I couldn't believe my eyes as I looked at the two figures holding hands not far away.

The grueling 16-hour flight had left me dizzy and disoriented, to the point where I hoped I was just hallucinating.

"Isn't Henry supposed to be on a business trip in Sarovia? Coming back now is just asking for humiliation."

"He's a company veteran, and he just got replaced by some random newcomer. This is going to be a shitshow."

The hushed whispers of my former colleagues drifted over, accompanied by a barrage of judgmental stares.

Gabriel Watson strolled casually over to me with a smug grin.

"Henry! When did you get back? You should've told us so we could throw you a welcome party. But looking at you… I guess that overseas deal fell through, huh? Man, what a shame. But don't worry. Sharon and I won't hold it against you."

I slapped his hand off my shoulder.

His smile flickered, replaced instantly by a look of aggrieved innocence. "Are you mad at me for taking the position that was supposed to be yours? Look, I'll give it back. I just don't want any bad blood between us."

He reached up, making a show of taking off his executive badge.

My wife, Sharon Lloyd, who had been silent until now, rushed over and grabbed his hand.

"Gabriel, what are you doing? He's just a low-level employee. He doesn't have the right to question company promotions."

She turned her icy glare at me. "You lost the deal, and you actually have the nerve to show your face here? I told you not to go, but you just had to play the hero and run off to Sarovia. Now you've ruined our relationship with our biggest client, and you still expect a seat on the board?"

While listening to her baseless accusations, I almost wanted to laugh.

She was the one who had complained about how crucial and difficult the Sarovia account was and said she couldn't trust anyone else with it. That was the only reason I volunteered.

Before I left, she promised me that win or lose, my standing in the company wouldn't change. She said that the moment I got back, she would promote me to the board so we could run our business side by side.

And what did I actually come back to?

Gabriel was just a newcomer with a degree from some third-rate college overseas, hired out of nowhere into an industry he knew nothing about.

He never contributed to a single major project. He spent his days barking orders and throwing his weight around. Everyone kept quiet only because of his personal connection with Sharon.

Whenever things went wrong, he would spin some sob story, convincing Sharon that he was the real victim.

Meanwhile, my years of silent, thankless grind had earned me nothing but contempt—Just like now.

Gabriel muttered a soft explanation, "I just don't want the team to resent me."

He shrank back behind Sharon, nervously wringing his hands. Anyone else would have thought he was being horribly bullied.

Sharon's brow furrowed, and her voice turned razor-sharp. "Anyone who doesn't like it can pack their bags and leave!

"And Henry Palmer, let me remind you. I am the CEO of this company. If I want him on the board, he's on the board. You don't get a say."

The room went dead silent. No one dared to breathe, terrified of losing their jobs.

As I looked at her serious expression, a bitter smile suddenly broke across my lips.

When she first said she wanted to start a business, I cut ties with my family just to pour my entire life savings into her dream.

When we got scammed by a manufacturer early on and lost half a million dollars, I was the one who got down on my knees to beg investors for an extension.

Once the company finally got on track, I spent endless days and nights writing proposals and visiting factories.

I poured my blood, sweat, and tears into this place, asking for nothing in return except to see Sharon happy.

Ashlyn and I looked like an old married couple who had been deeply in love for years. She told me that she had actually been keeping an eye on my marriage with Sharon all those years. In fact, she had noticed Gabriel's presence even before I did.She had even tried to drop subtle hints to me during a high school reunion, but I had been too dense to ever read between the lines.I simply smiled when I heard that. "I suppose that's just how fate works."Fortunately, fate brought me to Ashlyn in the end.My parents absolutely adored her. Every single time they called, they would relentlessly badger us to have a child while we were still young. Not wanting to place any unnecessary pressure on Ashlyn, I always brushed their comments off with half-hearted answers. Our married life turned out to be incredibly harmonious. Ashlyn did her best to cut down on her international trips, and on weekends, she would take the initiative to cook for me.Even though the two of us managed to turn the

Ashlyn and I embraced in the snow, kissing under the fireworks.I finally felt a spark of hope for the future.…Everything moved at a breakneck pace once we committed to each other.Within three short days, our parents had already set the wedding date for early March.Ashlyn became incredibly swamped in the month leading up to the big day. I knew she was putting in extra hours to clear her schedule for the wedding, so I took charge of the planning, handling everything from the venue arrangements to the guest invitations. On the night before the wedding, my phone rang. After a long moment of hesitation, I answered. It was Sharon. She didn't speak right away. Through the receiver, I could only hear her faint breathing and intermittent, stifled sobs."If you don't have anything to say, I'm hanging up," I said."Wait."Sharon finally found her voice. She sounded intoxicated, as her words were slightly slurred. "Gabriel's case is wrapped up. He got ten years. He was just using m

"Maybe we can give it a shot," I said.Ashlyn froze before turning back to look at me in utter disbelief. "Are you serious?""I never joke about this stuff."The next second, she threw her arms around my neck. Her voice was thick with excitement as she said, "Thank you."I watched her walk inside before driving home. The moment I stepped through the door, Mom demanded to know how it went.I nodded. "I told her we could start dating and see where it goes. I'll keep you posted.""I knew you two would click! I really like her, you know. That's exactly why I put her photo right on top. Turns out my intuition is right."I gave her a helpless look.I had genuinely believed my reunion with Ashlyn was a twist of fate, having no idea that Mom had orchestrated the whole thing.…After that day, Ashlyn and I kept in constant touch. But because I was busy with work, my replies were often intermittent, and she seemed even busier than I was. After all, she was a lawyer and a famous one

Seeing how things had played out, the man didn't dare cross me and slunk away in embarrassment."Thank you, Henry," Sharon said. She tightly clenched her hands in front of her, and her voice trembled, likely from fear."I just happened to be passing by. I didn't expect to run into you here. Just be careful from now on," I said. She called out to me again and jogged to catch up."Back when you were still at the company, there was a batch of raw materials and finished goods left in the warehouse. Since all the clients have canceled their contracts, we haven't been able to deliver them. You inspected those goods yourself, so you know the quality is absolutely flawless."Henry, would you be willing to help me just one more time? I swear this is the absolute last time. If you buy these finished goods under Mirelix Group's name, you won't lose a thing, but it will literally save my life."Right now, she was like a drowning person clutching at a straw, refusing to let go.Just then,

"I only came because it was you," Ashlyn said.Actually, she had confessed her feelings to me after graduating from high school. But back then, my mind was entirely focused on rushing home to play video games, and I hadn't paid much attention to any of the female students in our class over those three years.I felt like we hadn't even exchanged more than ten sentences throughout all of high school. Not wanting to waste her time, I had turned her down without hesitation.Once we went off to college, our only connection was occasional interactions in our class group chat, and we had only crossed paths a few times at school reunions. Even then, Ashlyn was always the one to initiate the conversation.I stared at her in utter shock and blurted out, "What did you say?"Ashlyn straightened her posture, and her expression turned a fraction more serious."I've actually been keeping tabs on you these past few years. I never truly forgot about you. But because you were married, I knew it

Sharon merely shook her head in silence.By the time all the paperwork was processed, it was already 10:30 am.After glancing at the time, I turned to look at Sharon and gave a brief wave.I silently hoped that our paths would never cross again. The moment I got back home, Mom shoved a stack of photos into my arms. As I flipped through them with a bewildered expression, she eagerly started pitching them in my ear."Take a look at these young ladies! See if any of them catch your eye, and I can set you up!"I closed my eyes in exasperation. "Mom, I literally just got divorced. Can you give it a rest for a bit?"That marriage had drained every last drop of energy out of me, and I had honestly resigned myself to the idea of spending the rest of my life alone. But Mom gripped my arm tightly and pouted in dissatisfaction at my response. "Absolutely not! Leon is determined to stay single, but your dad and I are still waiting for grandchildren. Aren't you supposed to be starting a new
