Chapter 4

Penulis: Starry Dream
Kendrick said, “Fine! I’ll leave. Let me see how long you can keep being this stubborn.”

With that, he turned and left.

The next morning, Kendrick’s mother, Trisha Grundy, called my mother.

“I don’t mean to sound harsh, but your daughter’s photos are all over the internet. Our family can’t take that kind of humiliation. We’re calling off the engagement.”

My mother tried to explain that the photos were fake and digitally fabricated, but Trisha just hung up ruthlessly.

Because of this uproar, I lost my fiance, my business, and my life fell apart.

But Rosalind did not let up.

She made eight complaint calls a day and even rallied other residents to join in.

The health department showed up, then the fire marshal. Even the city inspectors arrived one day to inspect my shop.

They tore the shop apart searching for violations, but all my permits were in order, and they found nothing wrong.

As the inspectors were leaving, one of them pulled me aside and said, “Miss, your place has no violations at all.

“But we’ve gotten way too many complaints. Our bosses need us to show we did something about it.

“Maybe shut down for now, let the heat die down, and we’ll revisit it later.”

I also went to the police station to ask about the case.

The officer hesitated but ultimately said, “AI-generated images do count as potential defamation, and we are looking into it.

“But she never directly named you, which makes it tough to gather solid evidence.

“Plus, it’s hard to go after everyone involved. In the end, cases like this almost always just get settled through mediation.”

So far, they had asked me to shut down my studio, mediate, or just work it out among ourselves.

I let out a cold, bitter laugh.

I never expected the system to be just like Kendrick. They all wanted me to back down.

I refused to give in.

But even if I could hold my ground, my parents could not.

My mother had been in the walking club for five years. She was kicked out of it.

The leader, Elaine Barnes, said, “Your daughter is a bad influence. Having you around makes us uncomfortable.”

My father had been an honest, unassuming man his whole life. But at work, people openly mocked him for failing to raise his daughter properly.

When they came home, they pretended like everything was fine.

My mother, Mabel Flavell, said, “It’s fine. It’s just a walking club. I can do it on my own.

“Don’t worry about us. Just focus on handling your own situation.”

My father, Arthur Flavell, said, “Sweetheart, don’t you worry. I believe in you.”

They said it so casually, but I knew they felt humiliated.

That night, I crouched in the corner of my studio, buried my face in my knees, and sobbed until I could barely breathe.

My parents had done nothing wrong. Why did they have to suffer for my sake?

I wiped away my tears and made a decision.

The next day, I stopped Rosalind in the neighborhood town square.

I kept my head down and pulled out three thousand dollars in cash.

“Rosalind, this is the money for the cake you ordered last time. Three thousand dollars covers the cake and everything else.

“I’m sorry I didn’t handle this issue properly and put you through so much trouble.”

At that moment, I felt like I was being publicly humiliated. I was groveling in front of the whole neighborhood.

Rosalind smiled and said, “Fine. Since you’re being sincere, I guess I’ll let it slide.”

She put away that sum of money and paused as if holding something back.

“For Marvin’s birthday, I want to do something huge for him. Make a ten-thousand-dollar money-pull cake.”

I narrowed my eyes.

I had expected this. Someone like her always knew how to push her luck.

Give her an inch, and she would take a mile.

That suited me perfectly.

I quickly put on a fawning look and said, “Tell you what, Rosalind. I’ll make that ten-thousand-dollar pull-out-money cake for you. It’s on the house.”

I would make this cake beautifully without skimping on anything.

This cake would be my “congratulatory gift” to her entire family.

“Every shop in this neighborhood that you extorted, including the dry cleaner, the fruit stall, the hardware store, and the convenience store, must be visited door to door. “You will pay them all back and apologize to their faces.“You’ll publicly clarify that the photo of me you posted in the group was AI-generated.”Rosalind collapsed on the floor. Her lips trembled, and she said nothing for a long while.Margaret grew anxious. “But that’ll humiliate us in front of everyone!”I smiled and said, “Is that so? Then, you and your husband can both rot in prison together.”Rosalind was silent for a long time.In the end, she nodded. The next day, she and Margaret went door to door to apologize. They visited every single shop that had been extorted and gave them a full refund. Then, at the busiest hour in the town square, they admitted their wrongs.“I paid someone to make the photo with AI. Aurelia never did any of that. I tried to extort her, and when that didn’t work, I set

I stood there and tilted my head slightly, with a puzzled expression on my face.“Rosalind, didn’t you just tell everyone here that you set aside ten thousand dollars as a birthday gift for your husband?“Everyone here heard that, right? Rosalind said it herself, and her husband personally pocketed the cash.”Rosalind was speechless. “You!”I waved my hand dismissively.“I actually thought it was odd at the time. Rosalind usually haggles for twenty percent off even on a hundred-and-twenty-eight-dollar cake. Why, then, did she suddenly insist on ordering a ten-thousand-dollar money-pull cake?”I paused and turned to look at the police.“Then, it hit me! Ten thousand dollars in cash gets pulled out of that cake and handed around in front of a room full of people. “Just like that, questionable money looks like a legitimate birthday gift. Who’s going to question that?“Isn’t that exactly what money laundering is?”The room fell completely silent.Rosalind began to tremble uncon

Rosalind’s smile froze on her face.“What? What are you talking about?!”I looked her right in the eye and said in a calm voice, “I said that ten thousand dollars inside the cake is mine.”Everyone in the room turned to look at me.“Rosalind, you took three thousand dollars from me as compensation, but that wasn’t enough for you. “You threw a fit until I agreed to make you the ten-thousand-dollar money-pull cake for free. So, if anyone’s giving a gift here, it’s me. I gave that gift to your husband.”Her face went from pale to red, then darkened with fury. She slammed her wine glass onto the table and shouted, “Nonsense! I ordered this cake from you, so the money inside is obviously mine! This is the ten-thousand-dollar birthday gift I specially prepared for my husband!“I can’t believe someone as young as you is so good at twisting things around and playing the victim!”She turned to the guests and jabbed a finger at me.“Everyone, take a good look! This is the same homewre

I could hear Rosalind’s shrill voice.“Everyone, enjoy the food and drink. Hang tight! I’ve got a huge surprise for all of you later!”I took a deep breath and knocked on the door. The moment the door opened, Rosalind yelled, “What took you so long?!“What time did I tell you to be here? Why did you take your own sweet time to get here? You think I’m a pushover or something?”She turned to the room full of guests, raised her voice a notch, and played the victim as she said, “Everyone, take a good look! I’ve been supporting her business all along. “If I hadn’t vouched for her in the group chat, her little studio would’ve gone under ages ago. Now, she dares to show up late with the cake! Who does she think she is?”Margaret sat right in the middle of the couch, legs crossed, and chimed in, “Exactly! Let me tell you something. “There are important people at this birthday party. Don’t you dare think you can go fishing for clients here. We all know what kind of business you’re rea

The moment I agreed, Rosalind instantly became smug. She tapped the table as she said condescendingly, “Good. You know what’s best for you. “I assume the required ten thousand dollars is coming out of your pocket too. Don’t you dare try any funny business this time.”I lowered my gaze to hide the cold gleam in my eyes and said, “Of course! So, when would you like the cake?”Clearly enjoying how compliant I was being, she said arrogantly, “Marvin’s birthday is next Wednesday. Deliver it to our door that night, right on time.“Remember, that cake better be layered to the nines. The more extravagant, the better.“I want everyone to see how much Marvin adores me and how good I am to him.”With that, she strutted away, looking very pleased with herself. The moment she left, the smile vanished from my face.Rosalind truly thought I was a total pushover.Little did she know that her greed would end up ruining her whole family.Earlier, when I had refunded her money, Rosalind’s mo
