Chapter 3

Author: Cat and the Evening Star
Logan pulled me into his arms, his gaze raking across Wesley's face.

"Point at my wife one more time. I dare you."

The murderous edge in Logan's voice made Wesley stumble backward, nearly tripping over the doorstep. He immediately shut his mouth.

I took Logan's hand and walked toward the back of Willowville without looking back.

The moment the rickety wooden gate closed behind us, the mocking voices from outside were completely shut out.

Logan lowered his eyes to me, his voice deep. "From now on, my life belongs to you."

His gaze drifted toward the direction Wesley had left. His rough thumb gently brushed across the wounds on my palm.

"As for everyone out there, they'll repay everything they owe you—with interest."

Life after our marriage was nothing like the people in Willowville had predicted. In fact, they were the happiest three months I'd had in fifteen years.

Logan was up before dawn every morning, filling the water barrels and stacking the chopped firewood into neat piles.

When most families were surviving on beans and cornbread, my meals included fresh bread and pot roast.

One day, he handed me a metal cash box stuffed with money and ration coupons, telling me to take charge of the household.

A few days later, he reached into the bottom of that same box, pulled out a brand-new wristwatch, and fastened it around my wrist before I could protest. Madelyn had begged Wesley for three months to buy her the very same watch. He'd always refused, saying it was too expensive.

Meanwhile, life at the front of Willowville had descended into chaos.

Madelyn got exactly what she wanted—the position at Ashford Textile Mill.

However, after less than two weeks, she'd wandered away from her station and damaged the mill's only jacquard loom. The plant manager flew into a rage. Not only did he dock six months' wages, but he also reassigned her to the boiler room to shovel coal.

Every evening, she came home covered in soot, her dresses burned full of holes from flying cinders. Soon she was smashing things around the house and fighting with my parents.

Wesley's life wasn't any easier.

Madelyn couldn't even fry an egg, yet she constantly demanded he buy her one thing after another to make up for everything she'd suffered. His meager intern's salary couldn't keep up with her demands.

A few times while I was washing clothes by the well, I'd see Wesley returning home in a wrinkled shirt, looking utterly exhausted.

Whenever he caught sight of my new clothes and the watch on my wrist, his face twisted with resentment.

He began lingering outside the gate to the back of Willowville, convinced Logan must have been abusing me.

He refused to believe my happiness was real. In his mind, a woman like me could never be happy with a rough man like Logan. Surely I was only pretending and was waiting for him to rescue me.

One drizzly evening in late autumn, I got caught in the rain.

The old injury in my ankle flared up so badly that I couldn't walk. Without a word, Logan heated a basin of water and carried it to the bedside. His callused hands carefully cradled my foot as he tested the water's temperature.

Just then, hurried footsteps echoed outside. Mixed with them came Wesley's heavy breathing.

He'd finally convinced himself he'd found the perfect chance to swoop in and pity me from his lofty perch.

Bang!

With one violent kick, Wesley sent the wooden gate flying open at the back of Willowville.

Patricia let out a scornful laugh and spat on the ground."You idiot. You treated your own daughter like a servant while you spoiled mine. Her eyes rolled back, and she collapsed. The doctors managed to save her life after a whole day of emergency treatment, but the shock left her partially paralyzed from a stroke. For the rest of her life, she would be confined to a bed, unable to care for herself. My father seemed to age overnight. His hair turned completely white. He came to the police station hoping to see me and beg for my forgiveness.I stood at the top of the station steps, looking down at him."So now you regret it? Too late. Fifteen years of suffering can't be erased with a single apology. You can spend the rest of your lives living with regret."Then I turned and walked away.As for Wesley, his punishment arrived right on schedule.Although

Life in military housing was peaceful. Our home was a two-story house with a spacious yard.Logan stuffed his savings passbook, ration coupons, and even his military medals into my camphor chest."What's mine is yours. Spend whatever you want."He left early every morning to train soldiers and came home late every evening. The first thing he did after walking through the door was head straight for the kitchen to cook for me.I no longer had to live by anyone else's rules or spend the dead of winter washing an entire family's laundry.I enrolled in night school, determined to reclaim the education I'd lost fifteen years ago.Meanwhile, life in Willowville only grew more miserable. After her engagement was called off, Madelyn became the laughingstock of Ashford Textiles. She constantly slacked off at work and helped herself to defective fabric from the factory.Back when Wesley had been protecting her, everyone had looked the other way. Now he could barely save himself. The plan

After the jeep drove away, the mood in Willowville changed completely. The same neighbors who had been calling Logan an ex-con moments earlier now crowded around, eager to get on his good side."I knew there was something special about Logan!""Savannah's so lucky. She's the wife of a decorated colonel now!"Logan paid no attention to the flattery. After accepting the documents, Logan returned Director Warren's salute before taking my hand."Director Warren, this is my wife, Savannah."Director Warren gave me a warm nod. "You've been through a lot. Quarters on base have already been arranged. You can move in whenever you're ready."Once Director Warren left, we headed back to pack our things. The three of them were still standing where they'd been, their expressions frozen. My mother's face was the worst; her eyes were filled with regret, greed, and calculation. In the end, blood meant nothing when there was something to gain.We had barely finished packing a suitcase when th

An autumn wind swept through the alley.Leaning against a weathered brick wall, Madelyn deliberately straightened her posture, putting on the picture of helpless innocence.Logan walked toward her, carrying two bags of salt, his eyes fixed straight ahead."Logan," Madelyn called out sweetly. Then she stumbled forward, throwing herself straight into his arms.Any other man might've been tempted.Logan wasn't. He stopped short and sidestepped without hesitation.Splash!Madelyn landed squarely in a muddy puddle, filthy water splattering all over her clothes. She grimaced in pain."Are you blind?" The curse flew out before she caught herself. An instant later, she hurriedly switched back to a pitiful expression. "Logan, I twisted my ankle. Could you help me up?"Looking down at her from above, Logan's expression remained cold. "Stay away from me."Without wasting another word, he turned and walked away.Still sitting in the mud, Madelyn trembled with rage. Ever since she was l

Wesley's shout cut through the stormy night. His entire body trembled. Cold sweat mixed with the rain running down his face, and he didn't dare look at Logan again.Logan casually tossed the towel back into the basin, splashing water onto Wesley's dress shoes."You've got the wrong man." His voice was calm. "There's no commanding officer living behind Willowville. Just an ex-soldier with a disciplinary record."Wesley swallowed hard. His legs had gone so weak that he could barely stay on his feet.He knew exactly what that insignia meant. It belonged to the military's most highly classified special operations unit. And Logan was the Living Reaper himself. The rumors were true.He had disobeyed a direct order to abandon his position, staying behind with his men to hold off the main force of a cross-border drug cartel so civilians could escape. The disciplinary action had been real. So were the lives he'd saved.Every word of pity Wesley had thrown at Logan moments earlier now

A cold wind swept in with the autumn rain, making the oil lamp on the table flicker wildly.Wesley stood in the doorway, drenched from head to toe. His bloodshot eyes burned with obsession. His chest heaved as he stared into the room."Savannah! Haven't you made enough of a scene?" His voice was hoarse, choked with emotion yet still dripping with arrogance."It's been three months. This little game of playing hard to get has gone on long enough. I know you've been miserable. I know you've been waiting every day for me to come get you."He strode over the threshold, shot Logan a look of disgust as he knelt on the floor washing my feet, then kicked the edge of the battered wooden washbasin.Water splashed across the floor."Savannah, are you really going to waste your life in this dump that can't even afford electricity, living with some ex-con?"Madelyn's immature. She doesn't know how to take care of anyone. She isn't fit to shine your shoes. I was wrong, Savannah. I really regr
