Chapter 5

Penulis: Whoa's That?
“So there’s really no way to punish him?” Joanna gritted her teeth in frustration.

“There is. Jo, do you remember that senior from law school during our university days? The one who always drove his opponents absolutely crazy during debate competitions?”

Joanna’s eyes instantly lit up. “Luke O’Connor? He’s currently the youngest senior partner in the city, specializing in complex commercial and civil dispute cases. But his fees are very high, and he doesn’t just take on any case.”

“It’s fine. I have the money.”

The next morning, Luke O’Connor showed up right on time at Joanna’s apartment. He was wearing a dark gray suit and rimless glasses, his expression cold and stern.

“It’s been a while, Lea. Joanna has given me a rough overview of the situation over the phone, and I’ve reviewed the copy of the accident report from the traffic police.”

He pulled a document out of his briefcase and laid it flat on the coffee table.

“From the current official assessment, this is being treated as a standard traffic accident. The vehicle behind you rear-ended your car, causing a fuel leak and subsequent fire. As the driver, Shawn chose to rescue Willow Benson under emergency circumstances, given that she wasn’t wearing a seatbelt and had sustained a head injury. Morally, he will be condemned. However, under current laws, it will be very difficult to hold him criminally liable.”

“Luke, if this were just about dividing up a property, I wouldn’t have gone through the trouble of calling you in. I need you to help me investigate a specific vehicle.”

Luke raised an eyebrow as I spoke.

“The stretch of highway where the accident occurred was experiencing a heavy downpour at the time. Our car was stopped between the emergency lane and the far-right lane. When the fuel leaked and caught fire, a heavy-duty truck was in the opposite lane. Because the road was slick from the rain and the driver was startled by the explosion on our side, the truck crashed into the central dividing barrier.

“The front of that truck was facing our car directly. The truck driver was trapped in his cab at the time, so he definitely witnessed the entire process. Furthermore, those kinds of long-haul trucks are always equipped with panoramic dashcams.”

Luke’s gaze shifted. He adjusted his glasses, pulled out a fountain pen, and began taking notes.

“If that footage can prove that Shawn had sufficient time to return and rescue you after carrying Willow out, but chose not to, and instead left the scene as the fire spread…”

“Then it constitutes intentional harm by omission or the offense of desertion,” I finished his sentence for him.

“It will be difficult to secure a conviction, but there are sufficient grounds to open an official investigation. More importantly, given Shawn’s special status, if this footage is handed over to internal affairs or used as evidence in a civil lawsuit, it will be sufficient to prove that he violated his duties in the face of danger and committed a major fault.

“When it comes to the property division for dissolving a common-law relationship, you can demand that he forfeit his entire shared stake in the house and claim massive emotional damages.” Luke looked at me, adjusting his glasses. “Did the traffic police retrieve the footage from that truck?”

“No, because that was treated as an independent accident. It was handled separately from our rear-end collision. The truck driver was severely injured and rushed to a different hospital. The footage should still be inside the truck or with the traffic police division handling that specific crash.”

Luke stood up and packed the documents back into his briefcase. “Leave it to me. Within forty-eight hours, I will have that videotape or a copy of the files in front of you.”

He walked to the door before turning back to look at me and adding, “Lea, a fracture is a terrible pain to endure, but I’ll make sure he pays for what he did.”

Joanna let out a long, deep sigh of relief.

“I told you Luke was reliable! Once we get that footage, I’d like to see how that bastard tries to argue his way out of this!”

I kept my phone on speakerphone, placing it right on the coffee table so I could listen while I changed the dressing on my injured right leg.Once she was done crying her eyes out, I finally spoke up. “Mrs. Adams, if I hadn’t managed to crawl out of that car on my own that day, I wouldn’t even be alive right now. You guys still have your lives, don’t you? You can earn the money back eventually. Go work retail or do some housekeeping. There must be something you know how to do.”With that, I ended the call and immediately blocked her number. As for Willow, getting reassigned didn’t save her from her fate either. Joanne took a screenshot of the post Willow had shared on her social media feed and posted it online anonymously. Joanna didn’t exaggerate anything or add fuel to the fire; she simply laid out the most objective timeline comparison. Yet, the power of netizens was terrifying. It didn’t take long before Willow’s entire identity was exposed.A freshly graduated trainee who no

Shawn looked as if all the strength had been drained from his body, and he collapsed onto the sofa. This man, who was so used to controlling everything and who was always preaching about morality and righteousness, finally broke down at that moment.“Lea…” Shawn looked up, his face ashen, looking like a complete wreck.“We’ve been together for seven years. Do you really have to be so heartless? I know I was wrong! I’ll give you the apartment, and I’ll give you all the savings too! Just don’t shut down the system, okay? Next month is the selection for the deputy chief position. I’ve worked hard for years to earn this chance. If you shut down the system, my entire career will be ruined for the rest of my life!”He even made a move to slide off the sofa, burying his head in his hands. However, Joanna was quick. With a swift movement, she kicked the coffee table out of the way and stood in front of me.“Save your disgusting little tricks! When you left Lea to die in that leaking car,

The righteous confidence on Shawn’s face crumbled as the footage played on.When the video finally ended, the screen plunged back into darkness.Shawn stared blankly at the black screen. His Adam’s apple bobbed up and down, and every last drop of color drained from his face. He reached out toward the laptop, but his fingers were trembling too hard to press any key.“This… this isn’t the complete footage,” he said, his voice hoarse. “It’s an angle issue. The dashcam’s angle couldn’t possibly capture what I was doing at that moment–”“Couldn’t capture what?” I sat calmly on the sofa, quietly watching him struggle. “Shawn, even the traffic police have verified the integrity of the video. You had a full two minutes before the fire even started.”Shawn snapped his head up, his eyes bloodshot. He lunged forward, trying to grab my wrist, but Joanna stepped in and shoved him back.“Lea, listen to me!” Shawn said in a panic. “My mind was just consumed with saving the injured at the ti

This post, which was blocked only from my friends, had spread through the department’s internal colleague chats and acquaintance circles. Every single word trampled on my dignity as Shawn’s legitimate fiancée, all to showcase how special and understanding she was. Now, everyone believed that Shawn was a selfless hero who had painfully left his fiancée behind for the greater good, and Willow was a sweet, sensible police officer trainee who deeply cared for her hero. As for me, I had become a malicious woman who didn’t care about the bigger picture; I couldn’t comprehend a police officer’s duty and was even kicking up a fuss in the hospital to hold a hero back. When Shawn saw the screenshot on the floor, the mask he had been wearing finally cracked, but he still kept up that high-and-mighty rhetoric of his.“Willow just survived a near-death experience and made a post on social media to express her feelings. What is there to make such a big fuss about? Lea, do you really have to

Across the screen, I could almost smell the bitter stench of burning flesh from that day. When a person was abandoned in the face of death, it was impossible not to feel resentment.Yet, I suddenly realized that rather than hating him, I felt sorry for myself, for the version of me who, even while hurting so badly that I almost fainted in that sea of fire, still fought desperately to survive. There was no greater sorrow than the death of one’s heart.“Luke,” I said calmly, “make two copies. Have one as material for a lawsuit to submit to the police and the court, and send the other one to Shawn and his lawyer. Also, draft two documents for me. One will be a property division agreement to dissolve our cohabitation relationship, and the other will be a notice of revocation regarding my design patent licensing agreement.”Luke adjusted his glasses and nodded. “Alright. I’ll get right on it.”The next morning, I finally picked up Shawn’s phone call.“Lea, what on earth do you want?

The waiting time felt exceptionally long.Over the past two days, I had received dozens of messages from Shawn. On the first day, Shawn’s message was condescending. [Lea Summer, are you done throwing a tantrum out there? Willow has moved back to her shared apartment today, so get yourself home right now. Your leg isn’t even healed yet. What are you out there doing on your own? I’ll pick you up after work tomorrow.]On the second day, as the deadline approached for the state inspection of the city police department’s ‘Eagle Eye’ intelligent policing system, his tone transformed into a frantic, furious interrogation. [Lea! What is the meaning of this? Why did you shut down the backend permissions for the system your company provided? Do you know the state inspection team is over at the precinct today to watch the demo? You need to lift the restriction on the system right now. This system dictates whether I can be promoted to deputy chief at the end of the year. Stop being so ignor
