Bella’s POV

The doctor’s voice cut through the sterile hum of the machines. “Your body has been used as a test subject for an experimental drug. Continued exposure could kill you.”

I lay on the hospital bed, limbs heavy as lead, and stared at him. The words refused to settle. My lips carried that strange blue tint the nurses had noticed earlier, and my chest ached with every shallow breath. Shock wrapped around me like a frozen blanket. This couldn’t be happening. Not after months of weakness no one could explain. Not after all the tests that led nowhere.

My mind reached for the only anchor it had left. Josh. He would never do this to me. He had walked into that brothel like a man on a mission, paid them, and carried me out into the daylight. Six months of marriage had shown me a steady, quiet kind of safety I had never known. He made coffee for me in the mornings. He listened when I spoke about my fears of being useless. He held me at night as if I mattered. A good man. My savior. The thought steadied my breathing. There had to be a mistake. Someone else’s file. A mix-up in the lab. Anything but Josh.

I almost smiled at the relief that washed over me. Yes. He would walk through that door any moment now, worried and gentle, and we would figure this out together. He always fixed things. That was who he was.

The door opened.

Josh stepped inside wearing the crisp shirt I had ironed two days ago. His face held no worry. Only a stern line of his jaw and anger burning cold in his eyes. My fragile hope wavered, but I pushed it back. He must be upset about the hospital. Stressed from work.

“Josh,” I said softly, trying to sit up. Pain flared through my body. “The doctor said something crazy. Tell him it’s not true. Please.”

He didn’t look at me. He signed the discharge papers with quick strokes, exchanged a few low words with the doctor, then jerked his head toward the wheelchair. Silence followed us down the hallway, into the elevator, and out to the car. I kept my eyes on his profile, searching for the man I knew.

In the car, the quiet pressed against my skin. Every passing streetlight dragged shadows across his face. I couldn’t hold it any longer.

“Why?” My voice came out small. “Why would you do this to me after everything? After the love, the promises. You saved me, Josh. You chose me.”

He kept driving, knuckles tight on the wheel, offering nothing. The city lights blurred past. I repeated the question, softer, then again, my throat tightening with each mile. Still nothing. The man who once kissed my forehead when I cried now acted as if I were invisible.

When we reached the house, the familiar walls felt colder than the hospital room. I stepped out of the car on shaky legs, but the moment the front door closed behind us, the dam broke.

“Tell me the truth right now!” I crashed out, voice rising despite the weakness in my limbs. “All of it. Or I swear I will divorce you. I can’t live like this, not knowing.”

He paused in the hallway. For several heartbeats he stood with his back to me. Then he turned slowly, and the expression on his face sent ice down my spine. No softness. No guilt.

“It’s true.”

The admission landed hard. I searched his eyes, desperate for any sign that this was a nightmare. There was none. His tone stayed harsh, flat, as if he were discussing lab results instead of my life.

“I spent too much money getting you out of that brothel. This is how you repay me.”

The room tilted. I grabbed the back of the sofa to stay upright. Memories flooded in without mercy. My father’s gambling debts that grew faster than I could hide from them. The night he sold me to settle what he owed, his hand shoving me toward strangers while he counted cash. The shame that clung to my skin for months until Josh appeared like some impossible miracle. He had promised a new life. Safety. Love. I had believed every word because I needed to believe.

Tears spilled hot down my cheeks. “I want a divorce. I’ll sign whatever you want. Just let me go.”

Josh stepped closer, his presence suddenly suffocating in the home we had shared. “I will never sign those papers. You stay here and finish the cycle. That’s the deal.”

“Repay you?” The words tasted bitter. “You married me. You said I was your fresh start. Was any of it real?”

His shrug carried no remorse. “It was practical. Stay and repay what I spent bringing you back. That’s why I married you.”

I wiped at my face, anger and heartbreak twisting together until I could barely breathe. “Why not someone else? Why me?”

Josh scoffed, a cold, short sound that shattered whatever pieces of me remained intact. “Because your RH null blood is the rarest type in the world. You’re compatible with the compound in ways no one else we tested has been. You’ll be my lab rat for as long as I need. And if you leave before the full dosage protocol is complete, the toxicity already in your system will kill you.”

He delivered the sentence like a simple fact, eyes steady on mine, waiting for it to sink in.

I stood there in the house that had once felt like salvation, heart hammering against my ribs, the man I had loved staring back at me with nothing but calculation. The silence stretched, heavy and final, while the full weight of his words pressed down on my chest.

My life was no longer my own.

Bella’s POVThe drive back from my hometown was quiet, but for the first time, the silence did not feel heavy. I held my grandmother's handwritten note in my coat pocket, feeling the crisp paper beneath my fingertips. Next to me, Maximo drove with one hand on the wheel. Every so often, he reached over to squeeze my knee, making sure I was still grounded. When we arrived at his estate, a team of medical professionals were already waiting in the grand living room. Maximo had hired the top specialists in the state to fix what Josh had ruined. They set up medical gear in a bright guest bedroom on the second floor, turning it into a private recovery space just for me.The first week was hard. The doctors started a special treatment to flush the synthetic toxins out of my RH-null blood. My body fought back against the sudden shift. I spent the first few days sweating through feverish chills and fighting off deep nausea. Whenever the pain got too bad, Maximo was right there. He did not dele

Bella’s POVThe drive back to my hometown was quiet. Maximo kept one hand on the steering wheel and the other resting over mine. The familiar streets felt smaller than I remembered. They were gray and full of old memories I had tried hard to forget. Every corner reminded me of hunger, fear, and the day my father traded my life for cash. When we pulled up to the small funeral home, my heart pounded against my ribs. I took a deep breath and stepped out into the chilly air. Maximo moved to my side right away. His tall frame felt like a wall between me and the rest of the world.Inside, the scent of old flowers filled the room. My father stood near the plain wooden casket. He looked older, his face weathered by alcohol and bad decisions. He wore a rumpled jacket that reeked of cheap liquor and tobacco. The moment his eyes landed on me, he did not offer a hug. He did not ask how I was doing. His eyes just lit up with greed."Bella," he said, walking over with fast steps. "You finally made

Bella’s POVI gathered my scattered clothes from the floor with trembling hands. My dress from last night lay crumpled near the door and I snatched it up quickly. I needed to leave. The weight of everything, my father's call, Grandma's death and Josh's cruel lie pressed down on me until I could hardly breathe. I moved toward the bedroom door without looking back at the man still sitting on the bed. My bare feet padded across the cool floor as I clutched the sheet tighter around my body."Bella, wait." Maximo's voice stopped me before I reached the handle. He stood and crossed the room in a few strides placing his hand gently on the door. "Do not run. Not like this."I spun around facing him with tears already threatening to fall again. The words burst out of me in a messy rush. "My grandmother is dead Maximo. The only person who ever truly cared about me before everything went wrong. She is gone and my father who sold me when I was fifteen suddenly calls me like it is nothing. He sold

  • It’s Your Loss, Ex, Your Uncle Is Mine   Chapter 4

Bella’s POV I woke up slowly with warmth surrounding me. My body felt heavy and satisfied in a way I had not experienced in months. Naked skin pressed against mine. A strong arm draped across my waist holding me close. For one hazy moment I smiled and almost whispered his name. "Josh." The word died on my tongue as reality crashed over me. This was not Josh. The broad chest and the scent of woody cologne belonged to Maximo Volkov. Josh's uncle. I froze in place, my heart suddenly hammering against my ribs. I was in his bed. In his house. Memories from the night before, flooded back in vivid detail. The bar. The tequila. Pouring out my pain to him. The desperate kiss in the car. His hands on my body. The way I had begged him to fuck me. Heat rushed to my face but it was not from pleasure. Panic gripped me tight. What had I done? I had slept with my husband's uncle. I had told him everything about Josh's betrayal of the drugs the way I had been used like a lab rat. Now Maximo knew

Maximo’s POV The backseat of the car felt too small for the heat building between us. My driver kept his eyes fixed on the road ahead with professional silence as I kissed Bella deeply. Her lips tasted of tequila and desperation. I held her face in my hands while my tongue explored her mouth. Every soft moan she made sent fire straight to my groin. I had noticed her before at family events. Her quiet beauty and the sadness in her eyes had stirred something in me even then. Now she sat in my lap with her legs straddling me and I was terrified. She was my nephew's wife. This was dangerous territory. Yet the way she clung to me made it impossible to stop.I had not been with a woman in years. After my divorce, I threw myself into work and avoided complications. My body had grown hungry for touch. Tonight, that hunger roared to life. Bella's hips rocked against me and I groaned into her mouth. My cock strained hard against my pants. I wanted her more than I had wanted anyone in a long ti

Bella’s POVMy feet moved along the sidewalk without direction. Each step felt hollow as if my body had already begun to detach from whatever life remained inside it. Streetlights cast long shadows that stretched ahead of me like accusing fingers. I kept walking. The night air brushed cold against my skin yet I barely registered it. Everything inside me had gone numb after Josh's final words. So this was his plan all along. The rescue, the gentle touch, the promises of a better life. All of it calculated so he could use my rare blood for his experiments. I had loved him. I had trusted him completely. Now that trust lay shattered at my feet and I did not know how to pick up the pieces.Memories played in my mind without mercy. The first night he brought me home after the brothel. How he had drawn a bath and left clean clothes folded neatly on the bed. The quiet evenings when he listened to my stories about my father and never judged me for where I came from. The way his hand felt warm
