Chapter 4

The Handsome Guy
As soon as I walked in, a pale-faced Kimberly immediately pulled me into a corner.

"Something has gone terribly wrong! The case files for Electro Group were somehow leaked. They are one of our firm's key major clients, and the big boss was so furious he nearly smashed up his own office.

"Be careful. Neil might be looking for you precisely because of this."

I nodded and headed straight to the HR department.

When Neil saw me, he shook his head with a troubled expression. "Ramon, the company's senior management suspects that you were the one who leaked Electro Group's case files, because the people who received them that day were Chelsea, Owen, and you."

I felt as if my heart had been struck by a hammer.

"It wasn't me. If you don't believe me, you can pull up the surveillance footage from the conference room. I was only responsible for handing out the basic documents that day.

"I was sitting at the very corner of the conference table—I couldn't even hear what they were talking about in the meeting, so how could I have leaked anything?"

As I spoke, I looked at Neil and said, "You know I am already on my way out, so why would I sabotage myself like this right before I leave?"

Neil sighed and said, "Ramon, I know the kind of person you are. But this time, it's a report made under a real name."

"Who?" I couldn't stay seated any longer and shot up in agitation.

"It's your best friend, Owen," Neil replied, pity in his eyes.

I nearly crushed my own fists. I couldn't speak. All I felt was a suffocating tightness in my chest.

"But I didn't do it. Chelsea was there too at the time. She can testify for me."

The words had barely left my lips when Neil shook his head firmly. "Ramon, the second person who reported you was your girlfriend, Chelsea."

I couldn't hear anything he said after that. All that filled my mind was that one sentence.

"The second person who reported you was Chelsea."

I stumbled back to my seat in a daze. The stares around me fell like cold blades, heavy and sharp, hacking into me.

"Ramon always seemed so simple and honest. I never pegged him for a parasite. If he didn't do it, why would both Owen and Chelsea report him?"

"He probably knew he could never catch up to those two in a million years, so he took a desperate gamble and sold the documents for a good price."

I offered no defense. Instead, I pushed open the door to Chelsea's office. She sat there with her back to the light, her expression unreadable.

A familiar voice fell upon my ears. "Ramon, just take the blame for now. I'll explain everything to you later."

I walked over to her. Then, holding back tears, I looked her straight in the eye.

"So, it really was you who reported me? I clearly didn't do it, so why would you report me?"

Chelsea stood up, walked around the desk, and took hold of my arm. Her eyes held a flicker of reluctance, yet what she said cut like a blade meant to kill.

"I know it wasn't you. But if you don't confess, the blame will fall on Owen."

Those words struck me like a thunderbolt to the head. I stood frozen in place, unable to even react.

"You're just an assistant. So, even if you take the blame, at worst you start over from scratch or switch careers. But Owen can't do that. He's proud and ambitious. If he gets saddled with a reputation for leaking case files, his entire career will be ruined."

The more she spoke, the harder my tears fell. They fell until Chelsea's face blurred into a smudge before my eyes, leaving only her mouth, opening and closing.

"Ramon, you have me to back you up, while Owen has no one else besides you. As his best friend, I'm sure you'll be willing to help him, right?"

She wiped away my tears with one hand while cupping my face with the other, pressing me for an answer.

The warmth of her palm seeped through my skin, yet it chilled me straight to the bone.

I stared at the two reflections of myself in her eyes and asked emphatically, "And what if I refuse?"

Chelsea's eyes reddened as she shook her head. "It's no use. Owen had someone fabricate a video of you leaking the case files."

The sword that had been hanging over my head came crashing down. She knew everything, and yet she chose to condone it and even went along with it.

I closed my eyes, then nodded gently.

At that moment, Owen—who had heard everything—rushed in from the doorway and wrapped his arm tightly around my shoulders.

"Ramon, please forgive me. I had my reasons."

I shoved him away with all my strength. My gaze shifted from him back to Chelsea.

"Don't touch me. You two make me sick now."

The moment I stepped out of the firm, a moving truck pulled away from The Wingham. It carried everything that had marked my existence in Richton over the years.

And now, they were going to disappear along with me.

Chelsea stood beneath the streetlamp, arms slacks at her sides, her shoulders drawn tighter than they normally were. Behind her stretched the street lit up by bursts of fireworks.I closed up the bakery and stood in front of her, a polite smile still lingering on my face. She lowered her head, her frozen face struggling to force out a smile."Ramon, I messed up. I had the best of you, and I lost it. I know you won't ever forgive me, and I'll never forgive myself either. But I just wanted to see you again."The wind swept up from the alley, sending the snowflakes tumbling and swirling.I glanced at the snow that had gathered on her shoulders, then turned away and rubbed my eyes."You've seen me, and you've said what you came to say. Chelsea, it's time for you to go. My mom set me up with someone. She's a college professor, and she's genuinely kind. She never makes me feel dumb."She doesn't switch up our plans at the last minute, and she sure as hell doesn't call me stupid. Most

Chelsea lifted her head and looked at me. "I saw the bathrobe photo Owen posted. And I also found the records of the documents he used to frame you in the past."I nodded. "Then go, and don't come back."The wind chime at the door gave a soft tinkle. The wind gusted through the doorway, lifting wisps of her hair. But she paid it no mind and simply stood outside, watching me.But I never once looked up.By the time winter set in, I had truly made a name for my bakery. Every batch of bread I baked each day was gone in no time.I had never imagined that the food I loved to eat could one day support me. But at last, I realized that doing what I loved brought me far more joy and fulfillment than devoting myself to what someone else was passionate about. When the first snow fell, Chelsea came again. Wrapped around her neck was the red scarf I had given her the year before. She walked over from across the street in a white coat, stopping about two yards in front of me. Thick snowflake

I was crouching under the locust tree, eating a bagel, when I saw Chelsea.I was in my pajamas and flip-flops. She was in a tailored dress, looking utterly travel-worn.Chelsea stood there, lips pressed into a thin line. Head lowered, she stared at me with a wounded, aggrieved look."Aren't you going to buy me breakfast?" she asked."Let me make myself a little clearer. Chelsea, we broke up. You shouldn't be showing up in front of me anymore," I said. Her mouth twitched. "You're right. But I didn't agree to it, nor am I willing to break up."I didn't respond."It's only now that I've realized I can't live without you. I've grown used to your smell, to seeing the round top of your head bobbing around the firm, and to the coffee you make for me. When other people make it, it's either too bitter or too sweet. I could never get used to theirs."She stared at me intently, as if trying to confirm something."It was always you I loved. Not Owen, and it never would've been him."I gl

The day after I left, everyone noticed the change in Chelsea. Her smile had lost its warmth, and she even stopped talking shop with Owen, cutting him off cold.Aside from the necessary court appearances and client meetings, Chelsea had practically locked herself away in her office. No one knew what she was doing in there. Not even Owen, and that gnawed at him unbearably. He had thought that after all the effort he'd put into driving me out of the firm and out of Richton, Chelsea would be his for the taking. There was no way he would allow things to go wrong at the very last moment. Thus, he knocked on the door to Chelsea's office."Come in."After that curt, clipped response, Owen decided to get straight to the point. "Chelsea, what's going on with you?"When she saw it was him, Chelsea furrowed her brows."I'm fine. If you have something to say, just come out with it."Owen's face went pale, and his eyes reddened in an instant. "Are you still blaming me for what happened?"Ch

That afternoon after I left, Chelsea was sitting in her office when a sudden wave of panic rose up inside her chest. She kept telling herself that she had done nothing wrong. After all, Owen was a rising star in the legal world, while I was just an assistant who handled basic paperwork. She should know which one carried more weight. She told herself this over and over again. But no matter what she said or how she tried to convince herself, that suffocating sense of unease simply wouldn't go away. For the first time ever, Chelsea left work early. On her way out of the firm, she even politely declined Owen's invitation to go over a case together. She made her way down to the underground parking garage and slipped into her car. As she started the engine, an inadvertent glance made her freeze in place. The passenger seat was covered in traces of Owen—a blue cushion, gray slippers, and his mouth spray tucked into the side compartment. Even hanging from the rearview mirror was Owen's zo
