POV: Ava Carter

The puck hit my stick and the world went quiet. That is what happens to me every single time. The crowd disappears. The shouting disappears. It is just me, the ice, and the net sitting wide open like a door I was born to walk through.

I pushed off hard and flew. My skates cut into the ice. My legs burned. The defender on my left was big, fast, and mean. He lunged for me. I faked right, spun left, and left him grabbing nothing but cold air. The goalie dropped into position, watching me with sharp eyes.

I pulled my stick back.

The puck screamed across the ice and buried itself in the top right corner of the net. The sound it made hitting the back of the goal was the most beautiful sound in the world.

Then the crowd exploded.

"NOAH! NOAH! NOAH!"

I lifted my arms. My heart was slamming against my ribs. My lungs were on fire. Every single part of me was alive and electric and burning bright.

But they were not cheering for me. They were cheering for Noah Carter.

My brother.

Whose jersey I was wearing. Whose name was on my back. Whose documents were folded carefully in the bag sitting in the players tunnel. Whose face everyone expected to see when the helmet came off.

++++++

Three weeks earlier, I was standing in our kitchen watching my brother hold a letter like it was a piece of hot coal he wanted to drop.

The envelope was white and clean with the Falcons Academy crest stamped in silver on the front. Falcons Academy. The best junior hockey program in the country. The place that launched careers. The place that made players into legends.

It said Noah Carter on the front. But I had wanted that letter my whole life.

"It came," Noah said. His voice was flat.

"Open it," I said.

He tore it open slowly. His eyes moved across the page. Then he put it down on the counter and walked to the window and stared outside at nothing.

"Noah." I grabbed the letter.

Dear Mr. Carter, we are pleased to offer you a full position at Falcons Academy starting this fall.

My hands were shaking. My eyes burned. I read the line three times. Then I looked up at my brother.

"This is it," I whispered. "This is everything."

"I know," he said. He would not look at me.

"Then why do you look like someone died?"

He turned around and his face was tight and pale. "Because I don't want it, Ava."

The kitchen went very still.

"What?" I said.

"I never wanted it. That was always your dream. Not mine. I played because Dad wanted me to play. I am so tired of pretending I love something I don't love." He rubbed the back of his neck. "I am done. I am quitting."

Something cracked open in my chest. Hot and sharp and ugly.

"You can't quit," I said. My voice came out strange.

"It is my life."

"They chose you!" I slapped the letter down on the counter. "Do you have any idea what I would give for that? What I have given? I have trained every single day. Every day, Noah. I am better than half the boys at Riverside and everyone knows it and nobody cares because I am a girl and they just keep telling me to try cheerleading or figure skating and now you stand here and tell me you are throwing it away like it is nothing?"

Noah looked at me with tired eyes. "I know it is not fair."

"Not fair?" I laughed but nothing was funny. "It is not fair that I cannot even try. They will not recruit girls. They will never recruit girls. And you just got handed the only door that exists and you want to close it."

He was quiet for a long moment. Then he said the words that changed my entire life.

"You can't even try. They don't recruit girls."

I stared at him.

And something cold and certain settled inside me like ice forming on a lake.

"Get out of my room," I said quietly.

+++++

I cut my hair that same night. I sat in the bathroom with scissors and I cut it short and practical and I watched pieces of it fall into the sink and I did not cry. I was too busy thinking.

Noah's training gear was in his bag. His registration documents were in the folder on Dad's desk. His player ID. His acceptance confirmation.

He looked like me. We were twins. Same jaw. Same eyes. Same height. People had mixed us up our whole lives. I picked up his jersey.

I put it on.

++++++

Falcons Academy was colder than I expected. Everything was sharp edges and high ceilings and boys who walked like they already knew they were going somewhere. I kept my head down and my jaw set and I answered to Noah like I had been doing it forever.

Because I had been doing it forever. Every local match. Every scrimmage. Every time I needed ice time and the only way to get it was to be someone I was not.

The welcome assembly was loud and bright. Coach Merritt stood at the front with a clipboard and read out dorm assignments in a voice that expected no arguments.

"Carter." He looked up. "You will be sharing a room with Bennett."

From across the room, someone moved. He was tall. Broad shoulders. Eyes like cold water. He turned and found my face immediately like he already knew exactly where to look.

Kai Bennett.

I knew that name. Noah knew that name. Everyone in junior hockey knew that name. Kai Bennett who was fast and ruthless and had beaten Noah in three separate tournaments. Kai Bennett who had made it personal every single time.

He smiled slowly. It was not a nice smile.

"Finally," he said. His voice was low and smooth and sharp at the edges. "My favorite rival."

My stomach dropped straight through the floor.

He thought I was Noah. He wanted to destroy Noah. And I had just agreed to sleep in the room next to him..

  • Ice Between Rivals    Chapter 181

I stood in my room, fumbling with the buttons of my pajamas. No matter how many times I tried, my injured arm made even the simplest things frustrating.Just as I gave up with a sigh, there was a knock on my door.“Come in,” I called. The door opened, and Liam stepped inside.“I made dinner,” he said. “Come and eat.”Then his eyes fell on me.He sighed.“Why don’t you ever call me whenever you need help?”“I was just about to finish,” I muttered. He raised an eyebrow.“About to finish?”He walked toward me.“That’s a lie.”I looked away.“You weren’t even close.”He stopped in front of me before gently taking the loose buttons between his fingers.“You can’t even button your pajamas by yourself right now.”His voice wasn’t mocking. It was patient.Careful.Without another word, he slowly fastened each button for me.We were standing so close that I could feel his warm breath.Somehow…That had become normal.Or maybe it hadn’t.Because every single time Liam stood this close to me, my

I waited until Liam finished practicing before getting up from the bench. The moment he reached me, he smiled faintly.“Let’s go.”He bent down and picked up my bag before I could even touch it.I didn’t bother arguing anymore. There was no point.I had never won an argument against Liam.We slowly made our way toward the reception building. The evening breeze was cool, and after hours of sitting, my leg felt stiff, forcing me to walk even slower.Just as we reached the entrance, someone suddenly wrapped their arms around me.“Oh my God!”I almost lost my balance.“Where have you been?” Camilla exclaimed, squeezing me into a tight hug. “I missed you so much! I wanted to come and see you, but school has been so busy.”I laughed softly despite the pain.“I missed you too.”While she was still hugging me, I looked over her shoulder toward Liam. Our eyes met.He leaned closer and whispered quietly, “I’ll head back. Call me when you’re done.”I nodded.“Okay.”But…His eyes weren’t as brig

“Liam, please.” I grabbed his hand before he could take another step. “Please, let’s not enter class like this.”He sighed impatiently. “Then what do you want?”“Give me my bag.”“Noah, you’re sick.” He frowned. “I’m helping you. Don’t you understand?”“I do understand you’re helping me,” I said quietly. “But you’re also making it harder for me. Everyone is going to stare at us.”“Let them stare.”Before I could argue again, he walked into the classroom, leaving me standing outside.I sighed and slowly followed him inside. My right arm was wrapped in a cast, and my leg was still in a plaster brace. Thankfully, the doctor had said my leg wasn’t badly injured—it just needed support for a while.I thought Liam had already gone to his seat, but when I stepped through the doorway, I found him waiting for me. Without saying a word, he gently rested his hand on my shoulder and walked beside me all the way to my desk.Whispers immediately spread across the classroom.I couldn’t blame my class

By the time Blake and the other students returned, the atmosphere between Liam and me had completely changed.I couldn’t even bring myself to meet his gaze anymore. Every time I looked at him, guilt twisted painfully inside my chest. All this time, it had been such a simple misunderstanding between us.“Do you want some water? Juice?” Liam asked as we returned to the tent.I offered him an awkward smile.“Yeah,” I replied quickly.Honestly, anything that got him away from my side for a few minutes sounded good.He nodded and stood up before disappearing outside.A moment later, Blake stumbled into the tent looking completely exhausted. He dropped down beside me, panting heavily.“That was horrible,” he groaned. “Thank God you didn’t come. Honestly, I wish we could just go home tomorrow. I’m tired.”Then he turned toward me.“And you? How are you?”“I’m okay.”His eyes narrowed.“Wait.”He leaned closer.“Your eyes are red.”My heart skipped.“And your hand—”He grabbed my injured wris

Noah’s POVI woke up groggy and drained, my head still throbbing from the music I’d blasted through my headphones the entire night. Those sounds raw, unrestrained moans echoing through the walls had burrowed under my skin in ways I didn’t want to examine. I sighed heavily as I opened my door, the hallway quiet for once. Liam hadn’t mentioned anything about groceries, and though I planned to buy my own soon, hunger gnawed at me now. My first class wasn’t until after lunch, so I padded toward the kitchen, hoping to whip up something quick before the “lover birds” emerged.I cracked a couple of eggs into a pan, the sizzle filling the small space. Just eat and go, I told myself.Suddenly, a voice behind me made me tense. “Morning.”I turned. It was the girl from last night . She was adjusting Liam’s oversized shirt over her shorts, looking far too comfortable.“Liam’s bad for real,” she said with a light laugh. “He didn’t tell me we had a guest.”I forced a smile. “I’m his new roommate.”

  • Ice Between Rivals    Chapter 175

Blake sat down beside my chair like he wasn’t sure he had the right to be there.“Hi, Noah,” he said softly.I turned my head toward him. “Hi, Blake.”For a second, neither of us spoke. The air between us felt different now—less sharp than yesterday, but still careful, like we were walking around something fragile.“How did you know where I stay?” I asked. He exhaled slowly, eyes dropping to his hands.“Camilla,” he said. “She told me.”Of course she did.He leaned back slightly, as if the weight of what he was about to say made his shoulders tired.“I didn’t sleep well,” he admitted. “I’ve been thinking about how I acted yesterday… I was really bad to you. I’m sorry, Noah. I was angry because—” he stopped, shook his head. “It doesn’t matter. I shouldn’t have spoken to you like that.”I looked at him for a moment, then sighed lightly.“It’s okay.”And I meant it.Because I couldn’t fully blame him. Not when I had stirred things in him too—twisted things without meaning to, especially

Ava’s pov He ran to me before I’d fully stopped moving, arms already open, and pulled me into a hug with the easy warmth of someone for whom this is simply how greetings work.“Noah.” He pulled back and looked at my face. “How are you?”“Fine,” I said. The smile came out slightly behind schedule.

Ava’s pov I sat in class and waited for him to appear. He didn’t.I looked at the empty seat across the room and thought about the night — the cafeteria, the dark, his hands holding mine while I talked about my mother. I had talked about her. Actually talked, with words and details and the parts I

  • Ice Between Rivals    Chapter 86

The morning light was unforgiving. It didn't filter in softly; it cut through the high cafeteria windows in sharp, dusty shafts that made the linoleum floor look like a crime scene of our own making.I woke up first. My neck was stiff from the angle of the chair, and my arms were numb from being fo

Kai’s POVI read the note. Are you mad at me?I looked at it for a moment. Then at him — at the careful, sideways tension he was carrying, the way he’d been glancing over every two minutes since I sat down with the focused anxiety of someone waiting for a verdict.Mad at him. Was I?I turned the qu
