“Marissa!” someone calls after me, and I turn around because I got used to the name. The girl winces. “Sorry, Lavender. The boss wants to talk to you.”

I came back this morning and ran into Daniel outside the store. Immediately, he asked me where I’ve been and why I haven’t been at the club, seeming almost desperate for me to go back and promising me a nice bonus if I do.

So I thought why not? And here I am, having my last dance. Literally.

“I’ll go to the office.”

The night is coming to an end

My eyes budge. “Your parents?” Having grown up in a community where there were no parents, the idea of meeting his makes me incredibly nervous. I have no idea how to act, how to speak. “Oh, God, you’ll need to give me a few lectures on how to behave around them before we get to that stage.”He smiles. “There’s no time, they’ll be here in a few minutes. But don’t worry, you’ll be great. Just don’t panic.” He kisses my temple.“They’ll be here in a few moments?”I feel sick to my stomach. I can imagine myself as a mother, with a successful and handsome son, who’s dating someone who was in jail. If they ever find out that I used to dance, I’ll just about die.“Yes, my mum has been bugging me to introduce you for months.”“You never mentioned her.”“I was too busy trying to get in your pants and confused by you telling me that you don’t like me like that.” He pokes my cheek. “You liar. You actually had me for a second.” “I’m not ready to meet her.” I almost hyperventilate. “She’s gonna h

“Bite me.”“Let me guess. This didn’t happen overnight.” He motions with his finger between us and I shrug. “You’ll never know.” I wink. I’m lying. He’s gonna know every detail, and he knows it.James slowly looks at us, his expression unreadable. The tables have turned on him. If I was angry for him being with Eli, now he gets to know how I felt. He purses his lips and sighs, but doesn’t say anything. I guess that’s better than him freaking out.“Come.” Atlas motions and a fuzzy feeling spreads in my stomach when he smiles down at me. He’s wearing his contacts, and however much I prefer his mismatched eyes, I guess I also like the fact that I’m one of the few people who gets to see them. Atlas, in his jogging pants and with his natural eye colours, just for me to cuddle with, is all I could ever have asked for. A literal dream come true.I hold onto his arm as we walk into the reception, paying attention to both the scenery and every woman who lays her eyes on him. “Stop it.” He whis

“What happened with Kristen?” I ask as we lay in bed, tired. We’re laying on our sides, facing each other, and he’s gently running his hand up and down my bare torso while I ruffle his hair.He smirks. “How do you know that something happened?”“Because I told you to come find me when you two were done and I know you’re not dumb enough to still be with her.” It’s plain truth. He knows me well enough to know that I’d freak and possibly beat up him as well as Kristen if they’re still together. He laughs. “You’re right. I, uh, I actually broke things off with her the day you left. She held on to our engagement for a few days, but gave up quickly. I think she knew I had a thing for you. I wanted to go find you immediately after that, but I had no idea where you were. The moment Eli said you’re back here, I searched everywhere. Your apartment, the shops, hostels, everything, until I had an idea to go look in the club.” His face grows a bit serious.“I sat in the corner for almost the whol

He drives off the parking space so fast I think we might fly out into the air, and speeds towards his house. I giggle and inch it up even more.“You’ll be the death of me, Lavender.” He rasps.“Good.” I say and place my palm over his budge, making him hiss and speed up. “You’re gonna get a ticket.”“If I do, you’ll pay for it because it’ll be your fault.”I squeeze gently as a warning not to play with me and a smirk grows on his face. “Savage woman.”As soon as he parks the car, he lifts me onto his lap and reconnects our lips, making me moan into his mouth. Somehow, he manages to stand up and exit the car with me in his arms and then he carries me to the door. “You know. This would be easier if you put me down.”“I haven’t held you in months. I’m not putting you down for the rest of the week, Lavender.”I never liked my name, but good God, when he says it, it’s the most beautiful word that ever existed. I laugh, because if I don’t, I’ll cry. I didn’t realize how much I’ve missed him

I make my way up to the familiar doors and push on them, revealing Daniel, who smiles when he sees me.“Marissa. Sorry, Lavender. How are you? Night going well? Just kidding, I know it is.” He winks and I grin.“I made a couple of bucks, yes. What’s up?”He clears his throat and leans back into his chair. “I was just wondering if there might be any way to persuade you not to stop dancing. Maybe if I give you a

She laughs and stands up. “I can’t believe Eli got married before you. You want me to make you another cup of tea?”“No, it’s fine. I’ll better get going.” I stand up, too, then look around. “You said the money is tight, huh?”She shrugs. “We get by.”“I, uh, stumbled across some money. I could help out.” It makes sense. Everyone eventually gives back to their family. I never did, because I didn’t have any family (or money), but in a way, I guess this is mine. “Get the kids some toys or something.”“You don’t need to.” She declines. “But if it wouldn’t hurt you, the kids would always be happy to get some new toys.”“Of course.” I remember how much I wanted one just for myself when I was little.Margaret accompanies me to the door and in the park, I see some kids playing in the ground and I smile. I have a chance to be the person I needed when I was small.Maybe I don’t want to be a chef. Maybe I could be… Something bigger.“I’ll get to you in a few days.” I promise and she nods, happy
