‘Why do you even have to think about Alexa? Don’t you know I’m only using her?’
‘She’s good at dealing with clients. I’ve gained so many benefits from her hard work. And she owns shares in your family’s company—I can take them over after we get married. Once I get all the benefits I want, I’ll leave her and marry you.’
Bastard!
Alexa clenched her fists tightly at her sides, her face hardening as her jaw tensed while she recalled the words she had overheard some time ago.
The voices were sharp and piercing, making it difficult for Alexa to drive them away. They continued to echo, stabbing at her ears.
The sound of Alexa Ivander’s footsteps—a twenty-seven-year-old woman—rang sharply as her heels struck the marble floor of the Alistair family company lobby.
For the past three years, this company had been her workplace, after she was rejected from entering her father’s company and belittled by her own father.
Alexa clenched her fists even tighter, her teeth grinding together. Her chest throbbed painfully as the sounds of the two shameless people burned into her ears.
Her eyes had been stained by the indecent scene between her fiancé-to-be—Ronan—and Felicya—Alexa’s stepsister—in the apartment that should have been the most comfortable place for Alexa to return to someday, once she married Ronan.
However, all those dreams vanished when Alexa came to the apartment to share the good news about her success in securing a major client who agreed to cooperate because of Alexa’s competence and warm demeanor.
Should Alexa consider this a disaster or a stroke of luck—for discovering the affair between her fiancé and her stepsister before her relationship with Ronan went any further?
She wanted nothing more than to punch Ronan in the face and yank Felicya’s long hair to punish them both. But Alexa realized that acting on impulse was not the right move at this moment.
She had to remain calm, because she knew that if she attacked them, she would still be the one blamed.
A bitter smile appeared on Alexa’s face. She was a biological child treated like a stepchild. Her father now loved and protected Felicya more than her, simply because of Felicya’s sweet tongue.
Damn it. Why did Alexa have to be in this position?
She took a deep breath and slowly exhaled as her hand gently pushed open the door to the HR department, startling the staff inside with her sudden presence.
“Ms. Alexa, what brings you here?”
Everyone knew who Alexa was—the assistant to Ronan who had significantly elevated the Alistair company’s reputation over the past two years.
Forcing a smile to suppress the emotions threatening to explode in her head, Alexa said, “I want to resign.”
Seeing the shocked look on the HR manager’s face, Alexa continued, “Ronan already knows, and he agrees. I just need the termination letter from you.”
“B-but why? Is there a reason?”
Hearing the question, Alexa’s smile thinned. “There’s no particular reason. I want to return to my father’s company.”
Her smile was filled with hatred and resentment. She struggled to remain calm amid the turmoil raging in her mind.
After obtaining the termination letter, Alexa walked out of the Alistair building. She got into the car parked in front but did not leave immediately. Instead, she dialed a number from the business card clenched between her fingers.
“Hello, Mr. Devan. This is Alexa Ivander. Do you have any free time today? I would like to meet you.”
“Alexa Ivander, what makes you think you want—and can—meet me?”
Alexa gripped the business card tightly. Her chest felt unbearably heavy, her breath hitching as she remembered the reason she had to meet Devan Alistair—Ronan’s uncle, who had only returned from abroad a few months ago and owned a company just like the Alistair family’s.
Trying to stay composed and push away all the pain she felt, Alexa said, “I have something that would be very beneficial to you. Would you be interested in hearing it?”
Franklin reached for the document lying beside his coffee cup.His eyes scanned each line of legal text, and within seconds, the color drained from his face."Your... your mother's will?" Franklin muttered, his voice suddenly hoarse."Yes," Alexa replied, folding her arms across her chest. "Mother's condition was that I had to be legally married. Now I'm married to Devan. That means ownership of this house and all of Mother's properties has officially been transferred to me. It also clearly states that if I choose to, I have the legal right to require anyone with no rightful claim to leave these premises."Alexa cast Olivia a faint, triumphant smile before turning back to Franklin."You should remember who this house originally belonged to, Father. Mother owned it long before she married you."Olivia froze at Alexa's words and turned toward Franklin, who remained silent."Franklin! What does it say? Don't just sit there!" Olivia demanded anxiously. She snatched the document from her h
That morning, the conference room of the city's premier law firm felt unusually cold.Alexa sat upright beside Devan, her eyes fixed on the thick stack of documents a middle-aged man wearing glasses had carefully placed on the marble table. The man was the attorney who had faithfully served Alexa's late mother for more than a decade."I've reviewed every document once again, Miss Alexa," the attorney said as he opened the first black leather folder. "According to Clause Five of your late mother's will, full ownership of the primary assets—including fifty percent of the shares in Ivander Group and the family's three core properties—will be transferred to you once your marriage has been legally registered."Alexa glanced briefly at Devan before turning back to her mother's attorney."And the marriage documents Devan's legal team submitted yesterday... they meet all the requirements?""They do, Miss. Completely."The attorney smiled faintly before sliding a sealed document and a silver f
At the Ivander family's main residence, the morning silence was suddenly shattered by the sharp clink of a spoon striking a porcelain plate.Franklin sat at the head of the dining table, his phone lit up beside his cup of coffee. His aging eyes stared at the screen in disbelief. The day's headline was displayed prominently, announcing the marriage of his biological daughter, Alexa, to the highest leader of DEV. Group.Olivia kept her mouth tightly shut. She briefly glanced at Felicya, who was also seated at the table, before looking back at her husband anxiously. The atmosphere in the room instantly became tense and suffocating after they saw the shocking news.Bang!Franklin slammed his palm onto the dining table. The impact was so hard that several cups on the table trembled."That girl has truly gone too far!" Franklin growled, his breathing turning ragged as anger rushed to his head. His fingers curled tightly into fists until his knuckles turned pale. "How could she get married w
The next morning. The sun had barely risen when a piece of news shook the entire nation.A major business news outlet released a headline in bold letters:"DEV. Group's Supreme Leader, Devan Alistair, Officially Announces His Marriage to Alexa Ivander, the Young Lady of the Ivander Family."At the Alistair family's main residence, the peaceful breakfast atmosphere suddenly turned gloomy."What does this mean?!" Daniel frowned as he read the news. Devan—his half-brother from the same father but a different mother—had married Alexa, the woman who was supposed to marry his son, Ronan.Martha remained silent as she read the same article on her phone. She was equally shocked. According to the report, Devan and Alexa had been married long before Alexa and Ronan's engagement was called off."How is this possible?" Martha looked utterly incredulous. At that moment, Ronan had just arrived in the dining room. He immediately noticed the tense expressions on his parents' faces.Especially Daniel'
Alexa lowered her gaze to the ring on her finger, tangible proof of the bond she shared with Devan.Yes, perhaps it really was time to make their marriage public—for the benefit of both of them.Slowly, Alexa looked up at Devan. "I don't mind. This is actually what I need right now."One of Devan's brows lifted as he studied the change in Alexa's expression. There was a trace of sorrow in her eyes."What's wrong?" he asked. "Is there another problem?""My mother's will," Alexa replied quietly. She tightened her grip on the edge of the blanket covering her legs and took a deep breath before continuing."My mother left me a considerable inheritance. But there are conditions attached to it."Her gaze grew even more distant."I can only claim the family's main assets in full if I'm legally married or at least have a life partner who is committed to spending the future with me.""And you've been hiding this because you didn't trust anyone?" Devan immediately guessed. His tone was probing b
The bedroom felt unusually quiet, filled only with the faint ticking of the wall clock and Alexa's soft breathing as she finally drifted into sleep.Devan remained seated at the edge of the bed, his gaze fixed on his wife's pale face. Alexa's fingers were still loosely wrapped around his wrist, as though she feared that if she let go for even a moment, he would disappear.Devan let out a quiet sigh. With his free hand, he gently brushed a few strands of hair away from Alexa's forehead. A strange warmth lingered in his chest, accompanied by a powerful protective instinct. He silently swore that he would never allow anyone to hurt Alexa again. While he was still watching over her, the phone in his jacket pocket vibrated softly.Moving as carefully as possible so he wouldn't wake her, Devan slowly slipped his wrist from Alexa's grasp. He stood up and walked toward the bedroom balcony. After closing the glass door behind him, he answered the call."Well, Mike?" Devan's voice was calm but
