Chapter 05.7

That evening, we went dancing at a friendly little club that played modern hits. The bar stretched along the wall near the entrance, the DJ booth was set up on a small platform directly opposite the door, and the velvet-upholstered booths with high backs lined the wall across from the bar.

By the time we arrived, the dance floor was already pretty full, but we managed to squeeze into an empty booth.

I danced with almost everyone—except Jenny. She didn’t want to dance with me, but Brian got her on the floor. After a while, we guys just sat around, chatting. I kept watching my girl as she danced in a group with the other girls.

Whenever Jenny went to the bar to order a drink, the bartender kept chatting with her. She even laughed once. I wanted to get up and go to her, but Brian—still talking to Daryl across from him—casually pressed a hand to my shoulder, keeping me in my seat.

Luckily we didn’t stay too long—tomorrow was going to be a big day.

At breakfast, the girls were already curious.

“So, boys,” Susy asked, ”what’s the plan?”

“We head out, find a nice clearing, and spend the day there,” I said simply.

“Today is Jay’s birthday gift,” Brian laughed.

“That’s true,” Jenny agreed.

After eating, everyone got ready in their rooms and met in the lobby. Susy and Jenny were the last to arrive.

“Jenny,” I teased when I saw her, ”are you sure you want to come dressed like that?”

She wore long pants, socks, hiking boots, and a long-sleeved top.

“Why? What’s wrong with it?” she asked.

“It’s summer—you’re going to be hot,” I laughed. ”But hey, your call.”

“Isn’t that backpack a bit much?” I grinned, eyeing the fully packed bag on her back.

“I packed for the night, but not the day, so I had to shift a few things around.”

“Fair enough.”

All the girls came prepared with bags. We guys brought nothing more than a single tote.

“Don’t catch a cold,” Paul teased Diane and Jenny, both of whom were dressed for a hike.

The rest of the girls were in shorts and T-shirts, ready for a sunny day.

The forest was just outside the city, with a beautiful large lake where swimming was allowed, though there wasn’t a designated beach area. The shoreline was shallow, making it easy to walk into the water from almost anywhere. The guys and I found a clearing with direct access to the lake—spacious enough for five tents arranged in a semicircle, with no trees in the way.

We dropped our gear and started setting up the tents while the girls went back to the store for food.

“Jay,” Daryl called out, ”we’re inflating the boats too, right?”

“Of course,” I nodded. This year, we’d brought two larger inflatable boats—Daryl had gotten them for us.

By the time the girls returned, the tents were up and the boats were ready.

“Everyone brought swimsuits, right?” Brian asked. The girls nodded, and most of them disappeared into the tents. Jenny, however, just sat down on a log and started taking off her shoes.

“Jenny,” I called over, ”what are you doing?”

I didn’t like that she was changing out here, but I couldn’t say more than that.

“Getting changed,” she said calmly, pulling off her socks.

“Jenny,” I said, a little tense, ”the guys are here.”

“I can see that,” she smiled, unbuttoning her jeans.

In my mind’s eye, I saw Jenny’s private dance from last year, and I started to lose control at the thought that now everyone could see it. I gently took her hand, trying to stay calm.

“What are you doing?” I asked firmly.

“Still getting changed,” she smiled, and kept going. I was starting to lose my cool.

“Jay,” Paul said, ”if she wants to change, let her.” His tone was serious.

“I agree,” Aaron grinned.

Jenny pulled off her jeans, revealing a pair of shorts underneath.

“Jay,” she smiled at me, ”I don’t think this is your call—but whatever.” She laughed and, with one smooth motion, pulled off her shirt to reveal her swimsuit. The guys burst out laughing.

“What did you think was happening?” she asked, now fully dressed for swimming.

“I don’t think he was thinking at all,” Brian laughed. ”It was obvious to me—and to Paul.”

“We were just hoping we were wrong,” Daryl and Aaron teased.

“Sorry,” I said. ”I overreacted. I wasn’t thinking.”

“We noticed,” Brian smirked, snapping me out of my daze.

After the game, we waited until most of the crowd had cleared out.“Pizzeria?” Frankie asked while we waited.“It’s your birthday,” Brian smiled at him.“I hope you’re not upset about Daryl’s idea,” Diane said cautiously.“Not at all,” Frankie grinned. “You guys made this birthday unforgettable.”We left the stadium and Brian drove us to a pizzeria near the city park.It was a wooden building with large windows. The kitchen was right by the entrance, where a guy in colorful clothes and oversized glasses greeted us.The pizzeria had a nostalgic style—the waitresses wore quirky, colorful outfits or pants, accessorized with huge necklaces and headbands. Flowers and peace signs were painted all over the whit

“I’ll pick you up early tomorrow morning,” he said before walking me to the door.“Uncle Steve,” I said as we reached the entrance, “if it’s okay, I’d rather not tell anyone that I’m your apprentice.”“I wasn’t planning to either,” he smiled. “Anything else?”“For me, the bonus questions aren’t just optional, right?”“I don’t think I even need to answer that,” he laughed. “I liked your response to the alcohol question too.”We shook hands, and I stepped outside.“Messyhair,” Jenny ran after me once I was already on the street. “Just don’t leave me behind on Sunday.”Right there, in the open street, she wrapped her arms around my neck and kissed me. On Monday morning, we headed to school, but I knew that during the week, I’d only see her in the evenings because of the shop.“Where were you this weekend, Jay?” Phil asked before class.“With my girlfriend.”“You got a girlfriend pretty fast,” he laughed.“Luckily, that’s never been a problem,” I laughed. I didn’t feel like telling them who she was.Until midweek, our evenings together at her place were all we had. Once Paul returned, I usually slept at the dorm. A few more months, and we’d be together every day anyway. On Friday, after school, I drove us home—we took one car, so we had time to talk.“Babe,” I starte

We barely slept that night, and even during the day, we spent all our time together. But for dinner, she dressed beautifully, wearing her old green-and-silver dress. I had reserved a table at an Asian restaurant on the edge of the park near us. Since the weather was nice and the distance was short, we walked.“Do you like Brian and Mayoko’s apartment?” I asked as we strolled.“I do,” she said. “It’s not a cheap area, but Paul and Brian can afford it.”“Would you live here with me?” I asked, watching her reaction.“W-with you?” she asked, surprised. “I just officially became your girlfriend,” she laughed.“Not now,” I said. “In the future.”“That’s still far off,” she smiled.

Slowly, my life at university settled into a rhythm.Daryl and Aaron found out I transferred here, and they were happy about it. I spent several evenings a week at my girlfriend’s place, swam in the mornings, met up with our friends weekly, and once a month, I went home to do house calls with Uncle Steve. Jenny would either translate or study, but she always came home with me. After she and Adam finished negotiations, she only took on interpreting jobs in rare cases.I was balanced and happy, and my girlfriend shone more brightly each day. She was finally starting to believe that I truly loved her. I was sure plenty of people tried to win her over, but I trusted her completely. At university, no one knew I was Uncle Steve’s apprentice, but in every lecture, I had to be able to answer at least one of his personalized questions.“Are we going to the game tomorrow?” Da

On Friday evening, I went to my girlfriend’s place for an early dinner. She had set the table and prepared a meal, looking just as stunning as she had every other day that week.I handed her the flowers I’d brought, kissed her after slipping off my shoes, and she smiled.“Sit down,” she said, gesturing toward the dining table.“Babe.” I grinned as she started serving, but I didn’t sit. “You do realize that dinner doesn’t necessarily mean dinner?” I laughed.“I thought you were hungry,” she said, cheeks heating as I wrapped my arms around her from behind.“Put everything in the fridge,” I murmured, trailing slow kisses up her neck. “We won’t be eating for a while. I’m craving something else more.”Within minutes, the table was cleared. We kissed breathlessly as I led her to the bedroom. She unbuttoned my shirt while I tugged at hers. I pushed her skirt down impatiently, my hands greedy, while she slipped out gracefully, smirking at my rush. When we reached her bed, I laid her down and
