Chapter 4

작가: Whoa's That?
I avoided his hand. “Three days. I’m giving you three days. Three days from now, I will return with a lawyer to discuss splitting the ownership of this house. Furthermore, the exclusive licensing for Eagle-Eye—the AI tracking system that my tech company provided to the city police department will be fully revoked.”

Shawn’s expression instantly sank.

“Lea, do you even know what you’re saying? The state review board is evaluating our smart policing initiative next month. This project is my ticket to the deputy chief promotion. If you terminate the licensing, the entire system will shut down. Are you trying to destroy my future?”

“That is my patent. It was a stepping stone I gave you for free, and I’m taking it back now.”

I pushed open the front door and walked out without looking back.

The stairwell was deathly quiet. I leaned against the freezing wall, gasping heavily for breath. The pain in my right leg was so intense that it had almost gone numb.

Inside that apartment were the curtains I had personally picked out, the renovation blueprints I had drawn up line by line, and a seven-year promise made by a boy whose eyes used to be filled with no one else but me.

Now, all that remained of him was a man who weighed his pros and cons.

What that raging fire burned away was not just the bone in my leg but the very last hope I had in this relationship. However, my mind was clearer than it had ever been before.

I didn’t book myself into a hotel. Dragging a leg bound in a plaster cast made staying at a hotel far too inconvenient. Instead, I sat on a bench outside the entrance of the residential compound and called Joanna Ford.

Joanna was my college roommate, and she was currently the only person I could trust without reservation.

The call went through after just two rings.

“Lea? You finally turned your phone back on! I’ve been looking for you like crazy for the past half month! I knocked on your apartment door, and no one answered. Where on earth did you disappear to?”

“Jo, I was in a car accident. I was just discharged from the hospital.”

Joanna’s voice went up an octave. “Where are you? Send me your location. Stand still and don’t move; I’m coming over right now!”

Half an hour later, Joanna’s SUV pulled up at the neighbourhood entrance. She rushed down, and the moment she saw me leaning on crutches with a suitcase sitting by my feet, her eyes instantly welled up with tears.

“Where is Shawn? Your leg is broken, and he let you leave the house with your luggage?”

“He’s currently busy upstairs taking care of his traumatized female intern.”

I related the entire sequence of events to her, exactly as it happened.

“So, he locked you inside a leaking car to go save a bitch who only suffered a few scratches? And after you got discharged, not only did he not pick you up, but he even brought her back to your home?”

“Yeah.”

“Fuck him!” Joanna slammed her hand hard against the steering wheel as she said, “Lea, you sit right there. I’m going up with a knife to hack that bastard couple to pieces!”

I quickly grabbed her arm. “Jo, don’t go. Going to jail for people like them isn’t worth it. Don’t worry. I won’t let them have an easy time.”

Joanna had known me for seven years, and she knew I was usually easygoing and somewhat soft-tempered. Yet, this time, she saw in my eyes that I had truly given up on hope.

She sat back down in the driver’s seat. “Alright. We’re going to my place. I’m renting a two-bedroom apartment, and one room is empty. You can stay there.”

Joanna’s apartment was in an older residential district downtown, and it was kept very clean.

After helping me settle in, she went back downstairs to get me some anti-inflammatory medication and nursing supplies.

That evening, I sat on the sofa with my leg propped up on a soft cushion, applying an ice pack.

Walking over holding a glass of water, Joanna asked, “What do you plan to do? The house issue is easy to handle. That can be settled by filing a lawsuit. But the fact that he left you in the car on the day of the accident—do you plan to just let it go?”

“Of course not. The traffic police have ruled it as an accidental rear-end collision, with the car behind holding full liability. Even though Shawn, the driver, fled the scene after the accident, he did save someone. Legally speaking, it will be very difficult to define whether he deliberately left someone to die.”

I kept my phone on speakerphone, placing it right on the coffee table so I could listen while I changed the dressing on my injured right leg.Once she was done crying her eyes out, I finally spoke up. “Mrs. Adams, if I hadn’t managed to crawl out of that car on my own that day, I wouldn’t even be alive right now. You guys still have your lives, don’t you? You can earn the money back eventually. Go work retail or do some housekeeping. There must be something you know how to do.”With that, I ended the call and immediately blocked her number. As for Willow, getting reassigned didn’t save her from her fate either. Joanne took a screenshot of the post Willow had shared on her social media feed and posted it online anonymously. Joanna didn’t exaggerate anything or add fuel to the fire; she simply laid out the most objective timeline comparison. Yet, the power of netizens was terrifying. It didn’t take long before Willow’s entire identity was exposed.A freshly graduated trainee who no

Shawn looked as if all the strength had been drained from his body, and he collapsed onto the sofa. This man, who was so used to controlling everything and who was always preaching about morality and righteousness, finally broke down at that moment.“Lea…” Shawn looked up, his face ashen, looking like a complete wreck.“We’ve been together for seven years. Do you really have to be so heartless? I know I was wrong! I’ll give you the apartment, and I’ll give you all the savings too! Just don’t shut down the system, okay? Next month is the selection for the deputy chief position. I’ve worked hard for years to earn this chance. If you shut down the system, my entire career will be ruined for the rest of my life!”He even made a move to slide off the sofa, burying his head in his hands. However, Joanna was quick. With a swift movement, she kicked the coffee table out of the way and stood in front of me.“Save your disgusting little tricks! When you left Lea to die in that leaking car,

The righteous confidence on Shawn’s face crumbled as the footage played on.When the video finally ended, the screen plunged back into darkness.Shawn stared blankly at the black screen. His Adam’s apple bobbed up and down, and every last drop of color drained from his face. He reached out toward the laptop, but his fingers were trembling too hard to press any key.“This… this isn’t the complete footage,” he said, his voice hoarse. “It’s an angle issue. The dashcam’s angle couldn’t possibly capture what I was doing at that moment–”“Couldn’t capture what?” I sat calmly on the sofa, quietly watching him struggle. “Shawn, even the traffic police have verified the integrity of the video. You had a full two minutes before the fire even started.”Shawn snapped his head up, his eyes bloodshot. He lunged forward, trying to grab my wrist, but Joanna stepped in and shoved him back.“Lea, listen to me!” Shawn said in a panic. “My mind was just consumed with saving the injured at the ti

This post, which was blocked only from my friends, had spread through the department’s internal colleague chats and acquaintance circles. Every single word trampled on my dignity as Shawn’s legitimate fiancée, all to showcase how special and understanding she was. Now, everyone believed that Shawn was a selfless hero who had painfully left his fiancée behind for the greater good, and Willow was a sweet, sensible police officer trainee who deeply cared for her hero. As for me, I had become a malicious woman who didn’t care about the bigger picture; I couldn’t comprehend a police officer’s duty and was even kicking up a fuss in the hospital to hold a hero back. When Shawn saw the screenshot on the floor, the mask he had been wearing finally cracked, but he still kept up that high-and-mighty rhetoric of his.“Willow just survived a near-death experience and made a post on social media to express her feelings. What is there to make such a big fuss about? Lea, do you really have to

Across the screen, I could almost smell the bitter stench of burning flesh from that day. When a person was abandoned in the face of death, it was impossible not to feel resentment.Yet, I suddenly realized that rather than hating him, I felt sorry for myself, for the version of me who, even while hurting so badly that I almost fainted in that sea of fire, still fought desperately to survive. There was no greater sorrow than the death of one’s heart.“Luke,” I said calmly, “make two copies. Have one as material for a lawsuit to submit to the police and the court, and send the other one to Shawn and his lawyer. Also, draft two documents for me. One will be a property division agreement to dissolve our cohabitation relationship, and the other will be a notice of revocation regarding my design patent licensing agreement.”Luke adjusted his glasses and nodded. “Alright. I’ll get right on it.”The next morning, I finally picked up Shawn’s phone call.“Lea, what on earth do you want?

The waiting time felt exceptionally long.Over the past two days, I had received dozens of messages from Shawn. On the first day, Shawn’s message was condescending. [Lea Summer, are you done throwing a tantrum out there? Willow has moved back to her shared apartment today, so get yourself home right now. Your leg isn’t even healed yet. What are you out there doing on your own? I’ll pick you up after work tomorrow.]On the second day, as the deadline approached for the state inspection of the city police department’s ‘Eagle Eye’ intelligent policing system, his tone transformed into a frantic, furious interrogation. [Lea! What is the meaning of this? Why did you shut down the backend permissions for the system your company provided? Do you know the state inspection team is over at the precinct today to watch the demo? You need to lift the restriction on the system right now. This system dictates whether I can be promoted to deputy chief at the end of the year. Stop being so ignor
