CHAPTER 1:THE OBSIDIAN SECRET
The atmosphere inside this nightclub is making me anxious. The people aren't very welcoming either. I go out the first door I can find to get some fresh air.
Kimora told me this girl's party would be at some high end bar. Instead, we are at a this dump of a club. The skimpy dress I'm in provides nothing but stares at this place.
The fake ID in my purse feels like a waste of time.
Kimora paid so much money for it, but I'll probably never use it again.
I text her that I'm going home because I need a shower desperately.
I walk down the stairs from the back of the club.
The alley only continues left, so I follow it until I find the street. I notice four people beside the dumpsters. I think they are hiding behind them. I don't look directly at them because I just want to get out of this hole.
I try to keep my head in my phone, but then I realize how silent the group is. These fuckers are probably staring at me, so I look at them to set the record straight.
There are three standing up, and one on the ground. The Asian guy's style catches my eye. He has on black, plaid joggers and a tight black shirt.
The other 2 white guys are also in black.
One is blond and one is brunette.
All four of them seem anything but interested in me. The three standing up are pissed. Then I see the one sat down.
He isn't looking at me because he can't see. His eyes are motionless. He has a pool of blood spilling out from behind him.
His corpse is leaned against the brick wall and the side of the dumpster, invisible to the street ahead.
I have seen dead bodies before, but I was allowed to see those. This one was meant to be a secret for their eyes only.
"Sandy, why are you staring? Cat got your tongue?" Says the blond guy with the tattoos.
I stay silent. I don't even have an answer for him.
"Look, we'll cut ya a deal. You can go, but you have to PROMISE not to tell a soul."
Says the brunette guy.
He sounds sarcastic.
"Really. Just like that?"
"Pinky swear." He smirks. The Asian guy nudges him with his elbow.
I start to walk out of the alley. I know I'm not getting out of there conscious, so getting this over with now sounds best.
Just as I predicted, I'm knocked out cold with the butt end of their glock.
I come to in the back of a car, but I don't want to open my eyes just yet. My hands are tied behind my back. I can't move them from under me even if I tried. I can feel myself laid against the car window, and also heat to my left.
The two in the front seat are discussing stuff.
"You know we can't just bring a bitch to the fucking meeting." I believe the blond one says.
"Well we can't kill her!" Says the brown haired guy.
"I really don't see why not."
"What were we gonna do, put two bodies in the trunk? And you can't tell me you feel alright killing an innocent one."
"I don't think she's innocent. Did you see how calm she was after seeing a body?"
"Yeah... Nathaniel, check her for an ID."
Nathaniel is his name. I feel my bag being tugged, so I finally open my eyes.
"Oh look who's joined us." Says Nathaniel.
"Give us your name." Says the blond the one driving.
I stall and try to break free from the rope around my wrists. All of the struggle is pointless though. I just end up hurting myself.
I freeze as soon as the Nathaniel guy next to me flips his knife out and points it at my neck.
"Silver John." I remember from the fake ID.
He slowly lowers his arm.
"Silver? Seriously?" Laughs one of them.
"How much did you pay for that ID sweetheart?"
Laughs another.
"What?" I ask.
Suddenly I feel the chain of my purse break against my neck. It happened quick, but the pain lingers.
The Nathaniel guy ruffles through my bag.
"Silver John, born 9/19/99. Yeah okay 'silver '." Nathaniel says.
"Now if you don't give us your real identity we will just find it later on our own. So make this easy will ya?" Says one up front.
I sigh. I'm not getting out of this easily.
"Nara. Not getting the rest."
I look over at Nathaniel . He is twirling the knife around his fingers, with nails polished in chipping black paint. This guy scares the shit out of me.
Way more than the front two idiots. He has his hair up in a tiny little pony tail. In front of his ear he has a small tattoo of a snake wrapping around a sword. His plaid joggers have black straps around them, and his short boots seem massive compared to his ankles.
"Give us your last name babe." Says the Nathaniel guy.
"Nara Voss ." I sigh.
"Well nice to meet you Nara! Now how old are you because you're clearly not twenty one." Says blond guy.
"Do I not pass for it?" I smirk.
"No you do, but your fake doesn't."
"I'm nineteen."
"See now we definitely can't fucking kill her."
Says the brunette one.
"Well what do you think he's gonna do when we roll up with this girl?" Asks blond guy.
"Well he's not just gonna shoot her point blank in front of the Obsidian."
"He? Obsidian ?"
They all ignore my question. I don't need more information though. These guys somehow are affiliated with the Italians that my uncle is doing a deal with tonight.
My uncle is the leader of the obsidian Mafia. I haven't been a part of that life since I was eight, but memories of it haunt me every day. The gunshots, the blood, the bodies. It all prepared me for the day I would see it all again. Unfortunately, I think today is that day.
"Knock her Nathaniel." I hear.
I start to look at Nathaniel to give him some sort of plea, but everything turns to darkness.
I am shaken awake this time. I check outside of each window. We look like we are in an abandoned alleyway.
Two people walk near our car to greet these three.
I can't get a good look at them because of their height.
"Okay Nara stay here. Don't think you're getting out of here alive either."
I roll my eyes as they get out of the car. Then I hear them talking.
"Leon who the fuck is in that car??"
"Some girl who saw us kill."
"And why isn't she dead?"
"She's only nineteen man..."
"Jesus fuck Leon . What's her name?"
"Nara Voss she told us."
"Voss?"
"Yeah Voss. What about it?"
"Voss is the name of the obsidian we are meeting in a few minutes."
Sebastian’s PoVI didn’t sleep. Not even for a second. The image of that curtain moving replayed over and over inside my head.Someone had been there.Watching….Waiting…..Praying.“Daphne…”The name left my lips like a promise.Lucas stepped out of the surveillance van just before sunrise, carrying two cups of coffee.“You’ve been staring at that house for six hours.”“I know.”“You should rest.”“I’ll rest after I get my wife back.”He sighed.“I figured you’d say that.”I accepted the coffee but never drank it.Every minute that passed felt stolen.Tomorrow…Whoever was inside that mansion had whispered the same word through that tiny movement of the curtain.Tomorrow.Something was happening tomorrow. And whatever it was…We were already running out of time.Lucas spread a map across the hood of the SUV.“I drove around the property before dawn.”I finally looked away from the mansion.“What did you find?”“Eight guards.”“Only eight?”“Visible guards.”I nodded.“There’ll be more.”
Daphne's PoVThe first morning after we chose each other felt...Different.Not because the apartment had changed. Not because the city outside our windows suddenly looked brighter. But because my heart was quiet. For months, my mind had been a battlefield.Questions….Doubts."What if?""What if there's someone else? What if I'm missing something?"Now...Nothing.Just peace.I woke slowly to the scent of coffee drifting through the apartment. The other side of the bed was empty.I smiled before I even opened my eyes.Liam.I wrapped one of his oversized hoodies around myself and padded barefoot toward the kitchen. There he was.Standing in gray sweatpants and a black T-shirt, his hair sticking up in every direction as he flipped pancakes with far too much concentration.I leaned against the doorway."You know you're making breakfast like it's brain surgery."Without turning around, he smiled."These pancakes deserve respect.""They're pancakes.""They're our pancakes."I laughed."I stand c
Daphne’s PoVThe apartment was quiet. Not the uncomfortable kind of quiet that begged to be filled, but the peaceful silence that only existed when two people didn’t need words to understand each other.Liam still had his arms around me.His heartbeat was slow against my chest, steady enough that I found myself matching my breathing to it.Neither of us moved.Neither of us wanted to.Eventually, he pulled back just enough to look at me.“You hungry?”I laughed.“That’s your first question?”He shrugged, a small smile appearing.“I always think better after food.”“I’ve noticed.”“And you haven’t eaten.”“How do you know that?”“You get quieter when you’re hungry.”I blinked.“Seriously?”“You also rub your left wrist when you’re tired.”Without thinking, I looked down.My fingers were rubbing my wrist. He chuckled.“Told you.”“I don’t know whether that’s sweet or creepy.”“I’m hoping sweet.”“It depends.”“On what?”“Whether you’re secretly keeping a notebook about me.”His eyes widen
The ride back to the apartment was unusually quiet.Nat kept the music low, tapping his fingers against the steering wheel as the city lights blurred past the windows."You've been smiling for the last ten minutes," he finally said."I have not.""You definitely have."I rolled my eyes, trying and failing to hide the grin tugging at my lips."It was... different.""Good different?"I stared out the window."I don't know."Nat laughed softly."That's the most confusing answer I've ever heard.""Because it is confusing."He nodded as if he understood."I think you're comparing two completely different people."Maybe he was right.Javier had been confident, experienced, effortless. There had never been a moment where he hesitated.Liam...Liam overthought everything. He could spend an hour deciding where we should eat dinner and another apologizing if he thought he'd upset me. He remembered tiny details I had forgotten telling him. He always noticed when I was tired before I admitted it.
"What was so special about me?" I ask, leaning back against the table as I wait for his answer. He pauses for a moment, pulling on his clothes before letting out a quiet sigh."I don't really know," he admits. "You're mature for your age, but there's still something youthful about you. You're smart. You're not fragile. And you're not scared."I raise an eyebrow."I get scared.""Sometimes," he says with a small smile. "But when it matters, you don't run. You get nervous, sure, but you're always prepared."A smile tugs at my lips, though he doesn't notice. He's too busy reaching for his turtleneck."I see why Liam likes you so much."The mention of Liam makes guilt twist in my stomach."Sorry about that again..."He waves the apology away."Don't be. It was interesting."I laugh softly and begin fixing my dress."So you'd maybe want to do this another time?"His footsteps move closer."Sure."I feel him gently zip up my dress."I won't be in New York as often," he continues, "but whene
I heard the door open, but I'm a bit taken back by who enters. Liam closes it behind him and comes over to me."Hey love." He grins."Hi...""Are you ok? I saw you absolutely owning my father." He jokes."Yeah I'm all good."He walks over and holds onto my hands in my lap."So, how does it feel to be fucking the Boss of the Italian mob?"I smile and look up at him. He has that look in his eyes. Surely enough, he kisses me intensely.I guess he doesn't know that Javier will be here any second. I try to pull away, but of course he doesn't let me. The door opens before I can warn him. At least that gets him to stop and turn around."Oh..." Liam mumbles."How long has this been going on?" Javier asks."A long time..." I admit."And when I was at your place?""I fucked her in that boxing ring the second you left." Liam says proudly. I wish he didn't put it like that, but strangely enough, I just want him more."So he knew?" He asks me.I stood up and walk closer to him."I'm sorry if you a
You aren't the fucking puppet master of the Mafia. You may be damn close, but you failed to attach one string."This is not the conversation I had pictured.Liam is showing no remorse. It's like he had this speech planned.Mr. Luca sighs. "And who would that be?"He asks through his teeth."Me. You
Liam and I are having a meeting with the other allies today at Javier's offices here in the city. It feels so strange to be considered the same level as all of the men I'm meeting with. I haven't worked for any of this shit, yet it still gets harder each day. These men have been involved with this
"He said he could easily change it to our money?""Sure it's easy for him, but such a big offer is usually reciprocated. Obviously you don't have something as important to give, so I'll settle for less.""What is less in your opinion?"He looks away from me for a second to think. I despise how impr
I can't believe I pulled that damn trigger. It was relieving a couple hours ago, but now the stress is suffocating me.I'm in the shower right now trying to think this through. I came up here as soon as we got back.I had to wash the blood off my hands, literally and figuratively. This shower is to
