothing when there was something to gain.We had barely finished packing a suitcase when th

An autumn wind swept through the alley.Leaning against a weathered brick wall, Madelyn deliberately straightened her posture, putting on the picture of helpless innocence.Logan walked toward her, carrying two bags of salt, his eyes fixed straight ahead."Logan," Madelyn called out sweetly. Then she stumbled forward, throwing herself straight into his arms.Any other man might've been tempted.Logan wasn't. He stopped short and sidestepped without hesitation.Splash!Madelyn landed squarely in a muddy puddle, filthy water splattering all over her clothes. She grimaced in pain."Are you blind?" The curse flew out before she caught herself. An instant later, she hurriedly switched back to a pitiful expression. "Logan, I twisted my ankle. Could you help me up?"Looking down at her from above, Logan's expression remained cold. "Stay away from me."Without wasting another word, he turned and walked away.Still sitting in the mud, Madelyn trembled with rage. Ever since she was l

Wesley's shout cut through the stormy night. His entire body trembled. Cold sweat mixed with the rain running down his face, and he didn't dare look at Logan again.Logan casually tossed the towel back into the basin, splashing water onto Wesley's dress shoes."You've got the wrong man." His voice was calm. "There's no commanding officer living behind Willowville. Just an ex-soldier with a disciplinary record."Wesley swallowed hard. His legs had gone so weak that he could barely stay on his feet.He knew exactly what that insignia meant. It belonged to the military's most highly classified special operations unit. And Logan was the Living Reaper himself. The rumors were true.He had disobeyed a direct order to abandon his position, staying behind with his men to hold off the main force of a cross-border drug cartel so civilians could escape. The disciplinary action had been real. So were the lives he'd saved.Every word of pity Wesley had thrown at Logan moments earlier now

A cold wind swept in with the autumn rain, making the oil lamp on the table flicker wildly.Wesley stood in the doorway, drenched from head to toe. His bloodshot eyes burned with obsession. His chest heaved as he stared into the room."Savannah! Haven't you made enough of a scene?" His voice was hoarse, choked with emotion yet still dripping with arrogance."It's been three months. This little game of playing hard to get has gone on long enough. I know you've been miserable. I know you've been waiting every day for me to come get you."He strode over the threshold, shot Logan a look of disgust as he knelt on the floor washing my feet, then kicked the edge of the battered wooden washbasin.Water splashed across the floor."Savannah, are you really going to waste your life in this dump that can't even afford electricity, living with some ex-con?"Madelyn's immature. She doesn't know how to take care of anyone. She isn't fit to shine your shoes. I was wrong, Savannah. I really regr
